2 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟ:.Κυριακή Κ Επιστολών Γαλ. α,11-19 «Σας κάνω γνωστό, αδελφοί, ότι το ευαγγέλιον, το οποίο κηρύχθηκε από εμένα, δεν είναι ανθρώπινο, διότι ούτε το πήρα ούτε το διδάχθηκα από ανθρώπους αλλά με αποκάλυψη του Ιησού Χριστού. Έχετε ακούσει, βέβαια, την άλλοτε διαγωγή μου εις τον Ιουδαϊσμό, ότι δηλαδή υπερβολικά καταδίωκα την εκκλησία του Θεού και την πολεμούσα. Και είχα μεγαλύτερες προόδους στον Ιουδαϊσμὸ από πολλούς συνομηλίκους συμπατριώτες μου, με τον υπερβολικό ζήλο που έδειχνα για τις πατρικές μου παραδόσεις. Όταν όμως ευδόκησε ο Θεός, ο οποίος με ξεχώρισε από την κοιλιά της μητέρας μου και με κάλεσε δια της χάριτός του, να αποκαλύψει μέσα μου τον Υιόν του, για να κηρύττω αυτόν στα έθνη, αμέσως δεν συμβουλεύθηκα ανθρώπους, ούτε ανέβηκα στα Ιεροσόλυμα προς εκείνους που ήταν απόστολοι πριν από εμένα, αλλά έφυγα στην Αραβία και πάλιν επέστρεψα στη Δαμασκό. Έπειτα, ύστερα από τρία χρόνια, ανέβηκα στα Ιεροσόλυμα για να γνωρίσω τον Πέτρο και έμεινα κοντά του δέκα πέντε μέρες. Άλλον από τους αποστόλους δεν είδα παρά τον Ιάκωβο, τον αδελφό του Κυρίου» EPISTLE: The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 1:11-19 Brethren, I would have you know that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. Ανάγνωσμα: Λουκ. 8, Εκείνο τον καιρό καθώς έφτασε ο Ιησούς στην περιοχή των Γαδαρηνών, τον συνάντησε κάποιος άντρας από την πόλη, που είχε μέσα του δαιμόνια από πολύ καιρό. Αυτός ρούχο δεν ντυνόταν ούτε έμενε σε σπίτι, αλλά ζούσε στα μνήματα. Όταν είδε τον Ιησού, έβγαλε μια κραυγή έπεσε στα πόδια του και με δυνατή φωνή του είπε: «Τι δουλειά έχεις εσύ μ εμένα Ιησού, Υιέ του Θεού του υψίστου; Σε παρακαλώ μη με βασανίσεις». Αυτά τα είπε, γιατί ο Ιησούς είχε διατάξει το δαιμονικό πνεύμα να βγει από τον άνθρωπο. Από πολλά χρόνια τον είχε στην εξουσία του, και για να τον συγκρατήσουν τον έδεναν με αλυσίδες και του έβαζαν σιδερένια δεσμά στα πόδια. Εκείνος όμως έσπαζε τα δεσμά, και το δαιμόνιο τον οδηγούσε στις ερημιές. Ο Ιησούς τον ρώτησε: «Ποιο είναι το όνομά σου;» Εκείνος απάντησε: «Λεγεών» γιατί είχαν μπει μέσα του πολλά δαιμόνια. Τον παρακαλούσαν λοιπόν να μην τα διατάξει να πάνε στην άβυσσο. Εκεί κοντά ήταν ένα κοπάδι από πολλούς χοίρους που έβοσκαν στο βουνό, 2

3 και τα δαιμόνια παρακαλούσαν τον Ιησού να τους επιτρέψει να μπουν στους χοίρους, και τους το επέτρεψε. Βγήκαν, λοιπόν, τα δαιμόνια από τον άνθρωπο και μπήκαν στους χοίρους. Το κοπάδι όρμησε προς τον γκρεμνό και πνίγηκε στη λίμνη. Μόλις οι βοσκοί είδαν τι έγινε, έφυγαν και το είπαν στην πόλη και στην ύπαιθρο. Βγήκαν οι άνθρωποι να δουν τι έγινε και ήρθαν κοντά στον Ιησού. Βρήκαν τον άνθρωπο από τον οποίο βγήκαν τα δαιμόνια να κάθεται δίπλα στον Ιησού, να φοράει ρούχα και να φέρεται λογικά, και φοβήθηκαν. Όσοι είχαν δει τι είχε γίνει τους είπαν για το πως ο δαιμονισμένος σώθηκε. Τότε όλο το πλήθος από την περιοχή των Γαδάρων παρακαλούσαν τον Ιησού να φύγει από κοντά τους, γιατί τους έπιασε μεγάλος φόβος. Εκείνος μπήκε στο πλοιάριο για να γυρίσει πίσω. Ο άνθρωπος από τον οποίο είχαν βγει τα δαιμόνια τον παρακαλούσε να τον πάρει μαζί του. Ο Ιησούς όμως του είπε να φύγει, με τα παρακάτω λόγια: «Γύρισε στο σπίτι σου και διηγήσου όσα έκανε για εσένα ο Θεός». Κι έφυγε διαλαλώντας σ όλη την πόλη όσα έκανε σ αυτόν ο Ιησούς. GOSPEL: 6th Sunday of Luke The Gospel According to Luke 8:26-39 At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. 3

