2 ΤΗΕ EPISTLE: The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 12:6-1 Brethren, having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Ανάγνωσμα: Ρωμ. ιβ 6-14 Αδελφοί, η χάρη του Θεού μας έδωσε διάφορα πνευματικά χαρίσματα : Άλλος είναι προφήτης, για να κηρύττει ανάλογα με το βαθμό της πίστεως του άλλος έχει το χάρισμα της διακονίας, για να προσφέρει τις υπηρεσίες του. Το ίδιο να κάνει κι ο δάσκαλος του λαού του Θεού με τη διδασκαλία κι όποιος έχει το χάρισμα να στηρίζει τους αδελφούς, να τους στηρίζει. Αλλά κι όποιος μοιράζει τα αγαθά του με τους άλλους, να το κάνει με απλότητα ο προϊστάμενος να δείχνει ζήλο για το έργο του όποιος μοιράζει τις ελεημοσύνες να το κάνει με καλοσύνη. Η αγάπη σας να είναι ειλικρινής. Να αποστρέφεστε το κακό και να ακολουθείτε το καλό. Να δείχνετε με στοργή την αγάπη σας για τους άλλους πιστούς. Να συναγωνίζεστε ποιος θα δείξει περισσότερη εκτίμηση στον άλλο. Μην είστε οκνηροί σ ό,τι πρέπει να δείχνετε ζήλο, να έχετε πνευματικό ενθουσιασμό, να υπηρετείτε τον Κύριο. Η ελπίδα να σας δίνει χαρά. Να έχετε υπομονή στις δοκιμασίες. Να επιμένετε στην προσευχή. Να βοηθάτε τους άλλους χριστιανούς, όταν βρίσκονται σε ανάγκη, και να επιδιώκετε να φιλοξενείτε τους αδελφούς. Να προσεύχεστε για το καλό των διωκτών σας, να ζητάτε την ευλογία του Θεού γι αυτούς κι όχι να τους καταριέστε. THE GOSPEL: 6th Sunday of Matthew The Gospel According to Matthew 9:1-8 At that time, getting into a boat Jesus crossed over and came to his own city. And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Rise and walk?' But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins" he then said to the paralytic -- "Rise, take up your bed and go home." And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men. ΤΟ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟΝ: Κυριακή Στ Ματθαίου, Ευαγγ. Ανάγνωσμα: Ματθ. θ 1 8 Εκείνο τον καιρό, ο Ιησούς επιβιβάστηκε στο πλοίο, διέσχισε τη λίμνη και ήρθε στην πόλη του. Τότε του έφεραν έναν παράλυτο ξαπλωμένο σ ένα κρεβάτι. Όταν είδε ο Ιησούς την πίστη τους, είπε στον παράλυτο: «Θάρρος, παιδί μου, σου συγχωρήθηκαν οι αμαρτίες σου». Τότε μερικοί από τους γραμματείς είπαν μέσα τους: «Μα αυτός προσβάλλει το Θεό». Ο Ιησούς όμως, που κατάλαβε τις σκέψεις τους, είπε: «Γιατί κάνετε πονηρές σκέψεις; Τι είναι ευκολότερο να πω: σου συγχωρούνται οι αμαρτίες, ή να πω: σήκω και περπάτα; Για να μάθετε λοιπόν πως ο Υιός του Ανθρώπου έχει την εξουσία να συγχωρεί αμαρτίες πάνω στη γη» λέει στον παράλυτο: «Σήκω, πάρε το κρεβάτι σου και πήγαινε στο σπίτι σου». Εκείνος σηκώθηκε και πήγε στο σπίτι του. Όταν ο κόσμος το είδε αυτό έμειναν κατάπληκτοι και δοξολόγησαν το Θεό, που έδωσε τέτοια εξουσία στους ανθρώπους. 2

3 Message from Metropolitan Alexios My Beloved Ones, Today, I would like to move the focus of my weekly message from the Gospel, to this Sunday s Epistle. In this letter, St. Paul instructs the members of the young Roman church in just why it is so important to support their fellow members of the Body of Christ. He begins by demonstrating that, since each human being is made unique in God s Image and Likeness, then each also has a unique set of skills and abilities. [L]et us use them: if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness (Romans 12:6-8). We know from the Gospel that is not enough for a