2 FATHER JAMES MESSAGE Once he turned six, I would take my older son with me to the Paraklisis services ahead of the Dormition of the Theotokos in August. He would sit quietly in the altar or even take out a lantern during the Gospel reading. Once, after reading the Gospel lesson for the first small Paraklisis service, he asked me why I had said his name. I had to pause to understand what he was talking about. Indeed, toward the end of the Gospel we read, αγαλλίασε το πνεύμα μου επί τω Θεώ τω σωτήρι μου ( and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior ). With the words τώ σωτήρι μου, he had heard his name, Soteri. I had to explain that it wasn t his name, but that it means savior and is another name for the Lord. I complemented the little guy for listening and told him that the Church would celebrate his name day on August 6th and he would get to eat grapes. On this date, before the August 15th commemoration of the falling asleep of our All- Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, we celebrate the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ. In Greek, it is called Η Θεία Μεταμόρφωσις του Κυρίου και Θεού και Σωτήρος ημών Ιησού Χριστού. This major feast day of the Lord was reported in the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew 17:1-9; Mark 9:2-9; and Luke 8: The icon for this event shows the physical change of the Lord, atop Mt. Tabor, surrounded by three disciples - - Peter, John and James -- along with the prophets Moses and Isaiah. I m sure that what occurred to their teacher and the sudden appearance of the two prophets must have freaked out the disciples. The iridescent glowing Christ depicts that He is God, possessing divine glory. According to Scripture, the divine glory is an uncreated light in which God eternally dwells, a majestic radiance which transcends all earthly things, yet shows itself at significant moments when God chooses special persons to fulfill His purposes. Moses had seen the divine glory as a flame of fire emanating from the burning bush. Isaiah the Prophet beheld it as a vision of the Lord sitting upon His throne. On Mt Tabor, the three disciples experienced it as a transformation of Jesus in divine glory, testifying to the truth that He is the Son of God. The disciples were so enthralled with the event, they wanted to stay on the mountain and not go home again. It s the same experience we feel when we go to church: We want to stay, but we need to go back to our homes and carry on with our lives. The Transfiguration was an encouragement to strengthen the faith of the disciples. And oh, did they need strengthening, especially when they would be faced with the Crucifixion of the Lord! They, too, as His followers, were to take up their own cross and follow Him. Yet He was the King and the Son of Man to come in the glory of His Father, a reality partially unveiled to the disciples in the Transfiguration. He who was to die was the Lord of Glory. The presence of Moses and Isaiah in the Transfiguration light also showed to the disciples that the representatives of the Law and the Prophets bore testimony to the mission of Jesus. This sacred event anticipates the Resurrection of Christ. The same divine light that radiated from the transfigured Jesus pierced as lightning the darkness of hell and gave new life to the world. In one of the Sunday hymns, we hear: When You descended unto death, O life immortal, You destroyed Hades with the light of Your divinity. And when You raised the dead from the depths of darkness, all the heavenly powers shouted: O giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You! Each of us inwardly bears a reflection of this glory of Christ as a spiritual treasure in clay pots (II Cor. 4:7). And that is another concept that should not freak us out! Finally, on this day, the Orthodox Church has the beautiful custom of blessing the grapes. The practical meaning of this tradition is that the fruit is now at (Cont. on p. 11)

GOSPEL Matthew 9:27-35 A t that time, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

6 Saints and Feasts of the Week LAURENCE THE HOLY MARTYR & ARCHDEACON OF ROME This Saint, who was born in Spain, was the Archdeacon of the Church of Rome, caring for the sacred vessels of the Church and distributing money to the needy. About the year 257, a harsh persecution was raised up against the Christians by Valerian. Pope Sixtus, who was from Athens, was commanded to worship the idols, and refused; before his martyrdom by beheading, he committed to Laurence all the sacred vessels of the Church. When Laurence was arrested and brought before the Prefect, he was questioned concerning the treasures of the Church; he asked for three days' time to prepare them. He then proceeded to gather all the poor and needy, and presented them to the Prefect and said, "Behold the treasures of the Church." The Prefect became enraged at this and gave command that Laurence be racked, then scourged with scorpions (a whip furnished with sharp iron points - compare II Chron. 10:11), then stretched out on a red-hot iron grill. But the courageous athlete of Christ endured without groaning. After he had been burned on one side, he said, "My body is done on one side; turn me over on the other." And when this had taken place, the Martyr said to the tyrants, "My flesh is now well done, you may taste of it." And when he had said this, and had prayed for his slayers in imitation of Christ, he gave up his spirit on August 10, 258. ΛΑΥΡΕΝΤΙΟΣ ἈΡΧΙΔΙΑΚΟΝΟΣ Οι Άγιοι Λαυρέντιος αρχιδιάκονος, Ξύστος πάπας Ρώμης και Ιππόλυτος μαρτύρησαν το 253. Ο άρχιδιάκονος Λαυρέντιος ήταν από τους πιο γνωστούς κληρικούς της ρωμαϊκής Εκκλησίας, και του είχαν εμπιστευθεί τη διαχείριση της περιουσίας της. Όταν έγινε ο διωγμός κατά των χριστιανών, ο πάπας Ρώμης Ξύστος (ή Σίξτος) ο Β', που καταγόταν από την Αθήνα, πρώτος πρόσφερε θυσία τον εαυτό του, ομολογώντας τον Χριστό και αποκεφαλίστηκε. Κατόπιν συνέλαβαν και το Λαυρέντιο. Επειδή ήταν διαχειριστής της Εκκλησίας, τον διέταξαν να παραδώσει τους θησαυρούς της. Ο Λαυρέντιος δέχθηκε, και μετά από λίγο επέστρεψε με μια μεγάλη φάλαγγα αμαξών, γεμάτες φτωχούς, ορφανά και αναπήρους. Και απάντησε στον ηγεμόνα ότι σε όλους αυτούς τους πάσχοντες είναι αποταμιευμένοι οι θησαυροί της Εκκλησίας, «ὅπου οὔτε σῆς οὔτε βρῶσις ἀφανίζει, καὶ ὅπου κλέπται οὐ διορύσσουσιν οὐδὲ κλέπτουσιν» (Ευαγγέλιο Ματθαίου, στ' 20). Δηλαδή, όπου ούτε σκόρος, ούτε σαπίλα και σκουριά αφανίζουν αυτούς τους θησαυρούς, και όπου ούτε κλέφτες μπορούν να τρυπήσουν τους τοίχους αυτών των θησαυροφυλακίων, για να κλέψουν το πολύτιμο περιεχόμενο τους. Εξαγριωμένοι τότε οι ειδωλολάτρες, έψησαν το Λαυρέντιο ζωντανό, πάνω σε σιδερένια σχάρα. Το λείψανο του παρέλαβε κάποιος ευσεβής χριστιανός, ο Ιππόλυτος. Όταν, όμως, το έμαθε αυτό ο ηγεμόνας, διέταξε και τον έσυραν άγρια άλογα μέσα σε αγκάθια, και έτσι μαρτυρικά τελείωσε τη ζωή του και ο Ιππόλυτος.

7 THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him. Every time I celebrate the Paraklisis and read the Gospel, I m reminded of my little boy listening to his name being read and chuckle to myself. With the Paraklisis, I anticipate the annual celebration of the Transfiguration, symbolically going to Mt Tabor to witness Christ reflected in His glorious light. We are fed spiritually with this sacred event in the life of Christ and fed physically with the fruit of the earth. Enjoy!
