4 General Assembly Parish News On Sunday, October 21st, following the coffee hour, we will have the Fall General Assembly. All the members in Good Standing are welcomed to attend, take part in its discussions and vote therein. Do not forget that through your participation, you take part in the administration of the Parish and in the direction of its life and activities. Stewardship Month - November November will be Stewardship Month in our church. During this month we will have several events with guest speakers. It is also a chance to meet the advisors/ coordinators of our ministry programs. We invite you to participate and indicate what your ministry and financial commitment will be to our Lord in **Submit your 2013 stewardship pledge cards during the month of November and participate in a drawing which will take place in December.** Tri-Ortho There will be a Tri Ortho Meeting on Wednesday, October 10th at St. George Community Center at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. 5 Philoptochos News Autumn Bazaar The annual Autumn Bazaar will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd & 4th. We need volunteers to work in the kitchen and at all of the other areas beverages, raffle, attic treasures, pastry, and penny sale. We also need donations of new items for the Penny Sale, items in good condition for the Attic Treasures table, and pastry (ravani, karidopeta, paximathia, halva etc, - not peta). PLEASE SUPPORT OUR BIGGEST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR! On October 30th, the ladies will be baking pita and meatballs. Coffee Hours Please contact a Philoptochos Board member or the church office if you would like to sponsor a coffee hour. If you have a special date in mind, please reserve it early. 6 Youth News UPCOMING EVENTS OCT 7 Family Sunday (no Sunday school) OCT 14 Youth Ministry sponsors coffee hour OCT 14 JOY Fall Pumpkin Event OCT 21 GOYA pie sale (following Liturgy) Greek Dancing begins on Sunday, October 1:30PM--this will allow for the St. George Greek School children to join us. All children ages 7-18 welcome!! Please join us in welcoming Tom Katsiantonis as our Dance Instructor this year. Lily Hitchen and Eleni Dellas will also return to help with the children. Dancing will take place in the church hall. Fall Fundraiser Calling all children--this year we will be selling Yankee Candles for a fundraising event to purchase new costumes for our Christmas Pageant and for the GOYA end-of-year event. All materials will be given to the children in the beginning of October. Our sale will run through the end of October. I hope that all children will be willing to help us sell these candles and accessories. Please feel free to call me with any questions, Stephanie Family Sunday There will be no Sunday School classes on Sunday, October 7th in observance to Columbus Day Weekend. Youth Ministry sponsoring Coffee Hour On Sunday, October 14th, the Youth Ministry will sponsor the coffee hour. JOY Fall Pumpkin Event On Sunday, October 14th, JOY will have its Fall Pumpkin event following the coffee hour. For more information please contact any Youth Advisor, Stephanie Piet or Julie Karagianis. GOYA Apple Pie Sale On Sunday, October 21st, GOYA will have an apple pie sale in the church hall following the Sunday services. On Saturday, October 20th from 8:00am to 12:00pm, the GOYA will use the kitchen to cook the apple pies. 6

7 ...Sunday School/Religious Education Classes play an important part in teaching our children about our Faith and our Heritage. We hope our parish families make every effort to encourage the children to participate as Father Athanasios and our teachers put much effort into coordinating the Program and into the weekly lessons for the children. We are looking forward to an informative and interesting year for all! For questions or more information please contact Stephanie Piet through the church office at The JOY program is designated for our youth ages Various spiritual and social events will be held on a regular basis in order to give the children (and parents) an opportunity to spend time with each other while learning about matters of faith, culture and society....the G.O.Y.A. program is designated for our Young Adults ages and offers them an opportunity to spend social time together while discussing and learning about our faith, culture and social issues. The group volunteers time and service to different events during the course of the year, and sponsor a number of Collections to donate to needy programs through the assistance and generosity of our parish community. PLEASE NOTE: ALL CHILDREN MUST BE REGISTERED AND A RELEASE FORM MUST BE SIGNED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN IN ORDER FOR A CHILD TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY YOUTH PROGRAM. 9 Spiritual Readings SAINT DEMETRIOS, the Great Martyr and Myrovletes (myrrhemitting), was born in Thessalonica in 260 A.D. His parents were illustrious people and along with the transitory glory which Demetrios had from his family, he was adorned with imperishable virtues, with prudence, with sweetness, with humility, with justice, and with every noble comeliness of the soul. All these were like precious stones which shone on the crown which he wore, and this crown was the faith in Christ. In those days, Diocletian reigned in Rome, and he had appointed as Caesar in the parts of Macedonia and the East a hard-hearted and bloodthirsty general who was called Maximian, a beast in human form as were all those military rulers (polemarchs) who then ruled the world with the sword: Diocletian, Maxentius, Maximian, Galerius, Licinius -- hard headed, fiercefaced, strong-jawed, grim-mouthed, with short thick necks like barrels, ruthless, and terrifying. He in turn appointed Demetrios ruler of Thessalonica and all Thesalia. When Maximian returned from a certain war, he gathered the officers of Thessalonica in order to offer a sacrifice to the idols. Then Demetrios revealed that he was a Christian, and did not accept hewn stones as gods. Maximian went into a rage and ordered that he be tried and imprisoned in a bath. While he was imprisoned, the mourning populace ran to hear Demetrios teach the word of Christ. A young lad, Nestor, also went every day and heard his teaching. During those days, many brave men fought in the stadium and Maximian rejoiced at these spectacles. He even had a certain henchman Lyaeus, a beastly man, brass-knuckled, an idolator and blasphemer, who was brought from some barbarous nation. Nestor, seeing that Lyaeus had defeated all and boasted that he had the strength of Ares, the pagan god of war, and that no native dared wrestle with him, went to the prison and besought St. Demetrios to bless him to defeat and put to shame Lyaeus and Maximian and their religion. Saint Demetrios prayed and made the sign of the Cross over him, and immediately Nestor ran to the stadium and wrestled with that fierce giant, he threw him down, and slew him. Maximian became beside himself with rage and upon learning that Nestor was a Christian and that St. Demetrios had blessed him, ordered the soldiers to have them both put to death. The soldiers went to the bath and lanced St. Demetrios with their spears, and thus he received the eternal crown on the 26th of October, 296 A.D., at the age of thirty-six. It is written that when he saw the soldiers thrusting their spears at him, he raised high his arm and they lanced him in the side, so that he might be deemed worthy to receive the lancing which Christ received in His side, and blood and water ran from the wound. Nestor was beheaded with his own sword the next day (holy Martyr Nestor of Thessalonica is commemorated in the holy Orthodox Church on the 27th of October) outside the walls at the place of the Golden. The Christians took the holy remains and buried them side by side, and from the grave of St. Demetrios there came forth holy myrrh 9

