Tsocanos Paul Venizelos Tonia Yiangou Dear Parishioners, Christmas is approaching and Christians all the world will be preparing themselves for the celebration of the «great and paradoxical mystery», which is the incarnation of the Only-begotten Son of God for our salvation and for the reconciliation of man with his Creator. Christmas remains a mystery for those who live outside the Church and beyond the Christian Faith. For this reason, in the service on the Sunday before the Feast of Christmas the Church reads the Epistle to the Hebrews, written by the great missionary and Apostle, St. Paul. In both the chapter and throughout the Epistle, he reminds the Jewish people about their forefathers; More particularly about Abraham and all the Patriarchs, who by faith and in obedience to God, had accomplished great miracles and victories over those who were against them. Having faith in the promises and the authority of God, they lived like strangers in this world, because they believed that God would never fail in his words and his promise. Abraham and all his descendants in faith «For he looked forward to the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God» [Hebrews 11:10]. Then he goes on to praise all those people who were not saints. They had many shortcomings and weaknesses; Nevertheless, they had a sound and healthy faith in God. And so, they never questioned the truthfulness of his promise not were they troubled by them, as the psalmist points out, «that you may be justified in your words and win when you are judged». [Psalm 50:4]. Therefore they remained steadfast and continued to entrust themselves and their life and deeds, in the hope that Almighty God, would support them and not forget them. Many of them did things, which were otherwise impossible for the human mind. As St. Paul says, admiring what they did in their life: «And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions». [Hebrews 11:32-33].

Not only did they perform great deed and actions in this earthly life, but they also Endured many human afflictions and sufferings imposed on them by those who where against God, and who wanted to impose their sinful will on them. For this reason, they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted and they were slain with the sword. They suffered unbelievable hardship and oppression, and the «world was not worthy» of such sacrifices. Nevertheless, with patience and deep faith and valor they endured them, because they had faith in Him, who made them true promises. Promises that He is strong, that He is holy and that He is trustworthy. Yet they died with the promises unfulfilled in their time. This promise was the coming of Christ. He was the fulfillment of the promises; He was the leader of peace and justice. Therefore, we the contemporary faithful celebrate this great, unique event once again. That is to say, we celebrate the realization of the promises of God. He sent his Onlybegotten and beloved son, in the form and image of a man, to bring the Good News, to create a new heaven and a new earth, to bridge the spiritual gap between man and God, and between men of God who are ready to place themselves under the light yoke of our Lord Jesus Christ, «who for our sake and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man» to save us and lead us to the Kingdom of God. Bearing all this in mind, let us give glory to the Triune God for His mercy and let us renew our trust to Him, who not only humbled himself, but made us communicants of «the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now made manifest to his saints». [Col. 1:26]. At this festive time we celebrate this wonderful and great mystery, in the expectation that Christ will never abandon us, will never allow evil to prevail, will never forget us, but that he will always be with us, to bless us, to grant us peace and all the spiritual and material means that we may become like the holy men and women of the Old Testament, faithful to His promises. To Him belong all glory and honor, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen. With love in Christ, Father Anargyros

Με αγάπη Χριστού, Π. 4 THE DIVINE LITURGY - PART 4 PRAYING THE BIBLE IN THE LITURGY Orthodox Christians are not merely to read the Bible; we are also to pray the Bible. This takes place most clearly and completely in the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom on a Sunday to Sunday basis. Yes, there are two readings from the New Testament during the Liturgy an Epistle reading from one of the Letters of the apostles Paul, Peter, James and John or other apostolic writings; and a Gospel reading from one of the four evangelists but we pray the Lord s Prayer and also sing verses from the Book of Psalms. In the priest s blessing, The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all, we hear St. Paul s final farewell to the Church in Corinth (2 Corinthians 13:13); and in the choir s singing of Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of Your glory, we hear the song of the angelic cherubim first heard by the Old Testament prophet Isaiah in the Temple in Jerusalem (Isaiah 6:1-5). The prayers of the Liturgy are full of biblical imagery and shot through with hundreds of Biblical quotes. In fact, the late Orthodox theologian, Paul Evdokimov ( ), once calculated that there are 98 quotations from the Old Testament and 114 quotations from the New Testament woven into prayers of the Liturgy. The language of the Liturgy is the language of the Bible! To come to Liturgy attentively is to learn to pray the Bible! