3 THE PASTOR S LETTER AUGUST 2011 ΑΤΓΟΤΣΟ 2011 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, For everything there is a season, and a time For every matter under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 A small girl once asked me, Where does God go for Summer vacation? At first I thought the question was cute, but I soon realized that the girl was serious. It made me think for a moment how to answer the question. Obviously God does not go on Summer vacation, we do. That was the answer I gave the small girl. She seemed to understand but still looked confused. She then told me that her parents needed to hear this answer and then maybe they would continue to bring her to Church during the Summer so she could be with God. Summer time is time in which we think about taking it easy. We feel we can stay away from certain things, especially Church on Sunday mornings. Summer time is as good of a time to worship God as any, because God Himself has given Summer to us. We continue to need His blessings and guidance, no matter what season or day. August is filled with important Holy days for our spiritual like. I hope you will not forget them and continue to worship in our Church as often as possible. During August we celebrate the Great Feast of the Falling Asleep of the Theotokos, the Koimisis. From August 1 st until the 14 th we are called upon to pray more, read Holy Scripture and other religious books more in order to grow our spiritual lives, partake of Holy Communion and participate in Holy Confession, give of ourselves to the Church when called upon and fast from certain foods. Let us all take the time to attend the special services during this period and allow our spiritual life to be strengthened. Please attend the Paraklesis services as they are scheduled. If you are traveling away from the Wilmington area this summer, please have a blessed and safe trip. If you are staying near the Wilmington are enjoy your summer months. Wherever you will be, continue to pray and don t forget to worship within the Church. Summer truly is a time to receive our Lord s blessings and feel His presence in our lives. Remember, we can t live without His Blessings. Have a great Summer! In Christ s Service, Rev. 7 ONE DIVINE LITURGY BOOK Our entire Parish family would like to thank our Altar Guild Organization and Heart Club for their generous donation of the purchase of Divine Liturgy Books. We will now be using only one Divine Liturgy Book and we now have enough books for all the pews. Please note that added to the Divine Liturgy Books are the words Congregation Stands and Congregation Sits so that everyone will now know when to stand and sit throughout the Liturgy. Our entire Parish family would also like to thank Dimitra Lempesis and Steve Nicholas for putting the words into every Divine Liturgy Book. Please take the opportunity to use the Divine Liturgy Book during the Liturgy so you may better understand the Divine Liturgy and follow the Divine Liturgy. NEW HOLY COMMUNION PROCEDURE Our Church does everything for the benefit of Her members. Everything is always done in proper order and with respect. We here at Holy Trinity also are called upon to do everything in proper order and with respect. Therefore, effective July 10th a new Holy Communion Procedure was installed within our Parish. All members are asked to first and foremost listen to the instructions of the Ushers. Those who are prepared to participate in Holy Communion are asked to exit their pews towards the side aisle and then come forward from the side aisle onto the Solea and then partake of Holy Communion. Once you have received your Antidoron (Blessed Bread) you are asked to proceed down the center aisle to your seat in the pews. Please remember to follow the directions of the Ushers at all times. If we all follow this simple procedure, our Church order will truly benefit all. HOSPITAL VISITATIONS Not only is the spiritual health of our members important but also their physical health. When a member enters into the Hospital it is important that Fr. Dean is notified. If a member himself/herself is entering the Hospital (at least overnight), he/she should contact Fr. Dean beforehand if they know the day they will be entering. If a family member is entering the Hospital (at least overnight), another family member should contact Fr. Dean before hand if they know the day they will be entering. Obviously, in the case of an emergency, Fr. Dean should be notified immediately. Hospitals today no longer notify the Church when a Church member enters the hospital. So, if someone is in the hospital and Fr. Dean is NOT notified, don t blame him for not coming to see that member. Remember Fr. Dean s ESP has been down for years!! YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED The Basil Garden has been planted in front of the office. Special thanks to Steve Nicholas and the children who attended Vacation Bible School for planting it! The Church office has been painted and new carpet has been installed. The Agape Room has also been painted. Special thanks to Loula Kapordelis for her generous donation. The Wooden Stand that encases the Holy Relics. Special thanks to the Gus Tsionas Family for their generous donation. A Convection Oven for use during our festivals was generously donated by John & Eleni Alexopoulos. A set of 200 China Tableware Settings was generously donated from the Hollywood Grill, special thanks to owner Tom Hatzis. Honorary Mention goes to our Ladies Philoptochos Society for their more than generous donation of $10,000 towards the cost of the Icon Restoration Project, along with major donations from our own GOYA, the Hellenic University Club, and Milt & Carol Misogianes, the project will soon be started as we are presently soliciting bids for the task. YOU CAN HELP TOO There are many jobs around the church buildings that need to be done. If you have the time, the talent, or the treasure that could benefit our Church building ~ please let us know by calling the church office to volunteer!! Thank you in advance for your generosity!!

