Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH February 5, 2017 Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee Triodion Begins St Photios the Great - Patriarch of Constantinople Commemorated February 6 St Photios (later known as Photios the Great - Patriarch of Constantinople) was born around 820 AD to holy parents, who were confessors of the Faith. His parents were persecuted for defending icons against the iconoclasts and were exiled from Constantinople. His greatness was not only due to his defence of Orthodoxy against heretical papal practices, but also connected to his love and meekness. He vigorously opposed the addition of the filioque clause to the Nicene - Constantinopolitan Creed, and wrote On the Mystagogy of the Holy Spirit to preserve "the purity of our religion" and to hinder "those who chose to promote any other definition of dogma than the unanimous and common faith of the pious". This treatise became the pattern for all subsequent Byzantine anti-latin polemics. The filioque doctrine, espoused by Western Christians, has its source from Augustine of Hippo ( AD). Augustine had a fertile imagination, who could not shake off the Platonic influence of his youth. The doctrine of a 'double procession of the Holy Spirit' was first adopted in the West at the Synod of Toledo (447 AD), which appears to have followed Augustine's teachings. This addition was forbidden by the Fourth Ecumenical Council (451 AD). Here is the origin of the problem that was to agitate the Church for a thousand years. Contentions that the filioque has Biblical foundations have yet to be demonstrated. St. Photios was forced to become Patriarch of Constantinople, however he took his calling seriously and at once set to work as a man of God. One of his activities was to correct the error of pope Nicholas of Rome who enslaved the people of the West with threats of condemnation to hell for disobedience to the pope. Holy Photios wrote to Nicholas "Nothing is dearer that the Truth". In the same letter he noted "It is truly necessary that we observe all things, but above all, that which pertains to matters of Faith, in which but a small deviation represents a deadly sin". As a Father of the Church, St. Photios was also known for his brilliance and for his missionary zeal. He blessed St Cyril in his work of developing an alphabet for the Slavonic people, and for the later work of St Cyril and his brother St Methodios as missionaries to the Slavonic people. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted." 8 PREPARATION FOR GREAT LENT 2017 The Holy Season of Great Lent begins February 27th. It is a time for us to spiritually prepare our lives by evaluating who we are and who we hope to be as the Christian Orthodox people of God! In every aspect of Orthodox living, we recognize the changes that take place by reading the Scriptural passages of this time of the year, as well as, the liturgical changes that take place. The Church calls each of us to put forth a conscientious effort to live our Faith through prayer and fasting. Some of the things you should consider to accomplish in Great Lent are: 1. Prompt attendance at the Sunday Divine Liturgy (including Orthros); 2. Attending at least 3 of the 5 Friday night Salutation services, especially the first and the last; 3. Attending at least two Monday night Compline services, especially the first one on February 27; 4. Participating in at least two Wednesday night Presanctified Liturgies; 5. Prepare to receive Holy Communion at least four times during Great Lent and Holy Week; 6. Go to your spiritual father for Holy Confession; 7. Fast to the best of your ability, striving for a strict fast during the first week of Great Lent, avoiding meat during the entire Lenten season, keep a strict fast on Wednesday and Friday, and a strict fast all of Holy Week; 8. Pray everyday at home by reciting the Trisagion Prayers (Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal ) and the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim in the morning and evening; 9. Follow the daily Scriptural Reading Guide; 10. Attend services of Holy Week: At least one of the Bridegroom Services (evenings of Palm Sunday, Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday); Receive Holy Unction on Holy Wednesday; Attend services on the evening of Holy Thursday; Attend the three services on Good Friday; Attend the Divine Liturgy on Great and Holy Saturday morning; Attend the Resurrection Liturgy on Holy Saturday night; Attend the Sunday of Pascha Great Vespers in the morning 11. In addition, make a personal commitment during Great Lent by: Attending our Adult Religious Education Forum; Visiting the elderly, a hospital patient, or a shut-in (a list may be obtained from the Church Office); Give alms to the poor; Tithe your Stewardship offering during Great Lent This is to be your personal pact with God. If you put forth an honest effort to accomplish some of these Christian acts, you will experience Great Lent and its true purpose. May your Lenten journey uplift you to rejoice and praise God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! 8

Memorial services are not offered on the feast days of the Lord and the Theotokos, and the period between Saturday of Lazarus and the Sunday of Thomas. In order to offer a memorial service, one needs to contact the parish office and submit the date and the names of the ones to be commemorated. A Trisagion is a brief prayer which is read for our beloved departed. The Names are Commemorated at the Altar during the celebration of each Divine Liturgy, names of the living and the dead are com-memorated. Therefore your names must be in the altar prior to 9:30 a.m. If you are late your names will not be read. Please contact the church office if you have a Memorial or a Trisagion. Τα ονόματα τους μνημονεύονται στο ιε-ρό κατά την εκτέλεση της κάθε Θειας Λει-τουργίας, ονόματα ζωντανών και αποθανό-ντων μνημονεύονται. Ως εκ τούτου πρέπει η κατάσταση των ονομάτων αυτών να είναι στο ιερό πριν 9 :30 α.m. Εάν είναι αργότερα από 9:30 πμ τα ονόματα δεν θα διαβαστούν. Για την αρτοκλασία η άλλες πληροφορίες για σας θα έχουμε στης εκκλησίας το ( Μπουλετιν) ενημερωτικό περιοδικό της Κυ-ριακής. Added more pictures and information on the Churches web site. Cleaned all Altar boys robs. Disconnected all unnecessary items in Kitchen hall for removal Καθαρίσαμε όλες της ρόμπες για τα ιερό παιδιά. Received a 4 foot awning for the out side hall area. Donated Ξεκαθαρίσαμε την κουζίνα στην μεγάλη αίθουσα Removed all unwanted clutter in the hall rooms and the surrounding area of the Church.