We have a choice: to follow the way of this world, of the society that surrounds us, and thereby find ourselves outside of God; or to choose the way of life, to choose God Who calls us and for Whom our heart is searching. Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 6

8 Church Etiquette or Some Things You Should Know While in Church When to stand, sit or kneel during the Divine Liturgy Stand and Sit during the Following Times: 1. Stand at the beginning of the Liturgy at 'Blessed is the Kingdom of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever...' until the end of the Great Litany at ' For to You belong all glory, power and worship, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit...' Sit after the Priest has finished this last phrase. 2. Stand when the procession with the Gospel begins (this is called the Small Entrance and symbolizes the coming of Christ into the world). Stay standing until the beginning of the Epistle reading, at the beginning of which we may sit. 3. Stand when the Gospel is to be read, stand when you hear the Priest say ' Wisdom. Attend. Let us hear the Holy Gospel. Peace be with you all'. Stay standing after the Gospel and through the Procession with the Gifts for Holy Communion (this is called the Great Entrance and symbolizes Christ coming to His Passion). We can sit after the Priest has placed the Gifts upon the Altar, when we hear him say 'Let us complete our prayer to the Lord'. 4. Stand when we hear the Priest say 'Commemorating our All-Holy, most pure, blessed, and glorious Lady, Theotokos and ever virgin Mary' and 'Through the mercies of Your only begotten Son with Whom You are blessed'. Kneel when you hear the Priest saying 'Your Own from Your Own we offer You in every way and for every Thing' (On Sundays and between Pascha and Pentecost it is a custom to Bow instead of kneel at this time because these are periods of celebrating the Resurrection)' Keep standing through the Creed and until the Priest says 'Having commemorated all the Saints, again and again in peace let us pray to the Lord...' 5. Stand for the Lord's Prayer when you hear the Priest say 'And make us worthy Master...' then the 'Our Father'. Keep standing until you hear the Priest say 'Let us attend. The Holy Things are for the Holy' 6. Stand when the Priest comes out with Holy Communion. While Holy Communion is being distributed some people like to keep standing out of respect for Christ's physical presence in the Eucharist while others sit. You make a choice here. 7. Stand when Holy Communion is finished and keep standing until the end of the Service. 