8 End of Year Picnic Special thanks to George & Amelea Rassias for their help and hard work in organizing the Picnic for us.

9 F. for Y. your I. information Q. Who is the Church? A. That s right, Who is the Church? When we speak about the Church, most of us are talking about the building we attend every Sunday. Many of us even call our Church building our Parish. The true word we should use to describe the building we go to on Sunday morning is the Church building. To understand the word Church we must first know that Christ came into the world to reconcile humanity with God by taking on human nature. The Church is a new life in Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit. The Church is men and women who have put on Christ by being baptized into Him, sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in Chrismation, forgiven of their sins in Confession and nurtured by the Heavenly Food through His Body and Blood in Communion. The Church is in the world, yet not of the world. The Church is not an institution or society. We are called out to lead a life above and beyond this world while we remain in it. The Church is a divinely instituted unity of people, united by the Orthodox Faith, the law of God, the hierarchy, and the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments). It is the means whereby we human beings have a participation in the life of love and fellowship of the Holy Trinity. The Greek word EKKLESIA means those who have been called out. The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ. The Church is visible in the world and comprises all those who have been united to it by the grace of the Holy Spirit through the Holy Sacraments. This part of the Church is called the Church Militant, those men and women who are still struggling on earth and fighting against evil. The Church is also invisible, since those who have fallen asleep in the Lord and are in the Lord s Kingdom, make up what is called the Church Triumphant. So as you can see, the answer to this simple question is simple - the Church is every man and woman united in Christ through the Orthodox Faith continuing on their individual salvation path being sanctified by the Sacraments. The Church therefore is not a building but made up as the Body of Christ, those living and those who have fallen asleep. Christ is the Head of the Church and we all make up His Body. The Church is truly WHO not what. As we read in 1 Corinthians 12:27, Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. Let us all continue to do His Will, His Way, and by His Words for the benefit of all who make up our Church. HAVE YOU BEEN TO HAIWAII?? If you have If not...revisit!!...take a trip with us!! at the Heart s Welcome Back Gathering Thursday, September 1pm We meet in the AHEPA ROOM Join us for some rest & relaxation with refreshments!! And a little Fun and Fellowship mixed in!! All attending will receive a chart of Foods that are good for Senior Citizens and what they do for you.. See you in September! NEW EVENT SCHEDULING POLICY Dear Brothers and Sisters, In order to better meet the needs of all members, affective August 1, 2011 any individual member or group of members who would like use any room, the gymnasium, the AHEPA room or the Church grounds for an event (other than a regularly scheduled meeting) must first obtain written permission from the Parish Council. Any individual member or group of members must submit in writing to the Parish Council at least one month in advance of the event, the date, place, time and what kind of event that he/she (they) want to hold. The Parish Council will respond as soon as possible to the request. If no response (for any reason) is not obtained, then the event may not take place.

