3 Isaiah 3:1-7 The destruction of the Judaic Nation (Representing every Christian nation) A comparison: Then 8 th Century BC Present 21 st Century Part #4 Verse 7: When a man takes hold of his brother or his father s servant, saying, You have clothing; you be our ruler and let my food be under your roof. In that day, I will protest saying, I will not be your ruler, for in my house there is neither food nor clothing. I will not be the ruler of this people. A society in total desperation! No one to lead! St. Theodore of Cyrus makes this observation. There will be such great dearth of rulers and such great disorder will prevail over them, that they will trust their leadership to the first comer. Everyone will think that the leadership is so much to be avoided that whoever is summoned to rule will say, I will not be a ruler of this people! St. John Chrysostom comments, It seems to me that a particularly horrible siege is evoked here which has reduced them to worse distress or, without having a siege, an intolerable famine (due to their rebellion against God and his commandments), a tremendous dearth of necessities. He is using a current expression here. It is the same as many people say, If the whole town should be offered for a penny, I would not be able to buy it. Thereby showing their extreme indigence; the Prophet also says of one sold the magi statures for only a garment and a mouthful of bread, there would be no buyer, so great would be the penury of necessities! Therefore, due to the lawlessness and crooked governing there will come the dearth of basic necessities and if there is one in the city who has a loaf of bread to eat and one garment to cover his nakedness will be considered by the masses worthy to lead the nation. But even such a person will refuse to become the leader. The dissolvement of a nation as we know it. Please do not think within yourself that such a condition is impossible to materialize, even in the richest country that we reside in. If the Lord God commanded it to be so even among his own chosen people Israel why not to a rebellious and unethical nation and/or world of our times. Again, the description here in verses 6-7 is one of great calamity and anarchy so great would be the ruin and danger that men would be unwilling to be chosen to the office of princes and rulers, (presidents, governors, etc.) and none could be found who would desire to possess the highest honors of the nation: generally men and women aspire to office. Millions they expense in order to enter the courts of politics but here they were unwilling on account of the disordered and ruined state of affairs, even to accept of it! This is not doomsday talk. It is in the Bible, it happened, it was allowed to happen by the Lord God. Are we moving towards the same fate? The Lord Jesus Christ said, watch the times, study the events. He also said, Just before the second coming, nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. A perfect opportunity for the antichrist to take over the world and all that is in it and all those who live in it. Continued next page...
4 Continued St Paul correctly teaches that just before the appearance of the lawless one antichrist the great apostasy falling away from the Lord will come first. St. Paul is not talking of this great apostasy outside the Church (non-believers), but within the Church, among Christians. Besides all the unethical laws are legalized within Christian countries, for sure! St Nilus the Ascetic (5 th c) left to the churches various works of faith and the following prophecy (some say that the following text was written by an unknown man in the 14 th century or by St Nilus the mynh streamer). After the year 1900, toward the middle of the twentieth century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time of the advent of the antichrist approaches, people s minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonor and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable. Peoples appearances will change and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to their shamelessness of dress and style of hair. These people will be cruel and will be like wild animals because of the temptations of the antichrist. There will be no respect for parents and elders, love will disappear, and Christian pastors, bishops, and priests will become vain men, completely failing to distinguish the right-hand way from the left. At that time, the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and creed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasure. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds, and murder will rule in society. At that future time, due to the power of such great crimes and licentiousness, people will be deprived of the grace of the Holy Spirit which they received in Holy Baptism and equally of remorse, the Churches of God will be (no repentance) deprived of God-fearing and pious leaders-pastors and woe to the Christians remaining in the world at that time; they will completely lose their faith because they will lack the opportunity of seeing the light of true knowledge from anyone at all. Then they will separate themselves out of the world in holy refuges in search of lightening their spiritual sufferings, but everywhere they will meet obstacles and heavy restraints. And all this will result from the fact that the antichrist wants to be lord over everything and everyone in the world and he will produce (fake-deceiving) miracles and fantastic signs. This prophecy definitely sounds like an expounding writing of St. Paul s words and of Christ s prophecy of the last days. But it is right on, the subject and events and issues and even more expressly of our times compared with other previous centuries. This letter ends our series of lessons on Chapter 3:1-7 of Isaiah. Let him who has ears listen to what God has to say to the Church!

