3 Isaiah 3:1-7 The destruction of the Judaic Nation (Representing every Christian nation) A comparison: Then 8 th Century BC Present 21 st Century Behold the Lord (Κυριος), the Lord (Δεσπό της ) of hosts, (Pantocrator) takes away from Judah (country) and from Jerusalem (capital) the strong man and the strong woman; the strength (the support by) bread and the strength of water; the mighty man and the experienced soldier; the judge and the prophet and the contemplating foreseer and the presbyter (elder), the military leader, the wonderful (wise) counselor, the skillful artisan (architect), and the prudent listener and I will place as their leader childish men, and mockers will rule over them. The people will collapse and man will go against man and everyone will go against his neighbor. The child will stand arrogantly towards the elder, the dishonorable towards the honorable. Part #3 V3 For Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts takes away The captain of the fifty, the wonderful counselor, the skillful artisan, and the prudent listener. V4 I will give children to be their leaders and mockers shall rule over them. V5 The people collapse, everyone on another and everyone on his neighbor. The child will be arrogant toward the elder, and vulgar toward the honorable. The second part finished with a small explanation of who is this captain of the fifty. And since we discussed the issue of military leadership that will exist when disobedience remains in the land, no more will be said but move to the next part of v3. Next in line to be removed by God due to our disobedience are the wonderful counselor, the admired counselor, and the dignified counselor. He was so called from the aspect of dignity which a man in office would assume. Men and women in various types of leadership will no longer serve and keep the office they hold in high standards. Leaders of the sidewalk mentality. Title holders without essence, depth, sophistication and honor, or dignity. God will also remove the wise architect. By architect it does not mean the one who designs and builds structures, but the knowledgeable, the expert, the man who knows to put things in order with prudence, good sense, and carefulness. Things will be upside-down in all aspects of civilian life. Nothing in its right place! This is indeed a replica of the dark ages of Europe. It will be like building on the sand; no foundations. Let us also look at this issue as follows: who is the skilled craftsman? The one whose skills supports the practical structure of a society and its government. The skilled craftsman was the carpenter, or in our days the electrician, the plumber, the general repair man of household items; even the mechanic! You can see the importance of this position. The warrior was only as mighty as his military weapons. Society functions only as well as the practical structure functions. The recent devastation in Puerto Rico, Texas, etc., basic needs not met yet. Well, just think of the affect on a community after the plumbing and electricity fails for a time. Computers will not be of any help to restore these basic needs. You need the skilled craftsmen architect. The next deprivation is catastrophic. The Lord will remove the prudent listener; the one who will gladly listen to logic. This is terrible! And who will listen to our report, Lord. If this is missing in the nation, even if all the other things exist, nothing will exist in the cities, even if we have prophets and good counselors and wise leaders, when there were no people willing to listen. All are without purpose and goals. Here it does not mean that God will put people in senseless condition but that he will leave them, abandon them, at their own foolishness and insanity. The worse thing that God can do to man is to leave him at his own folly and ignorance. Continued next page...