person to ask why God did not bless him or her with this talent, or with that skill; but instead we must sincerely make use of that which we have. In using these skills to the best of our ability, we are not only giving proper glory to God, but also honoring His Will. How do we make use of these skills? We are meant to, as St. Paul continues, Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. (Romans 12:9-10) Supposing that some are helpful cooks or builders, while others are skilled designers or passionate speakers; we are all meant to lift up and honor one another in what St. Paul refers to as brotherly affection. When one member of the Body of Christ succeeds, all succeed, and Christ s Church succeeds. We know all too well though, as our Lord tells us, that [H]e makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust (Matthew 5:45). The value of any human relationship, especially one within the Body of Christ, is that just as we lift up our sister s talents and abilities in a moment of triumph or joy, we are also a means of support during her time of struggle. It is for this reason that St. Paul reminds us that we are to Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. (Romans 12:12-14). Though pain and struggle are an unfortunate part of living within this fallen world, we are blessed to have received from Christ, St. Paul, and all the Saints a model for living as if heaven were on earth. In this way, we support our sister, not simply because it is the right thing to do, but rather, because it is the heavenly thing to do. By living in such a way, we will find it that much more possible to live as St. Paul exhorts us earlier in the Epistle, Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. (Romans 12:11) It is in these moments of tiredness, of sadness, or anger that we must look to our brothers and sisters for support, just as we supported them. On an individual level however, only we alone can reorient ourselves to keep our minds on that one person who is the sole focus of our goals in life. 4 Η σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή αναφέρεται στο θαύμα της θεραπείας του παραλυτικού στην πόλη της Καπερναούμ, στην οποία επέστρεψε ο Ιησούς μετά την θεραπεία των δύο δαιμονισμένων στην περιοχή των Γεργεσηνών, καθώς οι κάτοικοι της περιοχής τον παρακάλεσαν να απομακρυνθεί. Ο Ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος με μια λιτή και σύντομη περιγραφή αναφέρει ότι έφεραν έναν παραλυτικό ξαπλωμένο σε κρεβάτι, ωστόσο οι άλλοι Ευαγγελιστές που περιγράφουν το ίδιο θαύμα μας πληροφορούν για τον μεγάλο κόπο στον οποίο υποβλήθηκαν αυτοί που μετέφεραν τον παραλυτικό, καθώς για να μπορέσουν να προσεγγίσουν τον Ιησού λόγω του πλήθους των ανθρώπων, τον ανέβασαν στη στέγη, άνοιξαν μία οπή και τον κατέβασαν από εκεί μπροστά στον Κύριο. Ο Ιησούς, βλέποντας την μεγάλη τους πίστη, απευθύνεται στον παραλυτικό λέγοντας «Έχε θάρρος παιδί μου, σου συγχωρήθηκαν οι αμαρτίες σου», δείχνοντας με αυτό τον τρόπο την εξουσία που έχει να συγχωρεί αμαρτίες. Το γεγονός ότι ο Κύριος δεν θεράπευσε αμέσως το σώμα του παραλύτου, κάτι που θα ήταν ορατό και θα εντυπωσίαζε επιδεικτικά το πλήθος των ανθρώπων που βρίσκονταν εκεί, δείχνει κατ αρχήν την ταπείνωσή του. Επιπλέον, διακρίνοντας τα βαθύτερα αίτια της ασθένειας του παραλύτου, θεραπεύει πρώτα