5 EPISTLE Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7 In those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, "it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochoros, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaos, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. GOSPEL Mark 15:43-47; 16:1-8 At that time, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." 7 SAINT CONSTANTINE St Constantine was the son of Constantius Chlorus and of Helen. When his father died, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312, on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him, he marched into Italy, where, while at the head of his troops, he saw in the sky after midday, beneath the sun, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: "By this shalt thou conquer." The following night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (a banner of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Licinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Under him all the persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325, he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which he himself personally addressed. In 324, in the ancient city of Byzantium, he laid the foundations of the new capital of his realm, and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11, 330, naming it after himself, Constantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thither from Rome, it was named New Rome, the inhabitants of its domain were called Romans, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire. Falling ill near Nicomedia, he requested to receive divine Baptism; and when he had been deemed worthy of the Holy Mysteries, he reposed in 337, on May 21, having lived 65 years, of which he ruled for 31 years. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apostles, which had been built by him. SAINT HELEN After her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant throughout the Roman Empire, St Helen undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified. After this, in her zeal to glorify Saints and Feasts Christ, she erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Savior was born, another on the Mount of Olives whence He ascended into Heaven, and others throughout the Holy Land, Cyprus, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta, her image was stamped upon golden coins, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bithynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety, she departed to the Lord being about 80 years old, according to some in the year 330, according to others, in 336. ΆΓΙΟΙ ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΕΛΕΝΗ Ο Μέγας Κωνσταντίνος γεννήθηκε το 274 μ.χ. Πατέρας του ήταν ο Κωνστάντιος ο Α' ο Χλωρός και μητέρα του η Ελένη. Σε ηλικία 18 ετών έγινε στρατιωτικός και χάρη στην ανδρεία του, προάχθηκε γρήγορα στα ανώτατα αξιώματα του στρατού. Ο Κύριος θέλοντας να τον βοηθήσει στον αγώνα του κατά του Μαξεντίου και του Λικίνιου, στη συνέχεια σχημάτισε στον ουρανό το σημείο του Σταυρού με την επιγραφή «Εν τούτω Νίκα», προσφέροντάς του ένα ισχυρότατο όπλο για να κατατροπώσει τους εχθρούς του. Με το χριστιανικό σταυροειδές λάβαρο με το ελληνικό μονόγραμμα «Εν τουτω νικα», τελικά νίκησε τα στρατεύματα του Μαξεντίου και έπειτα του Λικινίου. Επίσης, ήταν ο πρώτος αυτοκράτορας που ευνόησε την Εκκλησία. Μετέφερε την πρωτεύουσα του κράτους του στο αρχαίο Bυζάντιο, και εκεί έκτισε την βασίλισσα των πόλεων, την Κωνσταντινούπολη. Λίγο πριν πεθάνει, ο Κωνσταντίνος αξιώθηκε και του Αγίου Βαπτίσματος. Εκοιμήθη σε ηλικία 63 ετών, την 21 Μαΐου 327. Η Εκκλησία τον ανεκήρυξε Άγιο και Ισαπόστολο. Ο Κωνσταντίνος ενδιαφέρθηκε για τα ιερά σεβάσματα των χριστιανών, για το λόγο αυτό απέστειλε στα Ιεροσόλυμα την μητέρα του, να βρει τον Τίμιο Σταυρό. Μετά την εύρεσή του, η Αγία Ελένη, αφού διχοτόμησε τις κεραίες του δημιούργησε δύο Σταυρούς εκ των οποίων τον ένα μετέφερε στην Κων/πολη. Η Αγία Ελένη βοήθησε να χτιστούν οι πρώτοι μεγάλοι ιεροί ναοί της Χριστιανοσύνης. Εκοιμήθη ειρηνικά το 327 μ.χ. σε ηλικία 83 ετών.

9 THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him.

ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry which provides a hot meal and fellowship to those in need. Volunteers for cooking, serving meals and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. Remember the book of Matthew 25:35-36:...For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. 11 T HELP THE HOMELESS he Shepherd Center, of which St Nicholas parishioners Mary Burruss and Naomi Patterson were founders, has begun a new outstanding journey. A program that aims to centralize all services currently being offered by various ministries in the area is being headed by St Nicholas representatives Nikitas Manias and Chris Palaidis. These services will now take place at the Shepherd Center facilities. Shower systems have been provided by Nikitas & Aspasia Manias. We are now in need of two new industrial washers and industrial dryers. This will allow many of the homeless in our area to wash their clothes, a basic luxury that is taken for granted by most of us. Please contact Mr Manias or Mr Palaidis if you can assist in this important project. BOOKSTORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Looking for something meaningful to volunteer your spare time a few hours a week? Do you enjoy reading and sharing your knowledge on Orthodox subjects? These are just some of the many benefits the volunteers enjoy at our Cathedral Bookstore. We are currently looking to keep the bookstore staffed by two persons per shift and would like to open on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
