John K. Lardas *** ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH OF THE WTC ΝΑΟΣ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΟΥ ΤΟΥ WTC Ήχος Δ Εωθινόν Ε Ἦταν στὴν αὐλὴ τῆς Καλύβης του o Γέροντας (Παΐσιος), ὅταν τὸν ἐπισκέφθηκε κάποιο πνευματικό του τέκνο. Ἐπανελάμβανε συνεχῶς ἀπὸ τὴν καρδιά του: «Δόξα σοὶ ὁ Θεός», πάλιν καὶ πολλάκις. Σὲ μία στιγμὴ ὁ Γέροντας τοῦ εἶπε: «Ἀχρηστεύεται κανεὶς μὲ τὴν καλὴ ἔννοια»; - Ποιός, Γέροντα; - Ἥσυχα καθόμουν στὸ Κελλί μου, ἦρθε καὶ μὲ παλάβωσε. Ὡραία περνοῦν ἐπάνω. - Τί συμβαίνει, Γέροντα; - Θὰ σοὺ πῶ, ἀλλὰ μὴν τὸ πεῖς σὲ κανέναν. Τοῦ διηγήθηκε τότε τὸ ἕξης: «Εἶχα γυρίσει ἀπὸ τὸν κόσμο, ὅπου εἶχα βγεῖ γιὰ ἕνα ἐκκλησιαστικὸ θέμα (μὲ τὸ μακαρίτη Τρίτση). Τὴν Τρίτη, κατὰ ἡ ὥρα 10 τὸ πρωί, ἤμουν μέσα στὸ Κελί μου καὶ ἔκανα τὶς Ὧρες. Ἀκούω χτύπημα στὴν πόρτα καὶ μία γυναικεία φωνὴ νὰ λέει: «Δι' εὐχῶν τῶν ἁγίων Πατέρων ἠμῶν». Σκέφθηκα: «Πῶς βρέθηκε γυναίκα μέσα στὸ Ὅρος;». Ἐν τούτοις ἐνιωσα μία θεία γλυκύτητα μέσα μου καὶ ρώτησα: - Ποιὸς εἶναι; - Ἡ Εὐφημία! (ἀπαντᾶ). - Σκεφτόμουν, «ποιὰ Εὐφημία; Μήπως καμιὰ γυναίκα ἔκανε καμιὰ τρέλα καὶ ἦρθε μὲ ἀνδρικὰ στὸ Ὅρος; Τώρα τί νὰ κάνω;». Ξαναχτυπᾶ. Ρωτάω: «Ποιὸς εἶναι;». «Ἡ Εὐφημία», ἅπαντα καὶ πάλι. Σκέφτομαι καὶ δὲν ἀνοίγω. Στὴν τρίτη φορὰ ποὺ χτύπησε, ἄνοιξε μόνη της ἡ πόρτα, ποὺ εἶχε σύρτη ἀπὸ μέσα. Ἄκουσα... βήματα στὸν διάδρομο. Πετάχτηκα ἀπὸ τὸ Κελί μου καὶ βλέπω μία γυναίκα μὲ μανδήλα. Τὴν συνόδευε κάποιος, ποὺ ἐμοίαζε μὲ τὸν Εὐαγγελιστὴ Λουκᾶ, ὁ ὁποῖος ἐξαφανίσθηκε. Παρ ὅλο ποῦ ἤμουν σίγουρος ὅτι δὲν εἶναι τοῦ πειρασμοῦ, γιατί λαμποκοποῦσε, τὴν ρώτησα ποιὰ εἶναι -Ἡ μάρτυς Εὐφημία, (ἀπαντᾶ). -Ἂν εἶσαι ἡ μάρτυς Εὐφημία, ἔλα νὰ προσκυνήσουμε τὴν Ἁγία Τριάδα. Ὅ,τι κάνω ἐγὼ νὰ κάνης καὶ σύ. Μπῆκα στὴν Ἐκκλησία, κάνω μία μετάνοια λέγοντας: «Εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Πατρός». Τὸ ἐπανέλαβε μὲ μετάνοια. «Καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ». «-Καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ», εἶπε μὲ ψιλὴ φωνή. -Πιὸ δυνατά, ν ἀκούω, εἶπα καὶ ἐπανέλαβε δυνατότερα Συνέχεια στην σελ.5

Serapion the Martyr Ressurectional Apolytikion 4th Tone Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world. Apolytikion for the Holy Fathers You are greatly glorified, O Christ our God, who established our Fathers as luminaries upon the earth, and through them led us all to the true Faith. O Most compassionate, glory to You. Apolytikion of Sts. Constantine and Helen Having seen the image of Thy Cross in Heaven, and like Paul, having received the call not from men, Thine apostle among kings entrusted the commonwealth to Thy hand, O Lord. Keep us always in peace, by the intercessions of the Theotokos, O only Friend of man. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. Verse: Blessed are they whose transgressions have been forgiven. St. Paul's Letter to Titus 3:8-15 TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.when I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.all who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. Κατὰ Ματθαῖον Εἶπεν ὁ Κὐριος τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ μαθηταῖς Υμεῖς ἐστε τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου. οὐ δύναται πόλις κρυβῆναι ἐπάνω ὄρους κειμένη οὐδὲ καίουσι λύχνον καὶ τιθέασι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον, ἀλλ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν, καὶ λάμπει πᾶσι τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ.οὕτω λαμψάτω τὸ φῶς ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὅπως ἴδωσιν ὑμῶν τὰ καλὰ ἔργα καὶ δοξάσωσι τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. The Gospel of Matthew 5:14-19 The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

