3 From the desk of Father Christos Decisions, Decisions, Decisions / Priorities, Priorities, Priorities Although different in meaning each word has a direct impact on the other and vice-versa. One s decisions are influenced by one s priorities and one s priorities are guided by one s decisions. Confusing? Not really when you consider the following and how important they are in our lives: family, friends, career, money, security, faith/god, love/happiness and peace. The decisions we make are often influenced by their priority in our list of priorities. Depending on where we are at in our life s journey will determine what our priorities are. If we are a teenager, our friends come first. If we are finishing our formal education our career comes first. If we are married, our family; in business, the bottom line; approaching retirement, financial security; and the list continues based on age, marital status, and career. Now comes the difficult question. Where does God fit into our list of priorities? Is He number one, number ten, or nowhere at all? How does our faith function in our decision making? Do we ask ourselves - - What would our Lord do in this situation? How would He decide? How would He react? Not easy questions to answer, especially difficult when our faith in God, His commandments, and teachings, are not even considered as relevant to our lives and standards of living. I cannot imagine anyone acknowledging today s society as the ideal that we are seeking. There are many problems that can contribute to it not being acceptable as is part of the problem can be attributed to our emphasis on the individual on the me, the I in place of us. When life is predicted on the I and me, then there is no room for anyone else. Now tell me, for the sake of argument, if you were God, how would you react to being last on the list or left out completely? It does not have to be that way we can do something about it. We can place the icon of Christ first, and in doing so give our life a direction, a purpose, a cause for being that goes beyond ourselves. Have you ever been on a ship with its rudder jammed? You go in circles no destination. If we allow the Lord and His teachings to be our rudder, then our ship will make it to port, our destination will be reached (Heaven) and our purpose will be accomplished salvation. Amen.
4 Fellow Parishioners, I hope you all are well. I want thank those of you who have returned your Capital Campaign Cards and 2016 Stewardship Cards. If you have not, please try to return these items as soon as practical. Stewardship Sunday is November 8th. Please make it a point to join us that day. Also, with respect to your 2016 Stewardship Card, please take the time to select those areas of the Church Ministry where you can lend your time and talents. We all should take ownership in our Church and good Stewards do not just finance our Church, but also sustain and build our Church through Ministry organization and participation. Our Ministries can always use your assistance and support, not to mention fresh ideas and approaches. As Stewards of the Orthodox faith, we appreciate what our Church gives us and so, in turn, we must give back. In the coming days, you will be notified and informed of a wonderful scholarship opportunity for our children of Holy Trinity. The Boines Scholarship Fund will provide thousands of dollars in scholarship opportunities for those pursuing educational opportunities beyond high school. The awards will be based solely upon participation in Church ministries and not restricted by financial or academic criteria. This program is a unique and lucrative opportunity to encourage and reward participation in our youth ministries for many years to come. Thank you to all of those who organized and supported many recent events in our Parish including the Golf Tournament, the Philoptochos Bid-N-Buy, and the Hellenic University Club's Lecture Series Event with Dr. Michael Soupios. A Steward is a person who MANAGES the affairs of God on earth. God has made each of us a Steward and has given us ABILITIES that are unique. Here at Holy Trinity we strive to accomplish God's work with all our strength, love and joy. This community has been blessed by the almighty God for many decades to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to everyone around us. This work could not be accomplished without your generous contributions, donations and most importantly your presence. This is the time of the year in which we need to look back and forward. Back, in order to examine if we have been good and faithful Stewards fulfilling our promise to God, and forward, in order to commit again ourselves and one another to Him and to His Church.

14 Holy Trinity Food Pantry We here in America ~ all of us (Greek, Italian, Polish, German, etc.) celebrate together the great All-American Holiday THANKSGIVING! It has been said that it all began in 1621 and it is still celebrated today around our nation with family and friends. On this very special day, all of us come together, some from great distances, to celebrate and to give thanks for all we have and also for our great country ~AMERICA!! With Thanksgiving fast approaching, more food will be needed to fill the hundreds of food baskets that will be prepared and delivered to the poor and unemployed throughout the city by various organizations. We, the parishioners of Holy Trinity, can be involved in this special food drive by starting to fill the bins found around the church, by the office, in the Sunday School Hallway and on the balcony of our church hall, with non-perishable food such as: Soups, fish, vegetables, meat, fruit, (any canned item), cereals, sugar, rice, pasta, Jellies, Peanut Butter, Pasta Sauces, Mac & Cheese, baby food, coffee, tea, gravies, flour, sugar, etc. Any food that will not spoil. Also, for your convenience, we will pick up any frozen food item from your home ~ just call the church office ( ) ~ the deadline for this convenient pick-up service is Monday, November 23. FROZEN FOOD items can be: turkeys, other meats, vegetables, complete frozen dinners, any food found in the frozen food section of your favorite market. We at Holy Trinity are proud to be involved in the local food drive of feeding the poor. Your food donations will reach the tables of our city s less fortunate. This group is evergrowing and it is estimated that 1 in 5 children leave home hungry every day. Again this year, our Sunday School children will be pitching in to help. A flyer will be given to all Sunday School children to ask them to join the effort. We thank our youth for setting the example for us to follow!! Your Food Pantry Committee ~ John, Nikkie, Steve & Tina ~ wish you all a Happy Healthy Thanksgiving. May you all know that joy of family and friends and the satisfaction of giving to others!

