4 .:President s Message:. Pancretan and Philanthropy... My fellow Cretans, Since the first day our organization was founded, its purpose has been to (1) promote and develop social, ethnic, and cultural relationships amongst Cretans and their descendants; (2) assist in education by providing scholarships; (3) raise funds and distribute such funds to support educational, philanthropic, and cultural endeavors; and (4) give encouragement and assistance to its members and Chapters in their efforts to promote the Cretan history and culture. Thousands of scholarships have been awarded over the years to many bright, young students. The Scholarship fund was proposed in 1936 and remains a long-standing institution and pillar of our organization and, with everyone s continued support, it will allow us to accomplish all that we set out to do. Our cultural programs are designed to inspire younger generations to keep our traditions alive for generations to come and to reconnect older generations with their origins. We do this by arranging dance, music, and theater experiences for our members, producing and distributing CDs and DVDs, and having special exhibits at our biennial conventions that showcase Cretan culture in its many forms. The PAA has a long history of philanthropy both in America and in Crete and Greece. Most of the domestic philanthropy has been done for individuals by chapters near their geographic location. On a national level, the PAA has distributed funds to support numerous philanthropic causes including: : $130,000 Orphans of Crete; 1948: $350,000 Sanatorium (Venizelion Hospital), $100,000 Hospitals in Hania and Rethymnon; 1954: $50,000 Venizelion Hospital; : $120,000 Dowry fund for poor girls of Crete; 1974: $50,000 Refugees of Cyprus; 1981: $5,000 Old Age Home in Hania; 1983 (PYA) $6,000 Cooley s Anemia; 1991; $5,000 St. Nicholas Ranch. In addition, fundraising drives and individual contributions have supported: Over $250,000 to help the impoverished sick, over $300,000 to help for burials, gifts over $150,000 to the Theological School and other church ministries, a gift of $250,000 to the Greek Government following the end of German occupation, a gift of $160,000 to the Botanical Park in Hania (ongoing), a gift of $80,000 to erect the statue of Spiro Kagiale at Akrotiri. More recently, the PAA has raised and given over $133,000 to fire victims in Greece, purchased a van for the home for autistic children in Crete, and collected and distributed donations for Katrina victims, Iowa flood victims, youth camps, and the children of Africa (through the archdiocese). Since its inception, the Pancretan Endowment Fund has raised and distributed over a million dollars to the University of Crete in support of the Botanical Park in Chania, the Printing Press in Herakleon, the DIAS program scholarships to our youth to attend classes at the University of Crete Campus, and the medical school exchange program. We are all proud of our organization s accomplishments. We do, however, now need to look to the future and create more ways to generate the funds required to keep our giving sustainable for the years ahead. Over the years, the PAA has worked hard to create funds that provide tax exemptions for both individual and corporate donors. The IRS guidelines for managing these funds are very specific, and our board members responsible for managing these funds are careful not to jeopardize our tax-exempt status. The reality of today s economy is that it has created financial stress on many of our members which, in turn, has also made it more of a challenge to raise contributions to help those in need. Our philanthropic, education, and cultural goals require a solid financial foundation to flourish. Through our newest cycle of Leadership Conferences, we have begun tapping the creativity of our chapter leaders to identify new ways of generating revenue, not only for the PAA, but for their local chapters. We are actively researching ways to elevate our fundraising by researching professional fundraising sites and groups for non-profits such as