Α Εωθινόν ΣΤ The Holy Prophet Elias (Ilias) (Elijah) one of the greatest of the prophets and the first dedicated to virginity in the Old Testament he was born in Galaadian Thesbia (Tishbe) into the Levite tribe 900 years before the Incarnation of the Word of God. Sainted Epiphanios of Cyprus gives the following account about the birth of the Prophet Elias: "When Elias was born, his father Sobach saw in a vision, that handsome men greeted him, they swaddled him in fire and fed the fiery flame". The name Elias (the Lord's strength) given to the infant defined his whole life. From the years of his youth he dedicated himself to the One God, settled in the wilderness and spent his whole life in strict fasting, Divine-meditation and prayer. Called to prophetic service afront the Israelite king Ahab, the prophet became a fiery zealot of the true faith and piety. During this time the Israelite nation had fallen away from the faith of their fathers, they abandoned the One God and worshipped pagan idols, the worship of which was introduced by the impious king Jereboam. An especial advocate of idol-worship was the wife of king Ahab, the paganess Jezebel. The worship of the idol of Baal led the Israelites towards complete moral decay. Beholding the ruin of his nation, the Prophet Elias began to denounce king Ahab for impiety, and exhorting him to repent and turn to the True God. The king would not listen to him. The Prophet Elias then declared to him, that in punishment there would then be neither rain nor dew upon the ground, and the dryness would cease only through his prayer. And indeed, through the prayer of the prophet the heavens were closed, and there befell drought and famine throughout all the land. The nation suffered from the incessant heat and hunger. The Lord through His mercy, seeing the suffering of the people, was prepared to forgive all and send rain upon the earth, but did not want to annul the words of the Prophet Elias, sorrowed with the desire to turn about the hearts of the Israelites to repentance and return them to the true worship of God. Having saved the Prophet Elias from the hands of Jezebel, the Lord during this time of tribulation sent him into a secret place of the stream Horath. The Lord ordered rapacious ravens to bring food to the prophet, moving him to pity for the suffering nation. When the stream Horath dried up, the Lord sent the Prophet Elias to Sidonian Sarepta to a poor widow, who suffered together with her children in the expectation of death by starvation. At the request of the prophet she prepared him a bread with the last measure of flour and the remainder of the oil. Thereafter through the prayer of the Prophet Elias, flour and oil were not depleted in the home of the widow for all the duration of the famine. By the power of his prayer the prophet did another miracle he resuscitated the dead son of the widow. After the end of three years of drought the Merciful Lord sent the prophet to king Ahab to bring an end to the misfortune. The Prophet Elias gave orders to gather upon Mount Carmel all Israel and the pagan-priests of Baal. When the nation had gathered, the Prophet Elias proposed the building of two sacrificial altars: one for the pagan-priests of Baal, and the other for the Prophet Elias in the service of the True God. A Tone Let us worship the Word, O ye faithful, praising Him that with the Father and the Spirit is cobeginningless God, Who was born of a pure Virgin that we all be saved; for He was pleased to mount the Cross in the flesh that He assumed, accepting thus to endure death. And by His glorious rising, He also willed to resurrect the dead. Apolytikion for Prophet Elias The incarnate Angel, the Cornerstone of the