2 FATHER JAMES MESSAGE The old-time radio program station that keeps me company while I drive had a special seasonal presentation last week: Christmas in July. All the programs -- variety, drama, comedy, mystery, etc -- had Christmas themes that had aired during the Christmas season. Initially, I thought it was a unique concept, until I realized that every summer the Orthodox Church also airs a special season: Pascha in August -- the Falling Asleep or Koimisis of the Theotokos. I always look forward to the celebration of Mary s assumption into heaven, with the Paraklisis service during the week; the Great Vespers, featuring the singing of the Egomia of the Panagia in front of her tomb; and the Divine Liturgy on the 15thof the month. The Gospel of St. Luke states that Mary is the greatest women who ever lived. Both the Archangel Gabriel and the saintly Elizabeth confess to Mary: Blessed are you among women. (Lk. 1:28, 42) Thus, the Orthodox Church shows great respect and honor to the Mother of God by practicing a fast period of 14 days to prepare for the great feast day. The Panagia is blessed for several reasons, the greatest of which is that she conceived, carried, gave birth and nurtured the very Savior of our souls. The One Who occupied the heavenly throne of David, and is seated at the right hand of God, entered the human race and became the Savior through her womb. She was sovereignly chosen by the Father to bear His Only Begotten Son. Coupled with that, Mary is the first person in all history to receive and accept Christ as her Savior, and, therefore, was the first Christian. Early in Christian history, she is called the first to be redeemed. Following her example, we are called to enthrone the Lord in our hearts and in our lives. When entering a traditional Byzantine Orthodox Church, you would immediately notice the icon of the Platytera -- arms open and Christ in her bosom -- in the apse behind the altar. This is perhaps one of the greatest evangelistic icons in the entire Church. What you see is Christ living as Lord in Panagia s life and her outstretched arms are inviting us to let Him live in our lives. The power of this icon is great! During the Divine Liturgy, I focus on this icon because of the peace and serenity it exemplifies. Panagia has set the pace for all of us to personally give our lives to Jesus Christ. A meaningful, symbolic and beautiful contrast to the icon of the Platytera, is the icon of the Koimisis, depicting Christ holding in his arm an infant, the soul of His mother. From the beginning of recorded Christian worship, Orthodoxy has taken special care to honor Mary. There is an ancient hymn which begins: It is truly right to bless you, O Theotokos and she is called in this hymn: ever-blessed and most pure We do not worship the Theotokos, for worship is reserved for the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. She is, however, most certainly to be honored and venerated -- henceforth, all generations will call me blessed (Lk. 1:48) -- being the Mother of Christ, and, therefore, the mother of us all. She is the true Mother of the Body of Christ, the Church. Many in today s society have a problem with respect and honor. Watching the contemporary news, I have witnessed an attitude of disrespect and intimidation. While God s Word tells us to honor and give preference to each other (Rom. 12:10), there seems to be a delight in challenging and humiliating others. We are called upon to give honor to whom honor is due (Rom. 13:7). August comes to remind us to prepare our hearts and minds to give the Mother of our Lord her proper honor because God has done a great thing for us through her. As Orthodox Christians, we do not live by feeling. We live by faith and are challenged with three objectives: living and experiencing the faith in worship and prayer; experiencing faith as love through care, charity, gentleness and diaconia; and finally experiencing faith as truth about God, about us and about the universe. Join in prayer at the Paraklisis services starting August 1st, that the Theotokos shelter in her arms those living; attend her burial praising her with the Lamentations; and celebrate Pascha in August at the Divine Liturgy of the Koimisis on August 15th. Let us remember the Mother of God and follow her example in exalting Christ, proclaiming her the Theotokos.

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. GOSPEL Matthew 9:1-8 A t that time, getting into a boat Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Rise and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins," he then said to the paralytic "Rise, take up your bed and go home." And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