την ψυχή του και στη συνέχεια προχωρά στη θεραπεία του σώματος αφού λάβει αφορμή από τους ίδιους τους εχθρούς του, δηλαδή τους γραμματείς που ήταν παρόντες και σκέφτονταν ότι βλασφημεί. Ο άγιος Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος αναφέρει ότι οι εχθροί του ενοχλήθηκαν λόγω της πονηρίας τους και ήθελαν να τον καταγγείλουν, συνέβαλαν όμως άθελά τους να λάμψει το θαύμα. Ο Κύριος ως καρδιογνώστης αποκαλύπτει τις κρυφές σκέψεις των γραμματέων και τους ρωτά τι θα ήταν πιο εύκολο για τον ίδιο να πει, «σου συγχωρούνται οι αμαρτίες» ή «σήκω περπάτα»; Δηλαδή, όπως εξηγεί ο ιερός Χρυσόστομος, είναι σαν να τους ρωτά, τι θεωρείτε ευκολότερο, το να θεραπεύσω ένα σώμα παράλυτο ή να συγχωρήσω τα αμαρτήματα της ψυχής; Ευκολότερη ασφαλώς θεωρείται η θεραπεία του σώματος, διότι η ψυχή είναι ανώτερη και επομένως είναι προτιμότερο να συγχωρηθούν τα αμαρτήματα. Επειδή όμως το ένα φαίνεται και το άλλο δεν φαίνεται, και κατά την ανθρώπινη κρίση είναι πιο εύκολο να πει κάποιος ότι συγχωρούνται οι αμαρτίες, έπραξε στη συνέχεια το υποδεέστερο που είναι περισσότερο εμφανές, για να αποδειχθεί αυτό που είναι σπουδαιότερο και δεν φαίνεται. Ο Ιησούς απευθύνεται στον παραλυτικό λέγοντάς του να σηκωθεί, να πάρει το κρεβάτι του και να πάει στο σπίτι του, ως οφθαλμοφανής επισφράγιση της σωματικής του θεραπείας, η οποία αλληλένδετα επιβεβαιώνει την συγχώρηση των αμαρτιών του. Έτσι με τρόπο αξιοθαύμαστο και περίτεχνο ο Κύριος καταφέρνει να αξιοποιήσει την πονηρία των εχθρών του, για να φανερώσει ότι είναι τέλειος Θεός και τέλειος άνθρωπος. Η θεραπεία του παραλυτικού θα λέγαμε ότι αποτελείται από ένα θαύμα και ένα σημείο. Το θαύμα είναι η συγχώρεση των αμαρτιών και το σημείο, η σωματική γιατρειά. Ο Κύριος θεράπευσε πρώτα την αιτία, δηλαδή την αμαρτία, και μετά το σώμα. Επισημαίνεται με αυτό τον τρόπο η άρρηκτη σχέση που υπάρχει ανάμεσα στην αμαρτία και τη σωματική ασθένεια, μία σύνδεση που μάλλον φαίνεται αδιανόητη στον σύγχρονο άνθρωπο, ο οποίος σκέφτεται ορθολογιστικά. Ο σημερινός χριστιανός μπορεί να εξάγει σημαντικά διδάγματα από την σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή της θεραπείας του παραλυτικού. Κατ αρχήν η θεραπεία του παραλυτικού τονίζει τη δύναμη της πίστης στο πρόσωπο του Κυρίου Ιησού Χριστού, ο οποίος έχει εξουσία να συγχωρεί αμαρτίες και να θεραπεύει την ψυχή και το σώμα. Ο σημερινός χριστιανός μπορεί να συναντήσει τον Κύριο στην Εκκλησία, η οποία είναι διαχρονικά ο «Χριστός παρατεινόμενος εις τους αιώνες», και μετέχοντας στα ιερά μυστήρια να λάβει την ίαση της ψυχής και του σώματος. Ειδικότερα, η μετοχή στα μυστήρια της ιεράς εξομολογήσεως και της θείας Ευχαριστίας συνιστά τον ακρογωνιαίο λίθο της πνευματικής ζωής των χριστιανών. Επιπλέον, το παράδειγμα των ανθρώπων που μετέφεραν τον παραλυτικό ενώπιον του Κυρίου φανερώνει την κοινωνική προέκταση της αγάπης προς τον συνάνθρωπο, η οποία όταν είναι αληθινή γίνεται έμπρακτη και «εφευρετική» με σκοπό να οδηγήσει τον άλλον ενώπιον του Χριστού για να λάβει τη θεραπεία και τη σωτηρία. Τέλος, η εν λόγω ευαγγελική περικοπή αποτελεί έναυσμα και πρόκληση για να αναλογισθεί ο καθένας μας τον τρόπο με τον οποίο τοποθετεί τον εαυτό του απέναντι στον Χριστό και να εξετάσει μήπως αντιδρά με «πονηρία» στη διδασκαλία και τα θαύματα του Κυρίου, όπως οι γραμματείς. Η σημερινή ευαγγελική περικοπή τονίζει την αληθινή πίστη και την αγαθή προαίρεση απέναντι στο πρόσωπο του Κυρίου Ιησού Χριστού, και την έμπρακτη αγάπη προς τον συνάνθρωπο, βασικές αρχές και 4