10 Special August Services Paraklesis Service : Wednesday, August 3rd 7PM Paraklesis Service - Friday, August 5th 7PM Divine Liturgy for Transfiguration Saturday, August 6th 9AM Paraklesis Service Wednesday, August 10th 7PM Paraklesis Service Friday, August 12th 7PM Divine Liturgy for the Monday, August 15th 9AM Falling Asleep of Theotokos Dormition of the Theotokos Celebrated August 15 The dominions and the thrones, the rulers, the principalities and the powers, the cherubim and the fearful seraphim glorify thy Dominion (Vespers Sticheron, Tone 1). The sacred Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos marks her repose, which was followed by the translation of her sacred body three days later into heaven. This feast, therefore, marks her sole being commended into her Son s hands and the short sojourn of her body in the tomb. Unlike the Resurrection of Christ, the mysterious character of her death, burial, resurrection and ascension were not the subject of apostolic teachings, yet they were recorded by the tradition of the Holy Orthodox Church and writings of the Church Fathers. The Dormition of the Theotokos took place while Apostle Thomas was preaching the gospel in India. The other Apostles had been caught up from various lands on the clouds of heaven, and were transported to Gethsemane, to the brier of the all-blessed Virgin. This was permitted by the will of God, so the faithful might be assured that the Mother of God was bodily assumed into heaven. For just as they were more greatly assured of the Resurrection of Christ, through the disbelief of Thomas, so did they learn of the bodily assumption of the all-pure Virgin Mary through the delay of Thomas. On the third day after the burial St. Thomas was suddenly caught up in a cloud in India and transported to a place in the air above the tomb of the Virgin. From that vantage point, he beheld the translation of her body into the heavens, and cried out to her, Whither goest thou, O all-holy one? She removed her girdle and gave it to him saying, Receive this, my friend. And then she was gone. He then descended to find the other disciples keeping watch over the sepulcher of the Theotokos. He sat down beside them, with the girdle in his hand, greatly saddened that he had not been there when she reposed, as had been the other Apostles. Hence he said, We are all disciples of the Master; we all preach the same thing; we are all servants of the one Lord, Jesus Christ. How, then, is it that ye were counted worthy to behold the repose of His Mother, and I was not? Am I not an Apostle? Can it be that God is not pleased with my preaching? I beseech you, my fellow disciples: open the tomb, that I also may look upon her remains, and embrace them, and bid her farewell! The Apostles took pity on St. Thomas and opened the tomb. All were aghast when the found it empty, not realizing that moments before she had been bodily transported to paradise to be the mediatress of Christians. All that remained were her burial clothes, which emitted a wonderful unearthly fragrance. The Feast s kontakion speaks of her as an unfailing hope and mediation, reminding us of her intercessory role in paradise. Neither the tomb of death had power over the Theotokos, who is ever watchful in her prayers and in whose intercessions lies unfailing hope. For as the Mother of Life she had been translated unto life by Him Who dwelt in her ever-virgin womb.

20 STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM 2011 THREE TRUTHS To gain a complete understanding of Stewardship we must first look at the book of Genesis. These three truths are revealed: 1. God created man from the dust of the earth and breathed life into him 2. God created woman from the rib of man 3. God created the world we live in; the air, the seas, the sky and all living things Thus we realize that God is the source of all life. The first aspect of Stewardship then, is the realization that our lives belong to God. My life and your life are not really our own; they belong to God. Once this realization is made we must act. We must give back to God what is really His our lives. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament, the offering of different animals in the Temple, is in fact giving back to God. Man acknowledges God as Creator and then returns to Him in gratitude and love what is His in the first place. We see the same giving back attitude reflected in the Devine Liturgy. As the Priest raises the Host he says the following words: We offer to you these gifts from Your own gifts in all and for all. We offer to God the Eucharistic Gifts realizing that they are not ours but His. We are giving back to God. However, the most important giving back is an individual and personal one. We must give OURSELVES back to God. This is done in gratitude as we acknowledge Him as the source of our lives. This same principle is alluded to in each Divine Liturgy as we pray to commit OURSELVES, one another, and our whole life to Christ our God. Stewardship is a transfer of ownership. Just as we have seen a restaurant come under new management, we too, must bring our lives under new management, the management of God. New management means a new way of doing things God s way. New management means a transformation must take place--god s transformation. New Management means a new attitude--god s attitude. Let s be more specific now and see what areas of our lives should be GIVEN BACK and come under NEW MANAGEMENT. 