1 The Holy Protection of the Theotokos October 28th The Feast of the Protection commemorates the appearance of the most holy Theotokos in the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople in the early sixth century, as recorded in the life of Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ's sake. While the multitudes of the faithful were gathered in church, Epiphanius, the friend of Saint Andrew, through the Saint's prayers, beheld the Virgin Mary above the faithful and spreading out her veil over them, signifying her unceasing protection of all Christians. Because of this we keep a yearly feast of gratitude, imploring our Lady never to cease sheltering us in her mighty prayers. Apolytikion O Virgin, we extol the great grace of thy Protection, which thou didst spread out like a bright cloud beyond all understanding; for thou dost invisibly protect thy people from the foe's every assault. Since we have thee as our shelter and certain help, we cry to thee with our whole soul: Glory to thy great deeds, O most pure Maid. Glory to thy shelter most divine. Glory to thy care and providence for us, O spotless one. Kontakion Let us the faithful hasten to the Theotokos now and venerate her sacred veil, as we chant unto her, singing hymns to praise and honour her, as is fitting; for she shelt'reth with her shelter and all her faithful flock and preserveth them unharmed from all calamities, as they cry to her: Rejoice, Protection most radiant. Απήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐσώθη ὁ δαιμονισθείς. Καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς περιχώρου τῶν Γαδαρηνῶν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπ αὐτῶν, ὅτι φόβῳ μεγάλῳ συνείχοντο. Αὐτὸς δὲ ἐμβὰς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ὑπέστρεψεν. Παρακαλούμε διαδώστε αυτή την είδηση και ενθαρρύνετε τους εφήβους αλλά και τους φίλους τους να συμμετάσχουν. This will be an evening full of great food, excellent music, and fun times for all. The cost for this evening is $25 per member and $30 per non-member. NEW THIS YEAR: Teen Corner for ages 14 and up is a round-table discussion group led by Kosta Stavrianeas who has many years of experience teaching Orthodoxy to this age group. Verse: What shall I render to the Lord for all that he has given me? BRETHREN, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. The Gospel Reading: St. Luke: 8: At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then the people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

4 ΟΧΙ OXI DAY 28 ΟΚΤΩΒΡΙΟΥ 1940 Την 28η Οκτωβρίου του1940, στις 3:00 π.μ., η Ελλάδα έλαβε τελεσίγραφο από την φασιστική Κυβέρνηση της Ιταλίας που ζητούσε να παραχωρήσει εδάφη της στην Ιταλία ή να αντιμετωπίσει την επίθεση των ιταλικών στρατευμάτων μέχρι τις 6:00 το πρωί της ιδίας ημέρας. Ο Ελληνας Πρωθυπουργός, Ιωάννης Μεταξάς, αρνήθηκε λέγοντας το περίφημο ΟΧΙ, και ο πόλεμος μεταξύ των δύο χωρών άρχισε. Η σύγκρουση απέβη σε βάρος του εισβολέα, με αποτέλεσμα η ναζιστική Γερμανία να έρθει σε βοήθεια της Ιταλίας. Η Ελλάδα πολέμησε γενναία σε αυτό τον άνισο πόλεμο, δεδομένου του τεραστίου αριθμού ανδρών και πολεμικού εξοπλισμού του Αξονα. Τα γεγονότα μεταξύ της 29ης Απριλίου και 30ης Μαίου του 1941 και οι μαζικές εκτελέσεις Ελλήνων αγωνιστών τον Ιούνιο του 1941αποτελούν σταθμούς στην ιστορία. Οι τέσσερεις σύμμαχοι, Αυστραλία, Ελλάδα, Νέα Ζηλανδία και Μεγάλη Βρετανία κατάφεραν ριζικό πλήγμα στους φασίστες και Ναζί εισβολείς. OCTOBER 28TH 1940 On October 28,1940, at 3:00 a.m., Greece was given an ultimatum by the Fascist Italian Government to cede some of her territories to Italy, or face invasion by 6:00 a.m. the same