POINSETTIAS FOR CHRISTMAS To purchase a Christmas poinsettia in honor or in memory of someone, please fill out the enclosed form and return it to the Cathedral office no later than tomorrow, Monday, December 15, Cost is $10 each. As in the past these plants decorate the solea during the Nativity season.

2 CPR CLASS FOR ALL PARISH COUNCIL MEMBERS All current Parish Council members, as well as newly elected/appointed members, are asked to attend a CPR class, specifically scheduled for the Parish Council, on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at 10:00 am at the Hellenic Cultural Center. Please mark your calendars. HELP NEEDED IN MONITORING UPSTAIRS Greek School and Sunday School staff members and especially parents are asked to assist in monitoring the upstairs classrooms and bathrooms during all class sessions and gatherings. The Cathedral staff asks that you turn off ALL lights before exiting the Hellenic Cultural Center, including the Upstairs Commons Area. Also, you are asked to monitor the upstairs bathrooms since a problem of wasting paper products has prevailed for several weeks, particularly in the girls bathroom. Your assistance in curtailing the wastefulness of janitorial supplies and unnecessary utility usage will be greatly appreciated. PTA VASILOPITA FUNDRAISER Under the supervision of Evangelia Bilalis, Holy Trinity Cathedral PTA volunteers baked loaves of the traditional St. Basil's sweet bread, which will be sold today, December 14, and next Sunday, December 21, in the Coffee Room. Each loaf is $10; all loaves are one size. Please see Stephanie Malachias and Sandy Stavrakakis to purchase your New Year's bread. Special thanks are extended to Evangelia and her assistants for working on this project. The Holy Hieromartyr Eleftherios, Bishop of Illyricum St. Eleftherios had Rome as his homeland. Orphaned of his father from childhood, he was taken by his mother Anthia to Anicetus, the Bishop of Rome (some call him Anencletus or Anacletus), by whom he was instructed in the divine Scriptures. Though still very young in years, he was made Bishop of Illyricum by reason of his surpassing virtue and of his teachings, which converted many unbelievers to Christ. However, during a most harsh persecution that was raised against the Christians under Hadrian (reigned ), the Saint was arrested by the tyrants. Enduring many torments for Christ, he was finally put to death by two soldiers about the year 126. As for his Christ-loving mother Anthia, she was also beheaded while embracing the remains of her son and kissing them with maternal affection. Message from Father George Preparing for Regular Communion by Participating in Confession The other day in Bible Study the topic of Confession came up, and I was reminded of a comment that I heard from a former parishioner in Denver. I was speaking in an informal group at a coffee hour when I suggested that they consider participating in the Sacrament of Penance Holy Confession. One of the parishioners turned to me and said, Father, isn t Confession just for the Roman Catholics? I was saddened but not surprised. Often in training our youth in the Faith, we present opportunities at retreats or summer camps for them to participate in Confession. But, between youth and young adults, when is it decided that the teaching of this beautiful healing ministry of the Church should become optional? The Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation (or Confirmation), Holy Communion, Holy Unction, and Holy Confession are not optional but obligatory for an Orthodox Christian. The Sacraments that are optional are Matrimony and Ordination. Confession should be considered akin to our annual physical examination by our physician. The physical exam can address a physical ailment before it becomes worse, and so it is also with Confession. But, rather than the examination of our bodies, it is an examination of our souls or spirit. It allows us to unload any spiritual baggage that may be troubling and keeping us from progressing in our spiritual growth in Christ. As we continue this Advent (Nativity) Fast for another week and a half, plan to schedule your confession to truly prepare your spiritual body for the great feast day of our Lord s Nativity Christmas. EPIPHANY APPLICATIONS DUE THIS WEEK All Dover Bear and Cross Retriever candidate forms must be submitted to the Cathedral office this Friday, December 19, 2014, in order to participate in the 2015 Epiphany Celebration. COMMEMORATIVE ALBUM The compilation of information for the 150 th Anniversary Commemorative Album is proceeding and will be completed in the coming months. The community will be advised when the album is ready for publication and distribution. Copies of the album will also be available for purchase, but the price has not yet been determined. The 150th Anniversary Committee will provide periodic updates on the progress of the completion status of the album. H O L Y T R I N I T Y C A T H E D R AL 2015 EPIPHANY CELEBRATION Dove Release - Cross Retrieval Cathedral Family Luncheon The 2015 Epiphany Celebration, along with the culmination of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, will take place Sunday, January 11, Orthros and Divine Liturgy will be followed by the Blessing of the Waters, Dove Release, and Cross Retrieval