3 Father Christos Message DON'T FORGET JESUS It is difficult being a teenager in this society. Today's youth are exposed to more evil and dangerous ideas than any comparable age group in the history of the Western world. The latest youth report from "Focus on the Family" relates the following:" Dogging teenagers like hungry wolves are those who would exploit them for financial gain, including drug pushers, movie and television producers, sex abusers, abortion providers and rock junkies. They are also pursued by those who would use them to revolutionize the culture, including homosexual activists, New Age gurus, Planned Parenthood types and the more radical leaders of the National Education Association." That's the bad news. The Good News is that this month is Christmas, when the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin to save us and to deliver us from the above evils of this world. We do not have to believe the lies of those who have been tempted by the evil one. We do not have to fall victim to the deception of this anti-christian atmosphere. Christ has come to show us the way and the truth. Christmas is the time when we are thankful that the Child who was born of the Virgin Mary in the little and unpopular city of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago was not just a human Child but He is also God. This mystery may be difficult to understand, but it s the real truth of Christmas, and it s the reason why Christians rejoice and praise God during this blessed nativity season: Again, the eternal God has become one of us, so that we may be eternal! As you have already noticed our contemporary culture will try very hard to make us forget about the Incarnation of Christ and the truth of Christmas. DO NOT BE FOOLED! Don't fall in the net of forgetfulness this season. REMEMBER HIM! REMEMBER JESUS! Remember Him by helping others. Remember Him in prayer and fasting. Remember Him every Sunday. Remember His sacrifice for you by humbly approaching the Chalice of Salvation and being united with the Body and Blood of Christ Himself. As your parish priest I urge you, during this Nativity season do not look at the pleasures and distractions of the world but rather like the Magi focus at the star that leads to your Savior. Don't forget Jesus!

8 Barbara the Martyr / December 4 Reading: Saint Barbara was from Heliopolis of Phoenicia and lived during the reign of Maximian. She was the daughter of a certain idolater named Dioscorus. When Barbara came of age, she was enlightened in her pure heart and secretly believed in the Holy Trinity. About this time Dioscorus began building a bath-house; before it was finished he was required to go away to attend to certain matters, and in his absence Barbara directed the workmen to build a third window in addition to the two her Father had commanded. She also inscribed the sign of the Cross with her finger upon the marble of the bath-house, leaving the saving sign cut as deeply into the marble as if it had been done with an iron too. (When the Synaxarion of Saint Barbara was written, the marble of the bath-house and the cross inscribed by Saint Barbara were still preserved, and many healings were worked there.) When Dioscorus returned, he asked why the third window had been added; Barbara began to declare to him the mystery of the Trinity. Because she refused to renounce her faith, Dioscorus tortured Barbara inhumanely, and after subjecting her to many sufferings he beheaded her with his own hands, in the year 290. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Let us honor the holy Barbara for, with the aid of the Cross as her weapon, she crushed the snares of the enemy, and was rescued from them like a bird. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone O noble Champion, following God who is reverently praised in Trinity, you abandoned the temples of idols. Struggling amid suffering, O Barbara, you were not overwhelmed by the threats of the tyrants, O brave One, even singing aloud, "I worship the Trinity, the one Godhead." The Conception by St. Anna of the Most Holy Theotokos/December 9 Reading: According to the ancient tradition of the Church, since Saint Anna, the Ancestor of God, was barren, she and her husband Joachim remained without children until old age. Therefore, sorrowing over their childlessness, they besought God with a promise that, if He were to grant them the fruit of the womb, they would offer their offspring to Him as a gift. And God, hearkening to their supplication, informed them through an Angel concerning the birth of the Virgin. And thus, through God's promise, Anna conceived according to the laws of nature, and was deemed worthy to become the mother of the Mother of our Lord (see also Sept. 8). Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Against all hope, the bonds of barrenness are loosed today. For, God has hearkened unto Joachim and Anna clearly promising that they would bear a godly maiden. He who commanded the angel to cry out to her, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you," will be born of her, the infinite One Himself, becoming man. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone Today the world rejoices in the conception of Anna, wrought by God. For she bore the One who beyond comprehension conceived the Logos. Eleutherios the Holy Martyr, Bishop Illyria and his mother Anthia / December 15 Reading: This Saint had Rome as his homeland. Having been orphaned of his father from childhood, he was taken by his mother Anthia to Anicetus, the Bishop of Rome (some call him Anencletus, or Anacletus), by whom he was instructed in the sacred letters (that is, the divine Scriptures). Though still very young in years, he was made Bishop of Illyricum by reason of his surpassing virtue, and by his teachings he converted many unbelievers to Christ. However, during a most harsh persecution that was raised against the Christians under Hadrian (reigned ), the Saint was arrested by the tyrants. Enduring many torments for Christ, he was finally put to death by two soldiers about the year 126. As for his Christ-loving mother Anthia, while embracing the remains of her son and kissing them with maternal affection, she was also beheaded. Apolytikion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone Adorned with flowing priestly vesture and with dripping streams of blood you at once went to your Lord Christ, O blessed wise Eleftherios, annihilator of Satan. Wherefore, do not cease to intercede for those who honor your blessed struggles in faith. Kontakion in the Second Tone O venerable One, we all praise and entreat you, Eleftherios, Priest-Martyr, comeliness of Priests and exaltation of champions. Deliver from diverse dangers those fervently honoring your memory, interceding unceasingly for us all.

9 NICHOLAS THE WONDERWORKER, ARCHBISHOP OF MYRA/DECEMBER 6 Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock as a rule of faith, an icon of meekness, and a teacher of temperance; for this cause, thou hast achieved the heights by humility, riches by poverty. O Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Kontakion in the Third Tone Saintly One, (St. Nicholas) in Myra you proved yourself a priest; for in fulfilling the Gospel of Christ, venerable One, you laid down your life for your people and saved the innocent from death. For this you were sanctified as One learned in divine grace. Reading: This Saint lived during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, and reposed in 330, As a young man, he desired to espouse the solitary life. He made a pilgrimage to the holy city Jerusalem, where he found a place to withdraw to devote himself to prayer. It was made known to him, however, that this was not the will of God for him, but that he should return to his homeland to be a cause of salvation for many. He returned to Myra, and was ordained bishop. He became known for his abundant mercy, providing for the poor and needy, and delivering those who had been unjustly accused. No less was he known for his zeal for the truth. He was present at the First Ecumenical Council of the 318 Fathers at Nicaea in 325; upon hearing the blasphemies that Arius brazenly uttered against the Son of God, Saint Nicholas struck him on the face. Since the canons of the Church forbid the clergy to strike any man at all, his fellow bishops were in perplexity what disciplinary action was to be taken against this hierarch whom all revered. In the night our Lord Jesus Christ and our Lady Theotokos appeared to certain of the bishops, informing them that no action was to be taken against him, since he had acted not out of passion, but extreme love and piety. The Dismissal Hymn for holy hierarchs, The truth of things hath revealed thee to thy flock... was written originally for Saint Nicholas. He is the patron of all travelers, and of sea-farers in particular; he is one of the best known and best loved Saints of all time. 14,000 INFANTS (HOLY INNOCENTS) SLAIN BY HEROD IN BETHLEHEM December 29 Apolytikion in the First Tone Be entreated, O Lord, by the sufferings endured for You by the Saints, and we pray You, heal all our pain. