Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed. Προκείμενον. Ἦχος πλ α. ΨΑΛΜΟΙ 11.7,1 Σὺ Κύριε, φυλάξαις ἡμᾶς καὶ διατηρήσαις ἡμᾶς. Στίχ. Σῶσον με, Κύριε, ὅτι ἐκλέλοιπεν ὅσιος. "IN THE BEGINNING, Thou, Lord, didst found the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of thy hands; they will perish, but thou remainest; they will all grow old like a garment, like a mantle thou wilt roll them up, and they will be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years will never end." But to what angel has he ever said, "Sit at my right hand, till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet?" Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation? Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him. 4 Sunday of St. Gregory Palamas The Gospel of Mark 2:1-12 At that time, Jesus entered Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, not even about the door; and he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "My son, your sins are forgiven." Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, "Why does this man speak thus? It is a blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you question thus in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Rise, take up your pallet and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-he said to the paralytic-"i say to you, rise, take up your pallet and go home." And he rose, and immediately took up the pallet and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!" Κατὰ Μᾶρκον Τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, εἰσῆλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς εἰς Καπερναοὺμ δι ἡμερῶν καὶ ἠκούσθη ὅτι εἰς οἶκόν ἐστι. καὶ εὐθέως συνήχθησαν πολλοί, ὥστε μηκέτι χωρεῖν μηδὲ τὰ πρὸς τὴν θύραν καὶ ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον. καὶ ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτὸν παραλυτικὸν φέροντες, αἰρόμενον ὑπὸ τεσσάρων καὶ μὴ δυνάμενοι προσεγγίσαι αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον, ἀπεστέγασαν τὴν στέγην ὅπου ἦν, καὶ ἐξορύξαντες χαλῶσι τὸν κράβαττον, ἐφ ᾧ ὁ παραλυτικὸς κατέκειτο. ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ Ιησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ τέκνον, ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου. ἦσαν δέ τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐκεῖ καθήμενοι καὶ διαλογιζόμενοι ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν τί οὗτος οὕτω λαλεῖ βλασφημίας; τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ Θεός; καὶ εὐθέως ἐπιγνοὺς ὁ Ιησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως αὐτοὶ διαλογίζονται ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς τί ταῦτα διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν; τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν τῷ παραλυτικῷ, ἀφέωνταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι, ἢ εἰπεῖν, ἔγειρε καὶ ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει; ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀφιέναι ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἁμαρτίας - λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ σοὶ λέγω, ἔγειρε καὶ ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου. καὶ ἠγέρθη εὐθέως, καὶ ἄρας τὸν κράβαττον ἐξῆλθεν ἐναντίον πάντων, ὥστε ἐξίστασθαι πάντας καὶ δοξάζειν τὸν Θεὸν λέγοντας ὅτι οὐδέποτε οὕτως εἴδομεν.

5 Γ ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ ΤΩΝ ΝΗΣΤΕΙΩΝ ΣΤΑΥΡΟΠΡΟΣΚΥΝΗΣΕΩΣ Η τρίτη Κυριακή των Νηστειών ονομάζεται <<Κυριακή της Σταυροπροσκύνησης>>. Μετά από τη μεγάλη Δοξολογία στον όρθρο, ο Σταυρός μεταφέρεται σε μια σεμνή πομπή στο κέντρο του ναού και παραμένει εκεί όλη την υπόλοιπη εβδομάδα, οπότε στο τέλος κάθε ακολουθίας γίνεται προσκύνηση του Σταυρού. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι το θέμα του Σταυρού, που κυριαρχεί στην υμνολογία αυτής της Κυριακής, παρουσιάζεται όχι μέσα στα πλαίσια του πόνου, αλλά της νίκης και της χαράς. Βρισκόμαστε στη μέση της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής. Από τη μια πλευρά η φυσική και πνευματική προσπάθεια, αν είναι συστηματική και συνεχής, αρχίζει να μας γίνεται αισθητή, το φόρτωμα να γίνεται πιο βαρύ, η κόπωση πιο φανερή. Έχουμε ανάγκη από βοήθεια και ενθάρρυνση. Από την άλλη πλευρά, αφού αντέξουμε αυτή τη κόπωση και έχουμε αναρριχηθεί στο βουνό μεχρι αυτό το σημείο, αρχίζουμε να βλέπουμε το τέλος της πορείας μας και η ακτινοβολία του Πάσχα γίνεται πιο έντονη. Η Σαρακοστή είναι η σταύρωση του εαυτού μας, είναι η εμπειρία - περιορισμένη βέβαια - που αποκομίζουμε από την εντολή του Χριστού που ακούγεται στο