4 Continued Listen to what the Lord will do to a rebellious people next. Like the previous ones are not enough punishments! The Lord will allow childlike young leaders to come and lead the nation; and mockers shall rule over them This is worse than lawlessness and much more grave, because the one who has no leader, he has just as much deprivation as a leader-guide, but he who has a bad leader has him who sends him to the pit. By young leaders it does not here condemn the age but reveals the childish behavior of those who are many among us, because we have had in the past, young leaders who have done great things. Like King David and his son Solomon. Young Bishop Timothy, with prudence, was managing the affairs of his diocese better that the elders. On the other side of the coin we have people of advanced ~ mature age who have done terrible things. Daniel, Josiah, and Joseph were young but wise leaders and prophets! How many serious, mature in behavior leaders do we have today? And this childish behavior has also entered into the ranks of the priesthood, in the church, and among her members. And he adds, Mockers will rule over them. Christ accused the leaders of his time; actually he called them evil and adulterous (not in sense of romantic fornication) but a conscience that is rotten, infidel, corrupt, loose, depraved; Leaders who are smooth talkers and bring the souls of men to the devil. When wise and great men are removed the vacuum created by it will be filled with mockers and crooks. Christ criticized his contemporaries with the word. Adulterous generation debased. Now you may say Father ~ this has been going on for ages! Yes, sometimes we have good leaders and other times bad leaders. No question about it. What the common person does not count into the equation (and for that reason does not see the spiritual side of how things happen and develop) is that God is active in and among his people always. God sees everything and judges accordingly. And ups ~ good days ~ are His work and the downs ~ bad days ~ are His warnings. He gives good leaders when his people obey. He allows bad leaders to take over when his people rebel. Good or bad leaders are not chosen by the lever of a voting machine or by the hand that moves it. Go ahead ~ blame God you skeptic; use them as an escape goat. We have been warned to be vigilant and observe the times. Perhaps V5 should convince us that we are parallel with the times of Isaiah. The graph has the same shape! The people will collapse, everyone on another and everyone on his neighbor. The child will be arrogant toward the elder and debased vulgar toward the honorable. V5 and V6 are daily news on the screen, in every corner of the world. Of course this is happening because our foundations have rotted away. Soon great confusion will take over the whole world because the foundations have been shaken. It is a natural result. Civility will collapse. V5 and V6 describe the state of anarchy and confusion which could exist under the reign of childish leaders. These leaders will place heavy burden on the people; Great demands to satisfy their uncontrollable thirst for lust and power. The result of this oppression will be for everyone to oppress the other. In turn citizen against citizen. There will be a state of mutual strife. This condition will also rise in democratic Christian nations. We have seen clear pictures of this sad reality in the cities of our country. Individuals fighting other individuals. Groups of people with various slogans fighting other groups which support other ideologies. Whole neighborhoods up in arms. Language used without human dignity. Young men and women going against people of authority. Students taking over college campuses. Teachers ridiculed. Respect for white hair exists not. Who gives his seat on a bus for an older person? Young men and women who struggle to remain pure in heart are mocked and ridiculed in front of the so called wise of this world. Lack of leadership. Total loss of principles. Upside down values. No building up but tearing down. The description of Isaiah s times fitted perfectly in our times To be Continued

8 THE THEOPHANY OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST (January 6) Apolytikion in the First Tone Lord, when You were baptized in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit, in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone You appeared to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has left its mark upon us. With fuller understanding we sing to You: "You came, You were made manifest, the unapproachable light." Reading: About the beginning of our Lord's thirtieth year, John the Forerunner, who was some six months older than Our Saviour according to the flesh, and had lived in the wilderness since his childhood, received a command from God and came into the parts of the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto the remission of sins. Then our Saviour also came from Galilee to the Jordan, and sought and received baptism though He was the Master and John was but a servant. Whereupon, there came to pass those marvellous deeds, great and beyond nature: the Heavens were opened, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove upon Him that was being baptized and the voice was heard from the Heavens hearing witness that this was the beloved Son of God, now baptized as a man (Matt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:1-22). From these events the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the great mystery of the Trinity were demonstrated. It is also from this that the present feast is called "Theophany," that is, the divine manifestation, God's appearance among men. On this venerable day the sacred mystery of Christian baptism was inaugurated; henceforth also began the saving preaching of the Kingdom of the Heavens. SYNAXIS OF JOHN THE HOLY GLORIOUS PROPHET, BAPTIST, & FORERUNNER (January 7) Apolytikion in the Second Tone The memory of the just is celebrated with hymns of praise, but the Lord's testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner; for thou hast proved to be truly even more venerable than the Prophets, since thou was granted to baptize in the running waters Him Whom they proclaimed. Wherefore, having contested for the truth, thou didst rejoice to announce the good tidings even to those in Hades: that God hath appeared in the flesh, taking away the sin of the world and granting us great mercy. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Second Tone The Jordan accepted Your presence in the flesh and reversed its course in fear. John, fulfilling the spiritual ministry, fell back in awe. The ranks of Angels, seeing You in the flesh, baptized in the river, were amazed, and all who were in darkness were filled with light, praising You who appeared and enlightened all. Reading: Today we celebrate the Synaxis in honour of the most sacred Forerunner, since he ministered at the Mystery of the Divine Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rest from labour. Fish allowed

Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas Nothing in the excess This inscription from the temple of Apollo at Delphi can save us money, lots of money, by improving our health. "Meden agan", meaning "nothing in the excess said our ancestors, the ancient Greeks. They had posted that inscription on the most famous oracle not only of the Greek world, and the world of the "barbarians," Delphic Oracle. It was not the result of long-term, expensive scientific research, but the logical conclusion of the observation of the world around them. The world of the ancient Greeks in Greece was usually terse, poor and chaste. They never had many material possessions. They used to migrate and travel because Greece was poor and the food was not enough for everyone. It would not be difficult for them to observe the habits of other peoples, whom nature was generous and it had given plenty of goods and to conclude "Meden Agan". It is oxymoron to see on TV one advertisement for some new or old food and immediately after it, another advertisement how to lose weight! One advertisement promotes food, and another let us know about the dangers caused on our health by excessive weight. We have wasted billions of dollars to re-conclude Meden Agan." It is really frustrating to have contests for the eating more hot dogs champion, which brings to mind the "Lucullus banquets" of the Romans, who according to some authors could force themselves to vomit what they just had eaten to be able to eat again soon. I think our empire looks more to Rome than in Athens. And it is not only the food but all material and not-material goods. Cars, expensive vacations, houses and larger, more expensive clothes, thirst for more power and authority, and there is no end to it. Cleobulus of Lindos (6th century BC) said, "Metron Ariston" (moderation is excellent, the way that is). Our big Hierarch Gregory Nanzianus said "You drank the kafkon (wine) again, you again lost your mind" for the drunkard Emperor Nikephoros Phocas. How true, how much wisdom is included in these two phrases. Our struggle is how we can find our mental in the plethora of an archipelago of goods and temptations that knocking on our door. The Good Luck, i.e. Eu + Tyche (Luck), should not be based in the excess but in good health, and balance between our body and spirit. Let us observe the world around us like the Ancient Greeks did to appreciate our blessings. Many times a conversation with a mere coffee with a friend made us feel really happy. "The quality is not in the amount."

20 REMOVAL OF THE RELICS OF JOHN CHRYSOSTOM, ARCHBISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE (January 27) Apolytikion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone The grace of your words illuminated the universe like a shining beacon. It amassed treasures of munificence in the world. It demonstrated the greatness of humility, teaching us by your own words; therefore, O Father John Chrysostom, intercede to Christ the Logos for the salvation of our souls. Kontakion in the First Tone The holy and august Church is mystically gladdened today on the translation of thy holy relics. And though she had kept them hid in concealment like precious gold, by thine intercessions she unceasingly granteth, unto them that praise thee, the divine grace of healing, O Father John Chrysostom. Reading: This event took place on this day in the year 438, when Saint Theodosius the Younger had been Emperor for thirty years; he was the son of Arcadius, and Eudoxia, who had exiled Saint John. The Archbishop of Constantinople at that time was Proclus, who had been the Saint's disciple. SYNAXIS OF THE THREE HIERARCHS: BASIL THE GREAT, GREGORY THE THEOLOGIAN, & JOHN CHRYSOSTOM Apolytikion in the First Tone The three most great luminaries of the Three-Sun Divinity have illumined all of the world with the rays of doctrines divine and true; they are the sweetly-flowing rivers of wisdom, who with godly knowledge have watered all creation in clear and mighty streams: The great and sacred Basil, and the Theologian, wise Gregory, together with the renowned John, the famed Chrysostom of golden speech. Let us all who love their divinely-wise words come together, honouring them with hymns; for ceaselessly they offer entreaty for us to the Trinity. Kontakion in the Second Tone Receive, O Lord, the Sacred Heralds who preached God, the pinnacle of Teachers, unto the enjoyment of Your riches and rest. You have received their labors and their suffering as being above and beyond all fruitful offering. For You alone glorify Your Saints. Reading: This common feast of these three teachers was instituted a little before the year 1100, during the reign of the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus, because of a dispute and strife that arose among the notable and virtuous men of that time. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling among themselves over which of the three was the greatest. Furthermore, each party, in order to distinguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the contention, the three Saints appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with great skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also the composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of a Man's Life. In his old age, he retired from his episcopal see and again took up the monastic life in a monastery in Constantinople. He reposed during the reign of the aforementioned Emperor Alexis Comnenus ( ).

