1 The Feast of the Nativity of Christ, December 25 The Nativity according to the flesh of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ Ἡ κατὰ σάρκα Γέννησις τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτήρος ἡµῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ December 25 The Feast of the Nativity of Christ reminds us that we are born of God, that we are sons of God (1 John 3:1), that we have been saved from sin (Matthew 1:21), and that we must live for God and not for sin. We must therefore not live for flesh and blood, not for the world which lies in evil (1 John 5:19). What does the incarnation of the Son of God require of us? It requires of us to remember and hold in sacred honor the fact that we are born of God. Therefore, if we have sullied and trampled upon this birthright with our sins, we must restore it by washing it with tears of repentance. When we fall the image of God within us becomes tarnished, and must be renewed. Moreover, our union with God, with blessedness, with truth, and with holiness must be restored. And we do this through repentance (which means re-thinking ) and through the Mystery of Holy Confession. Saint John of Kronstadt Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to men. (Luke 2:13-14) This Christmas night bestowed peace on the whole world; let no one threaten. This is the night of the most-humble One; let no one be proud. Now is the day of joy; let us not revenge. Now is the day of good will; let us not be mean. This is the day of peace; let us not be conquered by anger. Today the Bountiful One became impoverished for our sake; thus let the rich man invite the poor one to his table. Today we received a gift which we did not ask for; let us therefore give alms to those who implore us and who beg from us. This present day cast open the heavenly door to our prayers; let us then open our door to those who ask our forgiveness. Now the Divine Being took upon Himself the seal of humanity; He did so for humanity to be decorated by the seal of Divinity. 1

Come, let us greatly rejoice in the Lord as we tell of this present mystery. For the express Image of the Father, the imprint of His eternity, takes the form of a servant, and without undergoing change He comes forth from a Mother who knew not wedlock. For what He was, He has remained, true God; and what He was not, He has taken upon Himself, becoming man through love for mankind. Unto Him let us cry aloud: God born of a Virgin, have mercy on us. 4 Your Kingdom, O Christ God, is a Kingdom of all the ages, and Your rule is from generation to generation. Made flesh of the Holy Spirit and made man of the ever-virgin Mary, You have enlightened us by Your coming. Light of Light, Brightness of the Father, You have made the whole creation shine with joy. All that has breath praises You, the Image of the glory of the Father. O God Who are, and Who has ever been, Who has shone forth from a Virgin, have mercy on us. Stichos 6 For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages. What shall we offer You, O Christ, Who for our sake has appeared on earth as man? Every creature made by You offers You thanks. The angels offer You a hymn; the heavens, a star; the Magi, gifts; the shepherds, their wonder; the earth, its cave; the wilderness, the manger; and we offer You a Virgin Mother. O preeternal God, have mercy on us. Idiomelon Tone 2 Kassia Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. When Augustus reigned alone upon earth, the many kingdoms of men came to an end; and when You were made man of the pure Virgin, the many gods of idolatry were destroyed. The cities of the world passed under one single rule; and the nations came to believe in one sovereign Godhead. The peoples were enrolled by the decree of Caesar; and we, the faithful, were enrolled in the Name of the Godhead, when You, our God, were made man. Great is Your mercy, glory to You. Πρόσχωµεν. In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth. The earth was invisible and unfinished; and darkness was over the deep. The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the water. Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. God saw the light; it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day; the darkness He called Night; and there was evening and morning, one day. Then God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water, and let it divide the water from the water ; and it was so. Thus God made the firmament, and God divided the water under the firmament from the water above the firmament. So God called the firmament Heaven, and God saw that it was good; and there was evening and morning, the second day. The fruit tree bore fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind on earth. God saw that it was good. So evening and morning were the third day. 9 I tempt the Lord! Then Isaiah said, Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary the Lord also? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel. Butter and honey He shall eat, before He knows to prefer evil or choose the good, for before the Child knows good or evil, He refuses the evil to choose the good; and the land you fear because of the presence of the two kings will be abandoned. Moreover the Lord said to me, Take for yourself a large new book, and write on it with a man s pen concerning making a swift plunder of spoils, for it is near at hand. Then make witnesses for Me of faithful men: Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Berechiah. Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son, and the Lord said to me, Call his name Quickly Despoil, Swiftly Plunder; for before the child shall know how to call for his father and mother, one shall take the power of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria in the presence of the king of Assyria. God is with us. Know this, O Gentiles, and be defeated. Give ear, all you to the very ends of the earth. Be defeated although you are strong, for even if you should be strong again, you will be defeated again. Then too, whatever counsel you take, the Lord will scatter it abroad; and whatever word you shall speak, it will continue among you, for God is with us. Epistle Deacon Wisdom. Διάκ. BRETHREN, God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say: You are My Son, today I have begotten You? And again: I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son? But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: Let all the angels of God worship Him. And