Mode 4. For the Hieromartyr. Becoming a partner with the Apostles in way of life and successor to their thrones, O God-inspired Saint, in the active life you found an entrance to contemplation. Hence you rightly expounded the word of truth, and you shed your blood in struggling for the faith, O Hieromartyr Anthimos. Intercede with Christ our God, beseeching Him to save our souls. Mode pl. 4. For the Devout Man. With the rivers of your tears you made the barren desert bloom; and with your sighs from deep within, you made your labors bear their fruits a hundredfold; and you became a star, illuminating the world by your miracles, O Theoktistos our devout father. BRETHREN, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. Ὅτε δὲ ἤγγισεν ὁ καιρὸς τῶν καρπῶν, ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς λαβεῖν τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτοῦ. Ὅταν οὖν ἔλθῃ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τί ποιήσει τοῖς γεωργοῖς ἐκείνοις;λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Κακοὺς κακῶς ἀπολέσει αὐτούς, καὶ τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἐκδώσεται ἄλλοις γεωργοῖς, οἵτινες ἀποδώσουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς καρποὺς ἐν τοῖς καιροῖς αὐτῶν. Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ιησοῦς, Οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς, Λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας παρὰ κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστιν θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν. The Lord said this parable, There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying They will respect my son. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance. And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? They said to him, He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons. Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the scriptures: The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord s doing, and it was marvelous in our eyes? He signified only in a hidden way that he would give the vineyard to others, not mentioning the Gentiles and not affording his opponents a handle to use to attack him. It was for this reason that he spoke in parables, that they themselves might pass the sentence. St. John Chrysostom

12 Hieromartyr Anthimus of Nicomedia 3 September The Hieromartyr Anthimus, Bishop of Nicomedia, and those with him suffered during the persecution against Christians under the emperors Diocletian ( ) and Maximian ( ). The persecution became particularly intense after a fire at the imperial court at Nicomedia. The pagans accused the Christians of setting the fire and reacted against them with terrible ferocity. In Nicomedia alone, on the day of the Nativity of Christ, as many as twenty thousand Christians were burned inside a church. However, this monstrous inhumanity did not frighten the Christians, who firmly confessed their faith and endured martyrdom for Christ. Sts Dorotheus, Mardonius, Migdonius, Peter, Indes and Gorgonius died during this period. One of them was beheaded by the sword, others perished by burning, or being buried alive, or by drowning in the sea. The soldier Zeno boldly denounced the emperor Maximian, for which he was stoned, and then beheaded. Then the holy Virgin Martyr Domna, a former pagan priestess, perished at the hands of the pagans, and also Saint Euthymius, because of their concern that the bodies of the holy martyrs should be buried. Bishop Anthimus, who headed the Church of Nicomedia, hid himself in a village not far from Nicomedia at the request of his flock. From there he sent letters to the Christians, urging them to cleave firmly to the holy Faith and not to fear tortures. One of his letters, sent with Deacon Theophilus, was intercepted and given to the emperor Maximian. Theophilus was interrogated and died under torture, without revealing to his torturers the whereabouts of Bishop Anthimus. After a while Maximian managed to learn where Saint Anthimus was, and sent a detachment of soldiers after him. The bishop met them along the way, but the soldiers did not recognize the saint. He invited them to join him and provided a meal, after which he revealed that he was the one they sought. The soldiers did not know what to do. They wanted to leave him and tell the emperor that they had not found him. Bishop Anthimus was not one to tolerate a lie, and so he would not consent to this. The soldiers came to believe in Christ and received holy Baptism. The saint ordered them to carry out the emperor s instructions. When Bishop Anthimus was brought before the emperor, the emperor ordered that the instruments of execution be brought out and placed before him. Do you think, emperor, to frighten me with these tools of execution? asked the saint. No indeed, you cannot frighten one who wishes to die for Christ! Execution is frightening only for the cowardly, for whom the present life is most precious. The emperor then directed that the saint be fiercely tortured and beheaded by the sword. Bishop Anthimus joyfully glorified God with his last breath, and received the crown of martyrdom.

