2 U N D E R G R A D U A T E C O U R S E S (Winter Semester ) Section of Ancient and Medieval History Ancient History (AIS) ΑΙS 607 Katerina Panagopoulou The Hellenistic East: Economy, Society and Culture in the Seleucid Kingdom (Lecture course) The Seleucid kingdom succeeded the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire in Asia Minor and the East after Alexander s death. Administrators of Makedonian origin faced the challenge of establishing an effective, functional and long-lasting administrative machine upon the structures laid under Persian rule. The Seleucid paradigm highlights the process in which two cultures, Hellenic and Persian-Achaemenid, were combined in Hellenistic kingdoms. Questions will be raised, such as: what was the attitude of the new hegemons vis-å-vis existing institutions in the conquered regions? In what ways did they attempt to establish and maintain power? Did local populations react violently against them or did they accept them as pursuers of the old régime? Which features emerged from the combination between the Achaemenid and the Greek culture? What sprang from the merging between Greek and Eastern religious beliefs? How did the Seleucids treat their counterparts in other Hellenistic Kingdoms? And, ultimately, why and in what ways did Rome penetrate into the world of the former Persian Empire? How did it manage to appropriate the later Seleukids and, ultimately, to dominate Asia? 3 Byzantine History (BIS) BΙS 601 Konstantinos Moustakas The political and social aspect of religious conflict in Byzantium (Lecture course) Byzantine history is commonly known to be especially characterized by matters concerning religious affairs, doctrinal and ecclesiastical conflicts etc. This course addresses such matters in a discussion of their social and political background and character, in a timeline perspective ranging from the beginnings of Byzantine history to the final break with the Roman Catholic Church in Particular themes to be addressed are the following: - The position of the first Christians into the Roman state and their attitude toward it. - The gradual adoption of Christianity as an official religion in the context of the transformation of Roman state structures during the 4 th century. - The subsequent need to set a right doctrine for the new state religion and first relevant conflicts: areianism. - The monophysite clash as an expression of cultural and political digression in the eastern lands of early Byzantium - Religious conflicts and their socio-political background in the years of crisis: monothelism, iconomachy. - The steps to the break between Byzantium and the Roman Catholic Church. - Social unrest and its religious expression in the Byzantine East and the Balkans: paulicianism, bogomilism. - The break of The course has no particular prerequisites in terms of the students background, thus it is recommended to starting students. Students can opt to prepare one or more essays which may contribute to their final evaluation mark. Their utility and value as historical sources (Seminar) In this seminar course the students will be introduced to the use of Byzantine documents as sources to historical research and study. The introductory part of the course includes a presentation and analysis of the different types of byzantine documents, the circumstances of their preservation, the archives in which they are housed, and the context of their publication projects. The student essays will be basically based on imperial chrysobulls, in respect to their content (allocation of privileges to individuals and monasteries, status of cities, international treaties), documents of imperial functionaries, mainly the praktika (tax censuses) and delimitations, as well as in private documents (sale contracts, wills etc.). Müller, Acta et Diplomata Graeca, Sacra et Profana, 6 vols., Vienna Archives de l Athos, Paris 1960 Medieval History (IMX) IMX 206 Aglaia Kasdagli Florence and the Renaissance era (Lecture course) The course will deal with the Late Middle Ages in Western Europe. It will focus on the city of Florence (and Tuscany) during the 14 th and 15 th centuries, at the time that the cultural and artistic movement known as Italian Renaissance was flourishing. The concept, the significance and the historiography of the Renaissance will be discussed, but emphasis will be given to the conditions and the society that created it. It will be examined as a medieval phenomenon but also as an evolution that led to the early modern era. As an afterword the diffusion of the phenomenon beyond Tuscany and gradually all over Europe will be discussed. 5 IMX 319 Aglaia Kasdagli The Medieval West in literature and films (Seminar) As an introduction to the subject of historicity in literature and visual representations the students will become familiarized with the relevant bibliography, focusing on examples concerning medieval Europe. It will be principally concerned with the interrelated topic, of the representation of the Middle Ages in modern literature and films. Each member of the seminar will undertake to study a book or α film whose story takes place in some part of medieval Europe and will consider it on two levels, first investigating the corresponding historical background, and then commenting on the way the author treated his or her historical subject. Emphasis will be given not to the presentation of an extended essay but on the active participation of the seminar members throughout the term. This will be attested through several short presentations/essays. PLEASE NOTE that, even though there are Greek translations for many of the works that will be discussed, a good understanding of the English bibliography is a prerequisite for this seminar. IMX 274 Eleni Sakellariou Mobility, communication and trade in Europe during the early Middle Ages (Lecture course) Since several decades, the starting point of every analysis of the early medieval European economy has been the work of Belgian historian Henri Pirenne, particularly his thesis on cities and trade. It revolves around questions such as the importance of early medieval trade, the influence of the settlement of Germanic people in Europe and of the expansion of the Arabs in the Mediterranean, of relations with Byzantium and the eastern Mediterranean, of the circulation of coinage. In recent years, progress in the methods of historical research has offered new insights into these issues. The network within which people, merchants, pilgrims, saints, holy relics, coins and wares moved, was, it now appears, more dense than previously believed. Its reconstitution revolutionizes our understanding of this crucial historical period, which bridges late antiquity with the peak of the medieval civilization from the late tenth century. Was it an era of universal and lasting crisis, or one of crisis in certain sectors, for example the demographic, and of restructuring in others, a process that led to the transition from the medieval world to that of the early modern period? The students