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Second Tone When the King was born in Bethlehem, the Magi arrived from the East with gifts guided by a Star on high, but Herod was troubled and mowed down the children like wheat; for he lamented that his power would soon be destroyed. Reading: The infant-slaying Herod mentioned here is the same one that ruled at the time of Christ's Nativity. In those days, certain Magi, who were wise and noble men, perhaps even kings, set forth from the East, and came to Jerusalem, seeking the King of the Jews, Who had been born; and they said that in the East, where their homeland was, an unusual and strange star had appeared two years before, which, according to an ancient oracle (Num 24:17), was to signify the birth of some great king of the Jews. "For we have seen His star in the east," they said, "and have come to worship Him" (Matt. 2:2). Hearing these things, Herod was troubled, and the whole city together with him. Then, having inquired and been informed by the high priests and scribes of the people that, according to the prophecies, Christ was to be born in Bethlehem, he sent the Magi thither and ordered them that, when they would find the Child, to inform him, so that he also - as he affirmed - might go and worship Him. But the Magi, after they had worshipped, departed by another way to their own country by a divine command. Then Herod was wroth and sent men to slay all the infants of Bethlehem and the parts round about, from two years old and under, thinking that with them he would also certainly slay the King Who had been born. But this vain man who fought against God was mocked, since Jesus the Child, with Mary His Mother, under the protection of Joseph the Betrothed, fled into Egypt at the command of an Angel. As for those innocent infants, they became the first Martyrs slain in behalf of Christ. But their blood-thirsty executioner, the persecutor of Christ, came down with dropsy after a short time, with his members rotting and being eaten by worms, and he ended his life in a most wretched manner. 10 "TEACHING IS A MINISTRY OF THE HEART" These words from Deuteronomy are dedicated to my devoted Catechists and to the Parents of our Students. "(18) You shall therefore lay up these words of mine, says the Lord God, in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as an ornament on your forehead, a frontlet between your eyes. (19) You shall teach them to your children, talking to them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. (20) You shall write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates. (21)That your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth." Deuteronomy 11:18-21 may be the most important scriptures about teaching in the entire Holy Bible. Every parent is also a teacher. They are their children's first and most impactful teachers for they lay down principles of life. And a Sunday School teacher becomes a unique parent for he/she lay down not only principles for this life but eternal truths about the One True God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and His plan to save us. Let me explain as I break down these verses. (V18) The Lord God is saying that teachers and parents have the opportunity and the good obligation to instill in the hearts and souls of their children the very words of Holy Scripture into their thinking, into their very heart-which is the seat of the intellect- and in the soul-where the will is involved. Teachers, you have the opportunity -even for less than an hour- to counteract much of what the world is trying to teach our children. I beg you to instill in their hearts and souls the love of God; to value God as the source of all things. Now, this is very important even though it sounds as given, because if they believe that God is our creator then they will live their lives according to His will. If they believe that the earth and everything in it is a creation of God then they will value and respect it, doing everything possible to protect it and preserve it as a gift of God. If they believe that God is the creator of all mankind, beginning with Adam, they will honor all human beings as equal. And most important they will respect and love the Holy Bible as the Truth of God, inspired by Him. (V19) This verse commands us to teach our children during their daily and weekly activities. They should be taught during the routine events of everyday life. When they go to bed (lie down) read to them a Saint story; pray with them and teach them to give thanks to God; read them passages from Holy Scriptures or sing a hymn with them (children love songs). When they wake up (when they rise) remind them to do their morning prayers and ask of God to protect them throughout the day. While at home (sitting in your house-at table-in Sunday School classroom) teach them about what God expects of us and find out what is going on in their lives. And anytime you go somewhere (walking in the park) ask them to observe the greatness of God in creation from the smallest creature to a giant tree. In other words, if we want our children/students