STYLIANOS ΑΓΙΟΥ ΣΤΥΛΙΑΝΟΥ (Η μνήμη του τιμάται στις 26 Νοεμβρίου) St. Stylianos was from Paphlagonia living in the latter 6th century and early 7th century. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ with his whole heart and lived in strict asceticism. When he fell asleep in the Lord, his face shone like the sun and an angel appeared to take his soul to Glory. His prayers have worked many miracles, both during his earthly life and since. He is of special help to children who are ill and to childless couples. He is known as a protector of orphans. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.' " And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth." And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." But 2

3 when he heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looking at him said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" PRAYER PRAY EVERY Morning and Evening at a Minimum Remember to make your prayer life one that is a firm rule and not something that is done occasionally or sporadically. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN O God, our heavenly Father, Who loves mankind and is a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant(s) (names), for whom I humbly pray to You, and whom I commend to Your gracious care and protection. O God, be their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love and fear, doing Your will in all things. Give them grace and mercy so that they may be patient, hard working, tireless, devout, and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption, and direct them in the way of salvation, through the goodness of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and the prayers of His Holy Mother and the blessed Saints. Sponsor a Day at St. George s! This year, 2017, it will cost over $480,000 to run St. George s. That means that it costs about $1320 a day to keep the doors of our church open. Following other successful parishes, we have decided to challenge our parishioners to sponsor a day at St. George s. With about 300 families, that means we could come close to sponsoring the whole year if every family would take a single day. 6 Guidelines for the Nativity Fast The Nativity Fast Begins (November 15 through December 24) Strict Fast Refrain from meat, fish, oil, wine, dairy, and eggs. The Nativity Fast is one of the four Canonical Fasting Seasons in the Church year. This is a joyous fast in anticipation of the Nativity of Christ. That is the reason it is less strict than other fasting periods. The fast is divided into two periods. The 1st period is November 15th through December 19th when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil) is observed. There is dispensation given for wine and oil on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Similarly, fish, wine, and oil are permitted on Saturdays and Sundays. The 2nd period is December 20th through 24th when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil) is observed. There is dispensation given for wine and oil only on Saturday and Sunday during this period. Here are the guidelines: ( More fish is allowed) Meat Dairy Fish Wine Oil beef, chicken, pork, turkey, elk, veal, lamb, deer, rabbit, buffalo, and so forth milk, eggs, cheese, butter, yogurt, cream, and so forth fish with a backbone (not including shrimp, octopus, shellfish, squid, or other seafood. Abstain. Abstain. Permitted only on Saturdays and Sundays before December 20. (some permit fish Tuesdays and Thursdays also) (some include all types of alcohol in this category) Permitted only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays before December 20. (some include all types of oil in this category) Permitted only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays before December 20. Abstinence includes refraining from the food and drink mentioned above, as well as from smoking. The Eucharistic Fast means abstaining from at least the previous midnight for communing at a morning Liturgy. 6

