EPISTLE The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews. 9:1-7 Brethren, the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lamp stand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people. 5
The Gospel of Matthew 19:16-26 GOSPEL At that time, a young man came up to Jesus, kneeling and saying, "Good Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?" And he said to him, "Why do you call me good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother, and You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 6
Ecclesiastical New Year - September 1 For the maintenance of their armed forces, the Roman emperors decreed that their subjects in every district should be taxed every year. This same decree was reissued every fifteen years, since the Roman soldiers were obliged to serve for fifteen years. At the end of each fifteen-year period, an assessment was made of what economic changes had taken place, and a new tax was decreed, which was to be paid over the span of the fifteen years. This imperial decree, which was issued before the season of winter, was named Indictio, that is, Definiton, or Order. This name was adopted by the emperors in Constantinople also. At other times, the latter also used the term Epinemisis, that is, Distribution (Dianome). It is commonly held that Saint Constantine the Great introduced the Indiction decrees in A.D. 312, after he beheld the sign of the Cross in heaven and vanquished Maxentius and was proclaimed Emperor in the West. Some, however (and this seems more likely), ascribe the institution of the Indiction to Augustus Caesar, three years before the birth of Christ. Those who hold this view offer as proof the papal bull issued in A.D. 781 which is dated thus: Anno IV, Indictionis LIII -that is, the fourth year of the fifty-third Indiction. From 8
SAINTS AND FEASTS this, we can deduce the aforementioned year (3 B.C.) by multiplying the fifty-two complete Indictions by the number of years in each (15), and adding the three years of the fifty-third Indiction. There are three types of Indictions: 1) That which was introduced in the West, and which is called Imperial, or Caesarean, or Constantinian, and which begins on the 24th of September; 2) The so-called Papal Indiction, which begins on the 1st of January; and 3) The Constantinopolitan, which was adopted by the Patriarchs of that city after the fall of the Eastern Empire in This Indiction is indicated in their own hand on the decrees they issue, without the numeration of the fifteen years. This Indiction begins on the 1st of September and is observed with special ceremony in the Church. Since the completion of each year takes place, as it were, with the harvest and gathering of the crops into storehouses, and we begin anew from henceforth the sowing of seed in the earth for the production of future crops, September is considered the beginning of the New Year. The Church also keeps festival this day, beseeching God for fair weather, seasonable rains, and an abundance of the fruits of the earth. The Holy Scriptures (Lev. 23:24-5 and Num. 29:1-2) also testify that the people of Israel celebrated the feast of the Blowing of the Trumpets on this day, offering hymns of thanksgiving. In addition to all the aforesaid, on this feast we also commemorate our Saviour's entry into the synagogue in Nazareth, where He was given the book of the Prophet Esaias to read, and He opened it and found the place where it is written, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, for which cause He hath anointed Me..." (Luke 4:16-30). It should be noted that to the present day, the Church has always celebrated the beginning of the New Year on September 1. This was the custom in Constantinople until its fall in 1453 and in Russia until the reign of Peter I. September 1 is still festively celebrated as the New Year at the Patriarchate of Constantinople; among the Jews also the New Year, although reckoned according to a moveable calendar, usually falls in September. The service of the Menaion for January 1 is for our Lord's Circumcision and for the memorial of Saint Basil the Great, without any mention of its being the beginning of a new year. Apolytikion in the Second Tone Creator of the universe, setting times and seasons by Your sole authority, bless the cycle of the year of Your grace, O Lord, guarding our rulers and Your nation in peace, at the intercession of the Theotokos, and save us. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone You who created all things in Your infinite wisdom, and set the times by Your own authority, grant Your Christian people victories. Blessing our comings and goings throughout this year, guide our works according to Your divine will. 9

NOTHING SMELLS WORSE THAN PRIDE There was a virtuous hermit who frequently prayed to God, and who received revelations of many divine mysteries. One day he set out from his hermitage to travel to a distant region. Along the way, he met another man who was journeying in the same direction. This individual was actually an angel, but the hermit did not realize this and assumed he was a regular human being. As they journeyed together, along the path they encountered a dead horse. The hermit covered his nose and held his breath; the angel did not. A short while later, they came across a dead calf. The hermit again covered his nose and held his breath; the angel did not. Not long after, they found a dead dog in their path. The hermit covered his nose and held his breath; the angel did nothing. Eventually they approached a certain village where they crossed paths with a beautiful young lady, who was wearing extravagant clothing and ornate jewelry, and taking great pride in her appearance. The angel then immediately covered his nose. When the hermit witnessed this, he stopped and asked, Who are you? Are you an angel, a human being, or a demon? We passed by a dead horse that stunk, but you did not cover your nose. We also passed by the dead calf and dog, and I did not see you cover your nose. Now that we passed by such a beautiful young lady you decided to cover your nose and hold your breath? Then the angel made himself visible to the hermit and replied, Nothing smells as bad as pride does to God. Having said this, the angel disappeared. The hermit then returned back to his hut and began weeping for his sins, beseeching God to protect him henceforth from the devil s traps, and not allow him to fall into the sin of pride and thus lose his soul. by St. Kosmas Aitolos 15
