HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all. Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. CHURCH GOSPEL AND SERMON ETIQUETTE It is disrespectful to arrive late for Liturgy and walk to a front pew while our clergy are reading the Gospel or delivering their sermons. It is also distracting to others who are attempting to concentrate on the message. SYNAXIS OF JOHN THE HOLY GLORIOUS PROPHET, BAPTIST & FORERUNNER On January 7 we celebrate the Synaxis in honor of the most sacred Forerunner, since he ministered at the Mystery of the Divine Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rest from labor. Fish allowed. ΣΥΝΑΞΙΣ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΙΩΑΝΝΟΥ ΤΟ ΠΡΟΔΡΟΜΟΥ Ήταν γιος του ιερέα Ζαχαρία και της Ελισάβετ. Μέχρι τα τριάντα του χρόνια, ζει ασκητική ζωή στην έρημο της Ιουδαίας, αφιερωμένη ολοκληρωτικά στην προσευχή, τη μελέτη και την πνευματική και ηθική τελειοποίηση, πού είναι βασικοί παράγοντες για την εκτέλεση υψηλών και θείων ύπουρ-γημάτων. Το ρούχο του ήταν από τρίχες καμήλας, στη μέση του είχε δερμάτινη ζώνη και την τροφή του αποτελούσαν ακρίδες και άγριο μέλι. Με μορφή ηλιοκαμένη, σοβαρός, αξιοπρεπής και δυναμικός, ό Ιωάννης φανέρωνε αμέσως φυσιογνωμία έκτακτη και υπέροχη. Είχε όλα τα προσόντα μεγάλου και επιβλητικού κήρυκα του θείου λόγου. Έτσι, με μεγάλη χάρη κήρυττε "τα πλήθη". Κατακεραύνωνε και κτυπούσε σκληρά τη φαρισαϊκή αλαζονική έπαρση, πού κάτω από το εξωτερικό ένδυμα της ψευτοαγιότητας έκρυβε τις πιο αηδιαστικές πληγές ψυχικής σκληρότητας και ακαθαρσίας. Γενικά, ή διδασκαλία του συνοψίζεται στη χαρακτηριστική φράση του: "Μετανοείτε ήγγικε γαρ ή βασιλεία των ουρανών", προετοιμάζοντας, έτσι, το δρόμο του Κυρίου μας Ιησού Χριστού για το σωτήριο έργο Του. Οταν ό Χριστός άρχισε τη δημόσια δράση του, ό κόσμος άφηνε σιγά-σιγά τον Ιωάννη και ακολουθούσε Αυτόν. Ή αντιστροφή αύτη, βέβαια, θα προκαλούσε μεγάλη πίκρα και θα γεννούσε αγκάθια ζήλειας και φθόνου σ' έναν, εκτός χριστιανικού πνεύματος, διδάσκαλο ή φιλόσοφο. Αντίθετα, στον Ιωάννη προκάλεσε μεγάλη χαρά και ευφροσύνη. Ή γιορτή αυτή του Ιωάννου του Προδρόμου, για τον όποιο ό Κύριος είπε ότι κανείς άνθρωπος δε στάθηκε μεγαλύτερος του, καθιερώθηκε τον 5ο μ.χ. αιώνα. Saints and Feasts SAINT DOMNICA Saint Domnica was from Carthage. During the reign of the Emperor Theodosius the Great, she came with four other virgins to Constantinople, where she was baptized by Nectarius, the Patriarch of Constantinople. She remained in Constantinople and became known for her extreme asceticism, the miracles that she worked, and the grace of prophecy that adorned her. She lived until the days of the Emperors Leo and Zeno, reposing in peace about the year 474. ΟΣΙΑ ΔΟΜΝΙΚΗ Η Οσία Δομνίκη γεννήθηκε στην Καρθαγένη της Αφρικής. Το 384, όταν έφτασε σε νεαρή ηλικία, για προσωπικούς λόγους έρχεται στην Κωνσταντινούπολη μαζί με άλλες σαράντα συνομήλικες της. Τότε αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Μέγας Θεοδόσιος και Πατριάρχης ο Νεκτάριος. Μόλις γνωρίζει τη Δομνίκη ο Πατριάρχης, διακρίνει τις αγνές της προθέσεις και αμέσως τη βαπτίζει και μετά την κάνει μοναχή. Στη χριστιανική μοναχική ζωή διακρίνεται νωρίς η Αγία για την πίστη της, το ζήλο, την αφοσίωση της στη φιλανθρωπία και, προπάντων, για την αγνότητα της ψυχής της, αποδεικνύοντας και αυτή με τη ζωή της τα λόγια του Κυρίου μας στους μαθητές Του και, κατ' επέκταση, σε όσους Τον ακολουθούν: «Σεις τώρα είσθε καθαροί. Και σας έχει καθαρίσει ο λόγος της αληθείας, πού σας έχω πει και διδάξει» (Ιωάννου ιε 3). Η ηθική καθαρότητα της Αγίας Δομνίκης, συνδυασμένη με την αξιοθαύμαστη ταπεινοφροσύνη της, είχε τέτοια απήχηση στη συνείδηση της Εκκλησίας μας, ώστε να την κατατάξει στο χορό των Αγίων της.

In baptism, submergence in water represents death to the old ways of sin, and what follows is a resurrection a rebirth to a new life in Christ. While Orthodox Christians are baptized only once, as a community we commemorate Christ s baptism every year. What better time to renew your life in Christ? What better way than through stewardship? We are stewards of the first catch.

Colovos Scholarship through St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Spring Session 2016 Deadline 1/19/16 All forms are on www.stnicholastarpon.org; print out or pick up packet from Parish office and return by deadline above. Remember to fill out 2015 and 2016 St. Nicholas Stewardship Card! It s easy to do! Please review checklist below for required documents: Current scholarship application Application must be completed in full. You may attach any additional comments that explain your special circumstances to the Trustee of the Colovos Scholarship Fund. Academic transcript of the previous semester Minimum GPA is 3.0 Recent high school graduates should provide their high school transcript. For college students, an online print-out of final grades is usually acceptable. Proof of class registration for the upcoming semester Must be full time student: 12 credit minimum (with the exception of Summer session.) If your program is full time but less than 12 credits, provide explanation and proof. Parent s current Personal Tax Return Your current Personal Tax Return (if applicable) You must be a Steward/Active member of the Church for a continuous two (2) year period immediately prior to the application for a scholarship from the Fund. Applicants 18 years old or older need to be stewards in their own name even if a dependent living at home. ST NICHOLAS PHILOPTOCHOS Monday: 9:00-10:00 am; Wed-Thu: 10:00 am - noon Mission Statement To aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need to help of the Church through fund-raising efforts. Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas Card Project. A total of $6,200 was collected. With this money, we were able to purchase $3,500 in Publix gift cards to give to those in need at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year! Philoptochos will be helping at the pastry booth for Epiphany. If you are able to volunteer some time, please let Costas Sisois know when you can help. On January 24 we will have our annual membership tea at the Community Center. More details to follow.
