4 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ: Ανάγνωσμα: Πράξ. 11, Οι χριστιανοί που είχαν διασκορπιστεί από τα Ιεροσόλυμα μετά το διωγμό που ακολούθησε το λιθοβολισμό του Στεφάνου έφτασαν ως τη Φοινίκη, την Κύπρο και την Αντιόχεια. Σε κανέναν δεν κήρυτταν για το Χριστό παρά μόνο στους Ιουδαίους. Ανάμεσά τους ήταν και μερικοί Κύπριοι και Κυρηναίοι, που είχαν έρθει στην Αντιόχεια και κήρυτταν στους ελληνόφωνους Ιουδαίους το χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα, ότι ο Ιησούς είναι ο Κύριος. Η δύναμη του Κυρίου ήταν μαζί τους, και πολλοί ήταν εκείνοι που πίστεψαν και δέχτηκαν τον Ιησού για Κύριό τους. Οι ειδήσεις γι αυτά έφτασαν και στην εκκλησία των Ιεροσολύμων έτσι έστειλαν το Βαρνάβα να πάει στην Αντιόχεια. Αυτός, όταν έφτασε εκεί και είδε το έργο της χάριτος του Θεού, χάρηκε και τους συμβούλευε όλους να μένουν αφοσιωμένοι στον Κύριο με όλη τους την καρδιά. Ο Βαρνάβας ήταν άνθρωπος αγαθός και γεμάτος Άγιο Πνεύμα και πίστη. Έτσι, πολύς κόσμος προστέθηκε στους πιστούς του Κυρίου. Ύστερα ο Βαρνάβας πήγε στην Ταρσό για να αναζητήσει το Σαύλο. Όταν τον βρήκε τον έφερε στην Αντιόχεια. Εκεί συμμετείχαν στις συνάξεις της εκκλησίας για έναν ολόκληρο χρόνο και δίδαξαν πολύ κόσμο. Επίσης στην Αντιόχεια για πρώτη φορά ονομάστηκαν οι μαθητές του Ιησού «Χριστιανοί». Εκείνες τις μέρες κατέβηκαν από τα Ιεροσόλυμα προφήτες Στην Αντιόχεια. Ένας απ αυτούς, που τον έλεγαν Άγαβο, προανάγγειλε με το φωτισμό του Αγίου Πνεύματος ότι θα πέσει σ όλη την οικουμένη μεγάλη πείνα, πράγμα που έγινε όταν αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Κλαύδιος. Οι χριστιανοί στην Αντιόχεια αποφάσισαν να στείλουν βοήθεια στους αδελφούς που κατοικούσαν στην Ιουδαία, ό,τι μπορούσε ο καθένας. Αυτό κι έκαναν: έστειλαν τη βοήθειά τους με το Βαρνάβα και το Σαύλο στους πρεσβυτέρους των Ιεροσολύμων. EPISTLE: Acts of the Apostles 11:19-30 IN THOSE DAYS, those apostles who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to none except Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians. Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabos stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius. And the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brethren who lived in Judea, and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ: Κυριακή της Σαμαρείτιδος, Ευαγγ. ανάγνωσμα: Ιωάννου 4, 5-42 Έφτασε έτσι σε μια πόλη της Σαμαρείας που λεγόταν Συχάρ, κοντά στο χωράφι που είχε δώσει ο Ιακώβ στο γιο του τον Ιωσήφ. Εκεί βρισκόταν το πηγάδι του Ιακώβ. Ο Ιησούς, κουρασμένος από την πεζοπορία, κάθισε κοντά στο πηγάδι ήταν γύρω στο μεσημέρι. Οι μαθητές του είχαν πάει στην πόλη να αγοράσουν τρόφιμα. Έρχεται τότε μια γυναίκα από τη Σαμαρεία να βγάλει νερό. Ο Ιησούς της λέει: «δώσ μου να πιω». Η γυναίκα του απάντησε: «εσύ είσαι Ιουδαίος και εγώ Σαμαρείτισσα. Πώς ζητάς να σου δώσω νερό να πιείς; Οι Ιουδαίοι αποφεύγουν κάθε επικοινωνία με τους Σαμαρείτες». Ο Ιησούς της απάντησε: «αν ήξερες τη δωρεά του Θεού και ποιός είναι αυτός που σου λέει «δώσ μου να πιώ», τότε εσύ θα του ζητούσες τη δωρεά του Θεού, και εκείνος θα σου έδινε ζωντανό νερό». Του λέει η γυναίκα «Κύριε, εσύ δεν έχεις ούτε 4

