2 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE: The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16 Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ: Κυριακή Β Επιστολών, Αποστ. ανάγνωσμα: Ρωμ. β Αδελφοί, δόξα, τιμή και ειρήνη προσμένουν όποιον κάνει το καλό, πρώτα τον Ιουδαίο αλλά και τον εθνικό γιατί ο Θεός δεν κάνει διακρίσεις. Έτσι, λοιπόν, όσοι αμάρτησαν χωρίς να ξέρουν το νόμο του Θεού θα καταδικαστούν όχι με κριτήριο το νόμο. Κι από την άλλη, όσοι αμάρτησαν γνωρίζοντας το νόμο θα δικαστούν με κριτήριο το νόμο. Γιατί στο θεϊκό δικαστήριο δε δικαιώνονται όσοι άκουσαν απλώς το νόμο αλλά μόνο όσοι τήρησαν το νόμο. Όσο για τα άλλα έθνη, που δε γνωρίζουν το νόμο, πολλές φορές κάνουν από μόνοι τους αυτό που απαιτεί ο νόμος. Αυτό δείχνει πως, αν και δεν τους δόθηκε ο νόμος, μέσα τους υπάρχει ο νόμος. Η διαγωγή τους φανερώνει πως οι εντολές του νόμου είναι γραμμένες στις καρδιές τους και σ αυτό συμφωνεί και η συνείδηση τους, που η φωνή της τους τύπτει ή τους επαινεί, ανάλογα με τη διαγωγή τους. Όλα αυτά θα γίνουν την ημέρα που ο Θεός θα κρίνει δια του Ιησού Χριστού τις κρυφές σκέψεις των ανθρώπων, όπως λέει το ευαγγελιό μου. THE GOSPEL: 2nd Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According to Matthew 4:18-23 At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. ΤΟ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ: Κυριακή Β Ματθαίου, Ευαγγ. ανάγνωσμα: Ματθ. δ Καθώς ο Ιησούς περιπατούσε στην όχθη της λίμνης της Γαλιλαίας, είδε δύο αδέλφια, τον Σίμωνα, που τον έλεγαν και Πέτρο, και τον αδελφό του τον Ανδρέα, να ρίχνουν τα δίχτυα στη λίμνη, γιατί ήταν ψαράδες. «Ακολουθήστε με», τους λέει «και θα σας κάνω ψαράδες ανθρώπων». Κι αυτοί αμέσως άφησαν τα δίχτυα και τον ακολούθησαν. Προχωρώντας πιο πέρα από κεί, είδε δύο άλλους αδελφούς, τον Ιάκωβο, γιο του Ζεβεδαίου, και τον αδελφό του τον Ιωάννη. Βρίσκονταν στο ψαροκάϊκο μαζί με τον πατέρα τους τον Ζεβεδαίο και τακτοποιούσαν τα δίχτυά τους. Τους κάλεσε κι αυτοί άφησαν αμέσως το καΐκι και τον πατέρα τους και τον ακολούθησαν. Ο Ιησούς περιόδευε όλη την Γαλιλαία. Δίδασκε στις συναγωγές τους, κήρυττε το χαρμόσυνο μήνυμα για τον ερχομό της βασιλείας του Θεού και γιάτρευε τους ανθρώπους από κάθε ασθένεια και κάθε αδυναμία. 2

That means that it costs about $1320 a day to keep the doors of our church open. Following other successful parishes, we have decided to challenge our parishioners to sponsor a day at St. George s. With about 300 families, that means we could come close to sponsoring the whole year if every family would take a single day. 6 «ήσαν γαρ αλιείς» Μπορεί κανείς να διαπιστώσει ότι η συγκεκριμένη επιλογή του Κυρίου μας, δηλαδή να έχει ως μαθητές του ανθρώπους από τις κατώτερες βαθμίδες του κοινωνικού υπόβαθρου αποτελεί ιδιαίτερη τιμή για τον απλό λαό. Πρόκειται λοιπόν για μαθητές, οι οποίοι ήταν φτωχοί και πάλευαν μέσα στην θάλασσα της Τιβεριάδος για μια καλή ψαριά και να συντηρούν έτσι τόσο την οικογένεια τους, αλλά παράλληλα και να διατελούν, όσο μπορούσαν φιλανθρωπικό έργο. Ο τρόπος ζωής, σκέψεως και δράσης τους είχε ακριβώς αντίθετη φιλοσοφία με αυτή των Γραμματέων και Φαρισαίων. Υποχρεωμένοι να εργάζονται την συγκεκριμένη εποχή ήταν μόνο οι δούλοι και οι φτωχοί. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως ο Κύριος μας ευλόγησε την εργασία καθορίζοντας την ως καθήκον όλων. Μελετώντας κανείς την Αγία Γραφή ότι γίνονται συχνές αναφορές του Θεού για την εργασία. Ας μην ξεχνούμε πως η πρώτη εντολή που δόθηκε στον Αδάμ μέσα στον παράδεισο ήταν να εργάζεται. «Έλαβε Κύριος ο Θεός τον άνθρωπον, ον έπλασε, και έθετο αυτόν εν τώ παραδείσω εργάζεσθαι αυτόν και φυλάσσειν» (Γεν. β 15). Ο ιερός Χρυσόστομος παρατηρεί ότι εάν ο Αδάμ ήταν απαλλαγμένος από κάθε εργασία και έμενε άνεργος τότε θα οδηγείτο με ακρίβεια προς την ραθυμία και θα συνήθιζε στις ανέσεις και στην οκνηρά και απράγμονα ζωή. Ο απόστολος Παύλος, όταν πληροφορήθηκε πως ορισμένοι Χριστιανοί εκ Θεσσαλονίκης επιδίωκαν να μην εργάζονται και να συντηρούνται εις βάρος των άλλων, με την φώτιση πάντα του Αγίου Πνεύματος απευθύνθηκε σε αυτούς με αρκετό αυστηρό ύφος και ξεκάθαρες προτροπές. «Ει τις ου θέλει εργάζεσθαι, μηδέ εσθιέτω. Ακούομεν γάρ τινας.μηδέν εργαζομένους..τοις τοιούτοις παραγγέλομεν και παρακαλούμεν διά του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού, ίνα μετά ησυχίας εργαζόμενοι τον εαυτόν άρτον εσθιώσι» (Β Θεσσάλ.γ 10-12). Τονίζει επιπρόσθετα ότι δεν πρέπει να ζει κανείς εις βάρος των άλλων αλλά «κοπιάτω εργαζόμενος το αγαθόν ταίς χερσίν, ίνα έχη μεταδιδόναι τώ χρείαν έχοντι»(εφ. δ 28). Ο ίδιος ο απόστολος Παύλος εργαζόταν ως σκηνοποιός ημέρα και νύχτα για συντηρεί τόσο τις δικές του ανάγκες, όσο και αυτές των βοηθών του. Όλοι οι άνθρωποι του Θεού ασχολούνταν με χειρωνακτικές εργασίες, όπως ο Μωυσής φρόντιζε τα πρόβατα του πεθερού του Ιοθόρ, ο Δαυίδ ήταν βοσκός, ο προφήτης Αμώς γιδοβοσκός. Μέσα σε όλη αυτή την αναφορά μας για το θέμα της εργασίας ένα είναι το γενικό συμπέρασμα που αναβλύζει. Ο Θεός μας αποτρέπει από την οκνηρία και την ζωή της ευμάρειας δηλαδή την καθιστική ζωή και μας προτρέπει να εργαζόμαστε. Χρειάζεται ο κάθε χριστιανός να ασκεί και ένα βιοποριστικό επάγγελμα. Όση ταπεινότητα διακρίνει μιαν εργασία είτε αυτή είναι οικοδόμος, σκουπιδοσυλλέκτης, βοσκός, γεωργός, δεν πρέπει να ντρέπεται αυτός που την ασκεί, φτάνει να είναι έντιμος. Η σκόπιμη αποχή από την εργασία έχει και τις δυσμενείς επιπτώσεις της στο ίδιο το άτομο που επιλέγει αυτό τον τρόπο ζωής αλλά και γενικά στο όλο κοινωνικό σύνολο. Μέσα από αυτή του την επιλογή είναι αρκετά εύκολο να οδηγηθεί σε απάτες, κλοπές, και αν ακούγεται κάπως ακραίο καμιά φορά και στο έγκλημα για να εξασφαλίσει αυτά που χρειάζεται. Οι πλούσιοι δε χρειάζεται και αυτοί να εργάζονται. Μια εργασία επιβάλλεται γι αυτούς και δεν είναι άλλη παρά μόνο να μοχθούν για κοινωφελή, φιλανθρωπικά έργα. Η εργασία είναι λειτούργημα ευλογημένο από τον Θεό. Εξυψώνει τον άνθρωπο σωματικά και πνευματικά. Ο Μ. Βασίλειος γράφει για την εργασία ότι είναι καθήκον του καθενός μας. Καλλιεργούνται αρκετές αρετές μέσα από την εργασία, όπως η υπομονή, επιμονή, η υπακοή στον ανώτερο μας, η αγάπη, η προσπάθεια να βοηθήσουμε τον πλησίον μας. Λέει ο Κύριος για την οκνηρία και πονηρία: «πονηρέ δούλε και οκνηρέ..». Μεγάλη λοιπόν προσοχή μήπως και την ημέρα της κρίσεως σχηματίσει και για μας τέτοια εντύπωση ο Θεός μας. Οι