of the angels He says: Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire. But to the Son He says: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions. And: You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You remain; and they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail. But to which of the angels has He ever said: Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold,a an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men! So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them. 13 Aposticha Idiomela Stichera Tone 1 by Germanos A great and marvelous wonder has come to pass this day! A Virgin bears Child, and her womb suffers no corruption; the Word is made flesh, yet does not cease to dwell with the Father. Angels and shepherds give glory, and we cry aloud with them: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace. Tone 3 by Germanos The Lord said unto my Lord: Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies the footstool of Your feet. Today the Virgin gives birth to the Maker of all. Eden offers a cave and a star discloses Christ, the Sun, to those in darkness. Magi, enlightened by faith, worship with gifts; shepherds behold the wonder, and angels sing praises, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Tone 3 by Anatolios From the womb before Lucifer have I begotten You; the Lord has sworn and will not repent. When the Lord Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judah, Magi coming from east worshipped God made man; and eagerly opening their treasures, they offered Him precious gifts: refined gold, for the King of the ages; frankincense, for the God of all; and myrrh, for the Immortal One as to one three days dead. 14 Make glad, O Jerusalem, and keep the festival all you who love Sion. Today the ancient bond of the condemnation of Adam is loosed. Paradise is opened to us, and the serpent is laid low. Of old he deceived the woman in Paradise, but now he sees woman become the Mother of the Creator. O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! The sinful vessel that brought death upon all flesh has through the Theotokos become the first fruits of salvation for the whole world. For the all-perfect God is born as a baby of her, and by His birth He sets the seal upon her virginity. Through His swaddling clothes He looses the bonds of sin, and through becoming a child He heals the pangs of Eve in travail. Kontakion of the Feast Read (Tone 3) By Romanos the Melodist The Virgin today gives birth to the One Who surpasses all essences, and the earth offers a cave to the unapproachable One. Angels with the shepherds glorify Him; and the Magi, travel with the star; for us is born a new Child, the God Who existed before the ages. Oikos of the Feast Read (Tone 3) By Romanos the Melodist Bethlehem has opened Eden; come, and let us see. We have found joy in secret; come, and let us take possession of the paradise that is within the cave. There the unwatered Root has appeared, from which forgiveness flowers forth. There is found the undug well, from which David of old longed to drink. There the Virgin has borne a Babe, and made the thirst of Adam and David to cease straightaway. Therefore, let us hasten to this place where now is born a young Child, the God Who existed before the ages. Strange and wonderful mystery: the cave has become as heaven, the Virgin is like the Cherubim, the manger a place wherein lies Christ God Whom nothing can contain; As we praise Him, let us also magnify Him. Magnify O my soul, God born in the flesh, from the Virgin. The Magi, beholding the strange course of an unknown and newly-shining star that exceeded the brightness of all heavenly light, learned thereby that Christ the King was born on earth inn Bethlehem for our salvation. 24 Magnify O my soul, God Who was worshipped by the Magi. Herod inquired what time the guiding star appeared, which brought the Magi to Bethlehem, there to worship Christ with gifts. Led back to their own land by that same star, they returned not to Herod, but mocked the wicked slayer of children. Others from the Iambic Kanon Today the Virgin, bears the Master within the cave. Easier for us is from fear to love silence, free of any peril as it is, O Virgin; whereas to weave stirring hymns of longing in earnest, is difficult. Therefore, O Mother, give us strength to match our desire, we pray. Today the Master is born as a baby of a Virgin Mother. Therefore, O Mother, give us strength to match our desire, we pray. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Magnify O my soul, the power of the undivided Godhead, in three Persons. Type of the Word, pure Mother, we have seen That have no light and shadows that are past; Newly he has appeared from the closed gate, And we, found worthy of the light of truth, Your womb, as is most fitting, now we bless. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Magnify O my soul, her that delivered us, from the curse. The people that delights in Christ has found Its longing, counted worthy of God s coming, Now cries in supplication for rebirth As giving life; do you, pure Virgin, grant The grace to worship then that radiant glory. First Katavasia Magnify O my soul, the one who is more honorable and more glorious than the host above. 24 Μεγάλυνον ψυχή µου, τῶν ὑπὸ τῶν Μάγων, Θεὸν προσκυνηθέντα. Ἀπόστολος Τῆς Ἑορτῆς Γαλ. δ 4-7 Εὐαγγέλιον Of the Feast Matthew 2:1-20 Τῆς Ἑορτῆς Ματθ. β 1-20 If the Feast falls on Tuesday through Saturday, the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. At: Remembering our most-holy... Magnify O my soul, she who is more honorable and more glorious than the host on high. Strange and wonderful mystery: the cave has become as heaven, the Virgin is like the Cherubim, the manger a place wherein lies Christ God Whom nothing can contain; As we praise Him, let us also magnify Him. At: Remembering our most-holy... In you rejoices, O full of grace, all creation, the hierarchy of Angels, and the race of mankind; sanctified temple and intellectual paradise, the boast of virgins, from whom God was incarnate, and became a Child, Who was the pre-eternal God. For He made your womb His throne, and shaped your womb to be more spacious than the heavens. In you rejoices, O full of grace, all creation: glory to you. Communion Hymn If the Feast falls on Sunday or Monday, the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great. Εἰς τό Ἐξαιρέτως: Μεγάλυνον ψυχή µου, τὴν τιµιωτέραν, καὶ ἐνδοξοτέραν τῶν ἄνω στρατευµάτων.