8. Sit when the Priest is preaching. When to make the sign of the Cross: 1. Whenever you feel the need 2. Before and after any prayers 3. When you enter and leave the Narthex and Nave 4. Before you kiss an Icon, Cross, or the Gospel Book 5. When you pass the Altar 6. Before and after the Consecration during the Divine Liturgy (when the Priest says 'Your Own of Your Own we offer You, In every way and for every Thing'. This is the point when the Priest prays with the people for God to make the Bread and Wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. 10. At the end of the Lord's Prayer while the Priest says 'For Yours is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen' 11. Before and after receiving Holy Communion 12. Before receiving Antidoron (The blessed bread at the end of the service). 10 Ο Απόστολος Παύλος απευθύνεται προς τους Γαλάτας και τους λέγει ότι το Ευαγγέλιο που κήρυξε σ αυτούς δεν είναι επινόηση του ανθρώπου. Όχι μόνο οι άλλοι Απόστολοι αλλά κι αυτός ο ίδιος δεν παρέλαβε αυτό από άνθρωπο, ούτε το διδάχθηκε από άνθρωπο, αλλά το παρέλαβε κατ ευθείαν δι αποκαλύψεως του Θεού. Στη συνέχεια υπενθυμίζει ποια ήταν η διαγωγή του προτού πιστέψει στο Χριστό. Ιουδαίος στην καταγωγή ανήκε στις τάξεις των Φαρισαίων, εκπαιδεύτηκε στα Ιεροσόλυμα το Μωσαϊκό νόμο και από νεαρά ηλικία έδειξε μεγάλο ζήλο για τη δόξα του Θεού. Γι αυτό όταν η νέα θρησκεία του Ιησού άρχισε να ξαπλώνεται σ όλη την Ιουδαία και πέραν αυτής έγινε σφοδρός διώχτης και πολέμιός της. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτού του διωγμού φωτίστηκε δι αποκαλύψεως από τον ίδιο τον Κύριο και από διώχτης των Χριστιανών έγινε ο πλέον θερμός υποστηριχτής του Χριστού. Απαρνήθηκε τις Ιουδαϊκές παραδόσεις και έστρεψε όλη του την αγάπη και φλογερό ζήλο υπέρ της νέας θρησκείας του Ιησού. Σαν διώχτης των Χριστιανών πήγαινε στη Δαμασκό αποφασισμένος να τους συλλάβει και να τους αιχμαλωτίσει. Στη πορεία όμως προς τη Δαμασκό έγινε η θαυματουργική του μεταστροφή. Ο Άγιος Λουκάς και ο Απόστολος Παύλος όταν μιλούν γι αυτή του τη μεταστροφή λένε τα γεγονότα χωρίς να δίδουν σ αυτά φυσική εξήγηση. Στα γεγονότα αυτά ο Θεός μιλά και ο Απόστολος υπακούει. Όταν ο Θεός ομιλεί οι άνθρωποι δεν ζητούν εξηγήσεις. Τρία χρόνια μετά τη κλήση του ο Παύλος πήγε στα Ιεροσόλυμα για να γνωρίσει προσωπικά τον Απόστολο Πέτρο. Έμεινε κοντά του δεκαπέντε μέρες και δεν είδε άλλον Απόστολο εκτός από τον Ιάκωβο τον Αδελφόθεο. Αυτό αποδεικνύει εκείνο που είπε στην αρχή ότι το ευαγγέλιο και το κήρυγμά του «ουκ έστι κατά άνθρωπο». Δε το διδάχτηκε από άνθρωπο και επομένως ούτε από τους άλλους Αποστόλους. Ενθουσιασμένος ο Απόστολος Παύλος από το τρόπο της μεταστροφής του, από το περιεχόμενο και την ανωτερότητα της νέας του πίστης αποφάσισε να τη κηρύξει σ όλους τους ανθρώπους. Πράγματι όταν οποιοσδήποτε άνθρωπος μελετήσει τη διδασκαλία του Σωτήρα Χριστού θα πεισθεί ότι το Ευαγγέλιο είναι διδασκαλία από Θεού. Ουδέποτε ελάλησε άνθρωπος όπως ο Κύριος Ιησούς και