3 The Burning Bush ~ Exodus 3:10-15 Moses as a Steward to God s Project 1 Now Moses was tending the sheep 2 he saw the bush burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight 4 And God called him Moses, Moses. Here am I, said he 5 Take your sandals off your feet, for the place you stand is holy ground 6 I am the God of your father and Moses was afraid 7 And the Lord said, I have seen the affliction of my people 10 Come now, I will send you to Pharaoh, to bring my people the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. Here we see the following: God calls individuals to do His work. He can do it all by Himself, He is the almighty. But he wants His people to be involved in His plan of saving others. God called Abraham, the Lord now calls Moses to lead a mission; a rescue mission of special importance. Our involvement in the ministries of the church are mighty tasks of great importance. They are not selfish acts but for the benefit of the children of the new Israel. There should not be an ounce of selfishness or pride in such a godly work. V11 But Moses said to God, Who am I to go to Pharaoh, King of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel our of the land of Egypt? Here we witness human frailty; weakness and doubts before what seems an enormous task according to our logic. This is a major reason that stops people from taking on ministry work in churches. Who am I fear; What talents do I have; low self esteem that follows thoughts of failure. Or is it negative humility in order not to take the challenge? Perhaps it s modesty. But modesty partakes of faithlessness and frustration knowing that now I have to face the people who may criticize me, even if I succeed. Moses here, as many others also do, discounts something very important which is revealed in the next verse #12. You see, God must transform Moses modesty into the humility of faith. V12 Then God said to Moses, I will be with you, and this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you; When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain. In order to bring light into this verse 12, vs 7-10 should be read. In that light we may say, Moses is not divinely assured of helpful assistance on a project essentially his. He is told again that this is God s project. God is at the center of it and Moses is only a unit in His work. Therefore, any ministry in the Church is not our project. It is a project of God almighty. If we work at it as being our project, even if it seems successful, it is in reality a failure; soon all will collapse because the center of attention and the project itself, (no matter if the ministry involves clergy or laity) is on self and our name is written all over the pages. V12 assures us that God is next to us, our helper and deliverer, our protector and power, as we say in the Divine Liturgy. And if God is with us, who can be against us? With such knowledge and a humble faith, we can accomplish anything. The Lord Jesus assures us, if you have faith as little as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, Move and it will move. In this verse we also see that God pledges to Moses, not as proof but as a promise. The promise can be relevant to Moses only if he believes God is the deliverer. We plant, He causes the increase. A ministry leader ought to have this mindset also. The increase is not ours, it belongs to God. My task is to do in faith what God has called me to do. Many times, we heard Jesus say to His disciples, have no fear, it is I. God is the deliverer and the content of the promise seeks to elicit this faith. God is a realist and great psychologist. When you have brought out the people from Egypt you shall serve God upon this mountain. This stresses the theocentric character of mission. God is not merely going to fulfill Moses defeated hopes or erase the burden of slaves; He is going to establish an inheritance for Himself; the Church, His Church. The covenant will be sealed at the very mountain. This deliverance is God s work. In Matthew 25, the Lord Jesus explains it this way, Come you blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom (mountain) prepared for you from the foundation of the world, for I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was a stranger and you took me in, I was in prison and you came to me. If we do God s work in faith and humility our reward promise is the Kingdom of Heaven. A very good reason to work diligently in the Church for the people of God, helping them to escape the vanity of the world (Egypt). Every Ministry ought to have this goal. To collect the people of God, take them out of the world and bring them to the mountain to worship the One True God. V13 So Moses said to God, Indeed, when I go to the children of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers sent me to you, and they ask me, What is His name?, What shall I tell them? Continued next page...

