1 Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ August 6 The Τransfiguration of our Lord, and God, and Savior Jesus Christ Ἡ Μεταµόρφωσις τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτήρος ἠµῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ August 6 In the third year of His preaching, the Lord Jesus often spoke to His disciples of His approaching passion but at the same time of His glory following His suffering on the Cross. So that His impending passion would not totally weaken His disciples and that no one would fall away from Him, He, the Allwise, wanted to partially show them His divine glory before His passion. For that reason, He took Peter, James and John with Him and, with them, went out at night to Mount Tabor and there was transfigured before them: "And His face shone as the sun and His garments became white as snow" (Matthew 17:2). There appeared along side Him, Moses and Elias, the great Old Testament prophets. And, seeing this, His disciples were amazed. Peter said: "Lord, it is good for us to be here: if You will, let us make here three tabernacles; one for You, one for Moses and one for Elias" (Matthew 17:4). While Peter still spoke, Moses and Elias departed and a bright cloud overshadowed the Lord and His disciples and there came a voice from the cloud saying: "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased; hear Him" (Matthew 17:5). Hearing the voice, the disciples fell to the ground on their faces as though dead and remained that way, lying in fear, until the Lord came near to them and said: "Arise and be not afraid" (Matthew 17:7). Why did the Lord take only three disciples on Tabor and not all? Because Judas was not worthy to behold the divine glory of the Teacher, Whom he will betray and the Lord did not want to leave him [Judas] alone at the foot of the mountain so that the betrayer would not, by that, justify his betrayal. Why was our Lord transfigured on a mountain and not in a valley? So as to teach us two virtues: love of labor and godly-thoughts. For, climbing to the heights required labor and height represents the heights of our thoughts, i.e., godly-thoughts. Why was our Lord transfigured at night? Because, the night rather than the day is more suitable for prayer and godly-thoughts and because the night, by its darkness, conceals all the beauty of the earth and reveals the beauty of the starry heavens. Why did Moses and Elias appear? In order to destroy the error of the Jews, as though Christ is one of the prophets; Elias or Jeremiah or some other that is why He appears as a King above the prophets and that is why Moses and Elias appear as His servants. Until then, our Lord manifested His divine power many times to the disciples but, on Mount Tabor, He manifested His divine nature. This vision of His Divinity and the hearing of the heavenly witness about Him as the Son of God, should serve the disciples in the days of the Lord's passion, in strengthening of an unwavering faith in Him and His final victory. 1

When You were transfigured upon a high mountain, having Your chief disciples with You O Savior, You shone forth in glorious majesty thus proving that those who surpass in the height of virtues shall be counted worthy of the divine glory. By talking with Christ, Moses and Elias showed that He is Lord of both the living and the dead, the God Who spoke of old through the Law and the Prophets. And the voice of the Father testified to Him from the cloud of light, saying, Hear Him Who through His cross plows under hell and gives eternal life to the dead. Stichos 6 For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages. The mountain that was once gloomy and veiled in smoke has now become venerable and holy, since Your feet, O Lord, have stood upon it. Your dread Transfiguration, the mystery hidden from before the ages, has been Αἰνεῖτε τὸν Κύριον πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, ἐπαινέσατε αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ λαοί. Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent. Moses said to the Lord, See, You say to me, Bring up this people ; but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, I know you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight. Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, show me now Your ways, that I may know You and find favor in Your sight. Consider too that this nation is Your people. And He said, My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. And he said to Him, If Your presence will not go with me, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not in Your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and Your people, from all other people that are upon the face of the earth? And the Lord said to Moses, This very thing that you have spoken I will do; for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name. Moses said, I pray You, show me Your glory. And he said, I will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you My name The Lord ; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. Verses Tabor was glorified above earth s every region When it looked upon God s nature shining in glory. This glorious event is recorded in the Gospels of Mark (9:2-13), Luke (9:28-36 in Orthros) and Matthew (17:1-9 in Liturgy). In the third year of His preaching, the Lord Jesus often spoke to His disciples of His approaching passion and His glorious Resurrection. So that His impending passion would not totally weaken His disciples, the All-wise Savior wanted to show them His divine glory before His passion on the Holy Cross. (This is why we sing the Katavasias of the Holy Cross on this day). For that reason, He took Peter, James and John with Him and went out at night to Mount Tabor. The Lord took only three disciples on Tabor because the Lord did not want to leave the unworthy Judas alone at the foot of the mountain so that the betrayer would not, by that, justify his betrayal. Our Lord was transfigured on a mountain and not in a valley to teach us two virtues: love of labor and godly-thoughts. For, climbing to the heights required labor and height represents the heights of our thoughts; i.e., godly-thoughts. 15

16 Moses and Elias appeared in order to destroy the erroneous thought of the Jews that the Christ is one of the prophets; that is why He appears as a King above the prophets and that is why Moses and Elias appear as His servants. Until then, our Lord manifested His divine power many times to the disciples but, on Mount Tabor, He manifested His divine nature. This vision of His Divinity and the hearing of the heavenly witness about Him as the Son of God would serve the disciples in the days of the Lord s passion, in strengthening of an unwavering faith in Him and His final victory.
