Sounds and songs from the 17th century that continue to enrich our lives will be heard. Attend this unique and rare event to hear the music that the pioneer Orthodox Christians carried with them in their hearts and in their memories when they came here 250 years ago. Born in Thessaloniki, Dr. Kalaitzidis earned a PhD in Byzantine musicology at the University of Athens. He is one of the most distinguished performers and teachers of the oud in the Mediterranean with more than 2,000 concerts in 40 countries. Paul Macres is our very own Holy Trinity congregant and choir member! A Minnesota native, Paul plays bass and cello for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, where he earned a Professional Studies Certificate in music performance. Paul also holds a master s degree from Rice University and a bachelor s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, both in music. He teaches at NOCCA, Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, and YOL9W, a youth orchestra based in the New Orleans Lower 9th Ward. This is a free event with dedicated parking in the West Road Garage!

3 150TH ANNIVERSARY PHOTOS Photos taken during the 150th Anniversary events are being shown on the screen in the Coffee Room after services on Sunday. If you are have any questions on obtaining copies of the photos, please contact Barbara Stavis Wolf at NATIONAL CHURCH MUSIC SUNDAY Today, the community observes National Church Music Ministry Sunday, which falls each year in October on the Sunday closest to the feast day of Saint Romanos the Melodist (October 1). On this day, the women and men, who have heard and responded to the Lord s invitation to be church musicians, are recognized. This includes the choir director, choir members, and chanters. As church musicians, these people represent the laity in the liturgical dialogue of the worship services. In glory to God, the Holy Trinity, they commit themselves to learning the hymns of the Orthodox faith, understanding the sequence of the liturgical worship and actively offering their prayers in song to enhance the beauty of our worship. ORDER OF ST. MARKELLA OF CHIOS DINNER DANCE The annual Order of St. Markella of Chios Dinner Dance is slated for Saturday, October 24, 2015, beginning with cocktails at 6:30 pm and dinner at 7:30 pm. Music will be provided by Muses Greek Band. For additional information, call Maria Anastasiou at or Kosta Frezoulis at Tickets are $60 for adults and $45 for students. OXI DAY PROGRAM PRESENTED BY GREEK SCHOOL STUDENTS The Greek School students are preparing a multidisciplinary performance similar to the program presented on March 25th. It will be performed in the gymnasium after church services on Sunday, October 25, and will include a skit entitled "Greece at War," an historical reenactment entitled "Women from Epiros," and Greek dances. Parents of Greek School students should note the following practice schedule: Sundays, October 4, 11, and 18, 2015 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Friday, October 23, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm These practices will take place on the stage in the gymnasium. All parents are asked to make special efforts to have their children present for all practices. PHILOPTOCHOS SAINT NICHOLAS NAME DAY The Ladies Philoptochos Society has supported the building of the Saint Nicholas National Shrine through chapter donations, as well as through member donations. Soon, Philoptochos will invite the Cathedral Family to join them in observing St. Nicholas s Name Day on December 6 and to celebrate and honor the historic event, which represents the St. Nicholas National Shrine. Message from Father George NEXT SUNDAY IS GODPARENT SUNDAY On Sunday, October 4, 2015, the parish will honor those who have taken on the role of godparent and encourage everyone to participate in this special service! For the Orthodox Christian, serving as a godparent is both an honor and a responsibility that lasts a lifetime. Together with the parents, the godparent should help raise the newly baptized in the Orthodox Christian Faith. This is why, first of all, the godparent in an Orthodox Christian baptism must be an Orthodox Christian. According to the teaching of the Church, only one godparent is necessary, even though a common practice is to have two godparents. We want to encourage everyone, especially our Sunday Church School students, to contact their godparents and invite them to attend next Sunday s Liturgy, sit together for the service, and then also receive Holy Communion together. If your godparent is not living nearby, we ask you to contact them and let them know that you will be praying for them, especially during the Liturgy. If your godparent is deceased, remember them in prayer on this special day. Because baptism has been called Illumination and brings us out of the darkness of sin and into the light of Christ, the role of the godparent is critical, ensuring that the Light of Christ continues to shine in the soul of the godchild. It is for this reason that the role as godparent is an awesome responsibility and is not to be considered a one-day event. The Church encourages all, who stand as godparents, to do so with the understanding that this role of godparent is more than just buying birthday and Christmas presents. Because this is a spiritual relationship, as we grow spiritually in our Faith and in our relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus, we must also encourage our godchildren to grow in the same way. With the celebration next week of Godparent Sunday, may we be reminded of the words that we spoke on behalf of our godchildren. Whenever we hear the Nicene Constantinopolitan Creed being recited in the Church or in our private prayers, may we remember this day and celebrate our Faith. A faithful godparent will be a friend in Christ and maintain close contact with his godchild. The focus at all times is the progress of the child in the knowledge and practice of the Orthodox Faith. According to some, Hierotheus, like Saint Dionysius, was a member of the court of Mars Hill. Having first been instructed in the Faith of Christ by Paul, he became Bishop of Athens. Dionysius elaborated on Hierotheus' concise and summary teachings concerning the Faith. He too was brought miraculously by the power of the Holy Spirit to be present at the Dormition of the Theotokos, when, together with the sacred Apostles, he became a leader of the divine hymnody. "He was wholly transported, wholly outside himself and was so deeply absorbed in communion with the sacred things he celebrated in hymnology, that to all who heard him and saw him and knew him, and yet knew him not, he seemed to be inspired of God, a divine hymnographer," as Dionysius says (On the Divine Names, 3:2).

And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. THE GOSPEL Luke 6:31-36 The Lord said, "And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful."