ours. Our Board is also looking at different ways to fundraise, including the possibility of creating new events and also identifying potential new sources of revenues. Our members have demonstrated over the years that, in times of need, they do not hesitate to step up to the plate to do what is necessary to help and support those people and projects that need help. I thank all of those who have donated in the past as well as those who continue to donate today. Without your support and your donations, we would not be able to extend a helping hand to those in need and continue to promote our programs, our youth, our culture and our proud heritage. Αγαπητοί φίλοι, Από την πρώτη μέρα της ίδρυσης του οργανισμού μας, σκοπό ήταν να (1) η προώθηση και ανάπτυξη των κοινωνικών, εθνικών και πολιτιστικών σχέσεων μεταξύ των Κρητικών και των απογόνων τους (2) η βοήθεια στην εκπαίδευση μέσω της παροχής υποτροφιών (3) η συγκέντρωση και η κατανομή χρημάτων για την υποστήριξη εκπαιδευτικών, φιλανθρωπικών, και πολιτιστικών προσπαθειών και (4) η ενθάρρυνση και η παροχή βοήθειας στα μέλη και στους συλλόγους, στις προσπάθειές τους για την προώθηση της κρητικής ιστορίας και πολιτισμού. Χιλιάδες υποτροφίες έχουν απονεμηθεί όλα αυτά τα χρόνια σε πολλούς λαμπρούς νέους φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες. Το Ταμείο Υποτροφιών συστάθηκε το 1936 και εξακολουθεί να είναι ένα ίδρυμα-πυλώνας του οργανισμού μας και, με την συνεχή στήριξη όλων μας, θα μας συνεχίσει να κάνει όλα όσα έχουμε θέσει ως στόχους. Τα πολιτιστικά προγράμματα έχουν σχεδιαστεί για να εμπνεύσουν τις νεότερες γενιές να κρατήσουν ζωντανές τις παραδόσεις μας, και να ασυνδέσουν τις παλαιότερες γενεές με τις ρίζες τους. Από την ίδρυσή της, η Παγκρητική Ένωση Αμερικής έχει διανείμει πάνω από ένα εκατομμύριο δολάρια στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Κρήτης για την υποστήριξη του Βοτανικού Πάρκου στα Χανιά, τις Πανεπιστημιακές Εκδόσεις Κρήτης στο Ηράκλειο (Crete University Press), υποτροφίες του προγράμματος ΔΙΑΣ για τη νεολαία μας στο οποίο παρακολουθούν μαθήματα στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Κρήτης, καθώς και τα προγράμματα ανταλλαγής μαθητών με το Πανεπιστήμιο Είμαστε όλοι περήφανοι για τα επιτεύγματα του οργανισμού μας. Τώρα όμως, πρέπει να κοιτάξουμε το μέλλον και να δημιουργήσουμε τρόπους για την δημιουργία πόρων που απαιτούνται για να κρατήσουν τα προγράμματα δωρεών βιώσιμα για τα επόμενα χρόνια. Με τα χρόνια, η ΠΕΑ έχει εργαστεί σκληρά για να δημιουργήσει ταμεία που παρέχουν φορολογικές απαλλαγές σε ιδιώτες και εταιρικούς χορηγούς. Οι κατευθυντήριες γραμμές της Αμερικανικής εφορίας (ΙRS) για τη διαχείριση αυτών των πόρων είναι πολύ συγκεκριμένες και τα μέλη του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου που είναι υπεύθυνα για τη διαχείριση αυτών των ταμείων είναι πολύ προσεκτικά για να μην θέσουν σε κίνδυνο το δικαίωμα φοροαπαλλαγής του οργανισμού μας. Η πραγματικότητα της σημερινής οικονομίας είναι ότι έχει δημιουργήσει οικονομική πίεση σε πολλά από τα μέλη μας και είναι μεγαλύτερη η πρόκληση για την αύξηση των εισφορών και την βοήθεια όσων έχουν ανάγκη. Οι φιλανθρωπικοί, οι εκπαιδευτικοί και οι πολιτιστικοί στόχοι απαιτούν μια σταθερή οικονομική βάση για να ανθίσουν. Μέσω των νέων Συνεδρίων Ηγεσίας, έχουμε ξεκινήσει να αξιοποιούμε τη δημιουργικότητα των ηγετών των συλλόγων για την εξεύρεση νέων τρόπων για τη δημιουργία εσόδων, όχι μόνο για την ΠΕΑ, αλλά για τους τοπικούς σύλλογους. Ερευνούμε τρόπους για τη συγκέντρωση χρημάτων μας με την βοήθεια εταιρειών εξιδανικευμένων στον τομέα συγκέντρωση χρημάτων για μη κερδοσκοπικούς οργανισμούς, όπως η δική μας. Το Διοικητικό μας Συμβούλιο εξετάζει επίσης διαφορετικούς τρόπους για την συγκέντρωση χρημάτων, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της δημιουργίας εκδηλώσεων και εντοπισμό πιθανών νέων πηγών εσόδων. Τα μέλη μας έχουν δείξει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια ότι, σε περιόδους ανάγκης, δεν διστάζουν να κάνουν ό, τι είναι απαραίτητο για να βοηθήσουν και να υποστηρίξουν τους ανθρώπους και τους σκοπούς που χρειάζονται βοήθεια. Χωρίς την