He ascended in the flesh on the cross of His own will. And He suffered death and raised the dead by His Glorious Resurrection. Ἀπολυτίκιον Ἀναστάσιµον. For the Saint Mode 4. Come quickly Your Martyr, O Lord, was worthily awarded by You the crown of incorruption, in that he contested for You our immortal God. Since he possessed Your power, he defeated the tyrants, dashing the demons' powerless displays of defiance. O Christ God, at his fervent entreaties, save our souls. Τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἦχος δʹ. Apolytikion of Saint Great Martyr Barbara (Hymnal Page 10) Let us honor most Holy Barbara. With the cross she shattered the trap of the enemy. And in her modesty, she was freed like a bird. Kontakion Mode 4 Both Joachim and Anna from their sterility's stigma, and Adam and Eve from their mortality's ruin have been set free, O immaculate Maid, by your holy nativity. For this do your people hold celebration, redeemed from the guilt of transgression as they cry to you, "The barren one bears the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life." Epistle Reading: St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 1:21-24; 2:1-4 Brethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; He has put His seal upon us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me - it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. 4 Κοντάκιον Ἦχος δʹ Ἰωακεὶµ καὶ Ἄννα ὀνειδισµοῦ ἀτεκνίας, καὶ Ἀδὰµ καὶ Εὔα, ἐκ τῆς φθορᾶς τοῦ θανάτου, ἠλευθερώθησαν, Ἄχραντε, ἐν τῇ ἁγίᾳ γεννήσει σου αὐτὴν ἑορτάζει καὶ ὁ λαός σου, ἐνοχῆς τῶν πταισµάτων, λυτρωθεὶς ἐν τῷ κράζειν σοι Ἡ στεῖρα τίκτει τὴν Θεοτόκον, καὶ τροφὸν τῆς ζωῆς ἡµῶν. Gospel Reading: Matthew 22:2-14 The Lord said this parable, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen." 5 Ἀνάγνωσις Εὐαγγελίου: Κατὰ Ματθαῖον 21:33-42 Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τήν παραβολὴν ταύτην Αλλην παραβολὴν ἀκούσατε. ἄνθρωπός τις ἦν οἰκοδεσπότης, ὅστις ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ φραγμὸν αὐτῷ περιέθηκε καὶ ὤρυξεν ἐν αὐτῷ ληνὸν καὶ ᾠκοδόμησε πύργον, καὶ ἐξέδοτο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν. ὅτε δὲ ἤγγισεν ὁ καιρὸς τῶν καρπῶν, ἀπέστειλε τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς λαβεῖν τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτοῦ. καὶ λαβόντες οἱ γεωργοὶ τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὃν μὲν ἔδειραν, ὃν δὲ ἀπέκτειναν, ὃν δὲ ἐλιθοβόλησαν. πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους πλείονας τῶν πρώτων, καὶ ἐποίησαν αὐτοῖς ὡσαύτως. ὕστερον δὲ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ λέγων ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου. οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ἰδόντες τὸν υἱὸν εἶπον ἐν ἑαυτοῖς οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ κατάσχωμεν τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ. καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἐξέβαλον ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, καὶ ἀπέκτειναν. ὅταν οὖν ἔλθῃ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τί ποιήσει τοῖς γεωργοῖς ἐκείνοις; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ κακοὺς κακῶς ἀπολέσει αὐτούς, καὶ τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἐκδώσεται ἄλλοις γεωργοῖς, οἵτινες ἀποδώσουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς καρποὺς ἐν τοῖς καιροῖς αὐτῶν. λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ιησοῦς οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς, λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες, οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη, καὶ ἔστι θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν;

8 REMEMBER SMYRNA September 9th marks the 96th year since the veritable holocaust of Smyrna (now Izmir) and the martyrdom of Smyrna s Metropolitan Chrysostomos. During the early 20th century, 1.7 million Greek Christians were forced by the Turkish government to leave their ancestral homes and properties, never to see their homes again. Before the forced exodus of Christians from Asis Minor, many atrocities were carried out. Greek men and boys were not allowed to leave but held back to be exterminated. 1.4 million were massacred. The burning of Smyrna in September 1922 and the horrors that accompanied the expulsion of the Christian population were the culmination of many years of official and unofficial Ottoman policy. According to the Asia Minor Holocaust Committee, in 1913 Turks who had occupied Eastern Thrace massacred close to 16,000 in habitants. In the summer of 1914 as many as 400,000 Greek subjects were drafted by the Turkish government to serve in forced labor battalions, only to die from hunger, hardship, and mistreatment. Along with the widespread Massacres of Armenians that began in April 1915, the Turkish government initiated the expulsion of the Greek population of Pontos in 1916. Over 350,000 Pontian Greeks were massacred. These are just some of the events that have been documented in a lengthy chronology of oppression. In 1997, a memorial was erected in Washington D.C. to commemorate the anniversary of this tragic day Sept 9th. With special prayers, let us honor the memory of the 3.5 million Christians who perished and martyred in Asia Minor because of their religion and ethnicity. May we never forget and may their memory be eternal! FROM FR. FRANK: Where to our St. Barbara children go on Sunday Morning? With their parents they gather to pray at our St. Barbara Church. They are ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS!!! Orthodox Catechism Classes for our Youth- Where good things happen! Religious Education is for everyone! It s when we worship and pray in church. It s when we speak the truth in love. It s when we support one another in our spiritual journey of life. It s when we commit ourselves in living our Orthodox Faith. It s when we help a young child light a candle and make their cross. It s when all of us come together as one Becoming and functioning as the body of Christ. REMEMBRANCE AND SUPPORT GROUP Support Groups are popular ministries in many Greek Orthodox Churches nationwide. Here at St. Barbara, we would like to start a Support Group for ALL who are suffering with a loss of a loved one. First meeting will take place September 11th, 2018 at 10:00am in the Social Hall in one of the classrooms. 10 Let us REGISTER. It is AWESOME! Planting the Seeds of Orthodoxy: If you haven't done so yet, please register your teen (7 th - 12 th grade) for GOYA. Our meetings are held once a month on a Friday night with amazing speakers, topics, activities, and inspiration imbued with the Orthodox faith. Friends Forever, Orthodox for Life! Why GOYA? The mission and goal of GOYA ministry is to lead our young people into experiencing the Holy Orthodox Christian Faith. It is not an organization or club but rather a ministry of the Church. By developing a personal relationship with Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ and becoming active sacramental members of the living Church, our young people will be equipped with tools necessary to assist them in their journey toward salvation. These young people will undoubtedly one day become parish counsel members, Sunday School teachers, and stewards of the church.
