WEEKLY MESSAGE It has been said that all good things must come to an end. On November 1, a chapter of my ministry will end as I relinquish the duties as Interim Dean of St. Nicholas Cathedral. Having served in Tampa Bay for a quarter of century, I always had the highest respect and regard for the Cathedral as the mother church of Florida, and was blessed to interact over the years in various services, but especially the Epiphany. It was a spiritual blessing for me to be one of the five priests to celebrate when His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew honored the 100 th year of the Cathedral. It was also November 1, in 2013, when although retired from parish service, I was asked by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta to serve as the pastor of St. Nicholas until a new priest would be assigned. What was to be a temporary assignment became a three-year tenure! During these years, there were times of sorrow and pain; times of healing and joy; and times of fellowship and celebration. I have been privileged and honored, through the grace of God, to have served this unique parish. I am grateful to His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios for His confidence and support in allowing me to serve the parishioners of this traditional parish. (I am reminded of a visitor to the Cathedral, who upon leaving remarked, Now, this is a church! ) Thank you to all those with whom I have personally worked throughout the past three years; you have been a blessing! Although I will retire the position as Dean, I will not be far, enjoying the Cathedral and praying for continued progress and growth. Now the future is the question! Once again, on November 1, a new Dean will begin his ministry to the Cathedral. There will be change, which always produces unrest, but it will be a divine unrest that will keep the Cathedral going into the future with a new spiritual leader, and we are assured that you will embrace Father Athanasios Haros, Presvytera Vassi and their son, Haralambos (Harry) with open arms and make them a welcomed part of the St. Nicholas Cathedral family. Father Athanasios was born in Chicago, IL and raised in Denver, CO. He received a BA in Music from the University of Colorado College of Music and MDiv from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. Prior to attending Holy Cross, he served as the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries and Parish Administrator at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Denver. Following his ordination, he served as the Assistant Priest at St. Demetrios in Weston, MA in 2007, prior to being assigned as Proistamenos of the Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church in Florence, SC. On a personal note, on an annual trip to Boston with the 2008 graduates of Greek School of Holy Trinity in Clearwater, while serving the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Cross chapel, a young priest stood next to me at the altar, who had just been assigned to the Atlanta Metropolis, Fr. Athanasios Haros. I welcomed him to the Metropolis and wished him a good and productive ministry. Little did we know that in future years we would again stand together at the Holy Altar. While in Florence, Father Athanasios established Be Transfigured Ministries, an Internet ministry which publishes, produces and promotes online Orthodox Christian ministries. This ministry has a blog, audio podcast and YouTube channel which promotes Bible studies, a weekly sermon series and other special events in the life of the Orthodox Church. Presvytera is also a graduate of Holy Cross and maintains an Internet ministry, In Service and Love, and serves as the President of the Sisterhood of Presvyteres and Diakonisses for the Metropolis of Atlanta. It is my hope and prayer that all of you will join me in welcoming the new Proistamenos and his family on Sunday, November 6. Let us especially encourage our youth to take advantage of the various progressive religious and fellowship programs of the Cathedral that the new Dean, assisted ably by Father Sampson, will introduce. Continue, as you have with me, with your love and Christian warmth, to walk hand-in-hand into the future with Father Athanasios, as he brings a positive vision for progress and continued growth.

Resurrectional Apolytikion When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You. For The Saints Your Martyrs, O Lord, were worthily awarded by You the crowns of incorruption, in that they contested for You our immortal God. Since they possessed Your power, they defeated the tyrants, dashing the demons' powerless displays of defiance. O Christ God, at their fervent entreaties, save our souls. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion O Protection of Christians unshamable, mediation with the Creator immovable, we sinners beg you, do not despise the voices of our prayers, but anticipate, since you are good, and swiftly come unto our aid as we cry out to you with faith: Hurry to intercession, and hasten to supplication, O Theotokos who defend now and ever those who honor you.
EPISTLE II Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9 B rethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands. I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows-and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. GOSPEL Luke 16:19-31 T he Lord said, "There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazaros, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazaros in his bosom. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazaros to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazaros in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses, and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if some one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to them, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.' ". HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.
Saints and Feasts of the Week COSMAS & DAMIAN THE HOLY UNMERCENARIES OF ASIA, & THEIR MOTHER THEODOTA These Saints were from Asia Minor. After the death of their father, their Christ-loving mother Theodota reared them in piety and in all manner of virtue, and had them instructed in every science, especially that of medicine. This became their vocation, and they went about healing every illness and malady, bestowing healing freely on both men and beasts alike; because of this, they are called "Unmercenaries." And thus, having completed the course of their life, they reposed in peace. DAVID THE RIGHTEOUS OF EVIA Saint David of Euboea was the abbot of Theotokos Varnakova monastery ( ) and later he left for Rovies, North Evia. When little David was three years old, one evening he saw St John the Baptist in a vision. St John took his hand and they went together to a chapel dedicated to his memory. There, the saint went into his icon, while the child got down on his knees in front of it. David s parents, were looking for him for six days and nights. On the sixth day, David s father went with some villagers to that chapel to serve the Vespers and pray to the Saint for his child. When they arrived, they were surprised to see little David on his knees in front of the icon of St John. His face was glowing with a celestial light. They then all understood that this child was not like the other children. He became one of the enlightened teachers of the Nation, offering much in the education of the enslaved Greeks, and at the same time a Saint of the Church, is credited with many miracles. His fragrant relics are kept in the Catholicon of the monastery in Rovies, as well as the censer and stole.