10 which cured many diseases. For this reason he is called Myrovletes. Over his holy grave and the place of his holy martyrdom there was built a church in the form of a basilica which stands to this day. This then is the holy martyrdom of Saint Demetrios the Great Martyr and Myrrh- bearer, who loved our Savior above all things of this life - - pleasures, wealth, honors - - and longed to be dissolved that he might be found with Him in the celestial Kingdom, through whose prayers may we also be deemed worthy of like fate. Source: The Orthodox Word, St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood, Platina, California Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος γεννήθηκε περί το 280 μ.χ. και πέθανε το 303 ή το 305 μ.χ. στη Θεσσαλονίκη και αποτελεί έναν από τους Μεγαλομάρτυρες της Χριστιανοσύνης. Ο Δημήτριος ήταν γόνος αριστοκρατικής οικογένειας στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Σύντομα ανελίχθηκε στις βαθμίδες του Ρωμαϊκού στρατού με αποτέλεσμα σε ηλικία 22 ετών να φέρει το βαθμό του χιλιάρχου. Ως αξιωματικός του ρωμαϊκού στρατού κάτω από τη διοίκηση του Τετράρχη (και έπειτα αυτοκράτορα) Γαλερίου Μαξιμιανού, όταν αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Διοκλητιανός, έγινε χριστιανός και φυλακίστηκε στην Θεσσαλονίκη, διότι αγνόησε το διάταγμα του αυτοκράτορα Διοκλητιανού «περί αρνήσεως του χριστιανισμού». Μάλιστα λίγο νωρίτερα είχε ιδρύσει κύκλο νέων προς μελέτη της Αγίας Γραφής. # Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, μέσα στη φυλακή ευλόγησε τον μαθητή του Νέστορα "κατασφραγίσας το μέτωπο αυτού δια του σταυρού", να νικήσει τον ειδωλολάτρη παλαιστή Λυαίο "μεγέθει σώματος και ρώμη τους κατ αυτόν υπεβάλλων". Η νίκη του Νέστορα εξόργισε τον Αυτοκράτορα Μαξιμιανό που παρευρίσκετο στο στάδιο και έτσι ο μεν Νέστορας αποκεφαλίστηκε, ο δε Δημήτριος δολοφονήθηκε με λογχισμό στα πλευρά ("λόγχη τρωθείς την πλευράν"). # Στη συνέχεια οι παρευρισκόμενοι χριστιανοί παρέλαβαν το μαρτυρικό λείψανο και το έθαψαν και πάνω στο τάφο το 412 ο έπαρχος του Ιλλυρικού Λεόντιος "την τε δόξαν λαμπρός, την τε προς τον Χριστόν πίστιν μάλα θερμός", έκτισε ναό "μέσον του σταδίου και του δημοσίου λουτρού κάλλιστα διηρημένου". # Οι συγγραφείς εγκωμίων του Αγίου Δημητρίου, Ευστάθιος Θεσσαλονίκης, Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς και Δημήτριος Χρυσολωράς, αναφέρουν ότι το σώμα του Αγίου ετάφη στον τόπο του μαρτυρίου, ο δε τάφος μετεβλήθη σε βαθύ φρέαρ που ανέβλυζε μύρο, εξ ου και η προσωνυμία του Μυροβλήτου. # Στις βυζαντινές εικόνες αλλά και στη σύγχρονη αγιογραφία ο Άγιος Δημήτριος παρουσιάζεται αρκετές φορές ως καβαλάρης με κόκκινο άλογο, σε αντιδιαστολή του λευκού αλόγου του Αγίου Γεωργίου, να πατά τον άπιστο Λυαίο. # Είναι πολιούχος της Θεσσαλονίκης, όπου βρίσκεται ο ομώνυμος ναός πάνω από τον τάφο του. Εορτάζει στις 26 Οκτωβρίου. 10

Within the Christian church as a whole, the word stewardship is an unpopular word. In the minds of most people, the word calls up associations that are not altogether pleasant. This is because the people of the church have come to think of steward largely in the terms of raising money. Christian stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God and God s family, the church, in managing in all of life and life s resources for God s purpose.