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. But more than this: the priesthood, the vestments, the altar, the tabernacle, the oil lamps, the incense, and so much else of the Church s structures for worship are taken directly from the Old Testament, particularly from the books of Exodus, Leviticus and the Psalms and, as the New Testament Letter to the Hebrews teaches, all of these ancient elements of worship in the Temple and the synagogue which we still use to this day in the Liturgy, have now been brought to fulfillment in the life and teaching, crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, always pointing to Him. THE GREAT ENTRANCE Following the censing of the interior of the Church by the celebrating clergy, the Great Entrance is the solemn procession during which the gifts of bread and wine are carried by the clergy from the special side altar (called the Prothesis) where the gifts have been prepared before the beginning of Liturgy to the main altar of the Church. WHY DO WE USE INCENSE IN OUR WORSHIP? BECAUSE IT S BIBLICAL! Incense has always been intimately connected with worship in the Bible. Both in the Tabernacle during their wandering in the desert for 40 years, the offering of incense represents the prayers of the saints ascending before Him (Revelation 5:8; 8:4).

And later in the Temple in Jerusalem, God commanded the people of Israel to offer incense in the morning and in the evening as part of their daily worship of Him (Exodus 30:7-8; Psalm 141:2); and in Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament, it is prophesied that there will come a time when incense will be offered to the Name of the Lord even among the Gentiles (Malachi 1:11). And in the very last book of the Bible, the Apostle John describes the use of incense as an integral part of the worship of God in His heavenly Kingdom, and that the offering of incense represents the prayers of the saints ascending before Him (Revelation 5:8: 8:4). WHERE DOES THE WORD ALLELUIA COME FROM AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN? One of several ancient Hebrew words found in the Liturgy, Alleluia literally means Praise God and in the Scriptures is found primarily in the Old Testament Book of Psalms, where it is used 24 times in Psalms 104, and It is also found four times in chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation where it is the word of praise and worship used by all creation for the wedding of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7). Meant to be a joyful word of thanksgiving and praise, it is sung throughout the Liturgy: with verses from the Psalms after the Epistle reading; just before the Gospel is read; at the end of the Cherubic Hymn during the Great Entrance; and as part of the normal Sunday Communion hymn taken from Psalm 148:1. In our Church Alleluia is also sung during Lent and Holy Week as well as at funerals and memorial services. ANGELS IN THE BIBLE AND THE LITURGY For an angel of peace One of the things we pray for at every Liturgy is for an angel to guard us and guide us. Each of us has been given a guardian angel. It is about our guardian angels that the Lord Jesus spoke when He admonished His disciples not to look down on children, for I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my father in heaven (Matthew 18:10-11). And during Baptism, the celebrating priest prays specifically that an angel of light be assigned to the child being baptized. The Liturgy speaks over and over again about the reality of angels and archangels, the cherubim and the seraphim. The Scriptures witness to the reality of angels from beginning to end, from Genesis to the Book of Revelation. What are angels? The word angel is a Greek word that means messenger. Angels are purely spiritual beings that often serve as God s messengers during critical times in human history. In the Old Testament, the Archangel Michael appears to the prophet Daniel (10:13) and is mentioned again in Jude 9 and the Book of Revelation (12:7). In the New Testament, the Archangel Gabriel appears to both Zechariah to announce the birth of his son, John the Baptist (Luke 1:10-20); and to Mary the Theotokos to announce the birth of her son, our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 1:26-37). An angel comforts the Lord Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane shortly before His crucifixion (Luke 22:43); and angels announce His resurrection to the women who come to His tomb and find it empty (Luke 24:4-7). At the Second Coming, the Gospel of Matthew (25:31) tells us that the Lord will be escorted by all the angels.