5 καν κουβά, και το πηγάδι είναι βαθύ, από πού, λοιπόν, το έχεις το τρεχούμενο νερό; Αυτό το πηγάδι μας το χάρισε ο προπάτοράς μας ο Ιακώβ, ήπιε από αυτό ο ίδιος και οι γιοι του και τα ζωντανά του. Μήπως εσύ είσαι ανώτερος από αυτόν; Ο Ιησούς της απάντησε: «όποιος πίνει από αυτό το νερό θα διψάσει πάλι, όποιος όμως πιει από το νερό που θα του δώσω εγώ δε θα διψάσει ποτέ, αλλά το νερό που θα του δώσω θα γίνει μέσα του μια πηγή που θα αναβλύζει νερό ζωής αιώνιας. Του λεει η γυναίκα: «Κύριε, δώσ μου αυτό το νερό για να μη διψάω, και ούτε να έρχομαι ως εδώ για να το παίρνω». Τότε ο Ιησούς της είπε: «πήγαινε να φωνάξεις τον άντρα σου και έλα εδώ». Δεν έχω άντρα, απάντησε η γυναίκα. Ο Ιησούς της λεει: «σωστά είπες, δεν έχω άντρα, γιατί πέντε άντρες πήρες και αυτός που μαζί του τώρα ζεις δεν είναι άντρα σου, αυτό που είπες είναι αλήθεια». Του λεει η γυναίκα: «Κύριε, βλέπω ότι εσύ είσαι προφήτης, οι προπάτορές μας λάτρεψαν τον Θεό σε αυτό το βουνό, εσείς όμως λετε ότι στα Ιεροσόλυμα βρίσκεται ο τόπος, όπου πρέπει κανείς να τον λατρεύει. Πίστεψέ με, γυναίκα, της λεει τότε ο Ιησούς, είναι κοντά ο καιρός που δε θα λατρεύετε τον Πατέρα ούτε σε αυτό το βουνό, ούτε στα Ιεροσόλυμα. Εσείς οι Σαμαρείτες λατρεύετε αυτό που δεν ξέρετε, εμείς όμως λατρεύουμε αυτό που ξέρουμε, γιατί η σωτηρία έρχεται στον κόσμο από τους Ιουδαίους. Είναι όμως κοντά ο καιρός, ήλθε κιόλας, που οι πραγματικοί λατρευτές θα λατρέψουν τον Πατέρα με τη δύναμη του πνεύματος, που αποκαλύπτει την αλήθεια, γιατί έτσι τους θέλει ο Πατέρας αυτούς που τον λατρεύουν. Ο Θεός είναι πνεύμα. Και αυτοί που τον λατρεύουν πρέπει να τον λατρεύουν με τη δύναμη του πνεύματος, που φανερώνει την αλήθεια. Του λεει η γυναίκα: «Ξέρω ότι θα έρθει ο Μεσσίας, δηλαδή ο Χριστός, όταν έρθει εκείνος, θα μας τα εξηγήσει όλα». Εγώ είμαι, της λεει ο Ιησούς, εγώ που σου μιλάω αυτή τη στιγμή. Εκείνη τη στιγμή ήρθαν οι μαθητές και απορούσαν που συνομιλούσε με γυναίκα. Βέβαια, κανείς δεν είπε, τι συζητάς; Ή γιατί μιλάς μαζί της; Τότε η γυναίκα άφησε τη στάμνα της, πήγε στην πόλη και άρχισε να λεει στον κόσμο: «Ελάτε να δείτε εάν ο άνθρωπος που μου είπε όλα όσα έχω κάνει στη ζωή μου, μήπως είναι αυτός ο Μεσσίας; Βγήκαν, λοιπόν, από την πόλη και έρχονταν σε αυτόν. Στο μεταξύ οι μαθητές τον παρακαλούσαν κι έλεγαν: «Διδάσκαλε, φάε, κάτι». Αυτός όμως τους είπε: «Εγώ έχω να φαω τροφή που εσείς δεν την ξέρετε». Κι οι μαθητές έλεγαν μεταξύ τους: «Μήπως του έφερε κανείς να φαει;». Αλλά ο Ιησούς τους είπε: «Δικιά μου τροφή είναι να εκτελώ το θέλημα εκείνου που με έστειλε, και να φέρω σε πέρας το έργο του. Εσείς συνηθίζετε να λετε τέσσερις μήνες ακόμη, κι έφτασε ο θερισμός. Εγώ σας λεω: σηκώστε τα μάτια σας και κοιτάξτε τα χωράφια. Ασπροκοπούν από τα στάχυα τα ώριμα, έτοιμα κιόλας για το θερισμό. Ο θεριστής αμείβεται για τη δουλειά του και συνάζει καρπό για την αιώνια ζωή, έτσι ώστε μαζί να χαίρονται κι αυτός που σπέρνει κι αυτός που θερίζει. Γιατί εδώ αληθεύει η παροιμία «άλλος σπέρνει, κι άλλος θερίζει». Εγώ σας έστειλα να θερίσετε καρπό που γι αυτόν εσείς δεν κοπιάσατε, άλλοι μόχθησαν, κι εσείς μπήκατε εκεί να θερίσετε το δικό τους κόπο». Πολλοί από τους Σαμαρείτες εκείνης της πόλης πίστεψαν σ αυτόν, εξαιτίας της μαρτυρίας της γυναίκας που έλεγε: «Μου είπε όλα όσα έχω