3 Father Christos Message REFLECTION FOR THE NEW YEAR 2015 Many times we hear Christians say, "I rely on my instincts, I know when something is wrong or right. The first I disregard, the second I follow." Others say, "I know from experience, for so many years I have been doing this type of work." We do not want to criticize natural instincts or years of experience, but there must be a higher standard than these, which can complete them. Modern man has in his disposal so many modern equipment, and years of technological advantage in front of him, and yet many times the predictions on weather patterns are wrong and the results are catastrophic. We have spent countless man-hours and billions of dollars trying to predict, locate, and warn people about a coming natural disaster. Scientists say even a few seconds of advance warning is worth the expenditure. Let us not condemn science, for that is also from God. However, what I want to stress this time of the year, when the new year has dawned, is the following: Can we use a higher standard? Can we turn toward an 'eternal instinct'? An eternal experience? An eternal 'technology'? THE WORD OF GOD!!! Can we this year allow the eternal Word of God, the everlasting and unchangeable, revealed in the Holy Scriptures, to drive our lives, to keep us on the right path, to become our light, and to complete our lives? To become our companion and adviser; our guide! THE WAY! Christ said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me, will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness."(john 8:14). The reason Christ opened the eyes of the blind was not so much that he could see the physical world-for this is temporary-but rather to see the spiritual world, the eternal light, which has no beginning and no end, CHRIST THE FATHER OF LIGHTS. No matter how we evaluate it, whatever standards we use to evaluate the year of the Lord 2014, as to determine if it was a good or bad year, if we do not see it in the light of Christ, we have missed the mark, we have failed, we have become bankrupt. If we have not obeyed His will on earth as it is obeyed in heaven and not followed His commandments; if we have not tried our ultimate best to approach His glory with a humble heart and a contrite spirit; if we have not let go of hatred, anger, envy, all forms of sin in our hearts, we indeed have thrown another year to the waste basket. Therefore, was 2014 a profitable or unprofitable year? It all depends if we followed the star of Bethlehem like the Magi and brought gifts-our hearts- to Jesus or rejected Him as Herod did and all those living in the city. Let us then this New Year 2015 make Christ our strength, our rock, our cornerstone and deliverer and light. Christ and only Christ can give us a victorious, blessed, joyous and peaceful New Year. Victory belongs to the righteous. Let us then make it our goal this year to approach the likes of Abraham-the man of faith; Isaac and Jacob the beloved; Job the man of patience. He alone can grant us a new spirit, His spirit; a new heart, His heart. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, let us take the challenge and try to imitate the Theotokos. Look at her hand how she always points at her Son and God. Let us imitate the many Saints and Martyrs who confessed Jesus as their Lord and Savior under severe and dangerous conditions. Let us follow His command, "search the scriptures", and learn of His eternal wisdom. May He bless you and visit you and yours throughout the New Year 2015, Father Christos
4 January 2015 Dear Parishioners, President's Message Ιανουάριος 2015 Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες, I hope you enjoyed a blessed Christmas season celebrating the birth of our Savior and wish you all a healthy and joyous New Year. The Ecclesiastical holidays continue and I look forward to seeing you at the Epiphany Services. As the calendar turns to 2015, let us continue our commitment to our Church with increased vigor: attending services in a timely fashion and as often as possible; bringing our children to Sunday School and, again, in a timely fashion; fulfilling our annual pledge to our church; injecting positive energy and dialogue coupled with a willingness to work to help the parish prosper and grow Also, please remember to contact the church office soon to schedule your home blessing and enjoy a unique opportunity to welcome Father Chris into your house and refresh your home with the spirit of our Lord. Our parish is about to embark on a historic restoration of our Church. The project will repair deteriorating masonry by restoring and securing the building brick by brick. The process will evolve over several phases but regardless of the commitment and resources necessary to achieve our goals, there is no doubt that our Holy Trinity Community is capable of meeting this challenge and ensuring the integrity of the Church for years to come. In 2014, we enjoyed our most successful Festival ever. Let