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS The sign of the Cross is one of Christianity s most ancient customs. It is a sign of blessing and commitment to the Crucified Lord. A simple custom, it is a statement of Christian faith which incorporates the entire body. Like many ancient customs, it has been done in a variety of ways over the centuries. Current Orthodox Christian practice, used by all since the 17 th century, involves combining the thumb, pointer and middle finger while placing the ring finger and the pinky against the palm. The unity of the three fingers represents the unity of the undivided Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three persons but one God. The two fingers pressed against the palm represents the two natures of Christ: human and divine. It indicates our belief in Jesus, who is both fully God and fully human. Our motion, of course, recalls the cross: forehead, stomach, right shoulder and left shoulder, but also the God who is Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As one moves through the sign, one recites, at the forehead, In the name of the Father ; at the navel, and of the Son ; and across the shoulders, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. It is as if to say I love you Lord with all of my mind (forehead), with all my soul (navel), with all my strength (right shoulder) and with all my heart (left shoulder). Done at various time as a sign of reverence, it is traditionally made before kissing an icon or the Gospel book; and during the Liturgy, whenever the Holy Trinity or the Virgin Mary is mentioned; before and after the Gospel is read; when lighting candles and during the Greed. In short, few actions are so simple and yet symbolize so much of our Christian life. FOR A CHRISTIAN END TO OUR LIVES This is a petition prayed at every Liturgy. The Liturgy confronts us with the fact that death is something that awaits all of us. As Orthodox Christians, we understand earthly death to be an encounter with the Risen Christ and the door to what the Lord Jesus calls eternal life (John 3:16). For believers, death is not the end but a new beginning. Because of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus from the dead, Christians as St. Paul wrote know that to die is gain (Philippians 1:22) and do not grieve as others do who have no hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Indeed, here we have no lasting city but are looking for the city that is to come (Hebrews 13:14).

PASTORAL GUIDELINES CHURCH POSITIONS REGARDING THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE Rev. Dr. Stanley S. Harakas Archbishop Iakovos Professor of Theology, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology The Sanctity of Human Life A major and overarching concern of the Church arises with its commitment to the Godgiven sancity of human life. Some of the developments of the biological manioulation of human life, though promising amazing therapeutic achievements, may also be undertood as underming respect for the integry of human existence. Others may be seen as providing new means of healing human illness. Discerning the difference is the challenge the Ψhurch faces in developing its teaching on these newly appearing issues. Human Life The Church s teaching about human life is based on Holy Tradition, including the Scriptures as a primary resource and the ongoing teaching and interpretation of the Orthodox Faith. Life is a gift of God in the formation of the created world. All life is precious, but human life is uniquely created by God in the image and likeness of God. Human life as such deserves deep respect and individual human beings are to be treated in accordance with their inherent human dignity. Thus, racism, unjust prejudicial treatment of men and women, genocide, forms of sexual exploitation, domestic violence, child abuse, rape, theft or destruction of private property, deceptions and deceit, environmental plunder and other such unethical behaviors violate the human dignity of others. Human life as a gift of God should be respected. Some specific issues are the following: Donation of Organs Although nothing in the Orthodox tradition requires the faithful to donate their organs to others, nevertheless, this practice may be considered an act of love, and as such is encouraged. The decision to donate a duplicate organ, such as a kidney, while the donor is living, requires much consideration and should be made in consultation with medical professionals and one s Spiritual Father. The donation of an organ from a deceased person is also an act of love that offers the recip-ient a longer, fuller life. Such donations are acceptable if the deceased donor had willed such action, or if surviving relatives permit it providing that it was in harmony with the desires of the deceased. Such actions can be approved as an expression of love and the self-determination of the donor. In all cases, respect for the body of the donor should be maintained. Organ transplants should never be commercialized nor coerced nor take place without proper consent, nor place in jeopardy the identity of the donor or recipient, through, for example, the use of animal organs. The death of the donor should never be hastened in order to harvest organs for transplantation to another person. Cremation Because the Orthodox Faith affirms the fundamental goodness of creation, it understands the body to be an integral part of the human person and the temple of the Holy Spirit, and expects the resurrection of the dead. The Church considers cremation to be the deliberate desecration and destruction of what God has made and ordained for us. The Church instead insists that the body be buried so that the natural physical process of decomposition may take place. The Church does not grant funerals, either in the sanctuary, or at the funeral home, or at any other place, to persons who have chosen to be cremated. Additionally, memorial services with kolyva (boiled wheat) are not allowed in such instances, inasmuch as the similarity between the kernel of wheat and the body has been intentionally destroyed.