κανείς δεν έδωσε τόσο σαφή εικόνα του άπειρου Θεού. Το ιερό Ευαγγέλιο είναι ουράνια διδασκαλία, το πνευματικό «μάννα» του ουρανού, το προσκλητήριο της αγάπης, της ειρήνης, της χαράς και της εν Χριστώ Ιησού σωτηρίας. Ο Κύριος δεν έφερε απλά εκ του Ουρανού το θησαυρό της αλήθειας, αλλά έλαβε πρόνοια να το μεταδώσει σ όλο τον κόσμο. Για το σκοπό αυτό εξέλεξε τους Αποστόλους για να τη μεταδώσουν σ όλα τα έθνη. Οι Απόστολοι στη συνέχεια εξέλεξαν τους διαδόχους τους επισκόπους και ιερείς, ώστε δια μέσου της Εκκλησίας να μένει στους ανθρώπους εις τους αιώνας. Σημαντικότατο ρόλο στη διάδοση του Ευαγγελίου διεδραμάτισε ο Απόστολος Παύλος. Γνώριζε τη δύναμη του Ευαγγελίου και αγωνιζόταν μέρα και νύκτα να καταστήσει όσο το δυνατό περισσότερους ανθρώπους, κοινωνούς της θείας αυτής ευεργεσίας. Για το Χριστιανό που θέλει να είναι ενεργό μέλος της Εκκλησίας, το κήρυγμα και η διάδοση του Ευαγγελίου πρέπει να είναι διαρκές μέλημά του. 13 The Meaning of OXI Day Greece, the birthplace of democracy, said OXI (NO) to fascism and defended its birthright, despite overwhelming and unfavorable odds. I wanted to write this article to share with you all my feelings and impressions about this historic celebration. On this particular day we give honor to the many men and woman who stood up to the fascist Mussolini, and this was no small thing to do. First of all, Mussolini had 44 million people, and Greece had 7 million. Italy had ten times the fire power of Greece in its army navy and air force which had total air superiority, since Greece had only a small defensive force. The demands from Mussolini were sent to Prime Minister Metaxa. He gave Greece three hours to reply to his demands to surrender, and for the Italian troops to occupy Greece and raise the Italian Flag on top of the Parthenon. But Mussolini never even waited for Metaxas' reply. He had five heavily armed divisions of Italian soldiers moving from controlled Albania over the border into Greece. In the early hours of Oct 28th Metaxa gave his reply loud and clear: OXI (NO). The "OXI" cry has become a Hellenic battle cry that blooms defiantlyevery 28th of October. This cry of "OXI" is repeated by every Hellenic Community around the world, numbering more than ten million Greeks. Though the Italians out numbered the Greek soldiers by more than two to one, the Greeks astonished the Italian generals with their courage, their tenacity, and their limited artillery precision. The Greek forces had six mortars for each division against the invaders' sixty. Within four weeks of the invasion those Greeks drove the Italian army back into Albania and kept on going, continuing the pursuit until they were 60 kilometers into Albania which is known as Northern Epirus. By this time Mussolini had replaced his commanding generals several times and finally assumed command himself. He tried to rouse his troops to victory with speeches of the great legacy of the Romans, but the Greeks kept on pursuing and there was great concern