21 December 12th at the Emmanuel Dining Room East We sincerely thank the Karakasidis Family, who once again sponsored and served this dining room in December, as they have done for many years now in honor of their loved ones. 110 men, women and children enjoyed a nice warm luncheon meal that day, with the family helping out in the kitchen. The diners also enjoyed an extra special Christmas treat on December 22nd, kindly donated by Mrs. Maria Burpulis, given in memory of her dear husband, Costa Burpulis. We thank them all for giving of their time and charity to this great organization! We look forward to serving again on Friday, January 12th with the new host and sponsor for this month. All are welcome to help serve on the 12th of every month! We sincerely thank all the individuals and organizations who generously give of their time and charity to this dining room and ministry! Various groups and individuals from our church donate the food and host the luncheon meal at the 3rd and Walnut St location. New sponsors are needed to fill a few months, so if you would like to become a part of this worthy service project with your family, friends or church organization, please contact Nikkie Tsakataras at or Tina Ganiaris at for more information. A Very Happy and Healthy New Year to all! Holy Trinity Food Pantry As we enter into this New Year of 2018 with a new list of resolutions to improve ourselves, our environment and our communities, let us not forget the most Christian one of all giving of ourselves to help those in need. The Food Bank of Delaware has made a plea to schools, businesses and faith based organizations to hold food drives for more donations as the need continues to grow and help is drastically down. Jars of peanut butter, canned tuna, cans of hearty soups, pastas, baby food, cereals, coffee, tea are just a few examples of the non-perishable items we all have in abundance in our pantries that are much in need. This year we have delivered hundreds of pounds of food to such pantries as the Sunday Breakfast Mission, the House of Joseph, the Salvation Army, St. Stephen s Pantry, and the Claymont Community Center. Thanks to all who have given so generously and selflessly. Let us remember to teach our children at home the lesson of Christian Charity! So, as we begin this new year, let's each make a resolution to fill those food bins every Sunday! Happy New Year!

Hellenic School of Holy Trinity, DE Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas The Greek School celebrated Christmas in our traditional ancient way on Sunday, December 10 th in the Community Hall. The pupils of our school sang the Greek Christmas Carols. In this way, they thanked the Community, but especially their parents, for their support. Also, on that day, the Greek School celebrated together with all the children of our community the annual "Breakfast with Santa (Hagios Vasilis)"! The difference of only a single month in the preparation of the pupils for the Christmas Carols compared to the one-week preparation for the 28 October (OXI DAY) celebration was obvious. The progress of the pupils was indeed impressive. The Community Hall was filled with the happy voices of our children, our future that is. The teachers, the real laborers that is, and I also met and discussed various ways of improving the teaching of our language, history and culture. As a first step, we decided to reintroduce the use of the computers on the one hand in class as a teaching aid, and on the other hand at home with the aid of apps. Do not forget that Rome was not built in one day! Merry Christmas! We wish you a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2018!