υποστήριξή και τις δωρεές σας, δεν θα ήμασταν σε θέση να δώσουμε ένα χέρι βοήθειας σε όσους έχουν ανάγκη και να συνεχίζουμε να υποστηρίζουμε και να βοηθούμε τα προγράμματά μας, τη νεολαία μας, τον πολιτισμό μας και την υπερήφανη κληρονομιά μας. Message from Maria Stratoudakis PAA Women s Executive Director Message from John Marakis PAA Foundation Chair The 42 nd convention in Florida went down in history with the best memories of Cretan hospitality and entertainment. We all were happy to meet old and new friends. Congratulations to James Boutzoukas, chairman of the convention, for a job well done. Congratulations to Mr. Lampathaki, chairman of the luncheon with fashion show and tribute to the PAA women. The fashion show showcased traditional costumes from various parts of Greece. The convention business meetings ran efficiently and smoothly, thanks to Mr. James Denney. Of all the resolutions passed at the convention, the following ones are of special interest to the women of the PAA: 1) At National Conventions there will be a tribute night to PAA women. 2) Every month, two (2) pages from the KPHTH magazine will be available to the PAA women to write articles on topics such as the history of women s chapters, Cretan traditional recipes, and other topics relating to the Cretan women s history and culture. 3) Starting 2012, the dues to PAA will be increased. Please check with your local chapter to see how this will affect you. During the past two years as a PAA board member, I had the opportunity to visit Cretans all over the USA. I experienced firsthand that there is a small KPHTH everywhere. The Cretan women are strong, devoted mothers and wives, teaching their children Cretan history and culture. We see the results at every convention with the youth participation. I am very proud of the pioneering Cretans who had the forethought and vision to establish the PAA, which is one of the greatest Greek organizations in America today. In cooperation with the PAA third vice president, we had the idea to challenge the chapters to increase their membership for the period of June All the chapters tried their best. One chapter did an outstanding job. The presidency went from mother to daughter, and with the help of the new technology, they achieved a 77% membership increase. The chapter is the Cretan Ladies society KPHTH of Detroit, Michigan. The president is Maria Demos, and her mother is Amalia Kotsifakis, former president of the chapter for many years. Congratulations to Mr. Ted Manousakis, the outgoing president of the PAA, for his effort, time and devotion to the members of the PAA. To the newly elected PAA President John Manos and the PAA Board, good luck in achieving your dreams and goals for the PAA. We welcome the new PYA President, Chris V. Marangoudakis, and all the board and congratulate Eleni Sopasis, the outgoing president, for her devotion to the PYA the last two years. With youth like our youth, we are absolutely positive for the future of the PAA. I want to ensure you that during the next two years I will continue my communication with the PAA women, and I will devote as much time as needed for my duties to the PAA. It will be my pleasure to visit all the women s chapters one more time. During the convention I had a brief meeting with the PAA women and we decided to have a gathering in the middle of February 2012 in Las Vegas. We will meet in Washington D.C. in 2013 and then in 2015 in Salt Lake City. Dear fellow Cretans, My name is John Marakis and at the PAA Convention in Clearwater, Florida I had the honor of being elected as the Chairman of the PAA Foundation. The PAA has a rich history of giving to worthy causes, educating our members on the rich history and culture of Crete, and providing scholarship support to our children for their continuing education both here and in Crete. The PAA Foundation was established to centralize fundraising efforts for the Scholarship Fund, Philanthropic Fund, and the Cultural and Educational Funds. As a 501(c)3, it is also the vehicle for corporations and other organizations to make tax exempt