that the Greeks would cross the Adriatic Sea and invade Italy. No free country around the world believed that Greece would survive the attack. As a small country Greece faithfully and courageously met her obligations to her allies with heroism and self-sacrifice. Greece suffered much more than other countries that were on the victorious Allied side. Greece lost the highest percentage of her population, about 12%, which means about one million people. That is why the world leaders of that time recognized the contribution of the Greeks. Mr. Churchill of England said "Hence, we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks." All those who believe in freedom and democracy give honor to the heroes who died on October 28, 1940 which is 77 years ago. Let us all say a big OXI to wars, to terrorism and to hate, and a big "yes" to freedom, democracy and love. This is history, my friends 13

14 Η Αγία Σκέπη της Θεοτόκου και το έπος του 40 Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι οι δύο σημαντικότερες εθνικές γιορτές του έθνους μας έχουν το ιδιαίτερο χαρακτηριστικό να συνεορτάζονται με μία γιορτή της Παναγίας. Την 25η Μαρτίου γιορτάζουμε τον ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου και, σήμερα, την 28η Οκτωβρίου την Αγία Σκέπη της Θεοτόκου. Η γιορτή αυτή μετατέθηκε από την εκκλησία μας το 1952 από την 1η Οκτωβρίου την 28η ως ένδειξη ευγνωμοσύνης προς τη Μητέρα του Θεού για τη σκέπη και την προστασία της στον αγώνα των Ελλήνων απέναντι στους αλαζόνες Ιταλούς, αρχικά, και, αργότερα, σε όλη τη διάρκεια της εθνικής αντίστασης. Μία αντίσταση στην απολυταρχική βία, στην άκρως αλαζονική απαίτηση να παραδώσουμε με τη θέλησή μας τμήματα του εθνικού εδάφους, να προδώσουμε τα κεκτημένα με αγώνες και με το αίμα των προγόνων μας. Η ελληνική ψυχή όμως έδωσε την απάντηση που έπρεπε, είπε το περήφανο ΟΧΙ και ξεκίνησε έναν αγώνα για τα ιερά και τα όσια της πατρίδας μας, με αποτέλεσμα να αιφνιδιάσει δυσάρεστα τους εισβολείς, να τους χαρίσει ιδιαίτερα ταπεινωτικές ήττες και να τους αναγκάσει να αποσυρθούν μέσα από τα αλβανικά σύνορα και να περιμένουν εκεί τη βοήθεια των συμμάχων. Είναι όμως απαραίτητο στο σημείο αυτό να κάνουμε μία σύντομη ιστορική αναδρομή και να δούμε τα γεγονότα με τη σειρά. 28 Οκτωβρίου του 1940, στις τρεις τα ξημερώματα, ο Ιταλός πρεσβευτής στην Αθήνα Γκράτσι, επισκέπτεται, στην οικία του, τον πρωθυπουργό της χώρας Ιωάννη Μεταξά και του επιδίδει τελεσίγραφο με το οποίο ζητούσε, μέσα σε τρεις ώρες, την ελεύθερη διέλευση και στάθμευση των ιταλικών στρατευμάτων στην Ελλάδα. Με τη φράση «Πόλεμος λοιπόν», ο Μεταξάς απορρίπτει το ιταλικό τελεσίγραφο και απευθύνει διάγγελμα προς τον ελληνικό λαό. Αρχίζει έτσι η ιταλική επίθεση κατά της Ελλάδας, στο αλβανικό μέτωπο, την ώρα που ο λαός διαδηλώνοντας στους δρόμους της Αθήνας κατά της Ιταλίας, τρέχει με ενθουσιασμό να καταταγεί και να πολεμήσει στο μέτωπο. Σε λίγες μόνο μέρες, οι εισβολείς εκδιώχθηκαν από το ελληνικό έδαφος από επιστρατευμένες κυρίως δυνάμεις, με ανεπαρκή