ευαγγελικό ανάγνωσμα αυτής της Κυριακής: << όποιος θέλει να με ακολουθεί, ας απαρνηθεί τον εαυτό του ας σηκώσει το σταυρό του, και έτσι ας με ακολουθεί>> (Μαρκ.8,34). Αλλά δεν μπορούμε να σηκώσουμε το σταυρό μας και ν' ακολουθήσουμε το Χριστό αν δεν ατενίζουμε το Σταυρό που Εκείνος σήκωσε για να μας σώσει. Ο δικός Του Σταυρός είναι εκείνος που δίνει νόημα αλλά και δύναμη στους άλλους. Αυτό μας εξηγεί το συναξάρι της Κυριακής: Στη διάρκεια της νηστείας των σαράντα ημερών, κατά κάποιο τρόπο, και μείς σταυρωνόμαστε, νεκρωνόμαστε από τα πάθη, έχουμε την πίκρα της ακηδίας και της πτώσης, γι' αυτό υψώνεται ο τίμιος και ζωοποιός Σταυρός, για αναψυχή και υποστήριξή μας. Μας θυμίζει τα πάθη του Κυρίου και μας παρηγορεί.. Είμαστε σαν τους οδοιπόρους σε δύσκολο και μακρινό δρόμο που, κατάκοποι, κάθονται για λίγο να αναπαυθούν. Με το ζωοποιό Σταυρό γλυκαίνει την πίκρα που νοιώθουμε από τη νηστεία, μας ενισχύει στη πορεία μας στην έρημο έως ότου φθάσουμε στην πνευματική Ιερουσαλήμ με την ανάστασή Του.. Επειδή ο Σταυρός λέγεται Ξύλο Ζωής και είναι εκείνο το ξύλο που φυτεύθηκε στον Παράδεισο, γι' αυτό και οι θείοι Πατέρες τοποθέτησαν τούτο στο μέσο της Σαρακοστής, για να μας θυμίζει του Αδάμ την ευδαιμονία και την πτώση του από αυτή, να μας θυμίζει ακόμα ότι με τη συμμετοχή μας στο παρόν Ξύλο δεν πεθαίνουμε πια αλλά ζωογονούμαστε>>.

6 Sunday of the Veneration of the Holy Cross The commemoration and ceremonies of the Third Sunday of Lent are closely parallel to the feasts of the Veneration of the Cross (September 14) and the Procession of the Cross (August 1). Not only does the Sunday of the Holy Cross prepare us for commemoration of the Crucifixion, but it also reminds us that the whole of Lent is a period when we are crucified with Christ. As we have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24), and will have mortified ourselves during these forty days of the Fast, the precious and life-giving Cross is now placed before us to refresh our souls and encourage us who may be filled with a sense of bitterness, resentment, and depression. The Cross reminds us of the Passion of our Lord, and by presenting to us His example, it encourages us to follow Him in struggle and sacrifice, being refreshed, assured, and comforted. In other words, we must experience what the Lord experienced during His Passion - being humiliated in a shameful manner. The Cross teaches us that through pain and suffering we shall see the fulfillment of our hopes: the heavenly inheritance and eternal glory. As they who walk on a long and hard way and are bowed down by fatigue find great relief and strengthening under the cool shade of a leafy tree, so do we find comfort, refreshment, and rejuvenation under the Life-giving Cross, which our Fathers planted on this Sunday. Thus, we are fortified and enabled to continue our Lenten journey with a light step, rested and encouraged. Or, as before the arrival of the king, his royal standards, trophies, and emblems of victory come in procession and then the king himself appears in a triumphant parade, jubilant and rejoicing in his victory and filling those under him with joy, so does the Feast of the Cross precede the coming of our King, Jesus Christ. It warns us that He is about to proclaim His victory over death and appear to us in the glory of the Resurrection. His Life-Giving Cross is His royal scepter, and by venerating it we are filled with joy, rendering Him glory. Therefore, we become ready to welcome our King, who shall manifestly triumph over the powers of darkness. The present feast has been placed in the middle of Great Lent for another reason. The Fast can be likened to the spring of Marah whose waters the children of Israel encountered in the wilderness. This water was undrinkable due to its bitterness but became sweet when the Holy Prophet Moses dipped the wood into its depth. Likewise, the wood of the Cross sweetens the days of the Fast, which are bitter and often grievous because of our tears. Yet Christ comforts us during our course through the desert of the Fast, guiding and leading us by His hand to the spiritual Jerusalem on high by the power of His Resurrection. Moreover, as the Holy Cross is called the Tree of Life, it is placed in the middle of the Fast, as the ancient tree of life was placed in the middle of the garden of Eden. By this, our Holy Fathers wished to remind us of Adam s gluttony as well as the fact that through this Tree has condemnation been abolished. Therefore, if we bind ourselves to the Holy Cross, we shall never encounter death but shall inherit life eternal -