5 οδοδείκτες που θα βοηθήσουν τον σύγχρονο χριστιανό να βρει διέξοδο στα αδιέξοδα της ζωής και να απεγκλωβιστεί από τον εγωιστικό σύγχρονο τρόπο ζωής. 12 CONTINUE YOUR OFFERINGS THROUGH THE SUMMER Message from Parish Council Treasurer Toula Mancini We wait all year for summer. Then we fill them with vacations at the beach, camping trips in the woods and flying to Greece or far-off places. It s no wonder that church attendance dips in the summer. But while you are relaxing, your church continues to be busy with regular worship, social activities, caring for sick and the homebound members, planning weddings, baptisms and funerals, and ministering to the hungry and homeless in your community. And your clergy and church staff still need to be paid, as does the electric company. So, here s the problem: The bills continue to roll in even when you re away, and many stewards have not planned to keep their offerings current when they are on vacation. That s why so many churches face a cash crunch in the summer months. But here are some ideas for how to help Your church Saint George maintain its finances in the summer months. Pay it forward Your church would love to receive your summer offerings or part of them in advance. If you know you re going to be away, plan ahead by offering more in the weeks in advance of your time away from church. Make it up Alternatively, when you get back from your time away, give a little more in the weeks that follow in order to make up for the lost weeks. Use your envelopes Are you a check-writing person? Then simply fill in advance your offering envelopes with your weekly gift. If you have a check in every envelope, then on any given Sunday you need only to bring that day s envelope and whatever earlier Sunday envelopes are there. Also, envelopes can be mailed directly to Saint George Greek Orthodox Church 9426 Little Road New Port Richey, FL Use banking bill pay Lots of people find online banking services a convenient way to pay their monthly car loan, mortgage, light bill and other routine expenses. Why not your church offering, too? Many online banking services will cut a check and send it to the church for you. 12

13 Enroll in electronic giving You can help by enrolling in electronic giving. Your offerings will go right to the church in the amount and according to the timeframe you specify. GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is offered in the Orthodox Church only to those individuals baptized and Chrismated (confirmed) in the Orthodox Faith. To participate in Holy Communion one must be in good standing with the Church spiritually (for example, married people must have had their marriage blessed in the Church and all must be without grave sin on their hearts). For all Orthodox Christians, the proper preparation for Holy Communion must be observed: examination of conscience, confession, reading the prayers for Holy Communion, and the proper fasting. If you have any further questions about this, please speak with the clergy. Women should remove all lipstick when approaching for Holy Communion. Please let parents with their babies and the elderly approach first.