Medical Developments and the Church With high frequency, new developments in the area of the life sciences appear in our technologically advanced culture. The Church welcomes efforts and innovations that contribute to the healing of human diseases. Yet, many of these advances raise moral questions. Some of the Church s responses to these developments are based on older issues for which the Church has clear and unambiguous guidelines. Other responses are not so evident. Thus, many of these developments pose challenges to Orthodox Christian spiritual concerns and moral values. In numerous cases, the Church is still in the process of clarifying its response. The following serve to indicate the general positions and direction of thought in the Orthodox Church: Sexuality The Orthodox Church recognizes marriage as the only moral and spiritually appropriate context for sexual relations. Thus, all other forms of sexual activity such as fornication, adultery, homosexuality, lesbianism, pornography, all forms of prostitution, and similar forms of behavior are sins and as such are inappropriate for the Orthodox Christian. Marriage is only conducted and recognized in the Orthodox Church as taking place between a man and a woman. Same-sex marriages are a contradiction in terms. The Orthodox Church does not allow for same-sex marriages. Abortion The Church from the very beginning of existence has sought to protect the life in the womb and has considered abortion as a form of murder in its theology and canons. Orthodox Christians are admonished not to encourage women to have abortions, nor to assist in the committing of abortion. Those who perform abortions and those who seek them are committing an immoral deed, and are called to repentance. Suicide Suicide, the taking of one s own life, is self-murder and as such, a sin. More importantly, it may be evidence of a lack of faith in our loving, forgiving, sustaining God. If a person has committed suicide as a result of a belief that such an action is rationally or ethically defensible, the Orthodox Church denies that person a Church funeral, because such beliefs and actions separate a person from the community of faith. The Church shows compassion, however, on those who have taken their own life as a result of mental illness or severe emotional stress, when a condition of impaired rationality can be verified by a physician. Autopsy When a person dies for reasons that are uncertain, a qualified medical examiner may, with the permission of the next of kin, perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. In some states, this is required by law. In all cases, however, the Orthodox Church expects that the body of the deceased be treated with respect and dignity. HOLY COMMUNION - (For Clarification) According to the Canon Law of our Orthodox Church, an Orthodox Christian must be in good Standing with his faith in order to receive Holy Communion. Therefore the Sacrament is not to be received by: A. Non-Orthodox Individuals B. Orthodox Christians not in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate C. Orthodox Christians who have not fasted or gone to confession D. Married Orthodox Christians, who have not had an Orthodox Ecclesiastical Wedding. E. Divorced Orthodox Christians who have not yet obtained an Orthodox Ecclesiastical Divorce

December 6 th - Feast Day of Saint Nicholas (4 th century) December 12 th - Feast Day of St. Spyridon (4 th century) Two of the most beloved Bishops and Saints of our Church are St. Nicholas and St. Spyridon. They both lived during the fourth century and were very good friends who together defended the Orthodox Christian Faith against those who attempted to change the teachings of the Church. St. Nicholas If any person attempts to tell you that there is no Santa Claus, you can prove to them that they are wrong. There was and there is truly a Santa Claus. He lived in a small town called Myra in Asia Minor, which is now the country of Turkey. He became a priest at an early age and soon commanded the respect and admiration of all the citizens of Myra. He was elevated to Bishop very quickly and served for many years as Archbishop of the province. His fame as a lover of children was well known. He also defended the unfortunate and assisted the poor. It was St. Nicholas who brought the spirit of good will and Christmas to the world. He loved to give presents to poor children and underprivileged families. The name Santa Claus is the northern European name for Saint Nicholas. St. Nicholas