Brethren, it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if Continued on next page

I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost." Translation of the relics of St John Chrysostom Saint John Chrysostom This great ecumenical teacher and hierarch died in the city of Comana in the year 407 on his way to a place of exile. He had been condemned by the intrigues of the empress Eudoxia because of his daring denunciation of the vices ruling over Constantinople. The transfer of his venerable relics was made in the year 438, thirty years after the death of the saint during the reign of Eudoxia s son emperor Theodosius II ( ). Saint John Chrysostom had the warm love and deep respect of the people, and grief over his untimely death lived on in the hearts of Christians. Saint John s disciple, Saint Proclus, Patriarch of Constantinople ( ), during services in the Church of Hagia Sophia, preached a sermon praising Saint John. He said, O John, your life was filled with sorrow, but your death was glorious. Your grave is blessed and reward is great, by the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ O graced one, having conquered the bounds of time and place! Love has conquered space, unforgetting memory has annihilated the limits, and place does not hinder the miracles of the saint. Those who were present in church, deeply touched by the words of Saint Proclus, did not allow him even to finish his sermon. With one accord they began to entreat the Patriarch to intercede with the emperor, so that the relics of Saint John might be brought back to Constantinople. 27 January The emperor, overwhelmed by Saint Proclus, gave his consent and gave the order to transfer the relics of Saint John. But those he sent were unable to lift the holy relics until the emperor realized that he had sent men to take the saint s relics from Comana with an edict, instead of with a prayer. He wrote a letter to Saint John, humbly asking him to forgive his audacity, and to return to Constantinople. After the message was read at the grave of Saint John, they easily took up the relics, carried them onto a ship and arrived at Constantinople. The coffin with the relics was placed in the Church of Holy Peace (Hagia Eirene). When Patriarch Proclus opened the coffin, the body of Saint John was found to be incorrupt. The emperor approached the coffin with tears, asking forgiveness for his mother, who had banished Saint John. All day and night people did not leave the coffin. In the morning the coffin was brought to the Church of the Holy Apostles. The people cried out, Father, take up your throne. Then Patriarch Proclus and the clergy standing by the relics saw Saint John open his mouth and say, Peace be to all. Many of the sick were healed at his tomb. The celebration of the transfer of the relics of Saint John Chrysostom was established in the ninth century.