4 Continued Here Moses responds in faith and proceeds to a practical question (great lesson). How shall he convince the Israelites that God has really spoken to him? In the Bible, (and daily life) a name, whether of man, angel or deity, sets forth the character of its bearer. If the plan Moses presents to the elders is to impress them as God s revelation and not Moses own idea, he must be able to give the name of God, a new name that goes with the new revelation. Why is this a great lesson for us? As ministry leaders or members of a specific ministry in the church in order to convince others to become active participants to the life of the parish we must not give our name as the reason of them following us to the mountain, but of God s. We must become messengers of God s revelation. This is not about me my friend, it is about you and your God. Of course, in order to convince a person to come forth and follow you, it is not enough to mention God s name. The ministry leaders name must reveal a good character, a man or woman of the faith. V14 Then God said to Moses, I AM the Existing One. He also said, thus you shall say to the children of Israel, The ONE WHO IS sent me to you. Although His name is too sacred to be pronounced we begin to see from the narrative what kind of a God this was who revealed himself to Moses. He was a mysterious power, in whose presence one must put off the shoes from one s feet and cover one s face; He has a dwelling place in nature, in mountain, and bush and fire; He knew all that was happening among men; He hated injustice, helped the oppressed to freedom, and punished the tyrant; He could endow men with seemingly miraculous powers; He needed the help and cooperation of men to carry out His ends; He knew the heart of man, so as to choose the right man as His minister; He was the God of the fathers, even when known by them under a different name; He was omnipotent in directing the course of history through man and nature toward His own ends. What is our conception of our Triune God? The success of a ministry in the Church depends very much on that particular conception that the leader and its members have of God. If we see things as Moses did, when we arrive to the same conception of God as Moses did, then we will march forward with a conviction that will end in success. When we express with words and deeds this positive conception of the Lord to others, they will be convinced, converted, and will follow you to the mountain. Who in his right mind would not want to follow and be with such a merciful and compassionate God who cares for the welfare of all His sons and daughters? Vs14-15 Then God said to Moses, I AM the Existing One. He also said, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel. The Existing One HE WHO IS sent me to you. Moreover, God said to Moses again, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers (here we have a new revelation: to Abraham He appeared with the name God the Father; to Moses now He appears as Lord God the Son of the Living God) the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob sent me to you. This is my eternal name (Triune God) by which all generations will remember me. I AM that I AM or I AM the Existing One or I am He who Is. No matter which way the Greek is translated the importance here falls in the I AM!! God gave Moses a very short definition, His definition of His name. Indeed He only IS; all others have been and shall be. But there is a very practical application of the meaning of this mysterious name (inscribed on the halo of Christ s icon). If the name of God I worship is I Am, it seems to follow that only through what I am can I worship him aright. We all say, I am, or my name is, I am; If God s name I AM provides presence and unity among the three persons of the Holy Trinity (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob ) then my I am also should provide unity not separation from one another. God s I AM is of omnipotence, my I am is out of grace. Therefore, I should not Lord over anyone, nor act as god among men. Leadership therefore, in the Church is diakonia stewardship, it is God s work and project. Everything on earth and all who live upon the earth, belongs to God. The only thing that is mine is my free will as to follow and do God s will as Christ completed His Father s will on the cross. Every member of Christ s body ought to discover his/her I am in the church. In Communion with Christ and fellowship with other faithful. One Christian by himself is not a Christian. We receive the name Christian, which is the greatest I am, from the mouth of another person. Therefore again, it is my life, not my name, per se, that gives worth to the I am. The Lord God hears many voices, many hymns are sung and sent upwards, thousands of petitions travel to heaven, many cries of help and give me, give me Lord! But God closes the window and the noise stops. He opens the door and He hears our lives. What should we say to the Lord? O Lord, if it does not cost us too much, we sometimes would like to be just and courageous and kind. Help us do your work. Amen. Now Moses, you shall take in your hand the rod that was turned into a serpent with which you shall work miracles. Exodus 4:17 Then Moses took his wife and sons and he returned to the land of Egypt and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. Exodus 4:20 All is possible to those who believe.

14 A History of the Wilmington Greek Community Before the community purchased the T. Coleman dupont Estate on Broom Street and commenced services in the stables/ garage, services were held in rented facilities like the Law Building at 9 th and Market (site of the current Walgreen s) and the Eden Hall/Odd Fellows Hall on W. 10 th Street. The Law Building photo dates approximately You ll note the Kent Hotel (Charles Tarabicos was the owner) to the far left. The post card of Eden Hall dates between 1920 (when it was built) and 1938 (when the Warner Theatre was built to the right, where the row houses are shown). These are the years that the community would have rented it for services and/or events. There is a community photo taken, I believe, on the fourth floor. In that photo you can see the arching window in the background. Eden Hall is still there, but the parapets are gone. If you have stories/photos of events at those facilities, please reach out to me. Likewise, anyone interested in sharing old photographs and memories, please contact me at or via at klezaras@gmail.com. We need old photos of your family s restaurants/businesses as well. If you are a college student looking for Independent Study credit, please reach out to me as we can help each other. Please visit our Facebook page (Growing Up Greek in Wilmington) where people have been sharing their stories and photos for years. It is a private group, so please ask to be added via Facebook or send me your so I can invite you to join the group.