attended the First Ecumenical Council in the year 325 A.D. in Asia Minor and helped to defend the True Faith of Jesus Christ. He was tortured by the enemies of Christianity and spent many years in prison. He bore the terrible scars of torture on his body for many years after his release from prison. Santa Claus will continue to exist so long as there are people who love one another and who are willing to share in the many wonderful gifts which Almighty God has given to us. St. Nicholas is the Patron Saint of children everywhere. He is also considered the Patron Saint of travelers. St. Spyridon St. Spyridon was called the Shepherd Bishop. He lived during the 4 th century on the beautiful island of Cyprus. As a young boy, he tended sheep on the island of his father. He was ordained a priest but continued to tend his sheep which he loved very much. When he was elevated to the position of Bishop of his province, he still kept the little farm of his parents and worked diligently tending his sheep. St. Spyridon had no formal education. Yet, he had memorized the entire Bible by listening to it being read in Church and in his home. In the year 325 A.D. he was called by St. Constantine to help defend the Orthodox Faith at the 1 st Ecumenical Council which was held in the city of Nicaea, Asia Minor. It was there that he began a lasting friendship with St. Nicholas of Myra. St. Spyridon too, like St. Nicholas, had been persecuted by the Roman pagans. After being beaten by Roman soldiers he lost his right eye and was to work in the mines for many years. Although he died almost 1600 years ago, his body is still well preserved on the island of Kerkyra (off the West Coast of Greece). Thousands of pilgrims venerate his holy remains on the Church of St. Spyridon on the island, and each year on December 12, the clergy carry his holy body through the streets of the city. The hand of God has preserved his sacred body for all to venerate each year.

THE SACRED MEMORIAL SERVICES Besides the prayers which are raised up to God during divine worship on behalf of the dead, our holy Church has also ordained that Memorial services be offered on certain days. The origin of the Memorials is found in the Sacred Scripture. From the Old Testament we are informed that the Israelites prayed to God to forgive the sins of their fathers who had died. From the New Testament we learn that St. Paul prays that our Lord Jesus Christ may grant that the faithful Onesiphoros, who was already dead, find mercy from the Lord and the Father on the day of the Second Coming (II Tim. 1,18). This is why we find Memorials already from the first centuries of the Church s life. And this is so for we are all - both living and dead - the body of Christ and individually members of it (I Cor. 12,27). The fact that both the living (the militant Church of Christ) and the dead (the triumphant Church) constitute the one, indivisible and united Church of Christ is symbolized beautifully on the sacred Paten (Diskarion) in the Proskomide. At the center of the sacred Paten the Lamb is placed; to its right is the portion of the Theotokos; to its left are the portions for the Angelic orders and all the Saints; at the bottom are the portions for the living and the dead. Thus, there on the Paten the whole Christ and the whole Catholic Church (= the Orthodox) both the heavenly and the earthly is symbolically present. Because of this bond which exists between us the living and those who have fallen asleep, and because of the love for them, especially toward our relatives - parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, children- we have an obligation to offer Memorials for their souls. The Apostolic Constitutions recommend that Memorials for the dead be served with psalms and readings and prayers on the third day after the death of our beloved one, on account of the Lord Jesus who rose after three days. They also prescribe Memorials on the ninth day as a reminder of the living and of the dead, as well as on the fortieth day after death according to ancient practice. This is how the people of Israel mourned for the great Moses. In addition to these we must have annual memorials in remembrance of the deceased. The Memorials on the third day, done in commemoration of the Lord s three-day Resurrection, are also recommended by St. Isidoros of Pelusium. This God- bearing Father, clarifying how the three days and three nights are recorded, during which the Savior remained in the grave, also adds: IN a similar