us not become complacent; rather, we must challenge ourselves and recognize the work begins now if we hope to potentially enjoy similar successes this year. To this end, we are still in need of persons to Chair this 2015 s Festival. Those individuals who have chaired and been integral to the enormous success of our recent Festivals George Tsavalas, Tom Diamanty, and Demetri Halakos are committed to supporting our new Chairpersons. Please contact the church office if you have interest or recommendations. Finally, with the New Year, we welcome two new members to our Parish Council: Leon Fotakos and Peter Xarhoulakos. We are indebted to those members who are leaving the Parish Council after years of dedicated service, Jim Maravelias and Catherine Stathakis. Thank you to these individuals and all who work for the benefit of our Community. Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas 200 drachmas per month investment The noun investment is derived from the verb invest (in+vest), which entered the English language ca 14th century: "to clothe in the official robes of an office" from Latin investire "to clothe in, cover, surround," from in "in, into" + vestire "to dress, clothe". The meaning "use money to produce profit" first attested in 1610s in connection with the East Indies trade, and is probably a borrowing of Italian investire (ca 13c century) from the same Latin root, via the notion of giving one's capital a new form. However, there are investments in life that are not made with a view to future financial gain, but for the spiritual uplifting of human. The most efficient investment of all is education. I have wondered many times what I consider the most efficient investments of my life, except my family. I concluded that the most efficient one was my education from primary school to university in Greece and America. But the less significant one, that I never could imagine that it will be proven extremely important in the future was the learning of English in a preparatory school for foreign languages in my neighborhood in Athens. Like the vast majority of Greek students, I attended English language classes for 4 years, 3 hours a week, from September to June. The cost was 200 drachmas per month, equivalent to 6 dollars, a total of 8, drachmas, about 267 dollars of that time. That was a considerable amount of income for my family, like for most Greek families. For any investment to be profitable over time, constant attention of it is needed. In this case, I invested many hours in improving the learning of the English language by borrowing books without fee from the Greek- American Union, and not hesitating to converse with foreigners in Greece to obtain facility in the oral speech. My immigration in the US was not in my thoughts, nor in my plans. "Never say never"! I planned to stay in USA for only two years. After 33 years, I have a career and a family in US, just like many other immigrants. Knowledge and facility in the use of the English language, in conjunction with the rest of my education, proved my passport for a successful presence in US. In addition, knowledge of the ancient form of the Greek language and elementary Latin were proven valuable assistance to the use of the English language. I wonder why our children after six years of studying Greek at the Greek afternoon schools, three hours per week, can make a simple conversation with great difficulty. Is it because they do not consider it as a necessary investment for their future or something else? Knowledge is never lost, but it follows us everywhere and always.
13 Matthew 6:2 4 Please support the work of St. Elpida So, when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. This is the truth I tell you they are paid in full. But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms giving may be in secret, and your Father who sees what happens in secret will give you your reward in full. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Thirteen years ago, in the year 2002, your Parish Council created the St. Elpida organization, to provide a means by which our parishioners could give alms in secret, to support the many ministries of our Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. In all those years, a few kind men, women and young people have been working quietly and with conscientiousness to provide according to the means of St. Elpida support for the ministries of our church. Till now, your contributions have helped to provide thousands of meals to the needy at the Emmanuel Dining Room at Jackson Street in Wilmington, have assisted to reduce the pain of the victims of hurricanes, assisted to feed the hungry people in Greece, and aided in the work of our Orthodox clergy, to bring the Gospel of Christ to thousands of families who are joining the Orthodox churches of Africa daily, churches which are headed by the ancient but very poor Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa. All this has been accomplished