13 Ὁ Ἅγιος Ἄνθιμος Ἐπίσκοπος Νικομήδειας 3 Σεπτεµβρίου Ἔζησε στὰ τέ η τοῦ 3ου αἰῶνα μ.χ. καὶ πατρίδα του ἦταν ἡ Νικομήδεια. Ἀπὸ μικρὸς διακρίθηκε γιὰ τὸν εὐσεβῆ ζῆ ο του πρὸς τὰ θεία. Ὅταν ἐνηλικιώθηκε, ἡ ζωὴ του ἦταν ὑπόδειγμα σωφροσύνης καὶ ἀγάπης. Ἐπειδὴ πλούσια κατεῖχε τὸν θησαυρὸ τῶν θείων ἀ ηθειῶν, ἡ θερμή του διδασκαλία, ἐμπνεόμενη ἀπὸ ἀποστολικὸ ζῆ ο, ἔβρισκε σχεδὸν πάντα ἀνταπόκριση στὶς ψυχὲς τῶν πιστῶν. Ἡ πνευματικὴ ἱκανότητα τοῦ Ἄνθιμου ὤθησε τοὺς χριστιανοὺς τῆς Νικομήδειας καὶ τὸν ἔπεισαν νὰ γίνει ἱερέας καὶ ἀργότερα ἐπίσκοπός τους. Ὅταν, ὅμως, ἔγινε ὁ διωγμὸς ἐπὶ Διοκλητιανού, τὸν κυνήγησαν καὶ τὸν συνέ αβαν. Ὁ Διοκλητιανὸς τοῦ πρότεινε νὰ θυσιάσει στοὺς Θεοὺς γιὰ νὰ κερδίσει τὴν ζωή του, ἀ ιῶς τὸν περίμεναν φρικτὰ βασανιστήρια, καὶ τοῦ ἔδειξε τὰ ὄργανα ποὺ θὰ τὸν βασάνιζαν. Ὁ Ἄνθιμος εἶπε: «Γιατὶ μοῦ τὰ δείχνεις; Γιὰ νὰ μὲ φοβίσεις; Αὐτὰ ἂς τὰ φοβοῦνται ἐκεῖνοι, γιὰ τοὺς ὁποίους ἡ παροῦσα ζωὴ εἶναι μόνο ἡδονὴ καὶ τὴν στέρησή της θεωροῦν μεγά η ἀπώ εια. Ἀ ὰ σὲ μένα, ὅπως καὶ σὲ κάθε χριστιανό, αὐτὰ δὲν ἀσκοῦν καμιὰ γοητεία. Τὸ σῶμά μου εἶναι πρόσκαιρο καὶ εὐτελές, ποὺ μόνη ἀξία ἔχει, ὅταν ἁγιασθεῖ διὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ δοθεῖ εἰς τὴν κατὰ Χριστὸν ζωή. Ἑπομένως, τιμωρίες καὶ βάσανα εἶναι γιὰ μένα πιὸ ποθητὰ ἀπὸ τοῦ νὰ ἀρνηθῶ τὸν Σωτῆρα μου». Τότε, ἀφοῦ τὸν βασάνισαν φρικτά, τελικὰ τὸν ἀποκεφά ισαν. Ἀπολυτίκιον. Ἦχος δ Ὡς φοῖνιξ ἐξήνθησας, τῇ Ἐκκλησίᾳ Χριστοῦ, καρποὶς τοῖς τῶν λόγων σου, τῶν εὐσεβῶν τὰς ψυχάς, ἐκτρέφων ἐν χάριτι ὅθεν καὶ ἐναθ ήσας, Πάτερ Ἄνθιμε χαίρων, ὤφθης Ἱερομάρτυς, εὐκλεής τοῦ Σωτῆρος, ᾧ πρέσβευε δεόμεθα, ὑπὲρ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν. Μεγαλυνάριον. Χαίροις τοῦ Σωτῆρος μυσταγωγέ, τῶν Ἀρχιερέων, ὑποτύπωσις καὶ κανών χαίροις τῶν Μαρτύρων, σύναθ ος καὶ ἀ είπτης, Ἄνθιμε Ἱεράρχα, ἡμῶν ἀντί ηψις. Although they were hard of heart, nevertheless they were unable to deny Jesus straightforward statements and understood that all the judgments of the Lord were directed against themselves. So they determined indeed to kill him but feared the crowd that considered him to be a prophet. A crowd is always easily moved, not persisting with their will in their resolution. Additionally they are like waves, which opposite winds blown to and fro. The one they now honor and revere as a prophet they later shout against: Crucify, crucify such a man. St. Jerome