to grow into strong, wise, confident, capable, intelligent, mature Christian adults, we can't just leave their spiritual and moral development to chance. We have to take seriously our God given responsibility to teach our children. We have to work constantly and in every place to keep the 'weeds' from taking over their souls and minds. (V20) Listen to what God says to parents and teachers of His Word in this verse. Write the words of God all over. On places high and low. On the walls, on the door frames of your house and on your gates. It should be no different in the classrooms. Every Sunday School room and every child's bedroom must look like a little church decorated with holy images -icons, bible verses. What this verse is saying is that the children should have visible access to godly images, to spiritual fragrances, to the hearing of the Word of God. The Holy Bible or another spiritual Orthodox book should be next to your child's bed. The Sunday School curriculum here at Holy Trinity is Christ focused. Our teachers try their best to increase in Orthodox knowledge and ethos by personal spiritual growth and attendance at Religious Seminars conducted throughout our Metropolis. We make every effort not to waste class time with unimportant matters and worldly issues. This verse teaches that God's teachings should be so much a part of our lives that it's as we literally wrote them on the backs of our palms and on our foreheads never to be forgotten!!! In Proverbs 6:24-25 Prophet Solomon teaches, " My son, guard the laws of your father, and do not depart from the rules of your mother, but fasten them to your soul continually and wear them as a collar upon your neck." Excellent advice! But the Word of God is not a text book to be memorized in order to pass a test. The word of God is life, and that abundant. Teaching children is much harder than quoting to the children and trying to understand them. It requires sensitivity, tact, respect, patience, perseverance and most of all humility. And one more thing, we have to be living whatever we teach or they'll hear what our lives say and ignore what we teach. (V21) Beloved Teachers and Parents, this last verse gives us all the reason why we should teach our children the Word of God and the teachings of our Church Fathers with the help of the Holy Spirit of God always. Our children will make the right choices and live longer because of these choices. And even more they will be able to fight the good fight and thus receive their crowns on the day of Christ's second coming. Respecting your efforts and admiring your zeal, Father Christos

12 GOYA NEWS GOYA was very busy this November. We participated in a service project at St. Sophia in Pennsylvania on November 22. GOYAns from the Delaware Valley Churches got together and collected Turkeys, Hams, Pumpkins, and other fall foods that were distributed to the less fortunate this Thanksgiving. GOYA sends a big thank you to all who contributed. We played in the Delaware Valley basketball league every weekend this month and hosted 4 games at our church. These games were a great way to socialize with the GOYAns from other parishes during some of our nail-biting games. Additionally, we will be participating in a religious retreat at Elkins Park on December 13, and all GOYA age youth from our church are strongly encouraged to attend. Our trip to St Basil s Academy will take place on Saturday, December 20 where we will be giving gifts to the St Basil s children. We thank the other organizations from our church for making donations towards St Basil s Academy. We also look forward to our GOYA basketball Tournament February 14/15 of 2015 and appreciate all the support from our community. Many Blessings, Pauline Raisis President Praisis15@archmereacademy.com

14 Holy Trinity Food Pantry We hope you like our new logo which will identify who we are wherever you see it displayed. It was designed by a member of our Food Pantry Committee. As our Lord fed the multitudes with 5 fish and 2 loaves of bread ~ so we also will continue to feed the poor with His help and yours! A Brief History of the Food Pantry Program Because of our inner-city location many needy families were coming to Holy Trinity asking for aid. Seeing that this need was growing, Fr. Stamatis Ganiaris started the Food Pantry Program 50 years ago with the help of the Philoptochos Society. The plan was simple ~ ALL parishioners were asked to bring in non-perishable food when they came to church. At that time the food was stored in the AHEPA kitchen. As the years went by, bins were placed in the Narthex and by the church office. They were very visible and soon were being filled to the brim. The food was then delivered to the Salvation Army, the Sunday Breakfast Mission, and St. Stephen s Church. They, in turn, gave it out to all who came to their doors in need of food. With this on-going program, Holy Trinity not only is recognized as being a vital part of the city s food chain, but it is also fulfilling their Christian obligation to feed the poor and needy. The following volunteers have been with the program for some time: John Lazare, Tina Ganiaris King, Steve Nicholas & Nikkie Tsakataras