4 Elder Paisios and St. Euphemia: One day Father Paisios was going through a very difficult phase. A problem was created in the Church at that time and many bishops had gone to him to ask for his help. However, it was a very complicated problem and even if he wanted to, he was unable to assist; as he said, no matter from which side you look at the problem, you come face to face with a spiritual impasse. So, he decided to turn his efforts to solve the problem with prayer. During that time, Father Paisios constantly prayed for God to give solution to the Church's problem; he prayed especially to St. Ephemia:"St. Euphemia, you who miraculously solved the serious problem the Church was facing then, take the Church out of the present impasse!"one morning, at nine o'clock, when Father Paisios was reading the service of the third hour, he suddenly heard someone discreetly knocking on his door. The Elder asked from inside:"who is it?" Then, he heard a woman's voice answering:"it is me, Euphemia, Father.""Which Euphemia?" He asked again. There was no answer. There was another knock on the door and he asked again. "Who is it?" The same voice was heard saying: "It is Euphemia, Father."There was a third knock and the Elder felt someone coming inside his cell and walking through the corridor. He went to the door and there he saw St. Euphemia, who had miraculously entered his cell through the locked door and was venerating the icon of the Holy Trinity, which the Elder had placed on the wall of his corridor, on the right hand side of the church's door. Then the Elder told the Saint: "Say: Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." St. Euphemia clearly repeated those words and immediately Father Paisios knelt and venerated the Saint. Afterwards, they sat and talked for quite a while; he could not specify for how long, as he had lost all sense of time while being with St. Euphemia. She gave the solution for all three matters he had been praying for and in the end he said to her: "I would like you to tell me how you endured your martyrdom."the Saint replied: "Father, if I knew back then how eternal life would be and the heavenly beauty the souls enjoy by being next to God, I honestly would have asked for my martyrdom to last for ever, as it was absolutely nothing compared to the gifts of grace of God!"Towards the end of June, the doctors informed Elder Paisios that he had about 2-3 weeks left. On Monday, July 11, on St. Euphemia's day, Father Paisios received Holy Communion for the last time, kneeling in front of his bed. During the last 24 hours, he was very serene, and even though he suffered, he did not complain at all. He did not wish to take any more medication. The only medicine he accepted was cortisone, because, according to the doctors, it would not prolong his life span, but it would only give him some strength. On Tuesday, July 12, Elder Paisios humbly and peacefully rendered his soul to God, whom he had deeply loved and served since his early childhood. 4th Ecumenical Council Today we celebrate the Holy Fathers in the 4th Ecumenical Council. The dogma of the Orthodox was upheld through the miracle of St. Ephemia showing that Jesus Christ had two natures. The Divine and the Human nature in one Person.