silently through your kindness and generosity, for which no one has thank you, for only you and God know your kindness and compassion! Give generously and contribute not only financially, something which we deeply appreciate, but also with your talent and your presence. Please, also respond to the monthly call of your Church for help, on the 30 th of each month, at the Emmanuel Dining Room of Jackson Street. At this time, as we celebrate the coming in the world of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who was born in a humble stable, I ask you to please remember those in need, and help support the work of St. Elpida. Please remember that, it is the only means by which your contribution, down to the last penny, will reach the beneficiaries of your generosity. 15 Vasilopita Observance One of the most beautiful and inspiring traditions and customs of the Orthodox Christian Church is the observance of Vasilopita. It is this annual observance, together with many other traditions of our Church, which joins our Orthodox Faith and heritage with the history of the Christian religion itself. The word Vasilopita is a compound Greek word which means the sweet bread of St. Basil. The annual observance of the Vasilopita originated from the Feast Day of St. Basil on January 1 st and the Baptism of Jesus Christ on Epiphany Day on January 6 th. During the first three centuries, the birth of Christ and Epiphany Day were celebrated on the same day. During the fourth century, one of the greatest Fathers of the Christian Church appeared on the spiritual horizon of the Orthodox Faith. His name was Basil and he was Bishop of Caesarea, Cappadocia (Asia Minor) during the fourth century. He was born four years after the first Ecumenical Council held in the year 325AD. St Basil was one of the three Cappadocian Fathers of the Church (the others were Gregory of Nazianzus, his best friend and his brother, Gregory of Nyssa.) St. Basil was the first person in human history to establish an orphanage for little children. He also founded the first Christian hospital in the world. His fame as a Holy Man spread like wildfire throughout the Byzantine world. He was considered one of the most wise and compassionate clergymen in the entire history of the Church. His Feast Day is observed on January 1 st, the beginning of the New Year and the Epiphany Season. The Church, therefore, in respect for his many contributions to the Church and to mankind in general, combined the joy and happiness of the New Year with the glory of the birth of Christ and the Epiphany into what is known in the Orthodox Church as the Vasilopita Observance. According to tradition, sweet bread is prepared both in the Orthodox homes and in the Church community which is called Vasilopita. Sweets are added to the bread which symbolize the sweetness and joy of life everlasting and also symbolizes the hope that the New Year will be filled with the sweetness of life, liberty, health and happiness for all who participate in the Vasilopita Observance. When the Vasilopita is prepared, a coin is usually added to the ingredients. When the bread is cut and the observance begins, the individual who receives that portion of the pita which contains the coin is considered lucky. This tradition adds joy to the celebration at the beginning of the New Year, which everyone hopes will bring joy to all. Many Orthodox Christians enjoy the Vasilopita at home with their loved ones during the New Year celebration. The head of the family cuts the pieces of pita for all members of the family. Since St. Basil loved the poor people, a special piece is cut for the unfortunate of the world which symbolizes our concern for the poverty-stricken people of all nations. The community observance of the Vasilopita is most impressive. The priest begins the spiritual portion of the observance with a series of supplications for the health and peace of the world. Pieces are cut for Christ and His Holy Church, the Patriarch, Archbishop, Clergy and Laity, etc. (This tradition is taken from the ancient Christian observance of evening meals within the community.) Many pieces of bread are then distributed to the faithful, and the monies received from this gesture are sent to the children s home of St. Basil s Academy in Garrison, New York. All of the proceeds from the entire observance are sent for the needs of the Children s Home, like the one originally founded by St. Basil over 1500 years ago. The Vasilopita is a joyous observance and it is a custom which should not be neglected by Greek Orthodox Christians in the Western world. It should be retained annually in the home and in the parish. Sometimes the beautiful Kalanda or songs are sung during this observance which make reference to the love of Christ, His miraculous birth; His baptism and the compassion of the pious St. Basil who brought so much joy and happiness to the world. It is a wonderful way to begin each New Year which God had given to the world.