16 JOHN CHRYSOSTOM, ARCHBISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE / November 13 Apolytikion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone The grace of your words illuminated the universe like a shining beacon. It amassed treasures of munificence in the world. It demonstrated the greatness of humility, teaching us by your own words; therefore, O Father John Chrysostom, intercede to Christ the Logos for the salvation of our souls. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Second Tone You received divine grace from Heaven, and by your own lips taught all to worship the One God in Trinity. All-blessed, venerable John Chrysostom, deservedly, we praise you for you are a teacher clearly revealing things divine. Reading: This greatest and most beloved of all Christian orators was born in Antioch the Great in the year 344 or 347; his pious parents were called Secundus and Anthusa. After his mother was widowed at the age of twenty, she devoted herself to bringing up John and his elder sister in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. John received his literary training under Anthragathius the philosopher, and Libanius the sophist, who was the greatest Greek scholar and rhetorician of his day. Libanius was a pagan, and when asked before his death whom he wished to have for his successor, he said, "John, had not the Christians stolen him from us." With such a training, and with such gifts as he had by nature, John had before him a brilliant career as a rhetorician. But through the good example of his godly mother Anthusa and of the holy Bishop Meletius of Antioch (see Feb. 12), by whom he was ordained reader about the year 370, he chose instead to dedicate himself to God. From the years 374 to 381 he lived the monastic life in the hermitages that were near Antioch. His extreme asceticism undermined his health, compelling him to return to Antioch, where Saint Meletius ordained him deacon about the year 381. Saint Meletius was called to Constantinople later that year to preside over the Second Ecumenical Council, during which he fell asleep in the Lord. In 386 Bishop Flavian ordained John presbyter of the Church of Antioch. Upon his elevation to the priesthood his career as a public preacher began, and his exceptional oratorical gifts were made manifest through his many sermons and commentaries. They are distinguished by their eloquence and the remarkable ease with which rich imagery and scriptural allusions are multiplied; by their depth of insight into the meaning of Scripture and the workings of God's providence; and, not least of all, by their earnestness and moral force, which issue from the heart of a blameless and guileless man who lived first what he preached to others. Because of his fame, he was chosen to succeed Saint Nectarius as Patriarch of Constantinople. He was taken away by stealth, to avoid the opposition of the people, and consecrated Patriarch of Constantinople on February 28, 398, by Theophilus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who was to prove his mortal enemy. At that time the Emperor of the East was Arcadius, who had had Saint Arsenius the Great as his tutor (see May 8); Arcadius was a man of weak character, and much under the influence of his wife Eudoxia. The zealous and upright Chrysostom's unsparing censures of the lax morals in the imperial city stung the vain Eudoxia; through Theophilus' plottings and her collaboration, Saint John was banished to Pontus in 403. The people were in an uproar, and the following night an earthquake shook the city; this so frightened the Empress Eudoxia that she begged Arcadius to call Chrysostom back. While his return was triumphant, his reconciliation with the Empress did not last long. When she had a silver statue of herself erected in the forum before the Church of the Holy Wisdom (Saint Sophia) in September of 403, and had it dedicated with much unseemly revelry, Saint John thundered against her, and she could not forgive him. In June of 404 he was exiled to Cucusus, on the borders of Cilicia and Armenia. From here he exchanged letters with Pope Innocent of Rome, who sent bishops and priests to Constantinople requesting that a council be held. Saint John's enemies, dreading his return, prevailed upon the Emperor to see an insult in this, and had John taken to a more remote place of banishment called Pityus near the Caucasus. The journey was filled with bitter sufferings for the aged bishop, both because of the harshness of the elements and the cruelty of one of his 310 guards. He did not reach Pityus, but gave up his soul to the Lord near Comana in Pontus, at the chapel of the Martyr Basiliscus (see May 22), who had appeared to him shortly before, foretelling the day of his death, which came to pass on September 14, 407. His last words were "Glory be to God for all things." His holy relics were brought from Comana to Constantinople thirty-one years later by the Emperor Theodosius the Younger and Saint Pulcheria his sister, the children of Arcadius and Eudoxia, with fervent supplications that the sin of their parents against him be forgiven; this return of his holy relics is celebrated on January 27. Saint John was surnamed Chrysostom ("Golden-mouth") because of his eloquence. He made exhaustive commentaries on the divine Scriptures and was the author of more works than any other Church Father, leaving us complete commentaries on the Book of Genesis, the Gospels of Saints Matthew and John, the Acts, and all the Epistles of Saint Paul. His extant works are 1,447 sermons and 240 epistles. Twenty-two teachers of the Church have written homilies of praise in his honour. Besides his feasts today and on January 27, he is celebrated as one of the Three Hierarchs on January 30, together with Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory the Theologian. It should be noted that, because September 14 is the Exaltation of the Cross, the Saint's memory has been transferred to this day. 19 SYNAXIS OF THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL & THE OTHER BODILESS POWERS: GABRIEL, RAPHAEL, URIEL, SALAPHIEL, JEGUDIEL, & BARACHIEL / November 8 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone O Commanders of the Heavenly Host, we the unworthy beseech you, that through your entreaties you will fortify us, guarding us in the shelter of the wings of your ethereal glory, even as we fervently bow before you crying: "Deliver us from all danger, as Commanders of the Powers on high! Kontakion in the Second Tone Chief Commanders of God; ministers of divine glory; guides for men and leadership of the Incorporeal; as Chief Commanders of the Incorporeal, plead for our welfare and for great mercy. Reading: All the Angels, according to the Apostle Paul, are ministering spirits, - sent forth to minister to them who shall be heirs of salvation - (Heb. 1:14). God set them as overseers of every nation and people, and guides to that which is profitable (Deut. 32:8); and while one Angel is appointed to oversee each nation as a whole, one is also appointed to protect each Christian individually. He commands them to guard them that hope on Him, that nothing should harm them, neither should any evil draw nigh to their dwelling (Ps. 90:10-12). In the Heavens they always behold the face of God, sending up to Him the thrice -holy hymn and interceding with Him in our behalf, seeing they rejoice over one sinner that repents (Esaias 6:2-3; Matt. 18:10; Luke 15:7). In a word, they have served God in so many ways for our benefit, that the pages of Holy Scripture are filled with the histories thereof. It is for these reasons that the Orthodox Catholic Church, wisely honouring these divine ministers, our protectors and guardians, celebrates today the present Synaxis that is, our coming together in assembly for their common feast to chant their praises, especially for the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who are mentioned in the Scriptures by name. The name Michael means "Who is like God?" and Gabriel means "God is mighty." The number of Angels is not defined in the divine Scriptures, where Daniel says that thousands of thousands ministered before Him, and ten thousands of ten thousands attended upon Him -(Dan. 7:10). But all of them are divided into nine orders which are called Thrones, Cherubim, Seraphim, Dominions, Powers, Authorities, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. KATHERINE THE GREAT MARTYR OF ALEXANDRIA / November 25 Apolytikion in the Plagal of the First Tone Let us praise the most auspicious bride of Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai, our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly silenced the eloquence of the impious by the sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr, she asks great mercy for all. Kontakion in the Second Tone O friends of martyrs, now divinely raise up a renewed chorus, praising the allwise Katherine. For, she proclaimed Christ in the arena, trampled on the serpent, and spat upon the knowledge of the orators. Reading: Saint Catherine, who was from Alexandria, was the daughter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relics were taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai, where they were discovered many years later; the famous monastery of Saint Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush, but later was dedicated to Saint Catherine. According to the ancient usage, Saints Catherine and Mercurius were celebrated on the 24th of this month, whereas the holy Hieromartyrs Clement of Rome and Peter of Alexandria were celebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of these Saints were interchanged at the request of the Church and Monastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of Saint Catherine, their patron, might be celebrated more festively together with the Apodosis of the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos. The Slavic Churches, however, commemorate these Saints on their original dates.

Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas The Neighborhood Our visits to Greece are not always pleasant. There are also unpleasant ones, which we know that sooner or later will happen. One of them is the loss of the last remaining parent. The loss becomes worse if we are not present at their funeral, because the loss takes longer to heal, since we were not present at the moment of the burial. I feel lucky in my anticipated misfortune, because I was present at the funeral of my two parents. Both times, the support of the neighborhood, where I lived part of my life with my parents until I immigrated to my new homeland, the USA, was wonderful and soothing. In Greece there not is yet The Funeral Home for honoring the dead and expressing sympathy to his/her family at certain times. The neighborhood and the relatives visit the deceased's house to express their condolences. It resembles the visits for the name days. Nobody needs an invitation to visit. The door is open to everyone. The discussion usually is about other things, usually politics that really makes the sad atmosphere lighter. The visit usually goes on for many hours. After the funeral, many neighbors try to alleviate your pain by inviting you to their home, usually for dinner. People, who probably after many years of living together in the same neighborhood had problems with the deceased, forget everything even for a moment and invite you to their home. In these difficult times, the neighborhood is the comforter that you need to alleviate their pain. They share with you common stories from your childhood years and they ensure you that they will be there for you when and if you will need something. Many times these are only words, because everyone has their own problems, but at that moment you feel that you are not alone. Unfortunately in the US the neighborhood usually does not exist. Our neighbors are people who happened to buy a house there, and they do not share anything in common with us from the past, and therefore do not have anything more to offer each other beyond formal condolences. The reality and our social and economic success killed our own neighborhood, which were our communities.