μαθητές λοιπόν του Κυρίου, που κλήθηκαν στο αποστολικό αξίωμα, ήταν άνθρωποι απλοί και ταπεινοί. Ήταν φτωχοί ψαράδες, τους οποίους ο Θεός κατέστησε πανσόφους και αλιείς ανθρώπων. Εργάζονταν για τον άρτον τον επιούσιο, όταν τους κάλεσε ο Χριστός να μαθητεύσουν κοντά του. Άξιος συγχαρητηρίων και επαίνων λοιπόν μπροστά στο Θεό είναι οι άνθρωποι που ευσυνείδητα και τίμια εργάζονται. Με καθαρή τη συνείδηση μπορεί να επαναλαμβάνει το του αποστόλου Παύλου «ουδέ δωρεάν άρτον εφάγομεν παρά τινος, αλλ εν κόπω και μόχθω ωύχτα και ημέραν εργαζόμενοι προς το μη επιβαρήσαι τιν υμών» (Β Θεσ γ 8). 6

10 CONTINUE YOUR OFFERINGS THROUGH THE SUMMER Message from Parish Council Treasurer Toula Mancini We wait all year for summer. Then we fill them with vacations at the beach, camping trips in the woods and flying to Greece or far-off places. It s no wonder that church attendance dips in the summer. But while you are relaxing, your church continues to be busy with regular worship, social activities, caring for sick and the homebound members, planning weddings, baptisms and funerals, and ministering to the hungry and homeless in your community. And your clergy and church staff still need to be paid, as does the electric company. So, here s the problem: The bills continue to roll in even when you re away, and many stewards have not planned to keep their offerings current when they are on vacation. That s why so many churches face a cash crunch in the summer months. But here are some ideas for how to help Your church Saint George maintain its finances in the summer months. Pay it forward Your church would love to receive your summer offerings or part of them in advance. If you know you re going to be away, plan ahead by offering more in the weeks in advance of your time away from church. Make it up Alternatively, when you get back from your time away, give a little more in the weeks that follow in order to make up for the lost weeks. Use your envelopes Are you a check-writing person? Then simply fill in advance your offering envelopes with your weekly gift. If you have a check in every envelope, then on any given Sunday you need only to bring that day s envelope and whatever earlier Sunday envelopes are there. Also, envelopes can be mailed directly to Saint George Greek Orthodox Church 9426 Little Road New Port Richey, FL Use banking bill pay Lots of people find online banking services a convenient way to pay their monthly car loan, mortgage, light bill and other routine expenses. 16 Η ΘΕΙΑ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ Η Θεία Κοινωνία προσφέρεται στην Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία μόνο στα άτομα που βαφτίστηκαν στην Ορθόδοξη Πίστη. Για να συμμετάσχεις στην Θεία Κοινωνία, πρέπει να είσαι σε καλή κατάσταση με την Εκκλησία πνευματικά (για παράδειγμα, οι παντρεμένοι άνθρωποι πρέπει να έχει ευλογηθεί ο γάμος τους στην Εκκλησία και όλοι πρέπει να είναι χωρίς σοβαρή αμαρτία στις καρδιές τους). GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. If you have any further questions about this, please speak with the clergy. Women should remove all lipstick when approaching for Holy Communion.