23 42 MARTYRS OF AMORION IN PHRYGIA / March 6 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone Ye who contended on earth for Christ's glory, and were shown forth as a godly crown-bearing Martyrs, have been vouchsafed to dwell in Heaven joyously; for since ye brake all the snares of the enemy's cunning by your suff'rings and the blood of your tortures and woundings, ye ever send down freely from on high loosing of sins unto all them that honour you. Reading: These Martyrs, men of high rank in the Roman (Byzantine) army, were taken captive when the city of Amorion in Phrygia fell to the Moslem Arabs in 838, during the reign of Theophilus the Iconoclast. Among them were Aetius and Melissenus, the generals; Theodore, the chief of the imperial ceremonial bodyguard; Craterus, the eunuch; Callistus, Constantine, Bassoes, and Theophilius, who were military officials; and certain others who held important positions. Because of their experience in war and their virtue, the Moslems did not slay them, but tried by all means to convert them to Islam and have them to fight in their own campaigns. They kept the holy Martyrs shut up in a dark dungeon in the city of Samarra in Syria, threatening and abusing them, making promises of glorious rank and magnificent riches, keeping them in hunger, oppression, and darkness, not for a few weeks, or a few months, but for seven full years. Finally, unable to break the courage and faith of their captives, they beheaded them in the year 845. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful. Reading: Saint Chrysanthus, who was from Alexandria, had been instructed in the Faith of Christ by a certain bishop. His father, who was a senator by rank and a pagan, had him shut up in prison for many days; then, seeing the unchanging disposition of his mind, he commanded that a certain young woman name Daria be brought from Athens. She was a very beautiful and learned maiden, and also an idolater, and Chrysanthus' father wedded him to her so that he might be drawn away from the Faith of Christ because of his love for her. Instead of this however, Chrysanthus drew Daria unto piety, and both of them boldly proclaimed Christ and received the crown of martyrdom in 283, during the reign of Numerian, when they were buried alive in a pit of mire. 24 The 25th of March, Greek Independence Day Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas The struggle of the enslaved Greeks against their ruthless rulers, the Ottoman Turks, officially started on the 25th of March 1821 in the monastery of Hagia Lavra, Kalavryta. Germanos, the bishop of Paleon Patron, raised the banner of the revolution and blessed the arms of the captains of the revolting Greeks. The beginning of the revolution coincided with one of the holiest days for Orthodox Christians, the Annunciation of the Theotokos. Unofficially though, the revolution of the Hellenes against the Ottoman Turks started one day after the fall of Constantinople on the 29th of May 1453, and continues until today. However, about 20 actual unsuccessful uprisings took place before the 1821 revolution that managed to liberate about 25% of the Hellenes residing in the Ottoman empire. The culturally superior Hellenic world, as represented by the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantine Empire, in 1453, fell to the nomadic Asian Turk, and further failed to civilize and assimilate this new conqueror as it had previously done with the Romans. The Moslem Turk adopted the material part of the Byzantines but not its Hellenic intellectual and cultural heritage. Under penalty of death, no Turk could be Christianized but many Christians, for their survival, converted to Islam. Thus, the probability that many of today s Turks are descended from the Greeks is high. During the 400 years of Ottoman occupation complete lack of schooling resulted in illiterate, superstitious and ignorant Hellenes (especially in their culture, history and language). Interestingly, the same Turkish policy continues today with the Kurds! systematic abduction of Christian children forming the infamous and cruel Jenisaries, faithful only to Sultan moderate religious freedom was granted to those minorities who accepted the Sultan as their despotic leader and paid their taxes churches were turned into mosques and icons were destroyed (usually by poking out the eyes of the depicted saints, as it is happening in the conquered north part of Cyprus today, at the end of the 20th century). However, the Hellenes living in the occupied Hellas reacted to the oppression, lack of education and freedom by continuous uprisings against their Ottoman overlords (kleftes and armatoloi were a continuous headache for the Turks) obtaining elementary education in the Hidden Schools (for reading and writing only), formed and covertly operated by the church (at the same time the Europeans, through the discovery of Hellenic classics, began the renaissance, after many centuries of darkness) always being reminded of their glorious past and the contribution of their ancestors to the world by the surrounding ruins of ancient temples, theaters and stadia; thus keeping their historical identity alive becoming successful international ship owners and merchants (Turks were not very successful as sea merchants, thus bringing the European ideas of democracy and freedom back to the enslaved Hellenes and at the same time informing the Europeans of their struggle (AGON) for independence and human dignity- -the contributions of the fleet of Spetses, Hydra and Chios were of extreme importance to the success of the revolution. The struggle of the Hellenes for independence was coordinated from abroad. The Hellenes of Diaspora were the strategic and financial brains behind the revolution (Secret Society of Friends [Filiki Etaeria], Sacred Band [Ieros Lohos], Ypsilandis, Koraes, Kapodistrias and many others raised the interest of the European and American intellectuals and Phil-Hellenes (Lord Byron, Dr. Samuel Gridly Howe, and Daniel Webster to name a few) The Holy Alliance, comprised of Austria, Russia, England, France, and Germany, tried to put an end to the revolution. The revolting Hellenes had been characterized, mainly by the Austrians, as agitators or terrorists using today s language. However, their fight for independence inspired many Europeans Phil-Hellenes, who gave their life for their righteous struggle. It is worth mentioning that there were Phil-Hellenes from every European nation except Austria and Czarist Russia (however, the Ieros Lohos (Sacred Band) was formed in Russia). The struggle of the Hellenes for Independence eventually resulted in the demise of the Ottoman Empire and the liberation of the enslaved Balkans (Haemus Peninsula) from the Ottoman yoke--it is also worth mentioning that the only people in the Balkans who fought against the Ottoman Turks were the Hellenes, something never forgotten by the contemporary Turks, and the creation of the contemporary Hellas State, an oasis of peace, democracy and stability, not only in the Balkans but in the Eastern Mediterranean as well. Even today, Turkey considers Hellas as A land under temporary Greek occupation! LONG LIVE THE 25TH OF MARCH 1821!!!

