2 ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟ: Αποστ. ανάγνωσμα: Εφεσ. δ, 8-19 Κάποτε ήσασταν στο σκοτάδι, τώρα όμως, που πιστεύετε στον Κύριο, είστε στο φως. Να ζείτε, λοιπόν, σαν άνθρωποι που ανήκουν στο φως. Γιατί η ζωή εκείνων που οδηγούνται από το Άγιο Πνεύμα διακρίνεται για την αγαθότητα, τη δικαιοσύνη και την αλήθεια. Να εξετάζετε τι αρέσει στον Κύριο. Και να μη συμμετέχετε στα σκοτεινά κι ανώφελα έργα των ἀλλων, αλλά να τα ξεσκεπάζετε. Γι αυτά που κάνουν εκείνοι στα κρυφά είναι ντροπή ακόμα και να μιλάμε. Όταν όμως όλα αυτά έρχονται στο φως, δείχνουν τί είναι. Γιατί ο,τι φανερώνεται γίνεται και το ίδιο φως. Γι αυτό λεει ένας ύμνος: «Ξύπνα εσύ που κοιμάσαι, αναστήσου από τους νεκρούς και ο Χριστός θα σε φωτίσει». Προσέχετε, λοιπόν, καλά πως ζείτε. Μη ζείτε ως ασύνετοι αλλά ως συνετοί. Να χρησιμοποιείται σωστά το χρόνο σας, γιατί ζούμε σε πονηρούς καιρούς. Γι αυτό μην είστε άφρονες, αλλά ν αντιλαμβάνεστε τί θέλει ο Κύριος από σας. Και μη μεθάτε με κρασί, που οδηγεί στην ασωτεία, αλλά να γεμίζετε με το Πνεύμα του Θεού. Να τραγουδάτε στις συνάξεις σας ψαλμούς και ύμνους και πνευματικές ωδές, να ψάλλετε με την καρδιά σας στον Κύριο. EPISTLE: St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 5:8-19 Brethren, walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret; but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light." Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart. Όταν άκουσε το πλήθος που περνούσε, ρώτησε να μάθει τι συμβαίνει. Του είπαν ότι περνάει ο Ιησούς ο Ναζωραίος. Τότε εκείνος άρχισε να φωνάζει δυνατά: «Ιησού Υιέ του Δαβίδ, σπλαχνίσου με!» Αυτοί που προπορεύονταν τον μάλωναν να σωπάσει, εκείνος όμως φώναζε ακόμη πιο δυνατά: «Υιέ του Δαβίδ, σπλαχνίσου με!» Τότε ο Ιησούς στάθηκε κι έδωσε εντολή να τον φέρουν κοντά του. Αυτός πλησίασε, κι εκείνος τον ρώτησε: Τι θέλεις να σου κάνω;» «Κύριε, θέλω ν αποκτήσω το φως μου». Και ο Ιησούς του είπε: «Ν αποκτήσεις το φως σου! Η πίστη σου σε έσωσε». Αμέσως ο τυφλός βρήκε το φως του κι ακολουθούσε τον Ιησού δοξάζοντας το Θεό. Κι όλος ο κόσμος, όταν τον είδε, δοξολογούσε το Θεό. GOSPEL: 14th Sunday of Luke The Gospel According to Luke 18:35-43 At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, 2

3 "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God. PRAYER PRAY EVERY Morning and Evening at a Minimum Remember to make your prayer life one that is a firm rule and not something that is done occasionally or sporadically. It must be done each day morning and evening at a minimum. You need to commit to follow your rule each and every day. Think about certain personal hygiene tasks such as brushing your teeth that you do each day out of habit. You don t forget to do them each day. Your prayer needs to become a habit as strong as these. Prayer must become a daily habit that you never forget. Prayer is essential for the health of our soul Just like the hygiene activities that we do for the health of our body. PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN O God, our heavenly Father, Who loves mankind and is a most merciful and compassionate God, have mercy upon Your servant(s) (names), for whom I humbly pray to You, and whom I commend to Your gracious care and protection. O God, be their guide and guardian in all their endeavors, lead them in the path of Your truth, and draw them nearer to You, so that they may lead a godly and righteous life in Your love and fear, doing Your will in all things. Give them grace and mercy so that they may be patient, hard working, tireless, devout, and charitable. Defend them against the assaults of the enemy, and grant them wisdom and strength to resist all temptation and corruption, and direct them in the way of salvation, through the goodness of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and the prayers of His Holy Mother and the blessed Saints. 