1 The Jeanne Rosemary Georgiles Foundation Scholarship - Academic year The foundation provides two scholarships of $1,000 each to students who have graduated from High School (Grade 12) in 2015 and entered University as full time students. The application deadline for this scholarships is February 1 st, All recipients must be members of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa. The DELPHI ADVISORY RESOURCE GROUP (DARP) The DELPHI Advisory Resource Group is still accepting nominations for individuals to serve as advisors. The creation of the Delphi Advisory Resource Group (DARG) was approved at a recent General meeting of HCO members. Its goal is to serve as a resource pool of experts to provide input and advice on various issues of concern to the HCO board. It is hoped that this Group can draw on the vast wealth of knowledge and expertise of members within the Community to improve the quality of input for current and future decision-making and for improving overall communications between the HCO Board and the broader community. Members of the Advisory Group should have unique and diverse skills, expertise, and experience, representing the broad spectrum of the HCO Network and should be intellectually honest and frank when providing the best advice possible. Representatives in the areas of Spiritual, Communications, Legal, Philanthropic, Youth, Educational and Government/Community relations are still required. 5 ST. ANTHONY THE GREAT JANUARY 17 Anthony was born in Egypt in the village of Coma, near the desert of the Thebaid, in the year 251 A.D. His parents were pious Christians of illustrious lineage. Anthony was a serious child and was respectful and obedient to his parents. He loved to attend church services, and he listened to the Holy Scripture so attentively, that he remembered what he heard all his life. When St Anthony was about twenty years old he lost his parents, but he was responsible for the care of his younger sister. Going to church about six months later, the youth reflected on how the faithful, in the Acts of the Apostles (4:35), sold their possessions and gave the proceeds to the Apostles for the needy. Then he entered the church and heard the Gospel passage where Christ speaks to the rich young man: "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come follow Me" (Mt.19:21). Anthony felt that these words applied to him. Therefore, he sold the property that he received after the death of his parents, distributed the money to the poor, left his sister in the care of pious virgins in a convent and went into the Egyptian desert. There he met a group of monks who took him into their care. In the desert Anthony applied himself diligently to prayer and study.following a period of many years of self-denial, during which he not only acquired a scholarly intimacy with the Scriptures but also a proximity to God, he emerged as a man of piety. As a result, his counsel was sought by both monks and laymen. When the Synod of Nicaea was convened, Anthony was seventy-four years old and was recognized as a man whose wisdom commanded respect. For this reason, he was invited to attend this historic meeting despite the fact that he held neither title nor power. His eloquent defense of the Orthodox doctrine concerning the person of Jesus Christ was instrumental in weakening the position of Arianism*. His witness led to the eventual and complete elimination of Arianism. [* Arianism: Founded by Arius, belief asserting that Christ was not God like the Father, but a creature made in time. Rejected by the Council of Constantinople (381).] Returning to his Egyptian desert monastery, St. Anthony applied himself to refining the rules of monasticism and to establishing a chain of