donations to the PAA. We have been able to support all our programs only because of the financial contributions of you, our members. Recently, we have seen this generosity through the wishes of individuals as part of their estate planning or from their survivors. As documented in this issue, we have been honored to receive $40,000 and $10,000, respectively, from the families of Hercules and Matena Kalmer (Kalimerakis) and Charles M. Katsounakis to establish scholarships in their names. There are many ways for you or your business to donate to the PAA Foundation to support one of our three major funds or to support specific programs or worthy causes. Please consider the PAA Foundation and the programs of the PAA as you evaluate your philanthropic goals. Remember, your gift is an investment in our organization. Dear Pancretan Association Scholarship Committee members, As a young Greek-American of Cretan descent, it is a tremendous honor for me to be recognized as one of this year s Pancretan Association scholarship winners. This scholarship will go a long way towards helping me pay for my educational expenses, including books, research materials, and the cost of attending academic conferences, as I enter the third year of my doctoral studies at the University of Texas at Austin. More importantly, however, it is an honor for me to be recognized by my fellow Cretans. My Cretan heritage is an indelible part of my personality and who I am, and I hope to someday add to the many great contributions that Cretans have made to this world. I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the scholarship committee and to the generous donors who have supported students such as myself in their educational and academic endeavors. A report from Jim Saklas PAA Treasurer President Manos has asked that I continue the quarterly reports of the Association s KPHTH and General Operations accounts that former president Manousakis started in January. However, since this is a convention year, this table is for the entire period of the Manousakis administration rather that just the 2nd quarter of calendar year We had hoped to publish this in the July-August issue, but because of space limitations we had to delay it for two months. The committee wishes to convey its sincere thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Emmanuel and Orsa Velivasakis for their strong commitment to our great culture. Their generous donation to the Culture and Education Fund of PAA made the reproduction and distribution of the Arkadi DVD you have received possible. One of the goals of the committee is to find ways to inspire younger generations to keep our traditions alive for generations to come and to reconnect older generations with their origins, and Mr. and Mrs. Velivasakis donation will greatly help in achieving this goal. The PAA and its Culture and Education Committee would also like to send a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Mihalis Balamoutsous, who, at the beginning of 2011, very gracefully accepted our call to translate and create the English subtitles for the wonderful documentary you received with your October KPHTH magazine, Το Αρκάδι των Αγγέλων. It was a very serious and very demanding undertaking, but Mr. Balamoutsos came through with an outstanding end result. We also appreciate the fact that Mr. Balamoutsos has donated his time and effort to PAA s goal, which is to maintain and disseminate our great culture here in US and into Canada. Σας Ευχαριστούμε! Η ΠΕΑ και η Πολιτιστική Εκπαιδευτική Επιτροπή, εκφράζουν τις θερμές ευχρηστίες και ευγνωμοσύνη στον κύριο και την κυρία Εμμανουήλ και Όρσα Βελιβασάκη οι οποίοι συνεχίζοντας την έντονη αφοσίωσή τους στην διατήρηση και διαιώνιση των πολιτιστικών αξιών της πατρίδας μας, στήριξαν οικονομικά την αναπαραγωγή του θαυμάσιου DVD «Το Αρκάδι των Αγγέλων» που λαμβάνετε σήμερα. Τέτοιου είδους οικονομικής στήριξης σε πολιτιστικές πρωτοβουλίες μας ενδυναμώνου, μας τιμούν και μας δίνουν κουράγιο και πεποίθηση, ότι η πολιτιστική φλόγα της Παγκρητικής Ένωσης Αμερικής ποτέ δεν θα σβήσει. Ευχαριστούμε