6 Guidelines for the Nativity Fast The Nativity Fast Begins (November 15 through December 24) Strict Fast Refrain from meat, fish, oil, wine, dairy, and eggs. The Nativity Fast is one of the four Canonical Fasting Seasons in the Church year. This is a joyous fast in anticipation of the Nativity of Christ. That is the reason it is less strict than other fasting periods. The fast is divided into two periods. The 1st period is November 15th through December 19th when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil) is observed. There is dispensation given for wine and oil on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Similarly, fish, wine, and oil are permitted on Saturdays and Sundays. The 2nd period is December 20th through 24th when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, dairy, fish, wine, and oil) is observed. There is dispensation given for wine and oil only on Saturday and Sunday during this period. Here are the guidelines: ( More fish is allowed) Meat Dairy Fish Wine Oil beef, chicken, pork, turkey, elk, veal, lamb, deer, rabbit, buffalo, and so forth milk, eggs, cheese, butter, yogurt, cream, and so forth fish with a backbone (not including shrimp, octopus, shellfish, squid, or other seafood. Abstain. Abstain. Permitted only on Saturdays and Sundays before December 20. (some permit fish Tuesdays and Thursdays also) (some include all types of alcohol in this category) Permitted only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays before December 20. (some include all types of oil in this category) Permitted only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays before December 20. Abstinence includes refraining from the food and drink mentioned above, as well as from smoking. The Eucharistic Fast means abstaining from at least the previous midnight for communing at a morning Liturgy. 6

9 Prayers at Church Prayer Upon Entering a Church I will come into Your house in the greatness of Your mercy: and in fear I will worship toward Your holy temple. Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before me, that with a clear mind I may glorify You forever, One Divine Power worshiped in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayer upon Leaving a Church Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the presence of all people; a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel. Prayer at the Icon of Christ We reverence Your spotless icon, O gracious Lord, and ask forgiveness of our transgressions, O Christ our God. Because of Your own good will You ascended the Cross in the flesh, that You might deliver those who You had created from the bondage of the enemy. We cry aloud unto You: You have filled all things with joy, O our Savior, for You came to save the world. Amen. Memorials When planning your memorial service please make sure that you contact the office and give the names of the reposed so that Father Gregory has them