monasteries. He attracted hundreds of monks to asceticism and greatly furthered the propagation of the Christian faith. Anthony s inspired leadership led to the creation of a monasticism in which active participation in the spread of Christianity was fostered through writing and counseling. At the same time, this form of monasticism did not neglect private meditation and prayer. The monastic rules of St. Anthony, the patriarch of monastic life, have served as the basis for countless monasteries. He died in his desert retreat at the age of 105, in 356 A.D. Excerpts from and Orthodox Saints vol. 1 by George Poulos ΟΣΙΟΣ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΣ Ο ΜΕΓΑΣ ( ) (17 Ιανουαρίου) Ο άγιος Αντώνιος, «ο καθηγητής της ερήμου», είναι από τους λίγους που έλαβαν την προσωνυμία " μέγας ". Ο βίος του, που συνεγράφει από έναν άλλον μέγα, τον σύγχρονό του άγιο Αθανάσιο, Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αλεξανδρείας, είναι υπερθαυμαστός και αξιοζήλευτος. Η μελέτη του πρέπει να αποτελεί εντρύφημα όλων εκείνων, οι οποίοι ποθούν να βιώσουν το μεγαλείο της, κατά Χριστόν, ζωής. Ο μέγας Αντώνιος με την άσκηση και την αδιάλειπτη προσευχή έφθασε στην κορυφή της πνευματικής ζωής και απέκτησε την αληθινή σοφία. «Ονομάζει τον εαυτό του ιδιώτην και ήταν αγράμματος, είχε όμως διδάσκαλον την άνωθεν σοφίαν του Πνεύματος. Από την σοφία αυτή, φωτισμένος και εμπνευσμένος έδωκε σοφότατες αποκρίσεις σε διαφόρους Χριστιανούς, που ζητούσαν να ωφεληθούν ψυχικά, όπως φαίνεται σε πολλά μέρη των "Γεροντικών" βιβλίων. Εκτός από αυτές άφησε και τα «εκατόν εβδομήκοντα κεφάλαια», που περιλαμβάνονται στην "Φιλοκαλία" και προσφέρουν μεγάλη ωφέλεια σε όσους τα διαβάζουν.» Άσκηση ονομάζεται η προσπάθεια που κάνει ο άνθρωπος να μεταμορφώσει τα πάθη του, να καθαρθεί από τα πάθη, για να μπορέσει να αγαπήσει «εξ όλης ψυχής και καρδίας», τον Θεό και τον άνθρωπο. Γιατί είναι αδύνατο να αγαπά αληθινά όποιος εξουσιάζεται από τα πάθη και κυρίως από την φιλαυτία, που καταδυναστεύει τον άνθρωπο και κάνει την ζωή του δύσκολη. Φιλαυτία είναι η άλογη αγάπη προς τον εαυτό μας και από αυτήν, ως από μητέρα, γεννώνται όλα τα άλλα πάθη, όπως της υπερηφανείας, της κενοδοξίας, της φιληδονίας, της φιλαργυρίας κ.α. Στις ημέρες μας, συχνά γίνεται λόγος για την αγάπη, την ειρήνη και τη φιλία μεταξύ των ανθρώπων και των λαών και για άλλα παρόμοια. Καλά είναι όλα αυτά, αλλά το ερώτημα είναι πώς μπορεί κανείς να αγαπά τους άλλους και να ειρηνεύει μαζί τους, την στιγμή που είναι υποδουλωμένος στα πάθη και δεν μπορεί να ειρηνεύσει με τον ίδιο τον εαυτό του; Η γνήσια αγάπη, κατά τον άγιο Μάξιμο τον ομολογητή, είναι έκγονος απαθείας και διαρκεί και πέραν του τάφου, είναι «συνομήλικη με τους αιώνες». Αντίθετα, η εμπαθής αγάπη είναι ψεύτικη και διαρκεί όσον καιρό είναι σε θέση να υπηρετεί και να τρέφει ή να τρέφεται από τα πάθη. Και πώς είναι δυνατόν να έχει αντοχή και διάρκεια αφού οι συνθήκες ζωής αλλάζουν, τα συμφέροντα μεταβάλλονται και το ανθρώπινο σώμα φθείρεται και αλλοιώνεται; Ο άγιος Αντώνιος με τους σκληρούς αγώνες του εναντίον των πνευμάτων της πονηρίας και της υπερηφανίας, απέκτησε την υψοποιό ταπείνωση. Εν τούτοις ο Θεός του απεκάλυψε ότι υπάρχει κάποιος υποδηματοποιός στην Αλεξάνδρεια, που τον έχει ξεπεράσει στην πνευματική ζωή και τον απέστειλε να διδαχθει το πνευματικό έργον εκείνου. Και όπως σημειώνει ο Γέροντας Σωφρόνιος Σαχάρωφ: «Έμαθεν εξ αυτού να σκέπτηται ενδομύχως: Οι πάντες σώζονται, εγώ δε μόνος απόλλυμαι». Τον λόγον αυτό μπορούν να τον αντέξουν μόνον εκείνοι, που έχουν κατακτήσει το ακρότατον ύψος της ταπεινοφροσύνης. Ο Άγιος Αντώνιος μας προτρέπει: «Είναι ανάγκη να τρέχουμε να θεραπεύουμε τα πάθη της ψυχής, γιατί μέλλουμε να κριθούμε κατά πρόσωπον Θεού και για να μη βρεθούμε τιποτένιοι ή καταγέλαστοι». Πρωτ. π.
