2 WEEKLY MESSAGE This week s Ask Father sermon will answer the question, When did the Church begin to baptize babies? The simple answer is that the Church has always baptized babies as part of our household. In the Acts of the Apostle, we hear about the household of the first Greek convert named Lydia. Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. And when she and her household were baptized. (Acts ) When the angels released Saints Paul and Silas from prison, Saint Paul said to the guard, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (Acts 16.31) When it comes to our children, the Church has always considered them to be a part of our household, and worthy of the grace of God. The Church does not limit such understandings to baptism. From the moment the baby is born, prayers are offered by the Church for the mother and the newborn child, always with the understanding that the child is part of a Christian household. How could the Church ignore the reality that our children are a real part of our life? The Church could never deny the grace of God to children, merely because they are too young to understand God. Let s face it, as adults we cannot fully understand God. There is however a difficulty for the Church when we forget the truth of the Christian household. We need to take seriously our role as parents. Are we leading a Christian household? Do we live as if we believe God has joined us to Himself in baptism? Are we genuinely Orthodox in our daily lives and the lives of our household? If we are honest, many times we limit baptism to some nice Greek tradition that we use to honor our heritage. I m often told, My grandparents were baptized in Saint Nicholas, my parents were baptized in Saint Nicholas, I was baptized in Saint Nicholas and I want my baby baptized in Saint Nicholas. What is even worse are those moments when we want to baptize our children without ever expecting to attend Church after the baptism, as if the baptism was just some cultural ritual to make Yiayia happy. I have even been approached by some Greek parents who call to schedule a baptism even though they attend non-orthodox Churches. We need to return to a healthier understanding of baptism. Baptism makes no sense for children who are not living in Orthodox Christian homes. Saint Paul never said, Sure! Don t worry about living the faith. At least your children are baptized. Neither should we. All in all, Orthodox Christianity, as we have been discussing all summer, is a life rather than a name we call ourselves. From the time we are born into Christian households, that life begins in earnest. By the way, here are the specific blessing services the Church includes for children in a Christian household, and all include prayers for the children AND the family. 4 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Πρὸς Ρωμαίους 10:1-10 Ἀ δελφοί, ἡ μὲν εὐδοκία τῆς ἐμῆς καρδίας καὶ ἡ δέησις πρὸς τὸν Θὸν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν εἰς σωτηρίαν. Καὶ ἐμβὰς εἰς πλοῖον διεπέρασεν καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν πόλιν. Η ΘΕΙΑ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ Η Θεία Κοινωνία είναι ένα από τα Μυστήρια της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας και προσφέρεται αποκλειστικά σε βαπτισμένους ή/και χρισμένους Ορθόδοξους Χριστιανούς, οι οποίοι έχουν προετοιμαστεί να λάβουν το Σώμα και το Αίμα του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού. Καθώς προσέρχεστε να κοινωνήσετε, σας παρακαλούμε να ακολουθείτε τις οδηγίες των Συμβούλων της Ενορίας και λοιπών ταξιθετών. Σας θυμίζουμε επίσης πως το Αντίδωρο προσφέρεται στο τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας και μπορούν να το λάβουν όλοι.

5 EPISTLE Romans 10:1-10 B rethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, "Who will ascend into heaven?" (that is, to bring Christ down) or "Who will descend into the abyss?" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. GOSPEL Matthew 8:28-34, 9:1 A t that time, when Jesus came to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one would pass that way. And behold, they cried out, "What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?" Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine." And he said to them, "Go." So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

Resurrectional Apolytikion When the tidings of the Resurrection from the glorious Angel was proclaimed unto the Women Disciples and our ancestral sentence also had been abolished, to the Apostles with boasting did they proclaim that death is vanquished evermore and Christ our God has risen from the dead and granted to the world His great mercy. Of the Church As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion O Protection of Christians unshamable, mediation with the Creator immovable, we sinners beg you, do not despise the voices of our prayers, but anticipate, since you are good, and swiftly come unto our aid as we cry out to you with faith: Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who defend now and ever those who honor you.

