Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food" -- and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God. Gospel The Gospel according to Luke 15:11-32 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'" To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Ην δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἐν ἀγρῷ καὶ ὡς ἐρχόμενος ἤγγισε τῇ οἰκίᾳ, ἤκουσε συμφωνίας καὶ χορῶν, καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ἕνα τῶν παίδων ἐπυνθάνετο τί εἴη ταῦτα. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἥκει καὶ ἔθυσεν ὁ πατήρ σου τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν, ὅτι ὑγιαίνοντα αὐτὸν ἀπέλαβεν. ὠργίσθη δὲ καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν εἰσελθεῖν. ὁ οὖν πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐξελθὼν παρεκάλει αὐτόν. ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε τῷ πατρί ἰδοὺ τοσαῦτα ἔτη δουλεύω σοι καὶ οὐδέποτε ἐντολήν σου παρῆλθον, καὶ ἐμοὶ οὐδέποτε ἔδωκας ἔριφον ἵνα μετὰ τῶν φίλων μου εὐφρανθῶ ὅτε δὲ ὁ υἱός σου οὗτος, ὁ καταφαγών σου τὸν βίον μετὰ πορνῶν, ἦλθεν, ἔθυσας αὐτῷ τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτόν. ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τέκνον, σὺ πάντοτε μετ ἐμοῦ εἶ, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐμὰ σά ἐστιν εὐφρανθῆναι δὲ καὶ χαρῆναι ἔδει, ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου οὗτος νεκρὸς ἦν καὶ ἀνέζησε, καὶ ἀπολωλὼς ἦν καὶ εὑρέθη. 5 Your help is GREATLY needed for this Festival to be a great success, we would love to have as many of you as possible to come help in the preparations, even if you have no experience. The gracious women of wisdom as we call them, will be glad to show the younger generation how to prepare these foods. Men and women are welcomed. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our parishioners, young and old to get to know each other and show these fading skills. We ask if you would come and help prepare for the festival from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Every Tuesday and Wednesday. 7 If we compare ourselves to the stewards in the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), do we multiply the treasure for which we are responsible and for which we will be held accountable when the master returns? Or do we bury our treasure in the ground, offering back only that which was given to us? Jesus said As the Father has sent me, so I send you (John 20:21). At the end of our life, will He say to us, Well done good and faithful servant? Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone Following the Divine Liturgy, we will offer a memorial service for the repose of the souls of our brothers and sisters in Christ who have fallen asleep. You are encouraged to bring koliva and a list of names of those who have passed away to be memorialized on these days. If you are unable to make koliva and would like Vivi Kyrazis or Angie Tsigas to make you a plate, please call. Memorial services are not offered on the feast days of the Lord and the Theotokos, and the period between Saturday of Lazarus and the Sunday of Thomas. In order to offer a memorial service, one needs to contact the parish office and submit the date and the names of the ones to be commemorated. A Trisagion is a brief prayer which is read for our beloved departed. The Names are Commemorated at the Altar during the celebration of each Divine Liturgy, names of the living and the dead are com-memorated. Therefore your names must be in the altar prior to 9:30 a.m. If you are late your names will not be read. Please contact the church office if you have a Memorial or a Trisagion. Artoklasia or any other information you would like to see in the church bulletin. Every Thursday is the deadline for the bulletin Τα μνημόσυνα γίνονται όλο τον χρόνο εκτός τις εορτές του Κυρίου και της Θεοτόκου, καθώς επίσης από το Σαββάτο του Λαζάρου μέχρι την Κυριακή του Θωμά. 12 THE GREAT FAST In God's design for man's salvation, we believe that He has established the Christian Orthodox Church for a particularly sacred role in the life of mankind. Especially in the country, our Church has a specific mission in this the adopted land for some, but for many of us, the home of our birth. Have you ever wondered what exactly is the mission of our Church in this country? Perhaps it can best be defined as the way to enrich the American culture with the purity of Orthodox Christianity. There is here, however, a grave danger involved. America has been called the "Melting Pot". It is comprised of different religions and the complexities of ideas. The danger exists that we may very easily lose our own individual complexity and way of life. Our education lacks the elements of Orthodox philosophy and religion. Our associations in the work place and in recreation do not afford us the opportunity of understanding our Orthodox Catholic Tradition. Thus, many of our younger generations are ignorant concerning the Orthodox practices and duties. The Church which has always been paramount in Orthodox life, the center of the home, has become an extra-curricular activity. Duties to God and Church have been sadly neglected. In our universities today our youth are exposed to anything and everything except the will and commandments of God. Since Great Lent begins, February 27, 2017, we should focus on one very important expression of Orthodox Christian living - Fasting. Often, there will be parishioners who adamantly oppose the practice of fasting. They claim that fasting is: 1.) not a commandment; 2.) unnecessary and unimportant; 3.) detrimental to one's health; and 4.) difficult to observe. Let us take these questions one by one and analyze them.1.) Was fasting instituted by Christ? No! It existed long before Jesus. We find it recorded in history amongst the Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. In the Book of Genesis we read: "You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree;". Moses fasted forty days on Mount Sinai in preparation to receive the Lord's Commandments. The Prophet Elias fasted forty days in the wilderness in preparation to combat the idolatry of the Hebrews. pagans of Greece and Rome fasted prior to their sacrifices and maintained fast days on Tuesday and Thursdays. In the New Testament Christ fasted forty days and then set out on His public ministry. Jesus was tempted by the Devil three times and each time He denied Him. "Then the Devil came to Him and said, 'If you are God's Son, order these stones to turn into bread'." But He answered and said, "The scripture says, 'Man cannot live on bread alone, but needs every word that God speaks'." Christ did not institute fasting, but by His example He did sanction it. Even the Apostle first fasted and then set out to preach the Gospel. 2.) Is fasting necessary? Contrary to common belief, fasting is not voluntary but obligatory! Protestantism introduced the idea of voluntary fasting, but the result was simply the abolition of fasting. "The disciples of John fast frequently and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do 12

14 You cannot be to kind. Shun even to appear harsh in your treatment of each other. Never condemn each other, not even those whom you catch committing an evil deed. We condemn others only because we shun knowing ourselves. When we gaze at our own failings, we see such a morass of filth that nothing in another can equal it. That is why we turn away, and make much of the fault of others. Keep away from spilling of speech. Instead of condemning others, strive to reach inner peace. Keep silent, refrain from judgement. This will raise you above the deadly arrows of slander, insult, outrage, and will shield your glowing hearts. A DAILY LENTEN PRAYER The Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian Lord and Master of my life, Take from me the spirit of laziness, idle curiosity, vain talk and lust for power. Give me instead a spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love. Yes Lord and King, help me to see my own faults, and keep me from judging what others do. For You are blessed unto the ages of ages.