12 A History of the Wilmington Greek Community The site of Holy Trinity was once the estate of T. Coleman DuPont. Mr. DuPont was great-grandson of E. I. DuPont, the founder of the former DuPont Company. He was President of the company from He also served the state as U.S. Senator. Mr. DuPont is probably best known for his foresight and personal funding of the creation of the DuPont Highway. There was a story shared with me many years ago that 808 N. Broom Street was sold to the community with the stipulation that a church would be erected on the site. We have engaged the Delaware State Archives to research and see if there is documentation to support this claim. Here are two photos of the estate. Many older parishioners remember the old church/ community center which was featured a couple of months ago. That building used to be the stables/garage for the DuPont family modes of transportation. The first photo shows the estate from the Broom Street perspective of what is now the Morris James law office. The second photo shows the back of the estate from what is now the south parking lot and the southwest tip of the current community center. Anyone interested is sharing old photographs and memories, please contact me at or via at klezaras@gmail.com. We need old photos of your family s restaurants/businesses as well. If you are a college student looking for Independent Study credit, please reach out to me as we can help each other. Please visit our Facebook page (Growing Up Greek in Wilmington) where people have been sharing their stories and photos for years. It is a private group, so please ask to be added via Facebook or send me your so I can invite you to join the group.
13 GOYA NEWS Hello everyone, Our GOYAns are busy preparing for our annual Basketball Tournament to be held February 17th & 18th. Around twelve Greek Orthodox Parishes from our area and other states want to be part of this youth event this year. This annual Basketball Tournament is our biggest fund-raising event, so we count on our many advisors, parents and parishioners to make this a successful event. Please let us know if you can help in any way because your time and talent is much appreciated. Each year we kindly ask parishioners to place an ad in the journal book and many have responded positively in the past. If you would like to place an AD to support our GOYAns, please see any GOYAn (we will have a table at coffee hour) or call the church office at , or use the form in this bulletin. Looking ahead in March, our GOYAns will participate in Sights and Sounds to be held on Saturday, March 3rd in Upper Darby. We plan on participating in game night at the Ronald McDonald house sometime in March. Game night gives us an opportunity to interact with the children from the Ronald McDonald house and also gives their parents a much-needed break. Sincerely, Eva Maravelias GOYA Skate Night December 2017

17 HARALAMBOS THE HOLY MARTYR February 10 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone O wise Haralambos, you were proven an unshakable pillar of the Church of Christ; an ever-shining lamp of the universe. You shone in the world by your martyrdom. You delivered us from the moonless night of idolatry O blessed one. Wherefore, boldly intercede to Christ that we may be saved. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone O Priest-martyr, athlete, champion Haralambos, your relics are a priceless treasure of the Church. Wherefore she rejoices, glorifying the Creator. Reading: This Saint was a priest of the Christians in Magnesia, the foremost city of Thessaly, in the diocese having the same name. He contested during the reign of Alexander Severus ( ), when Lucian was Proconsul of Magnesia. At the time of his martyrdom the Saint was 103 years of age. St. Haralambos is commemorated on February 10th, with the exception when this date falls on the Saturday of the Souls preceeding Lent or on Clean Monday (the first day of Lent), in which case the feast is celebrated on February 9th. POLYCARP THE HOLY MARTYR & BISHOP OF SMYRNA February 23 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone As a sharer of the ways and a successor to the throne of the Apostles, O inspired of God, thou foundest discipline to be a means of ascent to divine vision. Wherefore, having rightly divided the word of truth, thou didst also contest for the Faith even unto blood, O Hieromartyr Polycarp. Intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved. Kontakion in the First Tone Through godly virtues, thou broughtest forth for the Lord God much spiritual fruit, O thou most blessed Hierarch, and so didst prove worthy of God thy Lord, O wise Polycarp. Wherefore, on this day we who have all been enlightened through thy holy words extol thy praiseworthy mem'ry and glorify Christ the Lord. Reading: This apostolic and prophetic man, and model of faith and truth, was a disciple of John the Evangelist, successor of Bucolus (Feb. 6), and teacher of Irenaeus (Aug. 23). He was an old man and full of days when the fifth persecution was raised against the Christians under Marcus Aurelius. When his pursuers, sent by the ruler, found Polycarp, he commanded that they be given something to eat and drink, then asked them to give him an hour to pray; he stood and prayed, full of grace, for two hours, so that his captors repented that they had come against so venerable a man. He was brought by the Proconsul of Smyrna into the stadium and was commanded, "Swear by the fortune of Caesar; repent, and say, 'Away with the atheists.'" By atheists, the Proconsul meant the Christians. But Polycarp, gazing at the heathen in the stadium, waved his hand towards them and said, "Away with the atheists." When the Proconsul urged him to blaspheme against Christ, he said: "I have been serving Christ for eighty-six years, and He has wronged me in nothing; how can I blaspheme my King Who has saved me?" But the tyrant became enraged at these words and commanded that he be cast into the fire, and thus he gloriously expired about the year 163. As Eusebius says, "Polycarp everywhere taught what he had also learned from the Apostles, which also the Church has handed down; and this alone is true" (Eccl. Hist., Book IV, ch. 14,15). 