κάνει». Όταν λοιπόν οι Σαμαρείτες ήρθαν κοντά του, τον παρακαλούσαν να μείνει μαζί τους, κι έμεινε εκεί δύο ημέρες. Έτσι, πίστεψαν πολύ περισσότεροι ακούγοντας τα λόγια του κι έλεγαν στη γυναίκα: «η πίστη μας δεν στηρίζεται πια στα δικά σου λόγια, γιατί εμείς οι ίδιοι τον έχουμε τώρα ακούσει και ξέρουμε πως πραγματικά αυτός είναι ο σωτήρας του κόσμου, ο Χριστός». GOSPEL: Sunday of the Samaritan Woman The Gospel According to John 4:5-42 At that time, Jesus came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" Jesus said to her, "Everyone who 5

6 drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly." The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he." Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What do you wish?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" They went out of the city and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples besought him, saying "Rabbi, eat." But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." So the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought him food?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor." Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony. "He told me all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard ourselves, and we know that this is indeed Christ the Savior of the world." Consider hosting a coffee hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial, birthday, name day etc. Philoptochos will continue to prepare coffee, guide host and supply paper products. Suggestions for refreshments are fruit, veggies, cookies, pastries, croissants and bagels. Fruit juices are great for children and non-coffee drinkers. Fasting Day suggestions are nuts, hummus, veggies, halva, dried or fresh fruit, chips and salsa and salads. It is recommended to have at least 4 people to help set up, serve and cleanup. 7 Sunday of the Samaritan Woman One of the most ancient cities of the Promised Land was Shechem, also called Sikima, located at the foot of Mount Gerazim. There the Israelites had heard the blessings in the days of Moses and Jesus of Navi. Near to this town, Jacob, who had come from Mesopotamia in the nineteenth century before Christ, bought a piece of land where there was a well. This well, preserved even until the time of Christ, was known as Jacob's Well. Later, before he died in Egypt, he left that piece of land as a special inheritance to his son Joseph (Gen. 49:22). This town, before it was taken into possession by Samaria, was also the leading city of the kingdom of the ten tribes. In the time of the Romans it was called Neapolis, and at present Nablus. It was the first city in Canaan visited by the Patriarch Abraham. Here also, Jesus of Navi (Joshua) addressed the tribes of Israel for the last time. Almost three hundred years later, all Israel assembled there to make Roboam (Rehoboam) king. When our Lord Jesus Christ, then, came at midday to this city, which is also called Sychar (John 4:5), He was wearied from the journey and the heat, and He sat down at this well. After a little while the Samaritan woman mentioned in today's Gospel passage came to draw water. As she conversed at some length with the Lord and heard