μεταφορικά μέσα και εφοδιασμό, αλλά με τη συνδρομή των χωρικών της Μακεδονίας και της Ηπείρου, που έσπευσαν στο εθνικό προσκλητήριο και έπαιξαν ουσιαστικό ρόλο στον ανεφοδιασμό. Για να κάμψουν το ηθικό του ελληνικού λαού, οι Ιταλοί άρχισαν τον βομβαρδισμό ελληνικών πόλεων. Η Ελληνική αντεπίθεση στο μέτωπο, άρχισε στις 14 Νοεμβρίου και γρήγορα οι δυνάμεις μας διέρρηξαν την ιταλική αμυντική γραμμή και στις 22 Νοεμβρίου οι Έλληνες στρατιώτες εισέρχονταν στην Κορυτσά. Η προέλαση συνεχίστηκε αργά αλλά αποφασιστικά και στις 6 Δεκεμβρίου, ο ελληνικός στρατός καταλάμβανε το λιμάνι των Αγίων Σαράντα. Στη συνέχεια ο ελληνικός στρατός πήρε στα χέρια του την πρωτοβουλία, πέρασε σε ορμητική αντεπίθεση, πέταξε τους επιδρομείς έξω από τα ελληνικά εδάφη και τους καταδίωξε μέσα στο αλβανικό έδαφος, κατατροπώνοντάς τους. Μήπως όμως χρειάζεται να αναζητήσουμε κάποια ερμηνεία για όλα αυτά τα γεγονότα; Δεν χωράει αμφιβολία ότι η εποποιία του 1940, αποτελεί ένα θαύμα, είναι ένα από τα πολλά θαύματα στην ιστορία των Ελλήνων. Δεν μπορεί να είναι καρπός αποκλειστικά ανθρώπινου αγώνα. Η θεϊκή χάρη συνεργάσθηκε με την ανθρώπινη προσπάθεια. Και είναι δίκαιο που μαζί με τα θριαμβευτικά 14

15 σαλπίσματα πάνω από τους τάφους των ηρώων, σήμαναν δοξαστικές καμπάνες για ένα «ευχαριστώ» στην Παναγία, σ' εκείνη, στην οποία η εθνική συνείδηση απέδωσε για μια ακόμα φορά «τα νικητήρια». Τη Σκέπη των αγωνιστών. Την Ελευθερώτρια των σκλαβωμένων. Γιατί στα κρίσιμα χρόνια του πολέμου οι Έλληνες εμπιστεύθηκαν στα χέρια της Παναγίας τον αγώνα τους. Ζήτησαν τη μητρική προστασία της για να υπερασπιστούν τα δίκαιά τους. Και ήταν τόση η πίστη τους, ώστε την έβλεπαν να τους εμψυχώνει και να τους σκεπάζει, καθώς πολεμούσαν απεγνωσμένα στα χιονισμένα βουνά της Πίνδου και της Αλβανίας. Η άλλοτε Υπέρμαχος Στρατηγός των Ρωμιών γίνεται η Αγία Σκέπη των αγωνιστών και το θαύμα επαναλαμβάνεται. Χάρη στην πίστη που θερμαίνει τις ψυχές τους οι μαχητές περιφρονούν τη λογική των αριθμών και αντιστέκονται στις σιδερόφρακτες εχθρικές στρατιές με ηρωισμό που κινεί τον παγκόσμιο θαυμασμό. Για τους λόγους αυτούς η Εκκλησία σήμερα, δηλαδή όλοι εμείς, ανυμνούμε τη Σκέπη της Παναγίας, και την παρακαλούμε να μας σκεπάζει πάντα με την αγάπη της και να στέκεται πάντα δίπλα, βοηθός και συμπαραστάτης στο Έθνος μας, σε κάθε καλό αγώνα, γιατί τη βοήθεια της την έχουμε το ίδιο ανάγκη και στον καιρό της ειρήνης. Ας μελετήσουμε την ιστορία μας, να γνωρίσουμε με ποιούς αγώνες των προγόνων μας μπορούμε εμείς σήμερα να ζούμε ελεύθεροι, αλλά και να διαβάσουμε συγκλονιστικές μαρτυρίες αγωνιστών της εθνικής αντίστασης, οι οποίοι στον υπεράνθρωπο αγώνα τους πάνω στα παγωμένα βουνά έβλεπαν την Παναγία ζωντανά και έπαιρναν κουράγιο να συνεχίσουν. Ας είναι λοιπόν η 28η Οκτωβρίου ένα έναυσμα να ασχοληθούμε όλοι περισσότερο με την ιστορία μας, ένα μνημόσυνο για όσους έπεσαν ηρωικά στον πόλεμο και μία ελάχιστη τιμή ευγνωμοσύνης στη Μητέρα μας την Παναγία. 21 October 26 Reading Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword.