in advance. In addition, if you would like KOLYVA we ask that you contact Katina Kollias or Did you know this about Memorial Services and Kolyva : Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas on any Feast days of the Lord or any Feast days of the Theotokos. Koliva is boiled wheat with a combination of some or all of the following ingredients: powdered sugar, almonds, ground walnuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon, pomegranate seeds, raisins, anise, parsley and more. Koliva is made for memorials, typically on Saturdays of the Souls, and according to different traditions, the day of a Funeral, the 40 th day after death, 3 rd month, 6 th month, 9 th month, annually, and even sometimes just on big anniversaries only, such as 5 years, 10 years, etc. You may also have Kolyva on the funeral day but ONLY boiled wheat no sweetness is added. Sweetness is added on the 40day memorial and thereafter. In John s Gospel we find this quote, Christ said, Unless a wheat grain falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (John 12:24) As Orthodox Christians we are awaiting the 2 nd Coming and the General Resurrection of the dead, through Christ we have Life! But, remembering the memory of our deceased beloved ones is an opportunity to pray for the souls of the departed as well as a way to help us heal from the death. 9

GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. If you have any further questions about this, please speak with the clergy. Women should remove all lipstick when approaching for Holy Communion. 16 Η διήγηση του θαύματος και οι προεκτάσεις του. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός τέλεσε αυτό το θαύμα της θεραπείας του τυφλού από την Ιεριχώ διαρκούντος του τελευταίου σταδίου της πορείας του προς τα Ιεροσόλυμα, όπου ακολούθησαν τα πάθη, ο σταυρικός θάνατος και η ανάστασή του. Εντασσόμενο μέσα σ αυτό το ιστορικό πλαίσιο, το θαύμα λαμβάνει εξαιρετική σημασία, γιατί φανερώνει την εξουσία του Χριστού να τελεί αυτού του είδους τα θαυμαστά γεγονότα, εξουσία μέσα από την οποία ο Χριστός αποκαλύπτεται, ότι είναι όντως ο Μεσσίας και ο Υιός του Θεού. Λαμβάνει, εξ άλλου, συμβολικό περιεχόμενο, γιατί αυτός ο οποίος δίδει το φως στο σωματικά τυφλό, χαρίζει και το πνευματικό φως και απαλλάσσει από την πνευματική τύφλωση. Εξάλλου ο Χριστός είπε ότι «Εγώ ειμι το φως του κόσμου ο ακολουθών εμοί ου μή περιπατήση εν τη σκοτία, αλλ έξει το φώς της ζωής». (Ιωαν. 8,12). Ο Ιησούς Χριστός, κατά τη διάρκεια της τελευταίας του πορείας προς την Ιερουσαλήμ, διέσχισε την κοιλάδα του Ιορδάνη και ήρθε στην Ιεριχώ. Εκεί κάποιος τυφλός καθόταν στον δρόμο και ζητιάνευε. Από τον ευαγγελιστή Μάρκο πληροφορούμαστε ότι το όνομα του τυφλού ήταν Βαρτιμαίος και ήταν γιος του Τιμαίου (Μαρκ. 10:46). Είναι γνωστό ακόμα και σήμερα το κοινωνικό φαινόμενο για πολλούς ανθρώπους που, ένεκα διαφόρων προβλημάτων σχετικών με την υγεία τους, δεν μπορούσαν να εργαστούν και να βγάλουν τα απαραίτητα για την επιβιωσή τους και κάθονταν στους δρόμους, όπου περίμεναν τη βοήθεια από τους περαστικούς. Ένας από αυτούς ήταν και ο τυφλός της σημερινής ευαγγελικής περικοπής ο οποίος θεραπεύθηκε από τον Ιησού Χριστό. Η τύφλωση του στερούσε τη δυνατότητα γνώσης των γεγονότων. Έτσι όταν άκουσε θόρυβο και οχλαγωγία γύρω του ρώτησε να μάθει τι συμβαίνει. Οι παρευρισκόμενοι άνθρωποι τον πληροφόρησαν ότι περνά από εκεί ο Ιησούς περί του οποίου