morning. The Greek Prime Minister, Ioannis Metaxas, refused with his famous NO (OXI), and the war between the two countries began. The fortunes of war did not favour the aggressor, to the point that Nazi Germany came to the assistance of Italy. Greece fought a valiant war against the odds facing her, due to immense numbers of Axis troops and equipment.the Prime Minister of England, Winston Churchill, described their heroism by stating that, until now we knew that Greeks were fighting like heroes; from now on we shall say that the heroes fight like Greeks. Greece finally succumbed to the superior quantities of armament and other materiel of the Axis aggressors. The allies redeployed their forces in the most Southern part of Greece, the island of Crete, and fought one of the most critical battles in the 2nd World War. The events between April 29 and May 30, 1941, and the mass executions of Greek fighters during June 1941, are the keystone events. The four allies, Australia, Greece, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom broke the back of the fascist and the Nazi aggressors and changed the course of war. Courtesy of George Pitsicoulis

5 What Leads to Excessive Worry What leads a person to excessive worry? First, a person worries excessively when he plays God. People can actually behave as if they were God. This happens when they act as if everything depends on them. A person said once that sometimes his worries piled up so high that he thought he would break under the strain. A friend replied, That will never happen if you carry only your share, and don t try to take God s work out of His hands. Much of our excessive worry comes when we try to take God s work out of his Hands; we act as if everything depends on us. A second cause of excessive worry is that small word IF. What IF this should happen or what IF that should happen, what will happen to me? We call this borrowing trouble from the future. The ancient Spartans had a cure for this kind of worrying. The ancient Spartans were a military people who believed in few words. Once when a feud was brewing between the Athenians and the Spartans, the Athenians sent a messenger to Sparta with this message, If we come to your city we will burn it to the ground. The Spartans returned an answer composed of a single word, IF. A businessman kept a diary for many years; at the end of each day he wrote in green ink the thing that worried him most about tomorrow. Ten years later he checked to see if the things he worried about most had happened. He found that not one of them had ever occurred. Fr. Anthony M. Coniaris. Daily Vitamins for Spiritual Growth, vol. 1, page 85 Γιατί ο άνθρωπος ανησυχεί υπερβολικά; Ποιοι είναι οι λόγοι που προκαλούν υπερβολικές ανησυχίες στον άνθρωπο; Πρώτος λόγος είναι η επιθυμία του να συμπεριφέρεται σαν να είναι Θεός και όλα να εξαρτώνται από αυτόν. Κάποτε κάποιος είπε ότι μερικές φορές οι ανησυχίες του ήταν τόσες πολλές που νόμιζε ότι θα καταρρεύσει κάτω από την τόση πίεση. Ένας φίλος απάντησε : «Αυτό δεν μπορεί να συμβεί αν κουβαλάς μόνο το δικό σου μερίδιο, και δεν προσπαθείς να πάρεις το έργο του Θεού από τα χέρια Του». Οι περισσότερες από τις υπερβολικές μας ανησυχίες οφείλονται στο γεγονός ότι προσπαθούμε να πάρουμε το έργο του Θεού από τα χέρια Του. Συμπεριφερόμαστε σαν όλα να εξαρτώνται από εμάς. Ένας δεύτερος λόγος είναι η μικρή λεξούλα «Εάν». Τι θα γίνει, εάν αυτό συμβεί ή εάν συμβεί αυτό, τι θα συμβεί σε μένα; Αυτό το ονομάζουμε μελλοντικό πρόβλημα. Οι αρχαίοι Σπαρτιάτες είχαν τη λύση για αυτό το είδος ανησυχίας. Κάποτε, όταν σε μια διαμάχη Αθηναίων και Σπαρτιατών οι Αθηναίοι έστειλαν στην Σπάρτη μήνυμα με