A PRAYER FOR CHILDREN AS THEY BEGIN SCHOOL O Lord our God and Creator, who has honored us men and women with Your own image; who has taught Your elect, so that most wise are they who give heed to Your teaching; who reveals wisdom unto babes; who has imparted Your teaching unto Solomon and unto all who have sought Your wisdom: Open the hearts, the minds, and the lips of these Your servants, that they may receive the power of the law, and successfully apprehend the useful precepts which shall be taught them, to the glory of Your All-Holy Name, to the profit and building up of Your Holy Church, and that they may understand Your good and perfect will. Deliver them from every hostile oppression; preserve them in Orthodoxy and the Faith, and in all uprightness and purity all the days of their life, that they may advance in wisdom, and in the fulfilling of Your commandments: that, being thus prepared, they may glorify Your All-Holy Name, and become heirs of Your Kingdom. For You are God mighty in mercy, and gracious in strength; and unto You is due glory, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages, Amen. 16
CATECHISM MINISTRY OUR NEW FORMAT The faith is shared/taught to our children primarily IN THE HOME by the family members. Secondarily, the true classroom to experience and therefore learn our faith outside of the family setting is the church building, (Ο Ιερος Ναος). The format for teaching experientially is the Divine Liturgy, all of the Mysteria and services that are provided us by the fathers of the church. This year all of our youth will attend and participate in the Divine Liturgy sitting together with their family members. The Divine Liturgy, the center of our existence as a parish, is where EVERYONE comes together to be fed from the same Holy Chalice. At the end of the Liturgy, the youth will come forward receive their antidoron and proceed next door to the church hall for a minute lesson. Each year there will be a man theme that will banner what we are teaching our youth. This year s theme is, I (we) believe!..no I (we) really do. All of our youth will learn by rote the Creed and its meaning. This will be the one and only focus of our Catechetical Ministry, teaching our youth what they as Greek Orthodox Christians believe. In preparing for our new Ecclesiastical Year, the following catechists responded to God calling them to assist the spiritual father of the community, helping him share our faith and traditions with our beautiful children. They are not teachers but God fearing Greek Orthodox Christians who practice their faith therefore modeling what it means to be a person living in Christ. They are equipped to transmit the traditions of our faith that have been passed down orally and in written form by the church. CATECHISTS ASSISTANT CATECHISTS Director- Assistant Director - Pre-K/Kindergarten - Grade 1 - Grades 2, 3 - Grades 4, 5 - Grades 6, 7, 8 - Grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Tara Kavadias Voula Vithoulkas Anastasia Kyritsopoulos Stella Marafatsos Prokopic Theodora Kavadias Voula Vithoulkas Demetre Koutras Georgia Ferentinos Alexia Christian Penny O'Donnell Jennifer Georgopoulos Kristina Maria Paspalis Maria Poulakis 17
CATECHISM MINISTRY (CONTINUED) HOPE/JOY, Middle School Ministry (Jr. GOYA) and Sr. High Ministry (Sr. GOYA), all are under the umbrella of our Catechism Ministry. The Church is not the YMCA, a sports organization or secular center for cultural enhancement. The focus of Youth Ministry in our community is not basketball and Greek Dancing, even though we do play basketball as part of our curriculum and we do have an entire Greek Dance Ministry. Youth Ministry in our community is about bringing our youth closer to Christ. "Sunday School" is not the only media used to teach our faith. Remember, our faith is caught not taught. We offer the following to enrich the spiritual journey of our youth: 18
Again, those who are advisors are called by God to care for His children by assisting the spiritual father of the community. Before each meeting, Basketball or Greek Dance practice, the youth are engaged in prayer and a critical reflection on our theme, "I (we) believe...no, I (we) really do!" Each Catechist/Youth Advisor agrees to the following; That he/she is an Orthodox Christian and member in good standing of a canonical Orthodox Church, That he/she is interested in offering their Time and Talent to this specific Diakonia of sharing the message of the Gospel with youth and their families, That he/she has a positive and enthusiastic attitude toward Youth Diakonia, That he/she is dedicated and willing to commit at least 4 hours per week to Catechetical/ Youth Ministry, That he/she must display good communications skills, That he/she fully understands that their religious, moral and social duties are to apply the tenets of the Orthodox faith to their life and activities, to seek personal growth, to attend the Divine Liturgy and other services of worship faithfully on Sundays and holy days, to keep the rules and fasts of the Orthodox tradition, to receive frequently the sacraments of Holy Confession and Holy Communion, to train and teach the young according to the faith and spirit of Orthodoxy, to respect the clergy and guide the youth to a relationship with the spiritual father(s) of the parish, the ecclesiastical authority, and all governing bodies of the Church, to be obedient in matters of faith and ecclesiastical order, and to cooperate in every way towards the welfare and prosperity of the Parish and the success of its sacred mission. 19
