Harakas The Resurrection of Christ is the one of the most important and central aspects of our Orthodox Christian faith. I n three of the Gospels, an event is described in which Jesus Himself was challenged by the leading Sadducees, who rejected belief in the resurrection. Jesus countered their denials with an affirmation of resurrection (Mark 12:18-27); Matthew 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40), saying You are quite wrong! (Mark 12:27). In John 5:29 Christ taught that those who have done good, (will come) to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment. Elsewhere He declared, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live (John 11:25). So, on the third day after His Crucifixion and death, Jesus Himself became the victor over death, sin, evil and the Devil, by conquering death through His Resurrection. The biblical words are still powerful and striking: He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Lo, I have told you" (Matthew 28:6-7). It was the first sermon of the Church He has risen from the dead! Later, when Judas had to be replaced among the Twelve Apostles, one of the conditions of his replacement was that the candidate must become with us a witness to His resurrection" (Acts 1:22). At Pentecost, St. Peter proclaimed the Resurrection of Christ: This Jesus, God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses (Acts 2:32). The Apostles began their preaching by proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead (Acts 4:2). We learn that the preaching on the central importance of Christ s Resurrection continued in the Church: With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all (Acts 4:33). In Saint Paul s apostolic ministry, the Resurrection of Christ was central. In describing his message to the Christians in Rome, of greatest significance was his preaching of Christ, who was the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 1:4). When some of the Christians in Corinth raised doubts about the resurrection of the dead, St. Paul responded with a vehement argument: Now if Christ is preached as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Corinthians 15:12-19). So it is, that St. Peter declared this core affirmation of the Christian faith when he wrote Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3). In our Orthodox Church, the Resurrection of Christ is central, especially in worship. Every Sunday is a little Pascha, commemorating Christ s Resurrection. At Pascha, we read St. John Chrysostom s Easter Sermon where it is proclaimed, O death, where is your sting? O Hades where is your victory? Christ is risen, and you are annihilated.... Christ is risen, and life is liberated... for Christ having risen from the dead, has become the first fruits of those who fall asleep. Brothers and sisters! Christ is Risen! Truly, He is Risen!

We will update our Breezeway to compliment the changes we have made to the Church A proposal has been made to extend the Fellowship Hall for additional space for meetings and fellowship for some of our organizations. This will be a self-contained area. A committee has been formed to gather preliminary information to be presented at the next meeting. A donation was of $2,000 was made to Help the Homeless in our city which is a direct response to a written request made by the Office of the Mayor of Winston-Salem to our Church. Other churches in the city have been approached as well. The Annunciation Foundation is in the process of applying for its own tax identification number protecting the Church and Foundation respectively. The recent retreat we hosted was a good turnout. A purchase of a copier for the office was needed. We purchased a used refurbished model. Father Demetri along with a committee are working on the 2014 Assessment of our Church to be reported to the Metropolis. Among all the good works that our church community performs, more meaningful gifts to deserving students is another heartfelt, generous, parish kind act. In addition, the sum total of the Foundation Founder gifts, subsequent gifts, memorials, willed donations, and recently, a share of Festival earnings, creates an earnings base that for the first time, allowed the Foundation to budget financial assistance. The Foundation s first call for assistance came less than thirty days after the budget creation. These funds must remain