26 The Feast of the Light One of the most beautiful songs of the Theophany is its kontakion: Today You have appeared to the world, O Lord, and your light has shown upon us who, realizing who you are, sing to you a hymn of praise. Inaccessible Light, you have come and made yourself known! This very short hymn of praise catches the whole theology of this uniquely sacred feast the One Who is from all eternity the Inaccessible Light has come and made himself known to the world. On this holy day true worshipers throughout the world hold candles in their hands and with their voices they raise a song of praise to the only true God the Holy Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, -as He appeared at the moment of Christ s baptism. We hold torches as did our forbearers, brothers and sisters in Christ, a great many of whom became torches themselves, dying a martyrs death rather than deny Christ. We hold candles and our hearts are to be aflame with the light of Christ. Because this is not the feast of lights, it is the Feast of Light! Yes, this is the feast of the Inaccessible Light, who came into the world to help us regain our original beauty and give us eternal life. and this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom You have sent (John 17:3). The knowledge of God, which gives us eternal life, is not a philosophical concept, or a metaphor, it is the communion with the only true God made known in Christ. That was the true light which gives light to every man coming into the world. (John 1:9), points out St. John the Apostle. While Christ himself says, I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life (John 8:12). And again, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, writes St. Paul. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth (1Timothy 2:3-4). Yes, God desires all human beings to come to the knowledge of the truth. He does not discriminate against anyone; He offers salvation to all, He wants every human being to share in his goodness. For this goal he became a man, to show us the light. St. Ambrose of Milan says, Christ was on earth, that you may be in the stars. He had no place in the inn that you might have many mansions in heaven. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil (John 3:19). The first tragic choice of humankind was when it chose to attain to deification on its own, apart from God. After Christ, the Light of the world came, we have to face up to the second tragic choice of humankind, since it loved darkness rather than light, seeking to hide itself from God in a false refuge, the refuge of darkness, the refuge of estrangement from God. And not only that but our humanity, particularly our contemporary humanity, did choose to deceive itself by claiming that the darkness is light. St. Paul advises us not to wonder about this, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light (1Corinthians 11:14). Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the Light (Ephesians 5:6, 8). Those who were sanctified with the new nature from Christ have to walk daily the marathon of separating themselves from darkness. Moreover, they have to expose the darkness also. St. John Chrysostom underlined: He had said, you are light. Now the light reproves by exposing the things which take place in the darkness. So that if you are virtuous, and conspicuous, the wicked will be unable to lie hidden. For just as when a candle is set, all are brought to light, and the thief cannot enter, so if your light shines, the wicked being discovered will be caught. When our Christly light shines the deceiving angel of light will be seen as wicked as he is, as an angel of darkness. Says Vladimir Lossky, The Church, according to St. Cyril of Alexandria, is the holy city, which has not been sanctified by observing the law for the law made nothing perfect (Hebrews 7:19), but by being conformed to Christ; participating in the divine nature through the communication of the Holy Spirit, who stamped us with His seal in the day of our deliverance when we are washed from every stain. 27 The Feast of the Light The humanity of Christ provides the opportunity for the manifestation of the Trinity. That is why the Theophany and the Transfiguration are celebrated so solemnly; it is the revelation of the Trinity that is being celebrated; for the voice of the Father was heard and the Holy Spirit was present the first time in the form of a dove (Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church). This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased (Matthew 3:17). In Christ s baptism, we see the invisible icon of the Holy Trinity. The Father speaks; the Holy Spirit descends; the incarnate Son is baptized and anointed. In the katavasia for the feast, St. Germanus says, The true light has appeared and bestows enlightenment to all. Christ who is above all purity is baptized with us; He brings sanctification to the water and it becomes a cleansing for our souls. That which is outward and visible is earthly, that which is inwardly understood is higher than heaven. Salvation comes through washing, and through water the Spirit; by descending into water we ascend to God. Wonderful are your works, O Lord: Glory to You. Godless wisdom cannot talk about God! He is billions and billions of light-years far from being apprehended by godless, rational babble. But with Christ, who came to us, we realize that God is as close to us as a baptism, as a prayer. After being baptized, we became able to see God with the eye of our souls our nous. But we can really see God only through Christ, by allowing Him to come to us not as a mere light but as the Light. And the Light who enlightens the whole universe will enlighten within us the kingdom of God (Luke 17:21). Yet, most of the time we are reluctant to talk to Him! We are all the more reluctant despite the fact that the heavenly voice of the Father commanded, Hear Him! (Matthew 17:5). We fail to realize that our very becoming like Christ, yes, our own salvation, cannot be conceivably attained without an intimate union with Christ in His full humanity. Because His humanity was untouched by sin, and unlike Adam s humanity before the Fall, Christ s humanity could not be corrupted by sin. It is through our union with Christ s uncorrupted humanity that our human nature is healed. Only a humanity like Christ s will make us inheritors of God s Kingdom. So, come! Come, enjoy the Feast of the Light! Come, since today we have been delivered from darkness and illuminated with the light of the knowledge of God. Today the blinding mist of the world is dispersed by the Epiphany of our God. Today the whole creation shines with light from on high. Today error is laid low and the coming of the Master has made for us a way of salvation. Today things above keep feast with things below, and things below commune with things above. Today the triumphant assembly of the Orthodox keeps this holy festival with great joy. (From The Great Blessing of the Waters). Come, be enlightened by the Inaccessible Light! Rev. Dr. Dumitru Macailia