Prophets, the second Forerunner of the Coming of Christ, the glorious Elias (Elijah), who from above, sent down to Elisha the grace to dispel sickness and cleanse lepers, abounds therefore in healing for those who honor him. Apolytikion of Sts. Constantine and Helen Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Thine apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us always in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Ἀδελφοί, ἐάν τις ἐν ὑμῖν πλανηθῇ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀληθείας, καὶ ἐπιστρέψῃ τις αὐτόν, γινωσκέτω ὅτι ὁ ἐπιστρέψας ἁμαρτωλὸν ἐκ πλάνης ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ σώσει ψυχὴν ἐκ θανάτου, καὶ καλύψει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν. You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Verse: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies my footstool. St. James' Universal Letter 5:10-20 BRETHREN, take as an example of suffering and patience the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we call those happy who were steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation. Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit. My brethren, if any one among you wanders from the truth and some one brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. The Gospel of Matthew 9:1-8 At that time, getting into a boat Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Rise and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" he then said to the paralytic -- "Rise, take up your bed and go home." And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

4 Για την δύναμη του καλού λόγου και την επιείκεια στους αμαρτωλούς. «Και παράγων ο Ιησούς εκείθεν είδεν άνθρωπον καθήμενον επί το τελώνιον, Ματθαίον λεγόμενον, και λέγει αυτώ ακολούθει μοι. Και αναστάς ηκολούθησεν αυτώ» (Μθ. 9, 9).Ποιος ήταν αυτός ο Ματθαίος, ο οποίος στη συνέ-χεια έγινε μεγάλος απόστολος και ευαγγελιστής; Ήταν τελώνης και μάζευε φόρους. Ο λαός μισούσε τους τελώνες και τους θεωρούσε αμαρτωλούς, διότι έκαναν πολλές αδικίες προσπαθώντας να κερδίσουν περισσό-τερα χρήματα για τον εαυτό τους. Και αυτόν τον άνθρωπο, που όλοι τον θεωρούσαν άθλιο και τον απο-στρέφονταν, ο Κύριος τον καλεί και του λέει: «Ακο-λούθει μοι».μόνο δύο λέξεις, και αυτές έκαναν επανάσταση στην ψυχή του τελώνη. Σηκώθηκε αμέσως, έριξε κά-τω τα χρήματά του και ακολούθησε τον Χριστό.Αυτό τι σημαίνει; Σημαίνει ότι το κάλεσμα του Χριστού μπορεί να προκαλέσει στην ψυχή του ανθρώ-που επανάσταση. Στους βίους των αγίων υπάρχουν πολλά παραδείγματα ανθρώπων, οι οποίοι επέστρε-ψαν στον Χριστό μετά από έναν λόγο του Ευαγγε-λίου. Από την πείρα μου γνωρίζω ότι ένας καλός λό-γος μπορεί να συνταράξει την ψυχή του αμαρτωλού, όπως συντάραξε την ψυχή του τελώνη Ματθαίου. Άν-θρωποι πνιγμένοι στην αμαρτία, κλέφτες, ληστές και φονιάδες, όταν τους λες έναν καλό λόγο και τους δεί-χνεις την αγάπη σου, την συγκατάβαση και τον σεβα-σμό στο πρόσωπό τους, συγκινούνται πάρα πολύ.και εμείς οι αμαρτωλοί, αδύναμοι και ασήμαντοι άνθρωποι με έναν λόγο αγάπης και σεβασμού μπορούμε να συγκινούμε και να συνταράζουμε τις καρδιές των αμαρτωλών, όπως ο Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός. Να το θυμόμαστε και ποτέ να μην κατακρίνουμε τους αμαρτωλούς, να μην τους στιγματίζουμε, αλλά να τους φερόμαστε με αγάπη, δείχνοντας σεβασμό στο πρόσω-πό τους, αν και οι ίδιοι δεν το σέβονται και το έχουν καταπατήσει.«και εγένετο αυτού ανακειμένου εν τη οικία, και ι-δού πολλοί τελώναι και αμαρτωλοί ελθόντες συνανέκειντο τω Ιησού και τοις μαθηταίς αυτού. Και ιδόντες οι Φαρισαίοι είπον τοις μαθηταίς αυτού διατί μετά των τελωνών και αμαρτωλών εσθίει ο διδάσκα-λος υμών; Ο δε Ιησούς ακούσας είπεν αυτοίς ου χρείαν έχουσιν οι ισχύοντες ιατρού, αλλ' οι κακώς έ-χοντες. Πορευθέντες δε μάθετε τι εστίν έλεον θέλω και ου θυσίαν. Ου γαρ ήλθον καλέσαι δικαίους, αλλ' αμαρτωλούς εις μετάνοιαν» (Μθ. 9, 10-13).