St. John of Egypt Commemorated on December 2 Saint John lived in Egypt in the fourth century, and is mentioned in the Life of Saint Onuphrius. After he had buried Saint Onuphrius, Saint Paphnutius came upon an oasis which impressed him with its beauty and abundance of fruit-bearing trees. Four youths inhabiting this place came to him from out of the wilderness. The youths told Abba Paphnutius that in their childhood they had lived in the city of Oxyrhynchus (Upper Thebaid) and they had studied together. They had burned with the desire to devote their lives to God. Making their plans to go off into the desert, the young men left the city and after several days journey, they reached this place. A man radiant with heavenly glory met them and led them to a desert Elder. We have lived here six years already, said the youths. Our Elder dwelt here one year and then he died. Now we live here alone, we eat the fruit of the trees, and we have water from a spring. The youths gave him their names, they were Saints John, Andrew, Heraclemon and Theophilus (Dec. 2). The youths struggled separately the whole week long, but on Saturday and Sunday they gathered at the oasis and offered up common prayer. On these days an angel would appear and commune them with the Holy Mysteries. This time however, for Abba Paphnutius sake, they did not go off into the desert, but spent the whole week together at prayer. On the following Saturday and Sunday Saint Paphnutius together with the youths was granted to receive the Holy Mysteries from the hands of the angel and to hear these words, Receive the Imperishable Food, unending bliss and life eternal, the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, our God. Saint 2 19

Paphnutius made bold to ask the angel for permission to remain in the desert to the end of his days. The angel replied that God had decreed another path for him. He was to return to Egypt and tell the Christians of the life of the desert-dwellers. Having bid farewell to the youths, Saint Paphnutius reached the edge of the wilderness after a three day journey. Here he found a small skete, and the brethren received him with love. Abba Paphnutius related everything that he had learned about the holy Fathers whom he had encountered in the desert. The brethren wrote a detailed account of what Saint Paphnutius said, and deposited it in the church, where all who wished to do so could read it. Saint Paphnutius gave thanks to God, Who had granted him to learn about the exalted lives of the hermits of the Thebaid, and he returned to his own monastery. Saint John is also commemorated on June 12 with Saint Onuphrius. ST. VASILIOS PHILOPTOCHOS FUNDRAISER WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. CEMETERY VISITS Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. St. Vasilios 1 st Mode Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! EPISTLE READINGS Prokeimenon. Second Mode. Psalm 117.14,18. The Lord is my strength and my song. Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 6:10-17. Brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Προκείμενον. Second Mode. ΨΑΛΜΟΙ 117.14,18. Ἰσχύς μου καὶ ὕμνησίς μου ὁ Κύριος. Στίχ. As a Christian Ministry, Hagar s Sisters uniquely provides domestic violence education and support within the context of a woman s spiritual beliefs. It is a safe place to explore the tough spiritual questions every woman asks in the midst and the aftermath of abuse. Sadly, this past year Hagar s Sisters has seen an 82% increase in new women requesting services. A Sister Service Center is set to launch In January with a Prayer Room as well as Sister Meeting Spaces. Monetary donations of any denomination would be greatly appreciated to help with this great need. Envelopes shall be located in the Narthex as well as in the Educational Center. Envelopes can be returned to the Church Office by Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Thank you for your support! 8 13

GOSPEL READING -14th Sunday of Luke 14th Sunday of Luke The Reading is from Luke 18:35-43 At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God. 12 9

Leah, who was baptized at St. Vasilios, is currently staying at the Hawthorne Hotel until Friday. After that, she will be in temporary housing. Due to a lot of people's generosity, she has been able to get clothing, kitchen items and furniture. Right now her biggest need is a place to live for herself and her small dog. If you know anyone on the North Shore that might be able to help her find a new apartment in the Salem-Peabody-Danvers-Beverly area, it would be greatly appreciated. Leah is a Salem State student.