15 Holy Trinity Food Pantry Twas the night before Christmas and...all through the house, no one was stirring because they were all huddled together to keep warm, for besides no heat, there wasn t any FOOD and Christmas became just another day. This is a reality for over 17,000,000 people in these United States and some of them are living in Wilmington. Perhaps some are your neighbors! Current Statistics show that 1out of every 7 Americans are homeless and 1 out of 5 children in America faces hunger. But we can help to bring the spirit and joy of Christmas to needy families by sharing our many blessings. Especially FOOD! The Food Pantry Committee, The Sunday School and our GOYA are combining their efforts for this great holiday food drive. Please join them by bringing in foods such as Soups, fish, vegetables, meat, fruit, (any canned item), cereals, sugar, rice, pasta, Jellies, Peanut Butter, Pasta Sauces, Mac & Cheese, baby food, coffee, tea, gravies, flour, sugar, etc. Any food that will not spoil. ANY CHRISTMAS FOOD ITEM We are now collecting frozen food items all year!! Always needed are chickens, turkeys, hot dogs, frozen vegetables. For your convenience we will gladly pick up these items from your home. Just call the church office at Last month Steve Nicholas delivered 30 bags of food to the Sunday Breakfast Mission. Just in time to add to their Thanksgiving Meal baskets. Please continue to fill our bins located by the church office and the church narthex office. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all parishioners who have made this Christian program successful by filling the food bins month after month throughout the year. You have been an important link in this community food chain of feeding our own citizens of Wilmington. Thank You and a Joyous Christmas to All and a Healthy, Happy New Year! The Food Pantry Committee,

Various Dr. Costas G. Fountzoulas Concentric Circles I always liked to throw stones on the calm waters of a lake to watch the rippling of the water on its surface. In the beginning, there is a small disturbance at the point of impact of the stone with water. Immediately after, a first small circle appears whose diameter increases continuously. After the first circle, a second larger one appears, and then a third one, that goes on. We observe traveling concentric circles until the energy of the initial impact is exhausted. The Hellenic civilization and culture, these wonderful conceptions and gifts of the Greeks initially to the West, and today to the whole world, is the vibration that initiated the exit of mankind from ignorance to knowledge, from fear to rational explanation, from superstition to creation. Greek culture and way of thinking spread in the world in concentric circles. Just as we know the center of the concentric circles on the surface of the lake, so we know the center of contemporary civilization. That center is located on the Acropolis, Delphi, the frescoes of the monastery of Saint Luke, Delphi, Plato, Aristotle, the Fathers of the Church, the Greek language, and the seven Greek vowels. This center is known and will illuminate the humanity until the end of the world. Now let's see how many words from Homer exist in English. The Homeric words in contemporary Greek are presented in the Greek text. Below are the first verses of Homer Odyssey text, the second literary work after Homer s Iliad of the West. The word introduced in modern English language from Homeric Greek is in parenthesis. Andra[ANDROGYNY]me ennepe [EPIC], mousa [MUSE, MUSEUM], polytropon [POLYTROPIC], os mala polla[poly] plagthe [PLASTIC, PLANKTON], epe Troias[TROY] ieron[hieronymous] ptoliethron epersen; Pollon [POLLOI] d anthropon iden astea kai noon egno [AGNOSTIC], Polla d o g en ponto[pond] pathen algae[algae, MYALGIA] on kata thymon [THYMIC,THYMUS], Arnymenos, en te psychin [PSYCHE] ke noston[nostalgic] etaeron; All oyd os etaroys errysanto, iemens per; Auton [AUTOMATION] gar sfeterisin atasthaliesin olonto, Nepioi, oe kata bous[butter = Cheese of the cow] Yperionos Elios [HELIOS] esthion; autar o toisin afeleto nostimon[nostalgic] emar [EPHEMERAL]. From what we see, even today, we speak the same language of the center of all concentric circles! HAPPY NEW YEAR, which first the Greeks presented as an infant replacing the old man!