along the banks of Bayou St. John. Your support for this spiritually uplifting Cathedral Family event commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan will provide a memorable experience. The swimmer, who retrieves the Cross, will receive a gold cross with chain, a plaque from the community, and acknowledgement at the Family Luncheon and Recognition Ceremony in the Hellenic Cultural Center. All swimmers will receive an Epiphany t-shirt and a complimentary luncheon ticket, as well as be included in a group photograph. Each young man from the community, who is age 16 or older and wishes to be a part of this meaningful Orthodox tradition by swimming to retrieve the cross, must complete an application form, which is available in the Cathedral office. The Bayou has been cleared for safety. A young lady from the community will be selected to release the dove. Dove Bearer nominations may be submitted to the Cathedral office. All completed applications and permission forms must be received by the Cathedral office no later than Friday, December 19, Luncheon tickets $10 per person and $6 for children 12 and under will be on sale in the Coffee Room on Sunday, January 4, and at the door on Sunday, January 11. 4 CHRISTMAS PAGEANT SONG PRACTICE Sunday School students are in final rehearsals for the Annual Christmas Pageant, which is slated for Sunday, December 21. Please note below the important schedule. Sunday, December 14 - Full rehearsal during Sunday School (no lessons). Saturday, December 20 - Full rehearsal at 12:00 pm, after Greek School, and distribution of costumes. Sunday, December 21 - All children must be upstairs, dressed in costume, immediately following Holy Communion. If you have any questions, please contact Christina Kogos at or at cmkogos2@aol.com. Also, contact her if you are unable to attend the full rehearsal on December 20. It is imperative that she has an accurate count of children for this session. GREEK FESTIVAL POSTERS NEEDED The Greek Festival Committee is seeking posters from 1992, 1997, and If you have copies from one or more of these years, please consider donating them to the church. The 1992 and 1997 editions are missing from the Greek Festival collection showcased in the Hellenic Cultural Center. NEW YEAR S EVE DINNER DANCE The Order of St. Markella of Chios is hosting a New Year s Eve Dinner Dance with live music after church services on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, in the Hellenic Cultural Center. Also, both will be distributed at that time to those who placed orders. The Documentary will be shown in the Hellenic Cultural Center on Sunday, December 14, after the Community Christmas Lunch. CATHEDRAL DIRECTORY SECOND PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION Lifetouch will be available on Friday, January 2, and Saturday, January 3, to accommodate parishioners, who previously were unable to schedule a photography session for the Cathedral Directory. For an appointment, you may call the Cathedral office or go online at and select a convenient day and time slot. Please take advantage of this second opportunity to participate in the Cathedral Directory. For your convenience, Presbytera Harriet and Vickie Catsulis will be available in the Coffee Room today to make appointments. DAUGHTERS PASTRY SALE The Daughters Pastry Sale last weekend was very successful. A few orders remain to be picked up, which will be available in the Coffee Room today, December 14, after church services along with a few bags of koulourakia that are for sale. See Barbara Wolf for both. FROZEN PASTRIES FOR SALE Packages of frozen Karidopita and Portokalopita will be sold after church services today, Sunday, December 14, in the Coffee Room. Each container has three pieces of each pastry for $5. Stop by and purchase some as treats for your family or holiday gifts for your friends. PHILOPTOCHOS SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON The Senior Citizens enjoyed the Christmas Luncheon held on Thursday, December 11, in the Coffee Room. The luncheon was sponsored by Nancy Athas, in memory of Alex Athas; Eleni Kampitsis; and Magda Pelias. Sincerest appreciation is extended to the sponsors for their generous support. Many thanks to Evangelia and Petros Bilalis, who cooked a delicious meal that included gumbo, broiled fish with baked potatoes, and a vegetable. A festive strawberry and spinach salad was prepared by Vickie Catsulis, and the meal was served by Philoptochos members. Thank you, ladies. Adding to the Christmas cheer were the beautiful decorations, the "Old Saint Nick Game" and carols sung by the seniors, all organized by Cathy Vial, whose special presentations are always appreciated and enjoyed. What a great surprise it was to hear the Christmas carols sung by the little children from the Cathedral Montessori School. Special thanks to Billie Andersson and all the children for adding to the festive atmosphere in such a wonderful way. THE GOSPEL Luke 14:16-24 The Lord said this parable: "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; and at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.' But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and there is still room.' And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet. For many are called, but few are chosen.'"