8 YOUR THREE BUCKET LIST By Bill Marianes Maybe we can t change the world. If you figured that out already, congratulations, you may be ahead of the game and me. I have a theory called the Three Bucket List. It s not a list of the things to do before you pass from this earth. Guru of management and non-profit entities, Peter Drucker, taught the rule of twos and threes. It has different applications, including we should never make more than two or three points if we want to communicate effectively. Following this advice, I believe all opportunities, issues and problems that we all face fit into one of three buckets: Bucket 1: The things we control; Bucket 2: The things we influence; and Bucket 3: The things we really can t do anything about. Most of us spend an inordinate amount of time and energy fretting about that 3rd bucket of things we really can t do anything about. It is frustrating, unproductive, unhealthy, and does little to improve the world or advance our journey toward theosis and salvation. But boy do we know how to rant and rave about those 3rd bucket issues. Don t get me wrong, into which bucket any particular issue belongs depends on who you are. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did not have any 3rd bucket issues. If you are the President of the U.S.A., world peace may be in bucket 2 for you; but for most of us, it is a goal beyond our wingspan. Even the Apostles sometimes struggled with into which bucket a particular person, problem or issue should go. So it s OK if we don t always get it right at first. My previous stewardship messages focused almost exclusively on the 1st bucket, namely, your ability to control living a life of a true Christian steward and making a difference in what you do. That is a paramount part of each of our own, unique stewardship callings. We must make a difference where we can since stewardship is what we do with the gifts God gave us. That is uniquely personal because your gifts were given uniquely to you by your Father. And what you do with all those gifts is your gift back to Him and the others whom your gifts benefit. It doesn t get more personal that that. So no excuses for 1st bucket issues. As the old Nike ad said: Just Do It. Welcome to my no whining zone. If it s a 1st bucket issue, the only thing preventing you from dealing with it is you. Give thanks every day. Give back every day. Pay it forward everyday. Do the right thing every day. Fix what you can fix every day. Enjoy your life, and live your own unique stewardship calling every day. As to bucket 3, give it a rest. Isometrics may improve your body strength, but worrying and fussing about the things you can t do anything about will only weaken you. How many Parish meetings have been derailed by obsessing about things we can t solve or the mistakes others made? I believe you can t change how you got to where you are, but you can change where you re going and how you will get there. I have wasted countless hours, energies and lack of productivity ranting and raving about things (and some people) I really can t do anything about. No more. I m not getting any younger, and it isn t helping my soul. For one moment, please imagine how your Parish would change if we all stopped complaining about 3rd bucket issues we can t do anything about and learned to be more positive, productive and encouraging to those around us. By the way, learning to stop fretting about 3rd bucket issues is a 1st bucket opportunity because you can do that for yourself immediately. It really does make you feel better and brings you more peace. It doesn t mean you shouldn t pray about those important, but seemingly impossible, issues. Just stop obsessing and worrying about them. 8

9 We should spend more time on the 2nd bucket things we can influence. Because of the unique gifts God has given you, you are inalienably able to influence an amazing number of people and things in your Parish/Metropolis/Archdiocese and you must focus on those things you can influence. We need to create a culture of stewardship over our gifts in our communities and uplift everyone with whom we interact. In Luke 10:1, a holy charge was given to make 70 disciples. That is your 2nd bucket charge also. As a part of your unique stewardship calling, who will you recruit to the cause and what will you do to make your Parish/Metropolis/Archdiocese better? Into which Parish/Metropolis/Archdiocese ministry will you pour your enormous talents and energy? It doesn t matter where you are in life. You have gifts that can be