7 Ἀνακομιδὴ Λειψάνων Ἁγίου Χρυσοστόμου 27 Ιανουαρίου Ὁ ἱερὸς Ἰωάννης ὁ Χρυσόστομος, ἐπειδὴ δὲν ἔκανε διακρίσεις ἀνάμεσα στὰ πρόσωπα στὴν ἀπόδοση τοῦ δικαίου καὶ ἔ εγχε καὶ τὴν ἴδια τὴν βασί ισσα Εὐδοξία γιὰ τὶς παρανομίες καὶ τὶς ἀδικίες της, ἐξορίσθηκε δύο φορές, ἀ ὰ καὶ πά ι ἀνακλήθηκε ἀπὸ τὴν ἐξορία. Ἐξορίστηκε ὅμως καὶ πά ι γιὰ τρίτη φορά. Ἡ ἔκπτωση τοῦ ἱεροῦ Χρυσοστόμου ἀπὸ τὸν Πατριαρχικὸ θρόνο προκά εσε σχίσμα μέσα στὴν Ἐκκλησία. Ὀπαδοί του, ποὺ καλοῦνταν «Ἰωαννίτες», δὲν ἀναγνώριζαν τὸν διάδοχό του, παρὰ τὶς ἐπίμονες συστάσεις νὰ ὑπακούσουν στοὺς νέους ἐκκλησιαστικοὺς ἄρχοντες καὶ νὰ διαφυλάξουν τὴν ἑνότητα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας. Ὁ Ἅγιος Ἰωάννης ὁ Χρυσόστομος ὁδηγήθηκε στὴν Κουκουσὸ καὶ ἀπὸ ἐκεῖ στὴν Ἀραβισσὸ καὶ ἔπειτα, στὶς 10 Ἰουνίου τοῦ ἔτους 404 μ.χ., στὴν Πιτιούντα τοῦ Πόντου. Ἡ πορεία του μέχρι ἐκεῖ, ἦταν ὄχι μόνο περιπετειώδης, ἀ ὰ κυριολεκτικὰ μαρτυρική, γεμάτη ἀπὸ κακουχίες καὶ δεινοπαθήματα. Ἐκεῖ λοιπόν, στὴν Πιτιούντα, ὁ ἔνσαρκος Ἄγγελος κλήθηκε ἀπὸ τὸν πάντων Δεσπότη στὶς αἰώνιες σκηνές, τὸ ἔτος 407 μ.χ., ἐνῶ τὸ ἅγιο σκήνωμά του ἐνταφιάσθηκε στὰ Κόμανα τοῦ Πόντου μαζὶ μὲ τὰ ἅγια λείψανα τῶν Ἁγίων Μαρτύρων Βασιλίσκου καὶ Λουκιανοῦ, καθὼς εἶχε ἀποκαλυφθεῖ σὲ αὐτὸν ἀπὸ αὐτοὺς τοὺς ἴδιους διὰ νυκτερινῆς ὀπτασίας, ὅταν ἀκόμη ζοῦσε. Τὸ σχίσμα τῶν «Ἰωαννιτῶν» ἀποκαταστάθηκε μὲ τὴν ἀνακομιδὴ τῶν ἱερῶν λειψάνων τοῦ Ἁγίου στὴν Κωνσταντινούπολη, τὸ ἔτος 438 μ.χ., ἐπὶ Πατριάρχου Πρόκλου. Ἡ μεταφορὰ τῶν ἱερῶν λειψάνων ἀπὸ τὰ Κόμανα συνοδεύτηκε ἀπὸ μία ἐπιστολὴ διαταγὴ τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα Θεοδοσίου Β, υἱοῦ τοῦ Ἀρκαδίου καὶ τῆς Εὐδοξίας. Αὐτὴ τὴν ἐπιστολὴ τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα τὴν πῆγαν στὸν Ἅγιο καὶ τὴν τοποθέτησαν πάνω στὴν λάρνακά του. Τότε ὁ Ἅγιος ἔδωσε τὸν ἑαυτό του στοὺς ἀπεσταλμένους τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα καὶ ἔτσι αὐτοὶ μετέφεραν τὴν λάρνακα ποὺ περιεῖχε τὸ ἅγιο λείψανο στὴν Κωνσταντινούπολη, χωρὶς νὰ κοπιάσουν καθό ου. Ἡ ὑποδοχὴ τῶν ἱερῶν λειψάνων τοῦ Ἁγίου ὑπῆρξε πα αϊκή. Σύσσωμος λαός, κλῆρος καὶ μοναχοί, μὲ ἐπικεφαλῆς τὸν αὐτοκράτορα, τοὺς αὐ ικούς, τὴ σύγκλητο καὶ ὅ ους τους ἄρχοντες, ὑποδέχθηκαν καὶ προσκύνησαν μὲ σεβασμὸ τὰ λείψανά του. Μὲ πολὺ εὐ άβεια μετέφεραν ἀρχικὰ τὴ λάρνακα στὸ ναὸ τοῦ Ἀποστό ου Θωμᾶ, στὰ Ἀμαντίου, ἔπειτα δὲ στὸ ναὸ τῆς Ἁγίας Εἰρήνης. Ἐκεῖ ἔβαλαν τὸ ἅγιο λείψανο πάνω στὸ σύνθρονο καὶ ἅπαντες ἐβόησαν: «Ἀπό αβε τὸν θρόνο σου, Ἅγιε». Στὴ συνέχεια ἡ λάρνακα τοποθετήθηκε σὲ αὐτοκρατορικὴ ἅμαξα καὶ μεταφέρθηκε στὸ περιώνυμο ναὸ τῶν Ἁγίων Ἀποστό ων. Ἐκεῖ ἔβαλαν τὸ ἅγιο λείψανο πάνω στὴν ἱερὴ καθέδρα καὶ ἔγινε τὸ θαῦμα: ὁ Ἅγιος ἐπεφώνησε πρὸς τὸν λαὸ τὸ «Εἰρήνη πᾶσι». Ἔπειτα τὸ ἐναπέθεσαν μέσα στὸ Ἅγιο Βῆμα, κάτω ἀπὸ τὴν Ἁγία Τράπεζα. Ἡ Σύναξη τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἰωάννου τοῦ Χρυσοστόμου ἐτελεῖτο στὸ πάνσεπτο ναὸ τῶν Ἁγίων Ἀποστό ων. Ἱερὰ λείψανα τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἰωάννου τοῦ Χρυσοστόμου ἀφιέρωσε διὰ χρυσοβού ου στὴ Μονὴ Μεγίστης Λαύρας τοῦ Ἁγίου Ὄρους ὁ αὐτοκράτορας Ἰωάννης Τσιμισκὴς ( ) καὶ τεμάχιο τῆς ἀριστερᾶς χειρὸς ὁ Ἀνδρόνικος ὁ Παλαιολόγος ( ), διὰ χρυσοβού ου, τὸν Ἰού ιο τοῦ ἔτους 1284, στὴ Μονὴ Φιλοθέου του Ἁγίου Ὅρους. Ἐπίσης, τμήματα τοῦ ἱεροῦ λειψάνου φυλάσσονται στὶς μονὲς Βατοπαιδίου, Ἰβήρων, Ἁγίου Διονυσίου καὶ Δοχειαρίου.

9 Sunday of Zacchaeus The paschal season of the Church is preceded by the season of Great Lent, which is also preceded by its own liturgical preparation. The first sign of the approach of Great Lent comes five Sundays before its beginning. On this Sunday the Gospel reading is about Zacchaeus the tax-collector. It tells how Christ brought salvation to the sinful man, and how his life was changed simply because he sought to see who Jesus was (Luke 19:3). The desire and effort to see Jesus begins the entire movement through Lent towards Pascha. It is the first movement of salvation. Our lenten journey begins with a recognition of our own sinfulness, just as Zacchaeus recognized his. He promised to make restitution by giving half of his wealth to the poor, and by paying to those he had falsely accused four times as much as they had lost. In this, he went beyond the requirements of the Law (Ex. 22:3-12). The example of Zacchaeus teaches us that we should turn away from our sins, and atone for them. The real proof of our sorrow and repentance is not just a verbal apology, but when we correct ourselves and try to make amends for the consequences of our evil actions. We are also assured of God s mercy and compassion by Christ s words to Zacchaeus, Today salvation is come to this house (Luke 19:9). After 27 January the Great Doxology at Sunday Matins (when the Tone of the week is Tone 1, 3, 5, 7) we sing the Dismissal Hymn of the Resurrection Today salvation has come to the world, which echoes the Lord s words to Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was short, so he climbed a tree in order to see the Lord. All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23). We are also short in our spiritual stature, therefore we must climb the ladder of the virtues. In other words, we must prepare for spiritual effort and growth. St Zacchaeus is also commemorated on April 20. There certainly is much truth in a certain saying of a philosopher, Every rich man is either wicked or the heir of wickedness. That is why the Lord and Savior says that it is difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Someone may raise the objection, How did wealthy Zacchaeus enter the kingdom of heaven? He gave away his wealth and immediately replaced it with the riches of the heavenly kingdom. The Lord and Savior did not say that the rich would not enter the kingdom of heaven but that they will enter with difficulty. St. Jerome