manner we, too, have the custom of serving Memorials for the dead on the third day after their repose. St. Symeon of Thessaloniki sees another symbolism in the three day and nine day Memorials. The three-day Memorials we do for the Holy Trinity, because from the Holy Trinity we have our existence and our life, and all things of life and salvation are offered to us. The nine-day Memorials, he continues, remind us for the nine Orders of holy Angels, among which our beloved one has been numbered as an immaterial spirit. The fortieth-day Memorials are for the Ascension of the Savior which took place forty days after His third day Resurrection. Finally, the three-month, the six-month and nine-month Memorials symbolize the Holy Trinity, the God of all and are served unto the glory of the Triune God on behalf of the deceased. Because the deceased was created by the Holy Trinity, to the Trinity he is going now that he has been separated from the body, and from the Trinity again he hopes to receive the resurrection of his body. St. Gregory the Theologian refers to the annual Memorials in his Funeral Oration on the death of his brother Caesarios. He says: One aspect of the obligations we had to offer we have already done for you; we also promise you the remainder - the annual honorary offerings and Memorials. St. Symeon of Thessaloniki, referring to the annual Memorials, observes the following: This indicates the perfection of that state, and that he who has died lives and is immortal in the soul. A time will come when he will again be raised up as the Creator so chooses and when He will also raise the body.

In addition to the aforementioned regular Memorials, our holy Church has ordained that the Sabbath (Saturday) be a day of commemoration of the holy Martyrs and of all the deceased. Our Mother Church has also ordained common Memorials twice a year: on the Saturday before Meatfare Sunday and on the Saturday before the great feast of Holy Pentecost. Also it became a custom to have memorial prayers on the Saturday before Cheesefare Sunday and the Saturday of the First Week of Lent, when the Church remembers mainly the miracle of the kollyva (boiled wheat) with the holy great martyr Theodore of Tyron. At the Sacred Memorials, as we know, Kollyva (boiled wheat) is offered, a practice which can be traced to the middle of the fourth century. The Kollyva conceal a profound and most didactic symbolism. They symbolize the resurrection from the dead of the bodies. They remind us that man, too, is a seed that is at death buried in the earth as is the seed of wheat. This seed will be resurrected again by the power of God. For this reason, as St. Symeon of Thessaloniki observes, in the Kollyva we add various other seeds (raisins, walnuts, almonds, sesame, etc). But the basic element is always wheat because the Savior himself likened His All-holy Body and His Resurrection to wheat, saying: Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit (John 12,24). In like manner, if I die as God the Father has ordained, I will harvest the salvation of the human race. It is important to remember that the following are brought to the Sanctuary as an offering of the Memorial and for the repose of the departed: (prosphoron) offering bread, from which the body of Christ will be taken, sacramental wine, oil, and incense. This is, therefore, the conclusion: The commemoration of the names of the departed by the priest during the Holy Eucharist, and in general, during the sacred Memorials are necessary for the souls of all our deceased brothers and sisters. And as St. John of Damascus says, May God forbid that any of these names be not glorified or omitted. With our prayers during the Divine Liturgy and the sacred Memorials we confirm that all of us, living and dead, belong to one spiritual body, the Church. With all the faithful we beseech Christ, the Lord of life and death, to provide His mercy for our brothers beyond the grave according to His goodness, compassion and grace. But also the fact that many others pray with us for our relatives gives us not little consolation. Moreover, with the prayers and the sacred Memorials for the departed we are reminded of the vanity of worldly things, of the shortness of the present life, of death and of eternity. And in any case the prayer for the departed is beneficial, even though it does not bring about all that it requests. The most significant thing is that through all of these efforts we the living are always benefited, since we offer Christ sacrificed for our own sins, propitiating the loving God both for them and for ourselves. St. John of Damascus says that each person who prays and tires and struggles for the salvation of another benefits himself first and then his neighbor. For God is not unjust as to overlook our work and the love which we showed for His sake in serving the saints (our Christian brothers) (Heb. 6,10)