1. TIME - The reality of time began with God at the point of creation. Thus, we can say that time comes from God and belongs to God. We might then ask ourselves, How much TIME should we give to God? The answer is very simple. All time belongs to God. We must always see ourselves as God s representatives. This includes all of life s activities, whether we are shopping, playing, working, driving or walking. Our Orthodox Christian life must be more than a weekly Divine Liturgy or an occasional meeting. We must strive to cultivate a Christ-consciousness that permeates our entire life. Our TIME must be given back to God and come under new management. 2. TALENTS - Each of us has been endowed with natural abilities. These abilities can be physical, social, or intellectual. Besides these natural abilities, we have also been endowed with spiritual gifts which we receive from the Holy Spirit at our Baptism. All of our natural abilities and spiritual gifts must be given back to God and brought under new management. 3. TREASURES - Again we must realize that all comes from God. Whatever our occupation is, it involves interaction with resources that God has provided. The health that we have, which allows us to work, comes from God. We might then ask ourselves another question, How much of our finances should we give to God? This question was addressed by our Lord with the rich young ruler. Jesus told him, Sell all that you have and give it to the poor. The message here is that the Orthodox Christian should be possessionless. Yes, we must, and we do have many things, but we must realize that we are only guardians of these possessions. Our finances must be given back to God and come under new management. Bringing our finances under new management includes the privilege of giving to our Parish. With our giving, we support our Parish in order to meet the needs of every member. Let us remember these things: 1. Life comes from God and should be given back to God. 2. Our TIME, TALENTS, and TREASURES must come under new management - God s management. As we give ourselves to God, the result will be similar to what happens in the Holy Eucharist. We offer bread and wine and the Lord consecrates and blesses these gifts. The same will happen in our lives. As we offer ourselves, the Lord will bless and consecrate our lives. If you have not sent your financial pledge Card in to the Church office by now, please do so as soon as possible. If you need a new financial pledge card, please call the Church Office so one can be sent to you. We ask that you give from your heart. We ask that you give the best you can give to your Parish. We ask that you offer what is right and proper to your Parish. We ask that you give now before it becomes too late. Remember, this Parish will always cost money because Christ is alive within it. We thank all the members who have offered their financial pledge to our Parish. We pray the Lord will continue to bless you with all good things and may our Parish grow in the spirit of faith, love and hope always. Sincerely, Your Holy Trinity Stewardship Committee

Αο ρακνγειάζνπκε ζαλ Έιιελεο όπσο θάλακε πάληα! Nothing has changed for millions of years. The sun keeps on rising every day at the same time. It has been always hot in July in the north hemisphere. The splendor of the nature in the summer is so remarkable and all around us. However, while all the animals live by the rules the creator has set for them, the humans have always been trying to make their life more comfortable by using technology. The air conditioning has made our individual space cooler at the cost of lesser contact with our human fellow and the absence of the sweet aroma of the flowers. We cannot have everything. We win some, we lose some. Something is not the same this summer as it used to be. The joy of visiting Greece is not the same as before. No matter what, the bad daily news about the economy in Greece, and our concern for the future of our relatives and friends are always in our thoughts. However, there is also concern for the economy of the empire we live. None can predict with certainty the future. Specialists and media focus usually on the bad news and their predictions are not always correct, thanks God! I have no answer for the above mentioned thoughts. However, I am sure for one thing, material goods by themselves only are not sufficient for the human happiness. We also need spiritual wealth and faith to ideas and ideals. Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4). As Hellenes and Greek Americans we can rely on two pillars, Hellenism and Orthodoxy. People, nations and groups finished only when they lost their faith in their ideals, virtues and history. Despite their weaknesses and issues, our communities are still the place where our selves still exist. They are the place where exist our agora, church, café, customs and our ancient language, a place where we exchange views for what is happening in the world, as we have been doing from ancient times until today. I think that a good antidote to those midsummer thoughts could be a good book, a walk in the park, dip in the sea, a cup of coffee with friends and the faith that both, the country we were born and the country we live and/or born will manage to overcome their problems and smile as Greeks always used to do! GOYA NEWS Summer 2011 I would like to start off by thanking all of the GOYANs who volunteered during the Festival. Many GOYANs worked longer than their scheduled time slot and worked not only in the soda booth, but wherever they were needed. All of your efforts were much appreciated. Thank you also to Pauline Raisis for coordinating the shifts for the soda booth. The week after the festival, eleven GOYANs helped with the Vacation Bible School. Thank you to all volunteers for your help working with the younger members of the church. I would like to invite all students in grades 7-12 to participate in GOYA next year. If you are interested and are NOT currently on the GOYA list, please goya@holytrinitywilmington.org with your name, grade and address. Respectfully submitted, Peter Stevens