19 Judgment Sunday (Meatfare Sunday) Reading: The foregoing two parables - especially that of the Prodigal Son - have presented to us God's extreme goodness and love for man. But lest certain persons, putting their confidence in this alone, live carelessly, squandering upon sin the time given them to work out their salvation, and death suddenly snatch them away, the most divine Fathers have appointed this day's feast commemorating Christ's impartial Second Coming, through which we bring to mind that God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge, Who recompenses to each according to his deeds. It is the aim of the holy Fathers, through bringing to mind that fearful day, to rouse us from the slumber of carelessness unto the work of virtue, and to move us to love and compassion for our brethren. Besides this, even as on the coming Sunday of Cheese-fare we commemorate Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight - which exile is the beginning of life as we know it now - it is clear that today's is reckoned the last of all feasts, because on the last day of judgment, truly, everything of this world will come to an end. All foods, except meat and meat products, are allowed during the week that follows this Sunday. Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Second Tone When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You. Resurrectional Kontakion in the Second Tone You rose from the tomb, O Savior all-powerful, and Hades beheld the marvel and was struck with fear, and the dead were rising up, and creation beholds and rejoices with You, * and Adam is also exultant; O my Savior, and the world ever sings Your praise. Seasonal Kontakion in the First Tone O God, when You come upon the earth in glory, the whole world will tremble. A river of fire will bring all before Your Judgment Seat and the books will be opened, and everything in secret will become public. At that time, deliver me from the fire which never dies, and enable me to stand by Your right hand, O Judge most just. Reading courtesy of Narthex Press / Resurrectional courtesy of St. Gregory Palamas Monastery Seasonal courtesy of Narthex Press / Icon courtesy of St. Isaac's Skete Forgiveness Sunday Reading: The Holy Fathers have appointed the commemoration of Adam's exile from the Paradise of delight here, on the eve of the holy Forty-day Fast, demonstrating to us not by simple words, but by actual deeds, how beneficial fasting is for man, and how harmful and destructive are insatiety and the transgressing of the divine commandments. For the first commandment that God gave to man was that of fasting, which the first-fashioned received but did not keep; and not only did they not become gods, as they had imagined, but they lost even that blessed life which they had, and they fell into corruption and death, and transmitted these and innumerable other evils to all of mankind. The Godbearing Fathers set these things before us today, that by bringing to mind what we have fallen from, and what we have suffered because of the insatiety and disobedience of the firstfashioned, we might be diligent to return again to that ancient bliss and glory by means of fasting and obedience to all the divine commands. Taking occasion from today's Gospel (Matt. 6:14-21) to begin the Fast unencumbered by enmity, we also ask forgiveness this day, first from God, then from one another and all creation. Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Third Tone Let the heavens sing for joy, and let everything on earth be glad. For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. Resurrectional Kontakion in the Third Tone From the tomb You rose today, O Lord of tender compassion, also from the gates of death You led us out, O our Savior. On this day is Adam dancing and Eve rejoices, * and with them together Patriarchs and the Prophets are unceasingly extolling the divine power of Your authority. Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal of the Second Tone O Master, Prudence, Guide of Wisdom, Instruction to the foolish and Defender of the poor, strengthen my heart and grant it discernment. Give me words, Word of the Father, for behold, I shall not keep my lips from crying out to You, "O Merciful One, have mercy on me who has fallen." Hellenic School of Holy Trinity, DE Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas Dear parents and guardians, we will soon celebrate the great day of our nation, the Greek Independence Day, which is known as March 25, This great day put Hellas back on the world map as an independent country. Our school teachers have already begun preparing the pupils for the celebration of this great day. Adequate preparation of pupils and students for the Christmas Carols and their excellent performance is a guarantee for a successful celebration of this great day. On Sunday, January 28th, a few pupils of the older classes of our school will take place in the celebration of the Greek Letters at the Church of St. Thomas in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The teacher Mrs. Kalliopi Tsaganou and the President of the Parents and Guardians Association Mrs. Stavroula Pennia will be honored for their contribution and their work for our Greek School. Let's congratulate both of them! Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas Similarities and Differences There are some things we think they mean the same thing, but they mean something different. Although sometimes, they sound the same, small differences determine their specific application and use in life. What is the difference and what is the similarity between "Democracy" and "Republic?" The word Democracy is composed from two words of the Greek language, "Demos = common man" and "state = power, rule." The word Republic is derived from two words of the Latin language, "Res = case thing" and publica = about people." Direct democracy was invented and applied in ancient Athens. A representative democracy is a system where citizens of a country vote for government representatives to handle legislation and ruling the country on their behalf. The main feature of democracy is: government by the powerful majority. In a democracy, the individual, or any group of individuals that make up a minority, have no or minimal protection against the unlimited power of the majority. Republic is defined as a constitutionally limited government of the representative type, created by a written constitution, which was approved by the people (electorate), which can be modified only by the people. Its responsibilities are divided between three separate services, executive, legislative and judicial. Historically, the first Republic was created in Massachusetts in Diet is derived from the Greek verb the verb "diaetasthae" = pass my life; Fasting is derived from the German word fasten, and it means to hold firmly, "holding to observance". Most religions use periods of fasting as proof of faith or repentance and it is an opportunity for a spiritual meditation and reflection. Fasting is defined as abstinence from some foods, usually meat and dairy products and/or alcoholic beverages for a long time. Overall, Orthodox Christians should abstain from these foods for about 6 months per year. Diet is the deliberate selection of food to control body weight or nutrient intake. The diet is usually combined with physical exercise for effective results. Fasting and diet have common parts but they are not necessarily identical. The most common points of both are the will and perseverance of the individual to abstain voluntarily from beloved food for some time.

25 Holy Trinity Food Pantry As we deliver food to the various food closets scattered among our city, we see the poverty first hand. An ABC newscaster recently headlined his newscast by quoting alarming figures and also alerting his listeners that food closets will be very short of food as more and more Americans depend on them for their only meal! In order to accommodate everyone who needs food and not be turned away, these city-wide food closets depend on donations from people like you and me. Please continue to bring in your food donations and when you can, double up on basic food items such as cereals, baby food, and pasta. Anything that will not spoil, such as: Canned fish, vegetables, beans, fruit, meat, soups, sugar, tea, coffee, flour, pancake mixes and syrup, cereals, pasta and sauces, baby food, formula, peanut butter and jelly, apple sauce, crackers, cookies ~ anything that will not spoil. Our present economy is bringing more and more people to the food pantries around our city for their daily meals. Please continue to fill our bins so that we can feed those in need for, as Orthodox Christians, we are to share our many blessings with the less fortunate. When you go food shopping, buy and extra can or two so that those in need are never turned away. January 12th at the Emmanuel Dining Room East The Ganiaris Family sponsored and served this dining room on Friday, January 12th, in loving memory of their father, Fr. Stamatios Ganiaris, honoring the day that would have been his 90th birthday. Dimitra Pappoulis and Tina Ganiaris worked in the kitchen, serving 90 men, women and children a nice warm luncheon meal. The diners enjoyed some extra treats to celebrate the new year. We thank them all for giving of their time and charity to this great organization! We look forward to serving again on Monday, February 12th with the new host and sponsor for this month. All are welcome to help serve on the 12th of every month! We sincerely thank all the individuals and organizations who generously give of their time and charity to this dining room and ministry! Various groups and individuals from our church donate the food and host the luncheon meal at the 3rd and Walnut St location. New sponsors are needed to fill a few months, so if you would like to become a part of this worthy service project with your family, friends or church organization, please contact Nikkie Tsakataras at or Tina Ganiaris at for more information.