7 Saints and Feasts of the Week OLGA, EQUAL-TO-THE- APOSTLES Saint Olga in her youth became the wife of Igor, Great Prince of Kiev, who ruled during the 10th century. After her husband's death, she ruled capably, and was moved to accept the Faith of Christ. When she traveled to Constantinople to receive Holy Baptism, the Emperor asked her to marry him. She said she could not do this before she was baptized and asked him to be her Godfather at the font, which he agreed to do. After she was baptized, receiving the name of Helen, she told him that now he was her father, through holy Baptism, and that not even among the heathen was it heard of a man marrying his daughter. Gracefully accepting to be outwitted by her, he sent her back to her land with priests and sacred texts and holy icons. Although her son Svyatoslav remained a pagan, she planted the seed of faith in her grandson Vladimir. She reposed in peace in 969. VLADIMIR, EQUAL-TO-THE-APOSTLES OF KIEV Grandson of St Olga, St Vladimir ascended the throne of Kiev in 980. Though a zealous idolater, he accepted the Christian Faith, and completely changed his ways. He was baptized in Cherson in 988, receiving the name Basil; he came forth from the font not only healed of a blindness lately afflicting him, but also from being warlike, he became peaceable, and exceedingly godly. Whereas his grandmother had refused marriage with the Emperor in Constantinople, he married Anna, sister of the Emperors Basil and Constantine. Diligently seeking to spread Christianity throughout his realm, he destroyed the idols (having the chief diety Perun scourged and then cast into the Dnieper River), and summoned all his subjects to Holy Baptism. He reposed in peace in EUPHEMIA THE GREAT MARTYR Saint Euphemia lived in the 3rd century and was born in Chalcedon. From her youth she dedicated her life to Christ and practiced the virtues of prayer, fasting and chastity. The governor of Chalcedon, Priscus, had made a decree that all of the inhabitants of the city take part in sacrifices to the pagan god Ares. Euphemia was discovered with other Christians hiding in a house refusing to sacrifice. Euphemia was separated from her companions in the hope that she betray Christ. She was promised worldy riches but refused to deny Christ. She was subjected to harsh torments, including the wheel, but the wheel miraculously stopped and an Angel of the Lord ministered to her wounds. The govenor then ordered that she be cast into a fiery furnace. Two soldiers, Victor and Sosthenes, led her to the furnace, but seeing to fearsome angels in the flames, refused to carry out the order of the governor and became believers. Confessing that they too were Christians, they were cast into the arena to be eaten by wild beasts. Saint Euphemia, cast into the fire by other soldiers, remained unharmed. Finally, they sentenced her to be devoured by wild beasts at the circus. Before her martyrdom, St Euphemia implored God to deem her worthy to suffer terribly for His Name but when she was cast into the arena, none of the beasts attacked her. Finally, one of the bears gave her a small wound on the leg, from which flowed the pure blood of the martyr, and immediately the holy Great Martyr Euphemia gave her spirit to the Lord. During this time there was an earthquake, and both the guards and the spectators ran in terror, so that the parents of the saint were able to take up her body and reverently bury it. ΑΓΙΑ ΕΥΦΗΜΙΑ Η Αγία Ευφημία έζησε και μαρτύρησε κατά τους χρόνους του αυτοκράτορα Διοκλητιανού. Γεννήθηκε στη Χαλκηδόνα από οικογένεια θεοσεβή. Οι γονείς της φρόντισαν ώστε η θυγατέρα τους να αναπτύξει κάθε χριστιανική αρετή. Η Ευφημία εξελίχθηκε σε άνθρωπο με σπάνια χαρίσματα και δυνατό χριστιανικό φρόνημα, το οποίο επέδειξε όταν ο ειδωλολάτρης ανθύπατος της Μικράς Ασίας Πρίσκος διέταξε να παρευρεθούν όλοι οι κάτοικοι της Χαλκηδόνας σε γιορτή, την οποία οργάνωνε προς τιμή του θεού των ειδωλολατρών Άρη. Τότε η Ευφημία αποφάσισε μαζί με άλλους χριστιανούς να απέχει από τη γιορτή των ειδωλολατρών και για το λόγο αυτό συνελήφθη και φυλακίσθηκε. Κατά τη διάρκεια της αιχμαλωσίας της, οι εχθροί του Χριστού προσπαθούσαν με κάθε τρόπο να πείσουν την Αγία να αρνηθεί την πίστη της και να ασπασθεί τα είδωλα. Όταν συνειδητοποίησαν πως η Ευφημία δεν επρόκειτο να αλλάξει την πίστη της με τους λόγους, τη βασάνισαν φριχτά. Όμως με τη θεία χάρη, η Αγία δεν έπαθε τίποτα από τα βασανιστήρια. Τελικά οι δήμιοι, την έριξαν σε άγρια θηρία και η Ευφημία βρήκε το θάνατο από μία αρκούδα.

ST NICHOLAS KITCHEN St Nicholas Kitchen is an outreach ministry providing a hot meal and fellowship to those in need.