As Orthodox Christians we are to look after and care for the less fortunate, as it is a very Christian way to thank the Lord for the many blessings he has bestowed upon our families. Remember when you go food shopping, think about sharing with the poor. Our Food Pantry Project can only succeed if you, the parishioners, continue to donate and fill our food bins. Always needed are non-perishable items such as: Soups, fish, vegetables, meat, fruit, (any canned item), cereals, sugar, rice, pasta, cranberry sauce, baby food, coffee, tea, gravies, etc. Any food item that will not spoil. Thank you for your continued generous support! Happy are those who are concerned for the poor; the Lord will help them when they are in trouble. The Lord will protect them and preserve their lives. Psalms 41:1-2 February 12th at the Emmanuel Dining Room East Working in the kitchen once again in February, Dimitra Pappoulis, along with a few others, served 160 men, women and children a nice warm luncheon meal on Monday February 12th. The meal that day was donated by several anonymous donors. We thank them all for giving of their time and charity to this great organization! We look forward to serving again on Monday, March 12th with a new host and sponsor for this month. All are welcome to help serve on the 12th of every month! We sincerely thank all the individuals and organizations who generously give of their time and charity to this dining room and ministry! Various groups and individuals from our church donate the food and host the luncheon meal at the 3rd and Walnut St location. New sponsors are needed to fill a few months, so if you would like to become a part of this worthy service project with your family, friends or church organization, please contact Nikkie Tsakataras at or Tina Ganiaris at for more information.

32 Annunciation of the Theotokos / March 25 Reading: Six months after John the Forerunner's conception, the Archangel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth, a town of Galilee, unto Mary the Virgin, who had come forth from the Temple a mature maiden (see Nov. 21). According to the tradition handed down by the Fathers, she had been betrothed to Joseph four months. On coming to Joseph's house, the Archangel declared: "Rejoice, thou Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." After some consideration, and turmoil of soul, and fear because of this greeting, the Virgin, when she had finally obtained full assurance concerning God's unsearchable condescension and the ineffable dispensation that was to take place through her, and believing that all things are possible to the Most High, answered in humility: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And at this, the Holy Spirit came upon her, and the power of the Most high overshadowed her all-blameless womb, and the Son and Word of God, Who existed before the ages, was conceived past speech and understanding, and became flesh in her immaculate body (Luke 1:26-38). Bearing in her womb the Uncontainable One, the blessed Virgin went with haste from Nazareth to the hill country of Judea, where Zacharias had his dwelling; for she desired to find Elizabeth her kinswoman and rejoice together with her, because, as she had learned from the Archangel, Elizabeth had conceived in her old age. Furthermore, she wished to tell her of the great things that the Mighty One had been well-pleased to bring to pass in her, and she greeted Elizabeth and drew nigh to her. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, she felt her six-month-old babe, Saint John the Baptist, prophesied of the dawning of the spiritual Sun. Immediately, the aged Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and recognized her as the Mother of her Lord, and with a great voice blessed her and the Fruit that she held within herself. The Virgin also, moved by a supernatural rejoicing in the spirit, glorified her God and Savior, saying: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour," and the rest, as the divine Luke hath recorded (1:39-55) Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Today marks the crowning of our salvation and the revelation of the mystery before all ages. For the Son of God becomes the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel proclaims the grace. Wherefore, we also cry out with him, "Hail, O full of grace, the Lord is with you." Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone To you, Theotokos, invincible Defender, having been delivered from peril, I, your city, dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Hail, unwedded bride!" Sunday of the Holy Cross Tone of the week: Grave Tone / Seventh Eothinon Reading: With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labour set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast. Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Grave Tone By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. * To the robber You opened Paradise. * The lamentation of the myrrhbearing women You transformed, * and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all * that You had risen, O Christ our God, * and granted the world Your great mercy. Resurrectional Kontakion in the Grave Tone No longer will death's dominion have power to detain mortal men. For Christ went down and smashed and destroyed its powers. Now Hades is bound, and the Prophets in unison exult and declare: The Savior has appeared to those with faith. Come out, you faithful, to the Resurrection. Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone To you, Theotokos, invincible Defender, having been delivered from peril, I, your city, dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Hail, unwedded bride!"