6 will answer this important question through their essays, by examining the multiple aspects of this crucial historical period.

7 Section of Modern and Contemporary History Modern and Contemporary History (INX) INX 333 Efi Avdela European Interwar and Greece (Seminar) What constitutes the interwar years in European and what in Greek history? What does it mean that the year 1918 had much less importance for Greece than the year 1922 or that the Depression had very different and delayed impact in this country or that political upheavals did not subvert its European alliances? The seminar will approach Greek history of the interwar period through the perspective of European history. Specific themes will be examined, such as the minorities issue, aspects of the economic crisis, the vicissitudes of democracy, transformations in social relations etc. Students will be asked to deliver several essays, on common or individual topics. INX 181 Eleftheria Zei European societies, 16 th -19 th centuries, part A (Lecture course) We will examine questions of social stratification, mobility and dynamics in 16 th century societies of the Italian peninsula, in 17 th and 18 th century French society, and in 19 th century English society through different types of documents and different historiographical approaches to the notion of social. INX 374 Eleftheria Zei Social history: questions of historiography (Seminar) Students will work upon texts on social history, and will discuss questions arising in European and international historiography, concerning the intercourse of social history with other fields (economic history, cultural history etc.).

8 Section of Archaeology and History of Art Classical Archaeology (KAR) KAR 149 Dimitris Bosnakis Intoduction to Greek Pottery and Vase Painting (Lecture course) Lectures examine the production and the evolution of Greek Pottery (Form and Function) and Vase Painting (techniques and styles, production centres) from the Geometric to the Hellenistic period ( BC). With references to the historical background the emphasis is more on the 6 th -5 th BC athenian workshops and artists and their broad trade network. Iconography of painted vases give us a unique visual account of life and mythology of the greek polis, providing rich archaeological data for various aspects of ancient culture. Byzantine Archaeology (BAR) BAR 349 Vassiliki Foskolou Pilgrimage in the Byzantine world: archaeological and historical evidence (Seminar) The seminar will deal with one of the most important aspects of public worship in Byzantium, i.e. pilgrimage. The journey to sacred places was widespread in the Christian world as early as the 4th century. In this seminar we will study the various aspects of the pilgrimage procedure, mainly through the material remains, i.e. the monumental complexes erected around sacred sites, and artefacts: objects of private devotion, memorabilia, votives etc. We will focus mainly on pilgrimage sites of the early Byzantine era, although weight will be also given to a number of important and well-known pilgrimage centers of the middle and late Byzantine

9 period. Knowledge of English language is necessary to attend the seminar and for the preparation of a seminar essay. History of Western Art (ΙΤD) ΙΤD 399 Eugenios Matthiopoulos Introduction to the Theory and Methods of Art History (Seminar) The seminar aims to familiarize the students with the basic theories, methods, concepts and terminology of the History of Art in the West, as they have been developed and applied from the 19th century until today: i.e. Formal analysis, Iconography and Iconology, Social History, Hermeneutics, Reception theory and Feminism.