PARISH COUNCIL The 4th Annual St. Athanasios Golf Outing, hosted by the Parish Council Paramus Golf & Country Club on Monday, Oct 15th, 2018 The Golf Outing had 93 Golfers playing on a day where morning rain threatened play, however when it was time to golf the rain stopped and weather improved. The buzz and excitement were definitely apparent as golfers arrived and registered. Golfers received welcome bags with custom St. Athanasios Charity Golf Classic hats & shirts, as well as a hearty brunch inside the clubhouse. Before embarking on the links to play in the tournament there were welcoming remarks by Golf Outing Chairman, Jason Fink and a prayer by Fr. Anargyros. Next a raffle to win a King Cobra F8 Driver and a golf foursome to Crystal Springs Golf Resort & Spa took place Once the Golfers finished their day of fun and friendship on the course, it was off to St. Athanasios Community Center for the Awards Dinner & Mega Tricky Tray. The room was filled with over 200 people. There were 55 luxury prizes all valued at least $200 with the majority being valued at much more. The tricky tray and dinner welcomed golfers, families and friends. During the cocktail hour, the guests enjoyed open bar & Hors d oeuvres while they purchased tickets for the Tricky Tray. The guests also participated in silent auctions for the chance to win Caribbean vacation packages. The guests then made their way to the dinner tables and the ceremonies began with remarks from Jason Fink (Chairman), Nick Gagis (Co-Chairman),Peter Paizis (Parish Council President), and finally a prayer by Father Anargyros. The delicious and plentiful food was generously donated by our faithful parishioners, Mike Siderias of the Suburban Diner and George Hrissikos of MBH & Hrissikos Foods. Food was also generously donated by John Amoratis of the Bacari Grill, Peter Anastasopoulos of the Land & Sea Diner and Peter Hadjirou of Greek Taverna. The food was prepared & organized by Maria Xanthos, Maria Salemme & Rita Pavlou who did an absolutely amazing job. During the dinner, the Tricky Tray prizes were drawn. Additionally, live auctions were held for foursomes at private golf country clubs as well as a live auction to drive a new 2018 Maserati for the weekend. The evening was capped off with our 50/50 drawing. With so many amazing luxury prizes & delicious food all attendees left with a big smile on their faces and full stomachs. The 4th Annual St. Athanasios Charity Golf Classic was yet again a tremendous success. In only its fourth year the Golf Outing has netted over $157, for our community of St. Athanasios. This success is only made possible by our Golfers, Sponsors, Food Donors, Gift Donors Volunteers, and Ministries within our Church. On behalf of the Golf Outing Committee we extend a great thank you for your generosity, time and support. Sincerely, Jason Fink Golf Outing Chairman Nick Gagis Golf Outing Co-Chairman

Dear Parishioners, G.O.Y.A. With great excitement, our group began the GOYA activities for this ecclesiastical year! We welcomed our new and returning GOYA members with an ice cream social and continued with our first meeting. Our GOYA ministry has grown to over fifty registered members! We also attended the Harvest dance, hosted by Trenton, which was a wonderful time where we were able to socialize with over four hundred other GOYAns from around New Jersey. Our sports activities have also begun and we are looking forward to our first game on October 14. On October 14 we will also begin our Coat Drive to help those less fortunate. We ask you to drop off clean, gently used coats between October 14 and October 28 at church. These coats will be distributed through the Bridges Organization to those in need. Another event the group looked forward to was the Mr. and Miss GOYA Pageant. Katherine Scoullos and myself had the honor of representing St. Athanasios for the 2018 competition. This Pageant, for those unfamiliar, is an interview style competition centered around our Greek Orthodox faith. The interviews started the day before the ceremony. The next day, ten finalists were chosen and each had to answer a