2 FATHER JAMES MESSAGE I ve always been fascinated by puzzles, even though I could never solve the Rubik s Cube. A couple of my favorite games to play on my ipad are the jigsaw puzzles and a game called Flow Free, a simple game of connecting colored dots on a graft playing board. The early levels of the game are easy, with huge colored dots, which I can usually connect perfectly, but as the game progresses, the dots get smaller and increase in number. I enjoy playing these games because they stimulate my thought and attention process. As we engage in playing the game of living, the early years are easy, but as we continue, life becomes more difficult. We are blessed, however, to have the Church to guide us in putting the pieces of the puzzle of life together and to stimulate our Orthodox lifestyle. This is especially true for our youth, since living can be easy for them, but as they grow, new challenges appear and it becomes more difficult to put the pieces together or to connect the dots. To keep the youth living a Christ-centered life, the Church can be the most important tool to stimulate them. Opening the New Testament to the Gospel of St. John 1:38, John and Andrew meet Jesus as a passer-by on a crowded street and in order to get to know Him better, they ask to see where He lives. Rabbi (Teacher), where are you going? Jesus very casually invites them to come and see. To the question, Rabbi, where do You live? Jesus answers, in you. Jesus is telling us, as well, that He prefers to live in us, because we have been outfitted to contain God. He is saying to us over and over again that He waits to take up residence in us and has claimed us as His children. He will not rest until he has entered our heart to make it His throne. Thus, we are candidates for Heaven and God s presence. Take that away, and we are as common as the grave. If we let God in our hearts, we let Heaven in: His power, peace, love and joy become our riches. The new Ecclesiastical year began on September 1 st, marking the beginning of reviving the various youth ministries of the parish: religious and cultural education, Greek language school, dance, as well as HOPE/JOY, GOYA and YAL. There are also a couple of new ministries namely, the Little Lambs, for children 40 days to VPK and the Special Treasures Ministry, for youth with special needs. It is the goal of the Church that the young people will attend the educational programs of the parish, to come and see and learn. St. Nicholas Cathedral and I are fortunate to have Fr. Sampson dedicating his efforts toward our youth; however, we need parents to encourage and support their children s spiritual quest to learn the Orthodox faith in this new Ecclesiastical year. This is why we are obligated to pursue our Greek Orthodox Christian way of life and pass it to the next generation. The mission of your youth ministries is to prepare our youth to become dwelling places of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christ wants to settle down in them and live there yearround. He is not a winter resident, a snowbird! He Who had nowhere to lay His head seeks to make His home in them. This is why He has chosen to come in the simple form of bread and wine in Holy Communion that is offered to our youth before they attend Sunday School, fortifying them to learn. When we allow Christ to dominate life, from the formative years, then all positive spiritual things can happen for them, for us and for the Church. It is Christ-filled people that must be the stewards and caretakers of His earthly Vineyard to generate progress and prosperity. This is why the Cathedral s mission is to teach our youth to become leaders of the great and exalted legacy called Orthodoxy. Only the Church can provide the true resources to prepare them properly. Through the youth ministries of the Church, the pieces of the puzzle of life are connected correctly. This is a great commission and a great challenge from Christ and we invite the youth to learn in love and in His name for His glory. Come and see!

5 EPISTLE Galatians 2:16-20 B rethren, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 T he Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." WEDNESDAY SERVICES Please join us every Wednesday for our weekly evening service at 6:00 pm. 6 Saints and Feasts of the Week EUMENIUS THE WONDERWORK- ER, BISHOP OF GORTYNIA This Saint took up the monastic life from his youth, and later became Bishop of Gortynia in Crete. He travelled to Rome, and to Thebes in Upper Egypt, where through his prayers he ended a drought; there also, after working many miracles, he reposed in deep old age. His holy relics were returned to Gortynia and buried at the place called Raxos. THECLA THE PROTOMARTYR & EQUAL TO THE APOSTLES This saint was from the city of Iconium. When she was 18 years of age, she was instructed in the Faith of Christ and the hope of the resurrection by the Apostle Paul, whom also she followed, forsaking her betrothed and espousing a life of virginity for the sake of the Heavenly Bridegroom. Having preached Christ in various cities and suffered many things, she reposed in Seleucia of Cilicia at the age of 90.
7 THANKING GOD As Orthodox Christians, we are called to a new way of seeing things a new way of life. Stewardship is obedience to the greatest commandment to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. We are called to bring ourselves and others to commit our lives to Jesus Christ in such a way that leads us to the joy of knowing him personally and profoundly. Thus, the question is not, How much do I give to stay in the club? or What are the dues? The real question we need to ask ourselves is How do I thank God for my many blessings? LEAVE THE REST TO GOD You cannot do everything, but you can do something. God wants you to do your best and leave the rest to him. Saint Theofan said, Exert all your strength, but rest your concern for success on God. The Lord doesn t expect any more from us than what we have to offer. But He does expect us to be faithful and that we do our very best for Him. We do our best and leave the rest to Him. 17 TORNADOS DAMAGE IONIAN VILLAGE The site of Ionian Village in Vartholomio, Ilia, Greece, sustained extensive damage from fierce tornados that went through the area on September 8. Ionian Village is the international Summer Camp ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in Greece. Its programs had concluded earlier in August and there were no campers or staff present. There are no reported casualties. The buildings and facilities of the campus have suffered substantial damage, and hundreds of trees have been either toppled or completely uprooted. While the Chapel of Saint Iakovos sustained only minor exterior damage, the area known as The Pines, the home to the unique Ionian Village Orthodox Life program, has been mostly destroyed. Extensive damage was also incurred at other major areas including the pool, the camper cabins, the cafeteria, the arts & crafts area, and the area behind the camp where the camp animals lived. In response to the outpouring of support and offers of assistance from many campers, parents and faithful stewards of Ionian Village, the Archdiocese had initiated a fundraising campaign to assist in the rebuilding efforts. All funds donated to this campaign will go directly to the clearing, repair and rebuilding of the Ionian Village campsite. To make a donation to the Ionian Village rebuilding campaign, visit or send a check to Greek Orthodox Archdiocese/Ionian Village Rebuilding Fund, 8 East 79th Street, New York, NY DIVER APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE Epiphany, a holy Feast Day for our Church and a major event for our parish, is just four months away. Time for divers to start preparing! Download the 2017 Epiphany Diver application packet by visiting our website at Applications are due on Thursday, December 1, 2016, with no exception.
