WEEKLY MESSAGE We live in a consumer society. Everywhere we turn, we are faced with options. It doesn t matter what the general topic, our society seems to have perfected the art of consumerism by promising a product just for us. American Christianity has fallen into the same trap, as consumer competition has created over 43,000 denominations all clamoring for our business. Different Churches offer a different worship style and different programs all as a means supposedly to help us find Christ. Unfortunately, it can have the opposite effect. Most American Christians choose which Church they attend as if shopping in the super market. Shall we attend early or late, short or long, contemporary or traditional, focused on young adults or elderly? These options have less to do with finding Christ and more to do with our own desires. Two weeks ago, I made a statement about the truth of Orthodox Christianity that has been the center of much conversation and debate within our parish. I stated that I believed we had to be Orthodox Christian to be saved. This statement has caused several of our families a great deal of concern, so I would like to clarify what I meant by, We have to be Orthodox to be saved. Allow me to clarify two points. First, being Orthodox is not the same thing as calling ourselves Orthodox. It is in fact possible to call ourselves Orthodox while not actually being Orthodox in the way we believe or live. Second and maybe more important, when Orthodox Christians and non Orthodox Christians use the word saved we do not mean the same thing. Depending on what we mean by the word, saved, it is possible that Orthodox Christians may not be saved, and that non Orthodox Christians may be saved. It would be better if we didn t even use the word since it can mean different things to different people. Instead it would be better to speak of being healthy and being healed. God said, He who desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. (Mark 8.34) As fallen human beings we tend to prefer the opposite. We exalt ourselves, avoid our cross and follow our own advice. The Orthodox Christian way of life is designed by God to heal this sickness within us. Through a life of prayer, fasting, almsgiving and the sacraments, we are healed by God little by little as Saint Paul said, Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4.16) Do we have to be Orthodox to be healed? If we were suffering from a serious illness wouldn t we want the best doctor? I guess the best answer is the Orthodox Church has the best medicine that can heal us. It was, after all established by Jesus Christ, the Physician of our Souls. Instead of choosing a church based upon worship times or styles, we should choose a church based on whether we can be healed. The Orthodox Christian way of life can heal us. We can t be sure about anything else.

EPISTLE Romans 5:1-10 B rethren, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received our reconciliation. GOSPEL Matthew 6:22-33 T he Lord said, "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well." HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.
Resurrectional Apolytikion When you descended to the realm of death, You as life immortal, rendered to Hades a mortal blow by Your all-radiant divinity. And when You, from infernal depths and the darkness below, did raise the dead, all the hosts of heaven s powers did proclaim and cry out, O life-giving Christ and our God we give glory. Of the Church As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion O Protection of Christians unshamable, mediation with the Creator immovable, we sinners beg you, do not despise the voices of our prayers, but anticipate, since you are good, and swiftly come unto our aid as we cry out to you with faith: Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who defend now and ever those who honor you.
Saints and Feasts of the Week ST SAMSON THE HOSPITABLE Saint Samson was from Rome and flourished during the reign of St Justinian the Great. Being a physician, he came to Constantinople, where he so distinguished himself for his virtue and his love for the sick and the poor that Patriarch Menas ordained him priest. The Emperor Justinian was healed by him, and out of gratitude built him a large hospital, which was afterwards known as "The Hospice of Samson." St Samson is one of the Holy Unmercenaries. SYNAXIS OF THE TWELVE HOLY APOSTLES: PETER, ANDREW, JAMES & JOHN THE SONS OF ZEBEDEE, PHILLIP, BARTHOLOMEW, THOMAS, MATTHEW, JAMES THE SON OF ALPHAEUS, JUDE THE BROTHER OF JAMES, SIMON & MATTHIAS The names of the Twelve Apostles are these: Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, the First-called; James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, who was also the Evangelist and Theologian; Philip, and Bartholomew (see also June 11); Thomas, and Matthew the publican, who was also called Levi and was an Evangelist; James the son of Alphaeus, and Jude (also called Lebbaeus, and surnamed Thaddaeus), the brother of James, the Brother of God; Simon the Cananite ("the Zealot"), and Matthias, who was elected to fill the place of Judas the traitor.