τον αγγελιοφόρο: «Εάν έρθουμε στην πόλη σας, θα την κάψουμε ολοκληρωτικά», οι Σπαρτιάτες απάντησαν μονολεκτικά : «Εάν». Ένας επιχειρηματίας κρατούσε ημερολόγιο για πολλά χρόνια. Στο τέλος της ημέρας έγραφε εκείνο που τον απασχολούσε πιο πολύ για «το αύριο». Δέκα χρόνια αργότερα διαπίστωσε ότι τίποτε από όσα τον απασχολούσαν δεν συνέβη τελικά! Π. 6 Philoptochos Corner Philoptochos Fall Social Tea and General Assembly-November 5th The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society of Ottawa will be hosting a Fall Social Tea and General Assembly on Sunday, November 5th from 1:00-3:00 pm following the Divine Liturgy in the Church Hall. All ladies of the community are welcome to join us. There will be a brief presentation on our programs and initiatives including an opportunity to learn about and/or join in on our special interest groups such as: Charities and Obligations, Stitchery and Craft Circle, Cooking and Baking, among others. Through the Pajama Drive, you are contributing to a warmer, more loving bedtime. The pajamas are to be new and unused, a complete set from newborn to 12 years old for boys and girls. Please feel free to drop off pajamas on Sundays in the Church Hall; during the week in the Church office; or on Saturdays at Greek School. No time to shop, please make a donation to Philoptochos for pajamas and we will buy them for you. Προγράμματα της Φιλοπτώχου "Φθινοπωρινό τσάι" και Γενική Συνέλευση - 5 Νοεμβρίου Την Κυριακή, 5 Νοεμβρίου, 1-3μ.μ. αμέσως μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας, στο χωλ του ιερού ναού, η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης προγραμματίζει μια συνάντηση «Φθινοπωρινό τσάι» κατά την οποία θα πραγματοποιηθεί και Γενική Συνέλευση. Όλες οι κυρίες και οι δεσποινίδες της Κοινότητάς μας είναι ευπρόσδεκτες. Θα υπάρξει μια σύντομη παρουσίαση των προγραμμάτων και πρωτοβουλιών μας, καθώς και η δυνατότητα να μάθετε και να γίνετε μέλος ομάδων ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος όπως: Φιλανθρωπία και Υποχρεώσεις, Κύκλος Ραψίματος και Χειροτεχνίας, Μαγειρική και Ζαχαροπλαστική. Αν επιθυμείτε μπορείτε να φέρετε μια φίλη σας. Τσάι, καφές και ένα ελαφρύ γεύμα θα σερβιριστεί. Για να επιβεβαιώσετε την παρουσία σας παρακαλούμε επικοινωνήστε με την Αργυρώ Λαύκα στο "Βραδιά για πλέξιμο" Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης προγραμματίζει μια συνάντηση όπου οι κυρίες θα πλέξουν πετσέτες, κασκόλ, σκουφιά και γάντια. Οι κυρίες που δεν επιθυμούν να πλέξουν μπορούν να δωρήσουν νήματα. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες μπορείτε να πάρετε στις 5 Νοεμβρίου 2017, κατά την διάρκεια της συνάντησης μας «Φθινοπωρινό τσάι». Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης Pajama Drive Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης, για τέταρτη κατά σειρά χρονιά, διοργανώνει Pajama Drive και σας καλεί να την στηρίξετε. Όπως και τα προηγούμενα χρόνια, η προσπάθεια αυτή αποβλέπει στο να συγκεντρωθούν πιτζάμες για παιδιά των οποίων οι οικογένειες αντιμετωπίζουν φτώχεια, εθισμό, ενδοοικογενειακή βία και θέματα ψυχικής υγείας. Μέσω αυτού του προγράμματος, μπορείτε να συμβάλετε σε έναν «πιο ζεστό και πιο όμορφο ύπνο» για αυτά τα παιδιά. Οι πιτζάμες πρέπει να είναι για παιδιά ηλικίας 3 μηνών έως και 12 ετών και, επιπλέον, να είναι καινούργιες και αμεταχείριστες. Μπορείτε να αφήνετε τις πιτζάμες: τις Κυριακές στο χωλ του ναού, στο γραφείο του ιερού ναού κατά τη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας και στο Ελληνικό Σχολείο τα Σάββατα. Εάν δεν έχετε χρόνο να ψωνίσετε οι ίδιοι, μπορείτε να δώσετε τη δωρεά σας στην Φιλόπτωχο που θα φροντίσει κάνει την αγορά εκ μέρους σας.