6 Saints and Feasts of the Week HOLY TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR SAVIOR JESUS Our Lord had spoken to His disciples many times about the coming persecutions and afflictions that they would endure. Since all these evils were near at hand, but the enjoyment of good things which they hoped to receive in their stead was yet to come, our Savior desired to give them full assurance, evidently and openly, concerning that glory which is prepared for those who endure to the end. Therefore, He took His three foremost disciples and ascended Mount Tabor, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as the light. Suddenly, together with this dread and marvelous effulgence of light, there appeared those pinnacles of the Prophets, Moses and Elias, who spoke with the Lord Jesus concerning His saving Passion which was about to take place. Standing before Him, they showed that He is the Lord of both the living and the dead, for Moses came forth from Hades, having died many centuries before, and Elias, as it were from heaven, whither he had been taken up while yet alive. After a little while a radiant cloud overshadowed them and out of the cloud they heard that same voice which had been heard at the Jordan at the Baptism of Christ, testifying to the Divinity of Jesus and saying: "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased; hear ye Him" (Matt. 17: 5). Η ΜΕΤΑΜΟΡΦΩΣΙΣ ΚΥΡΙΟΥ ΗΜΩΝ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ Κατά τη διήγηση των Ευαγγελιστών, ο Κύριος μας Ιησούς Χριστός πήρε από τους μαθητές τον Πέτρο τον Ιωάννη και τον Ιάκωβο και ανέβηκε στό όρος Θαβώρ για να προσευχηθεί. Οι τρεις μαθητές Του κάθισαν να ξεκουραστούν κι έπεσαν σε βαθύ ύπνο. Όταν, ξύπνησαν, αντίκρισαν απροσδόκητο και εξαίσιο θέαμα. Το πρόσωπο του Κυρίου άστραφτε σαν τον ήλιο, και τα ρούχα Του ήταν λευκά σαν το φως. Τον περιστοίχιζαν δε και συνομιλούσαν μαζί Του δυο άνδρες, ο Μωϋσής και ο Ηλίας. Αφού οι μαθητές συνήλθαν κάπως από την έκπληξη, ήλθε σύννεφο που τους σκέπασε και μέσα απ' αυτό ακούστηκε φωνή που έλεγε: «Οὗτος ἐστὶν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός αὐτοῦ ἀκούετε». Η Μεταμόρφωση του Σωτήρος, ως σπουδαία δεσποτική εορτή αποτελεί εξαίρεση εθιμικά καθιερωμένης ιχθυοφαγίας, μέσα στην σύντομη αλλά αυστηρή νηστεία του Δεκαπενταύγουστου. Σε πολλούς τόπους πιστεύουν ότι την παραμονή το βράδυ, κάποια ώρα, ανοίγουν ξαφνικά οι ουρανοί και φαίνεται το «άγιο φως», σε όσους είχαν την υπομονή και την πίστη να ξαγρυπνήσουν. Ανήμερα δε, προσφέρουν στους ναούς τα πρώτα σταφύλια της χρονιάς, για να ευλογηθούν από τον ιερέα μετά την θεία λειτουργία, και να διανεμηθούν ως ευλογία στους πιστούς. Πρόκειται για το αρχαίο έθιμο των απαρχών, της προσφοράς δηλαδή των πρώτων καρπών στον Θεό, μια μορφή αναίμακτης τελετουργικής θυσιαστικής προσφοράς, που πέρασε και στον χριστιανισμό. Ο λαϊκός άνθρωπος, προσκομίζοντας για ευλογία τις απαρχές των καρπών και των γεννημάτων του, αναθέτει ουσιαστικά την ελπίδα της επιβίωσής του στον Θεό. Ήδη στους Αποστολικούς Κανόνες επιτρέπεται η προσαγωγή στον ναό σταφυλιών, όχι όμως και άλλων οπωρικών, ενώ η εξαίρεση αυτή των σταφυλιών ερμηνεύεται από το ότι το κρασί, που προέρχεται από αυτά, χρησιμοποιείται για την παρασκευή της θείας κοινωνίας. Έτσι, τα ευλογημένα σταφύλια μοιράζονται και τρώγονται μαζί με το αντίδωρο στην Λέσβο, ενώ στον Μοσχοπόταμο της Πιερίας άφηναν το πρώτο τσαμπί του τρύγου σε κάποιο εικόνισμα του ναού, για να πάει καλά η σοδειά. Και φυσικά, ως σπουδαία εορτή είναι και εθιμικά καθιερωμένη αργία, η παραβίαση της οποίας, από κάποιους ασεβείς και φιλάργυρους, επέφερε την άμεση θεϊκή τιμωρία, σύμφωνα με τις παραδόσεις του ελληνικού λαού, για παραδειγματισμό και των υπολοίπων.

7 THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him.