πάρα πολύ! Επίσης η ΠΕΑ και η Πολιτιστική Εκπαιδευτική Επιτροπή της, θέλει να ευχαριστήσει θερμά τον κ. Μιχάλη Μπαλαμούτσο, διευθυντή/ηθοποιό Θεάτρου Κρήτης, ο οποίος στην αρχή το 2011 δέχτηκε χωρίς κανένα ενδοιασμό και με πολύ ευχαρίστηση να αναλάβει την μετάφραση στα Αγγλικά και την δημιουργία υπότιτλων για το τόσο πολύ σπουδαίο ντοκιμαντέρ (DVD) που παίρνετε σήμερα, «Το Αρκάδι των Αγγέλων». Το έργο απαιτούσε πολύ σοβαρότητα στην γνώση της Κρητικής διαλέκτου και νοήματος όπως και στην καλή γνώση της Αγγλικής γλώσσας, και ο κ. Μπαλαμούτσος ανταπεξήλθε επάξια σε αυτό το κάλεσμα και τον ευχαριστούμε γιατί όχι μόνο έκανε εξαίσια δουλειά αλλά και γιατί αυτήν την δουλειά την έκανε δωρεά για τον ιερό σκοπό της Παγκρητικής, που είναι να διατηρήσει και διαδώσει τις αξίες του μεγάλου πολιτισμού μας. Message from Bob Markakis PAA Culture & Education Chair It is a great honor and privilege to serve on the PAA board and to take on the responsibilities of Culture & Education Chair. I m looking forward in building upon the wonderful work that my predecessors have done over the years. The rich culture and heritage of our beloved island of Crete has always been my passion. I was fortunate to live in Crete, during my younger years, and experience the Cretan culture in its purest form. I was immersed in the Cretan heritage and lived the many Cretan customs and traditions, along with participating in many glentia and kantades that my parents villages are known for. For the past 30 years I have provided my contributions, in preserving and promoting this wonderful culture, to many Cretan Associations and their youth that I have worked with. In the next 2 years, as Culture & Education Chair, I will continue to provide my contributions in promoting and instilling the marvelous culture and heritage of Crete to our youth. Together with the other Culture & Education committee members, we will be concentrating our efforts in infusing the many aspects of our culture and heritage (Music, Dance, Theater, Art, History, Literature, Cooking, Embroidery, Traditions etc.) in our youth. In addition, we will also focus our energy in supporting and promoting our local talent build and showcase their capabilities. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in helping out. ΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΟΝ ΕΠΙΚΕΦΑΛΗ ΤΗΣ ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗΣ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΜΟΥ & ΕΚΠΑΙΔΕΥΣΗΣ ΤΗΣ Π.Ε.Α. Είναι μεγάλη μου τιμή και προνόμιο να είμαι μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της Π.Ε.Α. και να αναλάβω τις ευθύνες του επικεφαλή της επιτροπής του Πολιτισμού & Εκπαίδευσης. Ανυπομονώ για να επιοικοδομήσω πάνω στο υπέροχο έργο που οι προκάτοχοί μου έχουν κάνει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια. Ο πλούσιος πολιτισμός και η κληρονομιά του αγαπημένου μας νησιού η Κρήτη ήταν πάντα το πάθος μου. Είχα την τύχη να ζήσω στην Κρήτη, κατά τη διάρκεια των νεανικών μου χρόνων, και γνώρισα τον Κρητικό πολιτισμό στην πιο γνήσια μορφή του. Γαλουχήθηκα στη κληρονομιά της Κρήτης και έζησε τα πολλά ήθη και έθιμα της, καθώς και συμμετήχα σε πολλά γλέντια και καντάδες που είναι γνωστά τα χωριά των γονιών μου. Για τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια, πρόσφερα τη συμβολή μου στη διατήρηση και την προώθηση αυτού του υπέροχου πολιτισμού σε πολλούς Κρητικούς Συλλόγους και της νεολαίας τους, που συνεργάστηκα. Στα επόμενα 2 χρόνια, ως επικεφαλής της επιτροπής του Πολιτισμού & Εκπαίδευσης, θα συνεχίσω να συνεισφέρω στην προώθηση και την εμφύτευση του θαυμάσιου πολιτισμού και της κληρονομιάς της Κρήτης μας στη νεολαία μας. Μαζί με τα άλλα μέλη της επιτροπής του Πολιτισμού & Εκπαίδευσης, θα επικεντρώσουμε τις προσπάθειές μας στη ματάδοση των πολλών φασμάτων του πολιτισμού και της κληρονομιάς μας (Μουσική, Χορός, Θέατρο, Τέχνη, Ιστορία, Λογοτεχνία, Μαγειρική, Κεντήματα, Παραδόσεις κλπ.) στην νεολαίας μας. Επιπλέον, θα εστιάσουμε επίσης την ενέργειά μας στην υποστήριξη και προώθηση των τοπικών ταλέντων μας, να αξιοποιήσουν και να επιδείξων τις ικανότητές τους.