used for God s greater glory and your salvation. As my Holy Cross Seminary graduate son-in-law Paul ( reminded me that one of the hymns of Holy Tuesday admonishes us: Come, O believers, let us labor with zeal for the Master. Since He distributes the wealth to His servants, let each of us correspondingly increase the talent of grace that we received. Let one acquire wisdom by means of good deeds.and let another disperse his wealth to the poor. And so let us increase that which was lent to us, so that as faithful stewards of grace we may be counted worthy of the Master s joy. That hymn says it all. It s about taking the gifts that God has given us and focusing our energies on the things we can control or influence for God s greater glory and for the achievement of our unique stewardship calling and our salvation. You are called to fix 1st bucket issues which you control, and work diligently on the things you can influence in the 2nd bucket. Instead of wasting any energy griping about 3rd bucket issues you can t do anything about, save your breath for prayer and cooling soup. Do something today in gratitude for Christ s redeeming love and to help prepare your soul for salvation! May God bless you as you pursue your own unique stewardship calling. 10 Ο ΟΣΙΟΣ ΠΑΤΗΡ ΗΜΩΝ ΣΤΥΛΙΑΝΟΣ Ο ΠΑΦΛΑΓΩΝ «Ο όσιος Στυλιανός αγιάστηκε ήδη από τη μήτρα της μητέρας του και έγινε κατοικητήριο του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Έδωσε μάλιστα ό,τι περιουσία είχε στους πτωχούς και ακολούθησε τον μοναχικό βίο, ξεπερνώντας όλους στην επίπονη άσκηση και τη σκληραγωγία. Έπειτα πήγε στην έρημο, κι αφού βρήκε ένα σπήλαιο ως τόπο κατοικίας, δεχόταν τροφή από θείο άγγελο κι έγινε θεραπευτής ποικίλων ανιάτων παθών. Όταν κάποτε ο φθοροποιός θάνατος, προσβάλλοντας νεογνά, έκανε άτεκνες αυτές που είχαν γεννήσει, οι μητέρες επικαλούνταν το όνομα του αγίου και φτιάχνοντας το τίμιο εικόνισμά του ξαναγίνονταν και πάλι ικανές προς τεκνοποιία. Όταν πέθανε, το σώμα του κατατέθηκε στη χώρα των Παφλαγόνων, επιτελώντας πολλές ιάσεις και θαυματουργίες». Ο όσιος Στυλιανός είναι γνωστός ως προστάτης, κυρίως, των παιδιών: των νηπίων, των βρεφών, των νεογνών. «Εξαιρέτως νεογνών και νηπίων και βρεφών προστάτης εδείχθης θερμότατος». Το ιδιαίτερο αυτό χάρισμά του ως προς τα παιδιά, όπως σημειώνει το συναξάρι του, δεν του δόθηκε αυθαίρετα. Ο ίδιος ο Θεός φανέρωσε τη θέλησή Του να θεραπεύονται τα παιδιά μέσω αυτού: η επίκληση του ονόματός του γινόταν ίαμα σ αυτά και στις μητέρες τους. «Ο Χριστός σε εμεγάλυνε, χάριτι πολλή, και θείοις θαύμασι, και νεογνών και νηπίων ακέστορα (=θεραπευτή, σωτήρα), Πάτερ, τω κόσμω σε έδειξε». Ποια η αιτία που πρέπει να εννοήσουμε για το χάρισμα αυτό; Γιατί κατεξοχήν αυτός να θεωρείται ο ευεργέτης των παιδιών; Η απάντηση μάλλον σχετίζεται με αυτό που κατά κόρον θίγει ο υμνογράφος της ακολουθίας του, εν προκειμένω ο μακαριστός γέροντας π. Γεράσιμος Μικραγιαννανίτης: ότι αγιάστηκε ήδη από την κοιλιά της μητέρας του. «Θεώ από παιδός ανετέθη» «ηγίασε, Πάτερ, σε ο Θεός μητρός εκ κοιλίας» «αγιασθείς από μητρώας νηδύος». Και τούτο διότι ο Θεός προείδε, μέσα στα πλαίσια της παγγνωσίας Του, τη θετική προς Αυτόν στάση του, οπότε τον χαρίτωσε με πλούσια χαρίσματα και σημεία. «Απαλών εξ ονύχων σε ο Θεός προσελάβετο, προειδώς του βίου σου την χρηστότητα». Η από τόσο νωρίς κλήση του από τον Θεό μάλιστα κάνει τον υμνογράφο να τον παραλληλίζει με γιγάντια από το παρελθόν αναστήματα, που και αυτά είχαν κληθεί με αντίστοιχο τρόπο: τον προφήτη Σαμουήλ, τον προφήτη Ιερεμία, τον προφήτη και Πρόδρομο του Κυρίου, Ιωάννη τον Βαπτιστή («Σαμουήλ ως ένθεος», «ως ο κλεινός Ιερεμίας», «ώσπερ ο μέγας Βαπτιστής»). Ο περιορισμός όμως των χαρισμάτων του μεγάλου Στυλιανού μόνο στον κόσμο των παιδιών θα ήταν μία συρρίκνωση μη αληθινή της θαυμαστής παρουσίας του στην Εκκλησία. Και τούτο διότι η Εκκλησία μας τον προβάλλει, πέρα από προστάτη των παιδιών, και ευρύτερα ως έναν από τους στύλους της, ως ένα από τα στηρίγματά της: «στύλος άσειστος της Εκκλησίας, Στυλιανέ, ανεδείχθης, μακάριε», κατά το γνωστό απολυτίκιό του. Χρειάζεται να το εξηγήσουμε. Η Εκκλησία μας βεβαίως στηρίζεται στον Κύριο Ιησού Χριστό, ο Οποίος αποτελεί τον θεμέλιο λίθο της, γι αυτό και ως θεοΐδρυτη «πύλαι Άδου ου κατισχύσουσιν αυτής», όμως ο ίδιος ο Χριστός θέλησε να μαρτυρείται στον κόσμο και να στερεώνονται οι άνθρωποι και μέσω των πιστών Του. Εκείνος ήταν που είπε ότι οι μαθητές Του θα αποτελούν τους μάρτυρές Του στον κόσμο όλο, όπως και ότι το όνομά Του θα βλασφημείται ή όχι εξαιτίας τους. Από την άποψη αυτή, ο πιστός που με συνέπεια ακολουθεί τον Κύριο, σαν τον όσιο Στυλιανό «τω Χριστώ ηκολούθησας τελείω φρονήματι» - γίνεται και αυτός ένας στύλος της Εκκλησίας, κατά το θέλημα του ίδιου του Χριστού: οι άνθρωποι μπορούν να στηρίζονται επάνω του, βλέποντας σαν σε διαφάνεια την παρουσία Εκείνου. Ποιο το κύριο γνώρισμα της αγιασμένης ζωής του, κατά τους ύμνους της Εκκλησίας μας; Ο 10

