Suhayda Nick Harisiadis, Protopsaltis ST PHOTIOS THE GREAT, PATRIARCH OF CONSTANTINOPLE Commemorated on February 6 Saint Photios the Great, Patriarch of Constantinople, lived during the ninth century, and came from a family of zealous Christians. His father Sergios died as a martyr in defense of holy icons. Saint Photios received an excellent education and was considered one of the most brilliant minds in the empire. In 857 Patriarch Ignatios (October 23) was deposed from the See of Constantinople. The bishops, knowing the piety and extensive knowledge of Photios, informed the emperor that he was a man worthy to occupy the archpastoral throne. Saint Photios, still a layman, passing through all the clerical ranks in six days, was consecrated bishop and elevated to the patriarchal throne. Discord, however, arose within the Church. The Synod of 861 was called to end the unrest, at which the deposition of Ignatios and the installation of Photios as patriarch were confirmed. Pope Nicholas I, whose envoys were present at this council, hoped that by recognizing Photios as patriarch he could subordinate him to his power. When the new patriarch proved unsubmissive, Nicholas anathematized Photios at a Roman council. A period known as the Photian Schism between Constantinople and Rome began and lasted until 879. Until the end of his life Saint Photios was a firm opponent of papal intrigues and designs upon the Orthodox Church of the East. In 864, Bulgaria voluntarily converted to Christianity. The Bulgarian prince Boris was baptized by Patriarch Photios himself. Later, Saint Photios sent an archbishop and priests to baptize the Bulgarian people. In 865, Saints Cyril and Methodios were sent to preach Christ in the Slavonic language. However, the partisans of the Pope incited the Bulgarians against the Orthodox missionaries. The papal legates began to substitute Latin teachings and customs in place of Orthodox belief and practice. Saint Photios, as a firm defender of truth and denouncer of falsehood, wrote an encyclical informing the Eastern bishops of the Pope s actions, indicating that the departure of the Roman Church from Orthodoxy was not only in ritual, but also in its confession of faith. A council was convened, censuring the arrogance of the West. In 867, Basil the Macedonian seized the imperial throne, after murdering the emperor Michael. Saint Photios denounced the murderer and would not permit him to partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. Therefore, he was removed from the patriarchal throne and Patriarch Ignatios was restored as patriarch. The Synod of 869 met to investigate the conduct of Saint Photios. This council took place with the parti cipation of papal legates, who demanded that the participants sign a document (Libellus) condemning Photios and recognizing the primacy of the Pope. The Eastern bishops would not agree to this, and argued with the legates. But the Latin faction was victorious. Although their judgment was baseless, they anathematized Patriarch Photios. The saint was sent to prison for seven years. In 879, two years after the death of Patriarch Ignatios, another council was summoned (many consider it the Eighth Ecumenical Council), and again Saint Photios was acknowledged as the lawful archpastor of the Church of Constantinople. Pope John VIII, declared former papal decisions about Photios annulled. The council acknowledged the unalterable character of the Nicean-Constantinople Creed, and rejected the Latin distortion ( filioque ). Under Emperor Basil s successor, Leo, Saint Photios again endured false denunciations. Again deposed from his See in 886, the saint completed the course of his life in 891. The Orthodox Church venerates Saint Photios as a pillar and foundation of the Church, an inspired guide of the Orthodox, and Equal to the Apostles. From the OCA Department of Religious Education

There are some days when Memorials are not permitted please call the church office before planning. Customarily, Memorials take place at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. After three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. Please also remember that we have discontinued the custom of placing candles in the kolyva. WHO CAN RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION? Because receiving Holy Communion or any other Sacrament is an expression of our acceptance of the dogmatic and moral teachings of the Orthodox Faith, only Orthodox Christians (by baptism or chrismation) in good standing may participate. For this reason, persons who do not agree with these teachings, or not in good standing (for example, married outside the church, or unmarried but sexually active, or civilly divorced but not ecclesiastically divorced), must return to good standing in order to participate in Orthodox Sacraments such as Holy Communion and Unction. This is also why Orthodox Christians do not receive sacraments in non-orthodox churches. THE FIRST WEEK OF THE TRIODION the Triodion is the name of the book used in Orthodox Christian worship during the periods of pre-lent, Great Lent and Holy Week. The pre-lenten period is referred to as the Triodion season, and it begins today. During the first week of Triodion, there is no fasting. TSIKNOPEMPTI DINNER Join us Thursday, February 16 at 6 pm for a delicious dinner hosted by our Philoptochos. This is the last weekday on which meat is served before Great Lent begins. The guest speaker will be Fr. Michael Oleksa, speaking about the Missionary Importance of the Alaskan Saints Today.