φαίνεται ότι είχε ήδη ακούσει από πριν. Βλέποντας λοιπόν με τα μάτια της ψυχής του ποίος ήταν ο Ιησούς Χριστός και τι μπορούσε να του προσφέρει άρχισε να φωνάζει «Ιησού Υιέ του Δαβίδ ελέησον με». Ο τίτλος αυτός που δίνει ο τυφλός στον Ιησού Χριστός είναι από τους γνωστούς στη θεολογία ως μεσσιανικός τίτλος, δηλαδή τίτλος που θα λάμβανε ο Μεσσίας όταν θα ερχόταν. Ο τυφλός επομένως αναγνωρίζει και ομολογεί ότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός είναι ο Μεσσίας. Ο Θεοφύλακτος Βουλγαρίας ερμηνεύοντας το χωρίο σημειώνει ότι με το να λέγει ο τυφλός ελέησον με, μας αποκαλύπτει ότι είχε σχηματίσει κάποια εντύπωση εντός του περί της θεότητας του Χριστού και ότι δεν επρόκειτο περί ενός απλού και κοινόυ ανθρώπου. Η παράκληση του τυφλού να τον ελεήσει μας δείχνει την πίστη και την εμπιστοσύνη που είχε, ότι αυτός που περνούσε από κοντά του ήταν ο μόνος που μπορούσε να τον κάνει καλά. Οι παρευρισκόμενοι και όσοι ακολουθούσαν τον Χριστό προσπαθούσαν να επιβάλουν στον τυφλό να σιωπήσει γιατί θεωρούσαν αυθάδεια την αξίωση του να σταματήσει ένα τόσο σημαντικό πρόσωπο. Παρά τις προτροπές των παρευρισκομένων να σιωπήσει, ο τυφλός φώναζε εντονότερα «Υιέ Δαυίδ ελέησον με». Ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος μας λεει ότι κάποιος που κραυγάζει δυνατά αισθάνεται ότι μαζί με τη φωνή που βγάζει αδειάζει και ο ίδιος από την πνοή του, έτσι και αυτός που κραυγάζει στον Κύριο με την καρδία του αδειάζει από κάποια εσωτερική δυσκολία. Η κραυγή η οποία ελκύει την προσοχή του Κυρίου είναι αυτή που βγαίνει μέσα από την καρδία μας. Συνεχίζοντας ο ιερός πατήρ μας λεει ότι ένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά της κραυγής που εισακούει ο Κύριος είναι η προθυμία. Μια τέτοια κραυγή μέσα από τα βάθη της καρδίας του έβγαζε και ο τυφλός της σημερινής ευαγγελικής περικοπής. Ο Θεοφύλακτος Βουλγαρίας μας λεει ότι φώναζε πιο πολύ γιατί η θερμότητα και η επιμονή του στην προσευχή έβγαιναν από την εσωτερική του κατάσταση. Ο Κύριος σταμάτησε την πορεία του και διέταξε να τον φέρουν κοντά του. Ο Κύριος δείχνει με την πράξη του αυτή την άπειρη αγάπη και ευσπλαχνία του προς τον άνθρωπο που του φωνάζει με όλη την δύναμη της καρδίας του. Άκουσε τη φωνή αυτού του άνθρωπου ανάμεσα σε τόσες άλλες επειδή έβγαινε με πίστη και σιγουριά ότι αυτός που βρισκόταν κοντά του μπορούσε να τον κάνει καλά. 16

17 Με την ερώτηση τι θέλεις να σου κάμω, την οποία απευθύνει στον τυφλό ο Χριστός κάνει γνωστό στους ανθρώπους που ήταν μαζεμένοι εκεί ότι δεν επρόκειτο για συνηθισμένο ζητιάνο αλλά για άνθρωπο που έχει πίστη. Η πίστη του αυτή τον οδηγεί στον Μόνο που μπορεί να του δώσει το φως του. Παρόλο που ο Κύριος γνωρίζει τις ανάγκες μας ζητά από εμάς να τις ακούσει. Με το να λέγουμε τις ανάγκες μας στον Κύριο μαθαίνουμε τους εαυτούς μας να εκτιμούν το έλεος το οποίο του ζητούμε. Ο Ιησούς Χριστός, με την εξουσία που είχε, είπε τότε στον τυφλό ανάβλεψον και αυτός απέκτησε το φως του. Η μεγάλη πίστη που είχε ο άνθρωπος αυτός ότι ο Χριστός είναι ο Υιός Δαβίδ ήταν τόσο έντονη που δεν σταματούσε ακόμα και όταν οι άλλοι τον επιτιμούσαν. Ο άγιος Κύριλλος Αλεξανδρείας μας λέγει «οίδεν η πίστις πρός πάντα μάχεσθαι και πάντα νικάν». Δηλαδή γνωρίζει η πίστη να μάχεται με όλα και να νικά. Η πίστη αυτή οδήγησε και τον τυφλό στο να δει τη σωτηρία που είναι ο ίδιος ο Χριστός. Την σωτηρία αυτή είχε δει και ο γέροντας Συμεών που βρισκόταν στο ναό του Σολομώντα, όταν η Παναγία