11 άγιος Στυλιανός «αξίως διέπρεψε ηθών καθαρότητι και αγώσιν ιεροίς αρετών τελειότητος, ώσπερ άγγελος». (Διέπρεψε στην καθαρότητα των ηθών και στους ιερούς αγώνες για να αποκτήσει την τελειότητα των αρετών ως άγγελος). Κι αυτό θα πει ότι αυτό που χαρακτήριζε τη ζωή του, ώστε να ζήσει την αγάπη του Θεού, ήταν η εγκράτεια. Επανειλημμένως η ακολουθία του αναφέρει ότι υπήρξε «στήλη έμψυχος της εγκρατείας», «της εγκρατείας αληθής υποτύπωσις». Δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι προβάλλεται «ως άσαρκος», «φθαρτών την αίσθησιν ολικώς βδελυξάμενος», ζώντας σε ένα σπήλαιο και τρεφόμενος από άγγελο του Θεού. Μιλώντας όμως για εγκράτεια δεν πρέπει να την εννοήσουμε με έννοια αιρετική: ως αποχή των αισθητών από μίσος προς αυτά ή ως μία άρνηση γενικότερα προς τη ζωή. Η εγκράτεια, κατά την πίστη μας, είναι η απομάκρυνση από τη γοητεία που ασκεί ο κόσμος στον άνθρωπο μέσω των αισθήσεών του, διότι έχει προσανατολίσει εν αγάπη και θείω έρωτι τον νου και την καρδιά του προς τον Θεό. Η εγκράτεια δηλαδή είναι μία γενική αρετή, που χαρακτηρίζει όλη τη ζωή του ανθρώπου. «Ο πιστός πάντα εγκρατεύεται». Που σημαίνει: δεν είναι δυνατόν να στραφεί κάποιος προς τον Θεό, αν ταυτοχρόνως δεν καταβάλλει προσπάθεια απεγκλωβισμού του από τον μαγνήτη των παθών. «Ουδείς δύναται δυσί κυρίοις δουλεύειν». Δεν είναι δυνατόν, για παράδειγμα, να είναι κανείς με τον Θεό, να ακολουθεί τα ίχνη του Χριστού, χωρίς να θέλει να νηστεύει. Η νηστεία, ως στοιχείο εγκράτειας, δηλώνει το πού έχει ρίξει ο πιστός το κέντρο βάρους της ψυχής του. Αδυναμία νηστείας εννοείται χωρίς να υπάρχει ιατρικός λόγος σημαίνει ότι η ψυχή είναι «δεμένη» με τα πράγματα του κόσμου τούτου και όχι με τον Χριστό. Έτσι η εγκράτεια κατανοείται πρωτίστως με θετική διάσταση. Για να χρησιμοποιήσουμε μία εικόνα: είναι σαν το ελατήριο εκείνο που συμπιεζόμενο, μπορεί να φαίνεται ότι μικραίνει, μαζεύει όμως τεράστια ενέργεια. Κι η ενέργεια αυτή μπορεί να δώσει μεγάλη ώθηση πετάγματος. Η εγκράτεια λοιπόν, ασκούμενη σωστά στην Εκκλησία, δίνει εκείνη την τεράστια ενέργεια, προκειμένου κανείς να «πετάξει», να ακολουθήσει δηλαδή τα χνάρια του Χριστού. Στην πραγματικότητα είναι το «απαρνησάσθω εαυτόν» που είπε ο Κύριος, για να γίνει κάποιος ακόλουθος και μαθητής Του. «Κατεπλάγησαν την σην ασκητικήν διαγωγήν οι ορώντες σε, σοφέ, άσαρκον βίον εν σαρκί πολιτευόμενον έρωτι τω αγίω» θα σημειώσει για τον άγιο Στυλιανό επί του θέματος ο υμνογράφος. Δηλαδή: Αυτοί που σε έβλεπαν, σοφέ, να ζεις από άγιο θεϊκό έρωτα άσαρκο βίο μέσα σε σάρκα, έμειναν έκπληκτοι για την ασκητική σου διαγωγή. Είθε, με τις πρεσβείες του οσίου μεγάλου Στυλιανού, η χάρη του Θεού να δώσει να ζούμε και εμείς με λίγη εγκράτεια, σ έναν κόσμο που ταλανίζεται μεν από όλων των ειδών τις κρίσεις, αλλά είναι βουτηγμένος κατά το πλείστον στις διάφορες εμπαθείς ηδονές. In addition, if you would like KOLYVA we ask that you contact Katina Kollias or Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 13

GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVEING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. 