ready, as difficult, individual situations are acute and time sensitive. Understand that while the larger scholarship grants and the first time assistance budget are mile stones, these sums remain modest with respect to tuition costs and the costs of need and illness. Please be mindful that each gift is never to be spent principal, added the Foundation s principal base. The accumulation of earnings coupled with consistent giving is a long but steady process. The Foundation Board respectfully asks each parishioner to remember the Foundation in their charitable, memorial, and willed donation gifts. Like the gifts three decades ago from our Foundation Founders, every Foundation donation given today, no matter how small, becomes larger in the years to come and a much more capable gift in the decades to come. For your family and for family generations, today is the beginning of the age, the hardships, and the beauty to come. Please give today and please give during Great Lent. Start small, and watch with satisfaction, this act, and future acts of kindness and generosity blossom and multiply. Thank you, Respectfully Submitted by the Foundation President and Foundation Board HOLY WEEK IN THE ORTHODOX CHURCH A brief explanation PALM SUNDAY - On this day, we celebrate Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The people met Him with palm branches and cried, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! PALM SUNDAY EVENING - The service of Palm Sunday Evening helps us understand Christ s passage from death to life and how each of us can also become free from sin and death. This evening we commemorate Christ the Bridegroom by singing The Hymn of the Bridegroom, warning us to be prepared for Christ s coming. The priest carries the Icon of the Bridegroom in procession. We behold Christ as the Bridegroom of the Church, bearing the marks of suffering, yet preparing a marriage Feast for us in God s Kingdom. HOLY MONDAY EVENING - Holy Monday services urge us to be spiritually prepared to receive Christ. We should take this time to reflect on The Parable of the Ten Virgins, the maidens who filled their lamps with oil and were prepared to receive the Bridegroom. Those with empty lamps were shut out of the marriage feast. Thus each of us should light our lives with faith and good works and be ready to receive Christ. HOLY TUESDAY EVENING - During this service, we remember the sinful woman who anointed Christ in anticipation of His death. Her repentance and love of Christ is the theme of the Hymn of Kassiani, which is chanted on this night. HOLY WEDNESDAY - The Sacrament of Holy Unction is celebrated on this day when we confess our sins and seek to be reconciled with God. The priest anoints us with holy oil that we may be healed physically and spiritually. HOLY THURSDAY MORNING - The Divine Liturgy of Holy Thursday consists of Vespers and the Liturgy. On this day we celebrate the meaning of what Christ said and did at the Last Supper. HOLY THURSDAY EVENING - The service of the twelve readings narrates the events of Jesus Holy Passion, and His last instructions to the disciples. Following the fifth gospel, the crucifix is carried in procession. This symbolizes Christ s coming to Golgotha to offer Himself as a sacrifice for the world s sins. HOLY FRIDAY - Holy Friday is a day of mourning, fasting and prayer. On this day we commemorate the Passion of Jesus Christ, for on this day, Our Lord went to the Cross and died to take away our sins. The power of death and the reality of evil rule the world on this day. Yet, Jesus Christ s death marks the beginning of His and ours - victory over death s power. APOKATHELOSIS - During this service, we relive the death of our Lord and His removal from the Cross. During the Gospel reading, the Body of Christ is removed from the Cross and is wrapped in a white sheet. The priest then takes it into the Sanctuary. THE LAMENTATIONS - The Hymns of Lamentations are sung this evening as we lament Jesus undeserved death for our salvation. With both sorrow and joy we sing the Lamentations to Him who is symbolically buried, yet who we already know is risen. During this service, the Epitaphio is taken in a candlelight procession around the church. The flowers which adorn the tomb are given to the faithful, which are symbolic of the many gifts the Lord has given us, the greatest of which is eternal life.