μαζί με τον Ιωσήφ πήραν τον Ιησού στο ναό, σαράντα μέρες μετά τη γεννησή του. Όταν πήρε στην αγκαλιά του το βρέφος Ιησού αναφώνησε «νυν απολύεις τον δουλόν σου δέσποτα, κατά το ρήμα σου εν ειρήνη, ότι είδον οι οφθαλμοί μου το σωτήριόν σου, ο ητοίμασας κατά πρόσωπον πάντων των λαών, φως εις αποκάλυψιν εθνών και δόξαν λαού σου Ισραήλ» (Λουκ ). Δηλαδή τώρα Κύριε μπορείς ν αφήσεις το δούλο σου να πεθάνει ειρηνικά, όπως του υποσχέθηκες, γιατί τα μάτια μου είδαν τον Σωτήρα που ετοίμασες για όλους τους λαούς, φως που θα φωτίσει τα έθνη και θα δοξάσει το λαό σου τον Ισραήλ. Ευθύς όταν είπε ο Ιησούς Χριστός στον τυφλό η πίστη σου σέσωκε σε, την ίδια στιγμή απέκτησε ξανά το φως του και ακολουθούσε τον Ιησού δοξάζοντας τον Θεό μαζί με το πλήθος που ανυμνούσε τον Θεόν όταν είδε το Θαύμα. Έτσι, φαίνεται η θαυματουργική δύναμη του λόγου του Ιησού Χριστού. Ο Κύριος επιτρέπει στον τυφλό να εκδηλώνει την ευγνωμοσύνη του και στο πλήθος τον θαυμασμό του επειδή μετά από λίγο χρόνο ο Χρίστος θα αντιμετωπίσει το πάθος του. Ο Χριστός είχε σαν έργο του να δοξάζεται ο Πατήρ του, όπως είπε ο Ίδιος. Έτσι τα θαύματα του Ιησού Χριστού είναι και ένας τρόπος δοξολογίας του ονόματος του Θεού. Εξ άλλου, σύμφωνα και με τον προφήτη Ησαΐα, «τότε ανοιχθήσονται οφθαλμοί τυφλών, και ώτα κωφών ακούσονται» (Ησ. 35:5). Όταν δηλαδή θα ερχόταν ο Μεσσίας θα έδινε το φώς στους τυφλούς και τα αυτιά των κωφών θα άνοιγαν για να ακούσουν το Ευαγγέλιο της σωτηρίας. Με το θαύμα αυτό της ανάβλεψης του ανθρώπου αυτού αλλά και άλλων σε άλλες περικοπές έχουμε την εκπλήρωση της προφητείας αυτής του προφήτη Ησαΐα. Επίλογος Είναι διαπιστωμένο ότι, όταν από ένα άνθρωπο απουσιάζει μία οποιαδήποτε αίσθηση αναπτύσσει ποικίλες άλλες ικανότητες, οι οποίες αναπληρώνουν τρόπον τινά εκείνο που υστερούν. Επίσης, είναι κοινά διαπιστωμένο ότι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι υποφέρουν από την τύφλωση διακρίνονται για την αγνότητα των αισθημάτων, των σκέψεων και των πράξεών τους. Η όραση είναι μία από τις σημαντικότερες αισθήσεις του ανθρώπου. Αυτή τον φέρει σε επαφή και με αυτή γνωρίζει το φυσικό του περιβάλλον. Όμως, τόσο η όραση όσον και οι λοιπές αισθήσεις καθίστανται μέσα γνωριμίας και του ίδιου του Θεού. Οι αισθήσεις του σώματος καθίστανται τα σημεία επαφής με τις ψυχικές αισθήσεις. Για το λόγο αυτό ο άνθρωπος καλείται να διατηρήσει την αγνότητα των αισθήσεών του. Μόνο με τον τρόπο αυτό μπορεί να αναχθεί προς τον Θεό και να γνωρίσει τον Θεό. Ο Χριστός, σε επίρρωση αυτού του σημαντικού σημείου επαφής του ανθρώπου με τον Θεό, έχει μιλήσει με παραβολικό και συμβολικό τρόπο: «Εις κρίμα εγώ εις τον κόσμον τούτον ήλθον, ίνα οι μη βλέποντες βλέπωσι και οι βλέποντες τυφλοί γένωνται» (Iω. 9:39). Μπορεί να έχουμε ακέραιη την αίσθηση της οράσεως και να διατεινόμαστε με κομπασμό ότι γνωρίζουμε τα πάντα. Στην πραγματικότητα, όμως, υποφέρουμε από πνευματική τύφλωση, από την οποία πρέπει να απαλλαγούμε, όπως ο τυφλός στην Ιεριχώ βρήκε τη σωματική του όραση, για να μπορέσουμε έτσι να δούμε και να γνωρίσουμε την αλήθεια, να γνωρίσουμε τον Θεό. Όταν δεν έχουμε τον πλούτο και το φως της πίστεως παραμένουμε και τυφλοί και πτωχοί και προσπαθούμε να ζητιανέψουμε αυτά που μας προσφέρουν οι τυχαίοι περαστικοί. Όμως, ο Χριστός έρχεται πάντοτε κοντά μας και μας καλεί και μας ρωτά τι θέλουμε. Σ αυτόν πρέπει να απευθυνθούμε για να λάβουμε τον πλούτο της πίστεως, το φως της ζωής και την ελπίδα της σωτηρίας. 17
