Α Εωθινόν Ε *********************************************************************************** God is Light On the Second Sunday of Great Lent, we celebrate the memory of St. Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica. On this day, the Holy Church speaks to us about the mystery of light, which we must come to know, if we want to behold the Resurrection of Christ. St. Gregory of Thessalonica and the theological arguments of the fourteenth century connected with his name taught that the light of the Transfiguration is uncreated light. Refuting the heresies of the western theologians, this teaching reminded Christians of the words of the Scripture stating that God is light. By confessing God the Father and God the Son, Light from Light, true God of true God, we believe that God the Light created another light the one described in the book of Genesis: God said, let there be light. These dogmatic questions were not abstract or removed from the life of the Church. They should not be removed from us, either. It is wrong to look at them as simple theological or scholarly discussions that have no relation to our life. That would mean only one thing: that the light about which God speaks to us the light in which there is no darkness will remain unseen to us, and we do not regret or repent that we remain in darkness. All the problems in the Church are, in the final analysis, bound up with the fact that certain mysteries of faith become abstract. They cease to be living, essential questions that decide our fate; and we lose the depth of faith, and the fullness of our Christian calling, which we should be realizing in the Church.

You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us. Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed. St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 1:10-14; 2:1-3 "IN THE BEGINNING, Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet?" Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation? Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him. The Gospel of Mark 2:1-12 At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic-"i say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