from Him secret things concerning herself, she believed in Him; through her many other Samaritans also believed. Concerning the Samaritans we know the following: In the year 721 before Christ, Salmanasar (Shalmaneser), King of the Assyrians, took the ten tribes of the kingdom of Israel into captivity, and relocated all these people to Babylon and the land of the Medes. From there he gathered various nations and sent them to Samaria. These nations had been idolaters from before. Although they were later instructed in the Jewish faith and believed in the one God, they worshipped the idols also. Furthermore, they accepted only the Pentateuch of Moses, and rejected the other books of Holy Scripture. Nonetheless, they thought themselves to be descendants of Abraham and Jacob. Therefore, the pious Jews named these Judaizing and idolatrous peoples Samaritans, since they lived in Samaria, the former leading city of the Israelites, as well as in the other towns thereabout. The Jews rejected them as heathen and foreigners, and had no communion with them at all, as the Samaritan woman observed, "the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans" (John 4:9). Therefore, the name Samaritan is used derisively many times in the Gospel narrations. After the Ascension of the Lord, and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the woman of Samaria was baptized by the holy Apostles and became a great preacher and Martyr of Christ; she was called Photine, and her feast is kept on February 26. 7

Both are from Detroit Michigan and have been residents of New Port Richey since Philip was in banking in Detroit for more than 20 years and banking in Florida for more than 20 years in commercial lending and human resources. Maria has been successfully self employed for over 20 years. They have 3 children, 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. 10

15 Μελετώντας κάποιος το ιεραποστολικό έργο του Αποστόλου Βαρνάβα διαπιστώνει με σιγουριά ότι πρόκειται για άνθρωπό με καρδιά γεμάτη αγάπη, καλοσύνη, αλλά και ταπεινοφροσύνη. Το Άγιο Πνεύμα αποτελούσε για τον ίδιο πάντα φάρο φωτεινό αν μάλιστα το συνδυάσουμε με την απέραντη ικανοποίηση και χαρά που του δημιούργησε ψυχικά η ιεραποστολική προσπάθεια μιας ομάδας απλών χριστιανών στην Αντιόχεια η οποία απέδωσε καρπούς αφού αρκετοί πίστεψαν στον Ιησού Χριστό. Δεν θεώρησε για κανένα λόγο ότι οι ανθρώποι αυτοί παρενέβησαν στο αποστολικό του έργο και έτσι να εξοργιστεί αντίθετα «ιδών την χάριν του Θεού εχάρη». Είναι γεγονός ότι πραγματικά πρέπει κάποιος να διακατέχεται με μεγάλα αποθέματα καλοκαρδίας ώστε να αισθάνεται ευτυχισμένος και ικανοποιημένος για την ευδόκιμη υπηρεσία του άλλου και την προσηλωσή του αλλά και την πρόοδο του στα καλά έργα. Όταν δούμε ένα φτωχό, ένα πεινασμένο με ακατάστατη ενδυμασία, ο οποίος δεν έχει που την κεφαλή να κλίνη, ξεχασμένο από όλους χωρίς κάποιο συγγενή τότε το αίσθημα της συμπόνιας πολιορκεί την ψυχή μας. Κάποιες φορές σαν να μας ξυπνάει απο τον εγωισμό μας μια φωνή και να μας θέτει το εξής ερώτημα: «Αν εσύ βρισκόσουν σε αυτή τη κατάσταση θα ήθελες να σε αντιμετωπίζουν με αδιαφορία και δυσπιστία οι ανθρώποι; Τις πλείστες φορές δεν μένουν όλα αυτά απλά