6 HOLY SATURDAY MORNING - On Holy Saturday morning, we celebrate the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil. This is the Blessed Sabbath, a day of strict and fasting, but a day of hope and waiting. We know that because Christ died, death is no longer the end of life. Christ descended into hell that death itself might be destroyed. Anticipating Christ s victory over the power of death, we sing: Arise, O God, Judge the earth. For to Thee belong all the nations! EASTER SUNDAY - Today we celebrate Our Lord s glorious resurrection. The Resurrection service at midnight begins in a darkened church. As the faithful receive the resurrection light from the priest, a procession is formed to the Narthex. The people hear the good news of Christ s triumph over death from the Gospel. The joyous hymn of Christ s resurrection is triumphantly chanted: Christ is Risen! SERVICE OF AGAPE - At Noon, we gather to celebrate the Agape service and forgive our fellow Christians, in which the Gospel message is read in many languages to illustrate the Christian message going out to the whole world. HOLY CONFESSION During Lent and Holy Week the Sacrament of Holy Confession will be offered for spiritual healing. Please call the office to schedule an appointment with Fr. Demetri. Let the harshness of the day and its struggles not spread over the night too, God. +DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America FESTIVAL 2014 Once again we are actively preparing for our upcoming Festival, scheduled for May 16, 17 & 18. The Executive Committee, Publicity and Baking Committees have been hard at work planning and preparing for the Festival. We are one of the few communities that make all of the festival goods. A great deal of credit goes to our ladies who work hard on Mondays at 5:00pm and Tuesdays at 9:00am. Thank you ladies for your hard work and dedication. The men regularly help with product preparation and will be cutting and preparing the meat in May. Thank you men for your hard work. Again this year we will be ing the flyer to all our members to forward to all of their contacts. This helps us publicize our festival, especially in that the city does not allow us to post signs on the city right of way. The Greek Festival Committee list is included in the bulletin. Please help the booth chairperson by contacting them and offering your help. Thank you. The Good Samaritan helpers visited/sent cards to the following members of the Church this month: Barbara Pappas and Ann Athanos. Dear Ladies of Philoptochos The H.O.P.E ministry is turning out to be a very worthwhile community outreach program for us and many has helped by coming on Saturday s to prepare lunches. So far we have made a total of 800 lunches! Along with delivering meals we have also been taking gently used clothing to them and they are very appreciative of it. I want to thank Nia Kazakos for heading up the clothing drive. Everyone has been very generous with their donations. If you have any questions about this program or would like to help please let me know. This year for our April general meeting we will have a Spiritual Workshop. The theme will be about the Saints Martha and Mary and how we are living our lives as Orthodox Christian Women. Presvytera Mary Christy has been kind enough to let me use the presentation that she had for us at the Metropolis Spiritual Workshop that was held at the Diakonia Center. I enjoyed it so much there, that I wanted to bring to our women here in Winston-Salem what we had learned. I am sure you all will have just as much fun learning about them as we did there. Since April 12 th is Saturday of Lazarus, I feel like it is only right that we have our meeting Friday April 11 th. Come and find out which one you are more like. Are you a Martha or a Mary? Our Palm Sunday luncheon will be Sunday April 13 th and we will be selling fresh baked Tsourekia made by our own ladies for $6. ANNUNCIATION CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Testimonial from a parent of one of our Preschool students It is easy to tell why I chose ACA for my three children's pre-school experience. 10 Sunday School News from the Annunciation We hope you are all having a wonderful Lenten season. With Pascha only three weeks away, our hearts and minds should be fully engaged in the beauty of this me of year. March was a very busy month. Our Angel Choirs sang like angels on March 2nd. The congrega on praised them for the wonderful job they did. And our K 2 students processed beau fully around the church with their icons during the Sunday of Orthodoxy and crosses during the Venera on of the Cross. They held their icons and crosses very high and with great honor. The Oratorical Fes val presenta ons were also held in March. We were so happy to have eleven students par cipate this year! All of them did a wonderful job speaking on their faith. We congratulate them for having the confidence to verbally share work with us. Our Junior Division was comprised of George Dallis, Maggie Epes, Anna Ilyasov, Vasili Liaskonis, and Marianna and Travis Lion s. Senior Division par cipants were Andrianna Dallis, Dafni Michael, Margarita Skordas, Pelagia Tsatsaronis, and Christos Ziogas. Special congratula ons to Maggie Epes, Vasili Liaskonis, Pelagia Tsatsaronis, and Christos Ziogas who were chosen to be representa ves for the Annuncia on in our District Level presenta ons which will be held April 5 th at St. Luke s in Mooresville. Prepare children ahead of time. How do we behave at yiayia s? What are we going into the store to buy? 12. Give parameters for children to solve their own problems. When the two of you work it out, you can have the video game back.