5 "-Ἐνῶ ἦταν ἀκόμα στὸ διάδρομο ἔκανε μετάνοιες, ὄχι πρὸς τὴν Ἐκκλησία, ἀλλὰ πρὸς τὸ Κελί μου. Στὴν ἀρχὴ παραξενεύτηκα, ἀλλὰ μετὰ θυμήθηκα ὅτι εἶχα μία μικρὴ χάρτινη εἰκονίτσα τῆς Ἁγίας Τριάδος, κολλημένη σὲ ξύλο, πάνω ἀπὸ τὴν πόρτα τοῦ Κελλιοῦ μου. Ἀφοῦ προσκυνήσαμε καὶ γιὰ τρίτη φορά. -«Καὶ τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος» Μετὰ εἶπα: «Τώρα, νὰ σὲ προσκυνήσω καὶ ἐγώ». Τὴν προσκύνησα καὶ ἀσπάστηκα τὰ πόδια της καὶ τὴν ἄκρη τῆς μύτης της. Στὸ πρόσωπο τὸ θεώρησα ἀναίδεια νὰ τὴν ἀσπασθῶ.-ὕστερα κάθισε ἡ Ἁγία στὸ σκαμνάκι καὶ ἐγὼ στὸ μπαουλάκι καὶ μοῦ ἔλυσε τὴν ἀπορία ποὺ εἶχα (στὸ ἐκκλησιαστικὸ θέμα). -Μετά μου διηγήθηκε τὴν ζωή της. Ἤξερα ὅτι ὑπάρχει μία ἁγία Εὐφημία, ἀλλὰ τὸν βίο της δὲν τὸν ἤξερα. Ὅταν μου διηγεῖτο τὰ μαρτύρια της, ὄχι ἁπλῶς τὰ ἄκουγα, ἀλλὰ σὰν νὰ τὰ ἔβλεπα τὰ ζοῦσα. Ἔφριξα! Πά, πά, πά! -Πῶς ἄντεξες τέτοια μαρτύρια; ρώτησα. - Ἂν ἤξερα τί δόξα ἔχουν οἱ Ἅγιοι, θὰ ἔκανα ὅ,τι μποροῦσα νὰ περάσω πιὸ μεγάλα μαρτύρια. - Μετὰ ἀπ αὐτὸ τὸ γεγονὸς γιὰ τρεῖς μέρες δὲν μποροῦσα νὰ κάνω τίποτα. Σκιρτοῦσα καὶ συνεχῶς δόξαζα τὸν Θεό. Οὔτε νὰ φάω, οὔτε τίποτα συνεχῶς δοξολογία». Σὲ ἐπιστολὴ τοῦ ἀναφέρει: «Σ ὅλη μου τὴ ζωὴ δὲν θὰ μπορέσω νὰ ἐξοφλήσω τὴν μεγάλη μου ὑποχρέωση στὴν ἁγία Εὐφημία, ἡ ὁποία ἐνῶ ἦταν ἄγνωστή μου καὶ χωρὶς νὰ εἶχε καμιὰ ὑποχρέωση, μοῦ ἔκανε αὐτὴ τὴν μεγάλη τιμή». Διηγούμενος τὸ γεγονὸς πρόσθεσε μὲ ταπείνωση ὅτι παρουσιάστηκε ἡ ἁγία Εὐφημία, «ὄχι γιατί τὸ ἀξίζω, ἀλλὰ ἐπειδὴ μὲ ἀπασχολοῦσε ἐκεῖνο τὸν καιρὸ ἕνα θέμα ποὺ εἶχε σχέση μὲ τὴν κατάσταση τῆς Ἐκκλησίας γενικά, καὶ γιὰ δύο ἄλλους λόγους». Ἐντύπωση ἔκανε στὸν Γέροντα «πῶς αὐτὴ ἡ μικροκαμωμένη καὶ ἀδύνατη ἄντεξε τόσα μαρτύρια; Νὰ πεῖς ἦταν καμία (ἐννοοῦσε σωματώδης καὶ δυνατή). Μία σταλιὰ ἦταν». Μέσα σὲ αὐτὴν τὴν παραδεισένια κατάσταση συνέθεσε πρὸς τιμὴν τῆς Ἁγίας ἕνα στιχηρὸ προσόμοιο: «Ποίοις εὐφημιῶν ἄσμασιν εὐφημήσωμεν τὴν Εὐφημίαν, τὴν καταδεχθεῖσαν ἀπὸ ἄνωθεν καὶ ἐπισκεφθείσασαν κάτοικον μοναχὸν ἐλεεινὸν ἐν τὴ Καψάλα. Ἐκ τρίτου τὴν θύραν πάλιν τοῦ ἔκρουσε τετάρτη ἠνοίχθη μόνη ἐκ θαύματος καὶ εἰσελθοῦσα μὲ οὐράνιον δόξαν, τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἡ Μάρτυς, προσκυνοῦντες ὁμοὺ Τριάδα τὴν Ἁγίαν». Καὶ ἕνα ἐξαποστειλάριο κατὰ τὸ «Τοῖς μαθηταῖς συνέλθωμεν», ποὺ ἄρχιζε: «Μεγαλομάρτυς ἔνδοξέ τοῦ Χρίστοῦ Εὐφημία, σ ἀγαπῶ πολὺ-πολὺ μετὰ τὴν Παναγία». (Φυσικὰ αὐτὰ δὲν τὰ εἶχε γιὰ λειτουργικὴ χρήση, οὔτε τὰ ἔψαλλε δημοσίως). Παρὰ τὴν συνήθειά του βγῆκε πάλι στὴν Σουρωτὴ καὶ ἔκανε τὶς ἀδελφὲς μετόχους αὐτῆς τῆς οὐράνιας χαρᾶς. Μὲ τὴν βοήθειά του καὶ τὶς ὁδηγίες του ἁγιογράφησαν τὴν Ἁγία, ὅπως τοῦ ἐμφανίσθηκε. Ο Γέροντας φιλοτέχνησε τὸ ἀρνητικό τῆς εἰκόνος τῆς Ἁγίας σὲ μήτρα ἀτσάλινη μὲ τὴν ὁποία ἔκανε πρεσσαριστὰ εἰκονάκια καὶ τὰ μοίραζε εὐλογία στοὺς προσκυνητὲς εἰς τιμὴν τῆς ἁγίας Εὐφημίας.