question again, based on our faith. Katherine and I were humbled and proud as we were both finalists in the competition! I came in third place for Mr. GOYA and Katherine placed runner-up for Miss GOYA. With this experience, I realized that this achievement was only possible due to our involvement in the church and Sunday school. We would like to thank our Sunday School teachers and our community for their support. This was an amazing experience and I feel all of the participants grew closer to our faith. I encourage any Greek-Orthodox boy or girl from 7th through 12th grade and 12 years old to contact our church office and register for GOYA if they have not done so already. With Love in Christ, George Makris GOYA President Get together for GOYA alumni of the last 5 years High School graduates and their parents. Please join us at the church hall for a bagel brunch on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 10:30a.m. Please RSVP to Martha Stavris or Lucy Papamichael

H.O.P.E / J.O.Y. Good Afternoon to all of our St. Athanasios Families, We want to welcome you to another exciting year of HOPE/JOY! Our group has grown and our children were busy these past few months with the following activities: October 19th: Pumpkin Painting Party November 30th: Making Care Packages for St. Athanasios College Freshmen to receive during exam week December 14th: Christmas Party/Gift Exchange We will be ing our "2019 Calendar of Activities": early in the year and updating on our Facebook page. Please "like" our private FB page, St. Athanasios HOPE/ JOY, for the latest news and updates. If you do not receive our current , please contact Ellainy to be added to the distribution list. What is HOPE/JOY? The purpose of HOPE (Hellenic Orthodox Primary Education) and JOY (Junior Orthodox Youth) is to gather and create Orthodox Christian fellowship for children ages 4-7 (we accept children below the age of 4, but MUST be accompanied by parent) and 8-12 respectively. By making friendships early on, the children will want to come and participate later for GOYA (Greek Orthodox Youth of America) and have a greater participation in the Greek Orthodox Christian community as they grow and also make lifelong friendships. Activities are held once a month on Fridays (usually following the conclusion of Greek Dance) and center on themes/holidays that take place in the month. Father begins the activity with a lesson for the children and prayer, followed by dinner and the activity. All HOPE/JOY families must be current stewards with St. Athanasios for the year & have completed registration (attached). We hope to see you and your families in future activities! Your H.O.P.E./J.O.Y. Advisors: Ellainy Karaboitis-Christopoulos. Angela Koutsouras (201) (201)

FOS MINISTRY BOOKSTORE OF ST. ATHANASIOS

Love in Action This year St. Athanasios will continue the Homeless Outreach Program to bring much needed food and care to men, women, and children in our area who are in need. As many of you already know, last year we began an effort to collect food for donation in a Food Collection Box at the rear entrance of our church. This effort has already been a big success in helping to feed low-income families, and this year we would like to give even more. We will be putting our desire to help into action by partnering with a homeless shelter in Northern NJ to help prepare and serve warm meals for the needy. We hope to make this a community-wide effort, with every age group involved in some way - whether through food donation, meal preparation, driving, serving, or some other facet. We are still at the early stages but before we can begin this fruitful work, we are looking for volunteers who are interested in helping to develop and sustain this new program. If you would like to get involved, please contact the church office. This is a time of great need for many people. For anyone who has ever felt a call to give back, this is an opportunity to really make a difference in someone's life. THE 2ND ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY The 2nd Annual General Assembly meeting will be held on Sunday, November 4th immediately after the Divine Liturgy Service. We urge all parishioners to attend this very important meeting. It is our obligation and responsibility as parishioners of St. Athanasios Church to attend and participate in the decisions of our Church and community. All parishioners have already received a seperate individual mailing regarding the agenda for the General Assembly.