4 Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου-25 Μαρτίου Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος Παλαμάς λέει ότι η ενσάρκωση δεν θα ήταν δυνατή χωρίς την ελεύθερη ανθρώπινη συμφωνία της Θεοτόκου, όπως και δεν θα ήταν δυνατή χωρίς τη δημιουργική θέληση του Θεού. Την ημέρα του Ευαγγελισμού βλέπουμε στο πρόσωπο της Θεοτόκου μια Παρθένο, η οποία μπόρεσε με όλη τη καρδιά, με όλο το νου, με όλη τη προσωπικότητά της να εμπιστευθεί εντελώς τον Θεό. από μια ομιλία του Μητροπολίτη Αντωνίου Σούροζ (Μπλούμ) για τον Ευαγγελισμό της ΘεοτόκουΕυαγγελισμός σημαίνει καλή είδηση, ότι βρέθηκε σε όλο το ανθρώπινο είδος μια παρθένος, η οποία είχε μια τέτοια εμπιστοσύνη στο Θεό και ήταν με έναν τόσο βαθύ τρόπο ικανή να Τον υπακούει, ώστε μπόρεσε να γεννήσει τον Υιό του Θεού.Η ενσάρκωση του Υιού του Θεού είναι από τη μια πλευρά μια πράξη της δύναμης και της αγάπης του Θεού - τρυφερή και πρόθυμη να σταυρωθεί για να σώσει τον άνθρωπο. Ταυτόχρονα, όμως, είναι μια πράξη της ανθρώπινης ελευθερίας. Ευλογημένο και το παιδί που έχεις στα σπλάχνα σου! προκάλεσαν όχι μόνο έκπληξη και ευσέβεια, μα και φόβο στην ψυχή της παρθένου, που δεν είχε γνωρίσει άντρα ποτέ και δεν μπορούσε να φανταστεί, πώς θα γίνει αυτό.μα εδώ βλέπουμε τη διαφορά μεταξύ του αναποφάσιστου αν και βαθιά πιστού - Ζαχαρία, του πατέρα του Προδρόμου και της πίστης της Θεοτόκου. Και στον Ζαχαρία ο άγγελος είχε προαναγγείλει ότι η γυναίκα του θα γεννήσει γιό - με φυσιολογικό τρόπο, παρά την προχωρημένη ηλικία τους. Και η απάντησή του ήταν η εξής: Πώς μπορεί να γίνει αυτό? Δεν μπορεί! Πώς μπορώ να βεβαιωθώ γι αυτό? Η Θεοτόκος ρωτάει αλλιώς: Πώς μπορεί να συμβεί κάτι τέτοιο σε μένα? Είμαι παρθένος. Και στην απάντηση του αγγέλου, ότι θα γίνει αυτό, αποκρίθηκε με λόγια πλήρους αφοσίωσης. Δίνει τον εαυτό της στα χέρια του Θεού: Είμαι μια δούλη του Κυρίου, ας γίνει το θέλημά Του σ εμένα όπως μου το είπες.η λέξη δούλος ή σκλάβος, όπως την χρησιμοποιούμε σήμερα, μιλάει για σκλαβιά. Στις σλαβικές γλώσσες, δούλο ονόμαζε τον εαυτό του ένας άνθρωπος, ο οποίο έδωσε όλη τη ζωή του, όλη τη θέλησή του σ έναν άλλο άνθρωπο. Και εκείνη έδωσε όντως τη ζωή της στο Θεό, τη θέλησή της, τη μοίρα της, όταν δέχτηκε με πίστη δηλαδή με παντελή εμπιστοσύνη - την προαγγελία, ότι θα γίνει η μητέρα του ενσαρκωμένου Υιού του Θεού. Και η Ελισάβετ λέει γι αυτήν: Χαρά σ αυτή που πίστεψε ότι θα εκπληρωθούν τα λόγια που της είπε ο Κύριος.Στη Θεοτόκο βρίσκουμε μια καταπληκτική ικανότητα να εμπιστευθεί εντελώς το Θεό. Αυτή η ικανότητα δεν είναι φυσιολογική, δεν είναι από τη φύση. Μια τέτοια πίστη μπορεί κανείς να σφυρηλατήσει μέσα του μόνο αν αγνίζει πρώτα την καρδιά του, αν στην πράξη ζεί την αγάπη προς τον Θεό. Μόνο με γενναιότητα! Επειδή οι πατέρες λένε: Χύσε αίμα και θα σου δοθεί το Πνεύμα. Ένας δυτικός συγγραφέας είπε ότι η Ενσάρκωση έγινε δυνατή, όταν η Παρθένος του Ισραήλ ήταν ικανή να εκφράσει με όλες τις σκέψεις της, με όλη την καρδιά της, με όλη τη ζωή της το όνομα του Θεού, ώστε Εκείνος να γίνει σάρκα μέσα της.λοιπόν, αυτό είναι ο Ευαγγελισμός, Η ανθρωπότητα γέννησε, πρόσφερε στο Θεό σαν δώρο την παρθένο, η οποία ήτανε ικανή με τη ελευθερία της να γίνει Μητέρα του Υιού του Θεού, η οποία έδωσε τον εαυτό της ελεύθερα για τη σωτηρία του κόσμου. St. Gregory Palamas The Holy Church calls the second Sunday of Great Lent the Sunday of the Light-Creating Fasts. In its Divine services, in line with the destruction of the sinful condition of man, it is descriptively and touchingly represented in the church hymns, which explains the Gospel parable about the Prodigal son, and praises the fast as a means to the beneficial inner light, and posits in this glorification a new impulse for the ascetic effort of the fast. The Orthodox teaching about fasting as a means for the beneficial inner light is opened with special power in the commemoration on this Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica and Wonderworker (see Nov. 14). St. Gregory is known as the one who exposed the heresy of Barlaam, the Calabrian monk, who rejected the Orthodox teaching about the blessed light, which illuminates the internal person sometimes openly visible (as for example on Tabor and Sinai), and who did not admit the possibility to achieve this inner light through both prayer and fasting and other individual efforts. At the Council in Constantinople called in 1341 concerning this heresy, Barlaam, his disciple Akindynos, and their other accomplices were condemned for this false teaching. And during the subsequent time of his life St. Gregory zealously struggled for Orthodoxy, "not once", but "many times many" through his inspired speeches and writings denying the teachings and compositions of the evil followers of Akindynos and Barlaam. For this ascetic effort for the benefit of the Holy Church, and also for the confession and witness for the Faith and Christ's flock, for the sanctity of the strict ascetic life and the deep edification for all ascetics through his works, St. Gregory is also glorified in the service on this day by the Holy Church. Thus the Holy Church, celebrating on the previous Sunday the triumph of Orthodoxy over all heresies, on the present Sunday celebrates the victory of Orthodox ascetic teachings over all false doctrines opposing it. The first celebration is in general for all Orthodox Christians; the second is for the use of ascetics, the monks. Patriarch Philotheus of Constantinople composed the church service in honor of the originator of this latter celebration, for St. Gregory. In it St. Gregory is also glorified, as "the labor of theology, the flaming mouthpiece of grace, the honorable vessel of the Spirit, the unshakable pillar of the church, the great adornment of the universe", "the sword and arrows for the slanderers" that broke, "the pride of Barlaamites, and any heretical power", "like the web of spiders" he brushed away, "the preacher of the divine light, the initiate of the heavenly mysteries of the Trinity", "the healer of human infirmities", "the most holy father, the good shepherd", "you gave your soul for your sheep", "the firm sufferer and faster", "the advocate of the pious, and the opponent of the impious, the fervent defender of the faith, the great guide and teacher", "the adornment of monastic life, glorified in action and contemplation".

Constantine and Helen Cathedral, and the Church of the Holy Resurrection of Brookville, NY Come join the Young Adults for a Lenten Retreat to St. Nektarios Monastery in Roscoe, N.Y. : March 29th, 2014 We will depart from Sts Constantine and Helen Cathedral at 10:00am and will arrive back into Brooklyn, N.Y. by 8:00pm The day will conclude by celebrating the Great Vespers οf the 4th Sunday of Lent (St. John Climacus) in the Monastery.