συναισθήματα αλλά μεταποιούνται σε έργα καλοσύνης και κατανόησης προς τον πονεμένο. Η εσωτερική χαρά τότε είναι διάχυτη σε εμάς για το καλό που του κάναμε. Πως να μην επαναστατήσει η καρδιά όταν δεί τον οποιοδήποτε να πέφτει στα πλοκάμια επιτηδείων, όταν ένας αδύνατος και απροστάτευτος αδικείται,να χάνει και το πιο λιγοστό περίσσευμα του από τον κάθε ασυνείδητο εκμεταλλευτή. Ποιος πήγε σε εξόδιο ακολουθία (κηδεία) και δεν λύγισε και συγκλονίστηκε βλέποντας και ακούοντας τον πόνο, τον θρήνο και τα κλάματα των οικείων; Σε όλες αυτές τις καταστάσεις οι όποιες κακίες, διαφορές, αντιπαραθέσεις παραμερίζονται και τότε την απόλυτη κυριαρχία επιβάλλεται να την έχει η συμπόνια. Έτσι η εντολή του Αποστόλου Παύλου γίνεται πράξη «χαίρειν μετά χαιρόντων και κλαίειν μετά κλαιόντων» (Ρωμ. ιβ 15). Σύμφωνα με τον ιερό Χρυσόστομο απαιτείται περισσότερη καλλιεργημένη ψυχή, διά να χαρεί κανείς με τους χαίροντες παρά για να κλαίει με τους κλαίοντες. Το «κλαίειν μετά κλαιόντων» το κατορθώνει αύτη η φυσική μας ιδιοσυστασία. Το άλλο όμως έχει ανάγκη γενναίας ψυχής, ώστε όχι μόνον να μην φθονούμεν τον ευδοκιμούντα, αλλά και να χαίρωμεν μαζί του διά τας επιτυχίας του». Αυτό λοιπόν πρέπει να επιδιώκει ο ειλικρινής χριστιανός. Τέκνα του Θεού όλοι είμαστε. Ανήκουμε όλοι στην Εκκλησία του Ιησού Χριστού μας. Υπάρχει η κοινή συμμετοχή στα μυστήρια της χάριτος. Είμαστε μέλοι του αυτού μυστικού σώματος,του οποίου κεφαλή είναι ο Χριστός. Λέγει ο απόστολος Παύλος «είτε πάσχει εν μέλος, συμπάσχει πάντα τα μέλη, είτε δοξάζεται έν μέλος, συγχαίρει πάντα τα μέλη» (Ά Κορ. ιβ 26). Στην Βασιλεία των ουρανών ως μόνη πηγή χαράς θα είναι η δόξα και η μακαριότητα που θα απολαμβάνει ο άνθρωπος. Αυτήν την χαρά προγεύεται στην παρούσα ζωή ο άνθρωπος του Θεού, όταν ατενίζει την προκοπή και την χαρά του άλλου. Τότε οι δοξολογίες οι οποίες αναπέμπονται προς τον Κύριο και Θεο μάς είναι μυριάδες και προέρχονται από τα βάθη της καρδιάς μας. 15

16 Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ is risen! As we approach Mothers Day this year on Sunday, May 14, I can t help but think back to the Mothers Days in Thessaloniki. There, we celebrated mothers on the great feast of Ypapanti, the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, on February 2. That is the day when God s Mother, the Panagia, brought the Christ child, 40 days after His birth, into the Temple in Jerusalem, in accordance with God s Law. What better mother is there than the Panagia, the mother of us all? What better care can a mother offer her child than to obey God s Law and raise that child up to respect and love Him? This year, on the American Mothers Day, let us do the same by coming with our family to the Divine Liturgy on May 14, where we can worship and thank God for His many blessings, and ask Him to continue to keep our families healthy and whole by His grace. Mothers, please be sure to send your small children forward at the homily that day so that I can engage them in a children s sermon. And children, please be sure to send your mothers forward at the end so that we can hand them a beautiful fresh carnation and thank them for all their hard work, love, and sacrifice to both their families and the church.