Οι φαρισαίοι αγανακτούσαν για το ότι ο Κύριος Ιησούς Χριστός συναναστρεφόταν με τους αμαρτω-λούς, τις πόρνες και τους τελώνες. Περιφρονούσαν αυτούς τους ανθρώπους και θεωρούσαν ακαθαρσία να επικοινωνούν μαζί τους. Ποτέ δεν τους μιλούσαν, άλ-λα τους κακολογούσαν και τους κατέκριναν για την συμπεριφορά τους. Ξέρουμε ότι οι πόρνες έπλεναν τα πόδια του Κυ-ρίου Ιησού και τα σκούπιζαν με τα μαλλιά τους. Πο-τέ δεν έχουν ακούσει απ' Αυτόν κανένα λόγο επιπληκτικό. Τις συγχωρούσε και τις έλεγε: «Πορεύου και από του νυν μηκέτι αμάρτανε» (Ίω. 8, 11).Οι φαρισαίοι ήταν ανίκανοι να καταλάβουν αυτή την συμπεριφορά του Χρίστου και δυσφορούσαν για την στάση του α- πέναντι στους αμαρτωλούς. Αλλά ο Κύριος τους απαντούσε το εξής: «Ου χρείαν έχουσιν οι ισχύοντες ιατρού, αλλ' οι κακώς έχοντες» (Μθ. 9, 12). Ήλθε για να σώσει τους αμαρτωλούς. Με την α-γάπη του αγκάλιαζε κάθε αμαρτωλό και ζητούσε να τον οδηγήσει στην σωτηρία. Στους φαρισαίους που του παραπονέθηκαν είπε: «Πορευθέντες δε μάθετε τι ε-στίν έλεον θέλω και ου θυσίαν» (Μθ. 9, 13). Οι γραμ-ματείς και οι φαρισαίοι την ελπίδα της σωτηρίας τους στήριζαν στις θυσίες και τις προσευχές τους, και ο Κύριος λέει ότι δεν θέλει θυσία, αλλά έλεος, έλεος στους αμαρτωλούς.οι θυσίες χρειάζονταν στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, διό-τι προεικόνιζαν την Μόνη Θυσία πού πρόσφερε ο Κύ-ριος Ιησούς Χριστός πάνω στον Σταυρό του Γολγοθά. Όταν δόθηκε αυτή η Θυσία οι άλλες θυσίες έχα-σαν την σημασία και το νόημα τους, γι' αυτό δεν τις προσφέρουμε πια.τώρα ο Κύριος δεν περιμένει θυσία αλλά έλεος. Περιμένει από μας την ευσπλαχνία σε όλους τους αμαρτωλούς και τους περιφρονημένους. Η συμπεριφο-ρά μας προς αυτούς τους ανθρώπους να είναι ίδια μ' αυτήν που έδειξε Εκείνος. Να μην περιφρονούμε κα-νέναν, κανέναν να μην θεωρούμε κατώτερο από μας. Να βλέπουμε τις δικές μας αμαρτίες και όχι των άλ-λων, να αποκτήσουμε την ταπείνωση και την πραότη-τα, μιμούμενοι την δική Του ταπείνωση και πραότητα. Να αγαπάμε και να ευεργετούμε τους περιφρονημέ-νους και τους ταπεινωμένους, να τους προσφέρουμε πνευματική βοήθεια, δείχνοντας ενδιαφέρον για την σωτηρία τους.ο Κύριος λέει όταν κάνουμε τραπέζι να μην κα-λούμε ανθρώπους που μπορούν μετά να καλέσουν και εμάς στο γεύμα, αλλά τους πένητες και τους φτωχούς κουρελιάρηδες. Θέλει να το κάνουμε με αγάπη, και πάντα με συμπόνια να φερόμαστε στους ανθρώπους που ο κόσμος τους περιφρονεί, καλώντας τους βρωμιάρηδες και αχρείους.ο Κύριος μας έδωσε παράδοξες και θαυμαστές ε-ντολές. Είπε ότι δεν θέλει θυσία αλλά έλεος, έλεος σε όλους που το χρειάζονται. Ένα μεγάλο, αμέτρητο πλήθος ανθρώπων περιμένουν κάποιον να τους δείξει ευσπλαχνία, να τους πει ένα λόγο αγάπης και παρηγο-ριάς. Περιμένουν οι άνθρωποι κάποιον να τους δείξει τρυφερότητα και να τους βοηθήσει, και αντί αυτού συναντούν στους γύρω τους ψυχρότητα και αδιαφο-ρία. Αλλά πάνω από αυτά και σε μερικούς ακόμα χρι-στιανούς βλέπουν περιφρόνηση και αποστροφή.στα μάτια του Θεού αυτός, που έτσι συμπεριφέρε-ται στους αδελφούς του, πράττει βαριά αμαρτία. Σε ό-λα πρέπει να είμαστε μιμητές του Κυρίου και να ακολουθούμε το παράδειγμα Του. Ας Τον ακολουθήσου-με λοιπόν και ας μην θεωρούμε τον εαυτό μας ανώτε-ρο από τον πλησίον, όποιος και να είναι αυτός - κλέ-φτης, φονιάς ή ληστής, διότι στα μάτια του Θεού μπο-ρεί να είμαστε χειρότεροι από αυτόν.να θυμόμαστε πάντα πώς συμπεριφερόταν ο Κύ-ριος στους αμαρτωλούς, πώς φέρθηκε στον τελώνη Ματθαίο και πώς φερόταν σε άλλους τελώνες, πόρνες και αμαρτωλούς και προκαλούσε μ' αυτό την οργή των φαρισαίων. Να μην είμαστε σαν τους φαρισαίους, αλλά να μιμούμαστε τον Κύριο μας Ιησού Χριστό. Α-μήν.