19 Apostle Andrew, the Holy and All-Praised First-Called Commemorated on November 30 The Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called was the first of the Apostles to follow Christ, and he later brought his own brother, the holy Apostle Peter, to Christ (John 1:35-42). The future apostle was from Bethsaida, and from his youth he turned with all his soul to God. He did not enter into marriage, and he worked with his brother as a fisherman. When the holy Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John began to preach, Saint Andrew became his closest disciple. Saint John the Baptist himself sent to Christ his own two disciples, the future Apostles Andrew and John the Theologian, declaring Christ to be the Lamb of God. After the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, Saint Andrew went to the Eastern lands preaching the Word of God. He went through Asia Minor, Thrace, Macedonia, he reached the River Danube, went along the coast of the Black Sea, through Crimea, the Black Sea region and along the River Dniepr he climbed to the place where the city of Kiev now stands. He stopped overnight on the hills of Kiev. Rising in the morning, he said to those disciples that were with him: See these hills? Upon these hills shall shine forth the beneficence of God, and there will be a great city here, and God shall raise up many churches. The apostle went up around the hills, blessed them and set up a cross. Having prayed, he went up even further along the Dniepr and reached a settlement of the Slavs, where Novgorod was built. From here the apostle went through the land of the Varangians towards Rome for preaching, and again he returned to Thrace, where in the small village of Byzantium, the future Constantinople, he founded the Church of Christ. The name of the holy Apostle Andrew links the mother, the Church of Constantinople, with her daughter, the Russian Church. On his journeys the First-Called Apostle endured many sufferings and torments from pagans: they cast him out of their cities and they beat him. In Sinope they pelted him with stones, but remaining unharmed, the persistant disciple of Christ continued to preach to people about the Savior. Through the prayers of the Apostle, the Lord worked miracles. By the labors of the holy Apostle Andrew, Christian Churches were established, for which he provided bishops and clergy. The final city to which the Apostle came was the city of Patra, where he was destined to suffer martyrdom. The Lord worked many miracles through His disciple in Patra. The infirm were made whole, and the blind received their sight. Through the prayers of the Apostle, the illustrious citizen Sosios recovered from serious illness; he healed Maximilla, wife of the governor of Patra, and his brother Stratokles. The miracles accomplished by the Apostle and his fiery speech enlightened almost all the citizens of the city of Patra with the true Faith. Few pagans remained at Patra, but among them was the prefect of the city, Aegeatos. The Apostle Andrew repeatedly turned to him with the words of the Gospel. But even the miracles of the Apostle did not convince Aegeatos. The holy Apostle with love and humility appealed to his soul, striving to reveal to him the Christian mystery of life eternal, through the wonderworking power of the Holy Cross of the Lord. The angry Aegeatos gave orders to crucify the apostle. The pagan thought he might undo Saint Andrew s preaching if he were to put him to death on the cross. Saint Andrew the First-Called accepted the decision of the prefect with joy and with prayer to the Lord, and went willingly to the place of execution. In order to prolong the suffering of the saint, Aegeatos gave orders not to nail the saint s hands and feet, but to tie them to the cross. For two days the apostle taught the citizens who gathered about. The people, in listening to him, with all their souls pitied him and tried to take Saint Andrew down from the cross. Fearing a riot of the people, Aegeatos gave orders to stop the execution. But the holy apostle began to pray that the Lord would grant him death on the cross. Just as the soldiers tried to take hold of the Apostle Andrew, they lost control of their hands. The crucified apostle, having given glory to God, said: Lord Jesus Christ, receive my spirit. Then a blazing ray of divine light illu- 19

20 mined the cross and the martyr crucified upon it. When the light faded, the holy Apostle Andrew had already given up his holy soul to the Lord. Maximilla, the wife of the prefect, had the body of the saint taken down from the cross, and buried him with honor. A few centuries later, under the emperor Constantine the Great, the relics of the holy Apostle Andrew were solemnly transferred to Constantinople and placed in the church of the Holy Apostles beside the relics of the holy Evangelist Luke and Saint Paul s disciple Saint Timothy.