5 "Upon whichever shalt come down upon it fire from the heavens, that one wilt be shewn to have the True God, said the Prophet Elias, and all shalt be obliged to worship Him, and if not invoking Him shalt be given over to death". The prophets of Baal rushed off first to offer sacrifice: they called out to the idol from morning till evening, but in vain the heavens were silent. Towards evening the holy Prophet Elias built up his sacrificial altar from 12 stones the number of the tribes of Israel; he placed the sacrifice upon the fire-wood, gave orders to dig a ditch around the altar and commanded that the sacrifice and the fire-wood be soaked with water. When the ditch had filled with water, the fiery prophet turned to God with a prayer and asked, that the Lord send down fire from the heavens to teach the wayward and obdurate Israelite people and turn their hearts to Himself. Through the prayer of the prophet there came down fire from the heavens and it fell upon the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and even the water. The people fell down to the ground, crying out: "In truth the Lord is the One God and there is no other besides Him!". Then the Prophet Elias had put to death all the pagan-priests of Baal and he began to pray for the sending down of rain. Through his prayer the heavens opened and there came down an abundant rain, watering the parched earth. King Ahab acknowledged his error and repented his sins, but his wife Jezebel threatened to kill the prophet of God. The Prophet Elias fled into the kingdom of Judea and, grieving over his failure to eradicate idol-worship, he asked of God his death. An Angel of the Lord came before him, strengthened him with food and commanded him to go upon a long journey. The Prophet Elias went for forty days and nights and, having arrived at Mount Horeb, he settled in a cave. Here after a terrible storm, an earthquake and a burst of flame the Lord appeared "in a quiet wind" (3 Kings 19: 12) and revealed to the grieving prophet, that He preserved seven thousand faithful servants who were not worshippers of Baal. The Lord commanded the Prophet Elias to anoint Elisei (Elisha) unto prophetic service. Because of his fiery zeal for the Glory of God the Prophet Elias was taken up alive to Heaven on a fiery chariot. The Prophet Elisei (Elisha) began with the testimony of the ascent of the Prophet Elias to the heavens on a fiery chariot and received together with his fallen-down mantle (cloak) a gift of prophetic spirit twice as great, than the Prophet Elias had possessed. According to the tradition of Holy Church, the Prophet Elias will be a Fore Runner of the Terrible Second Coming of Christ upon the earth and during the time of preaching will be a sign of bodily death. The life of the holy Prophet Elias is recorded in the Old Testament books (3 Kings; 4 Kings; Sirach/Ecclesiastes 48: 1-15; 1 Maccabees 2: 58). At the time of the Transfiguration [Preobrazhenie] the Prophet Elias conversed with the Saviour upon Mount Thabor (Tabor) (Mt. 17: 3; Mk. 9: 4; Lk. 9: 30). For the day of the fiery ascent to Heaven of the Prophet Elias his veneration in the Church of Christ was constant over the centuries. The Russian Orthodox Church venerates the Prophet Elias among the saints. The first church, built at Kiev under prince Igor, was in the name of the Prophet Elias. After Baptism the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles princess Ol'ga (Comm. 14 July) built a temple of the holy Prophet Elias in his native region, at the village of Vibuta. The iconographic tradition portrays the Prophet Elias rising up on a chariot with fiery wheels, which are encircled on all sides with flames and harnessed to four winged horses.
