EPISTLE Galatians 2:16-20 B rethren, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. GOSPEL John 8:34-38; 9:1 T he Lord said, "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." RESPECT FOR THE HOLY EUCHARIST It is difficult to prepare children for Liturgy. But there is no excuse for missing Liturgy entirely and expecting to receive Communion. You will not be communed outside of Liturgy unless you are old, infirm or have experienced an emergency. Saying it was hard getting the kids ready today will not suffice. Teaching children to be on time - and thus show respect for - the Eucharist should be our top priority.

Saints and Feasts EUPHROSYNE OF ALEXANDRIA St Euphrosyne of Alexandria was born at the beginning of the 5th century in the city of Alexandria. She was the only child in her family of famous and rich parents. Since her mother died early, she was raised by her father, Paphnutios, a deeply believing and pious Christian. When Euphrosyne turned eighteen, her father wanted her to marry. He went to a monastery to his spiritual guide to receive his blessing for the planned wedding of his daughter. The Abbott conversed with the daughter and gave her his blessing, but she yearned for monastic life. She secretly accepted tonsure from a wandering monk, left her father's house, and decided to enter a monastery in order to lead her life in solitude and prayer. She feared, however, that in a women's monastery her father would find her. Calling herself the eunuch Smaragdos, she went to the very same men's monastery, which she had visited with her father since childhood. The monks did not recognize St Euphrosyne dressed in men's garb, and so they accepted her into the monastery. Here in a solitary cell, she spent 38 years in works, fasting and prayer, and attained a high level of spiritual accomplishment. Her father grieved over the loss of his beloved daughter and more than once, on the advice of the Abbott, he conversed with the monk Smaragdos, revealing his grief and receiving spiritual comfort. Before her death, the nun Euphrosyne revealed her secret to her grieving father and asked that no one but he should prepare her body for burial. Having buried his daughter, Paphnutios distributed all his wealth to both the poor and to the monastery, and then he accepted monasticism. For ten years right up to his own death, he labored in the cell of his daughter. ΟΣΙΑ ΕΥΦΡΟΣΥΝΗ Η Οσία Ευφροσύνη έζησε στα χρόνια του Θεοδοσίου του μικρού (περί το 410 μ.χ.), και ήταν μοναχοκόρη. Ο πατέρας της Παφνούτιος ήταν ο πλουσιότερος της Αλεξάνδρειας και μαζί με τη σύζυγο του διακρίνονταν για τη θερμή πίστη τους στο Θεό. Δώδεκα χρονών η Ευφροσύνη έμεινε ορφανή από μητέρα, και ο πατέρας της αφοσιώθηκε ακόμα πιο φιλόστοργα στην επιμέλεια της κόρης του. Όταν η Ευφροσύνη έφθασε στο 18ο έτος της ηλικίας της, ο πατέρας της θέλησε να την παντρέψει με ένα νέο υψηλής κοινωνικής τάξης. Όμως την ψυχή της Ευφροσύνης είχε καταλάβει ο θείος έρωτας. Ο γάμος και οι κοσμικότητες θα της ήταν εμπόδιο να αφιερωθεί συστηματικά στην ελεημοσύνη και στην υπηρεσία του πλησίον. Γι αυτό κάποια μέρα, αφού διαμοίρασε τα υπάρχοντά της στους φτωχούς, έφυγε κρυφά από το σπίτι, και μετά από πολλές περιπέτειες, κατέληξε μεταμφιεσμένη ανδρικά σε κοινόβιο ανδρικό μοναστήρι. Εκεί πήρε το όνομα Σμάραγδος και όλοι οι μοναχοί θαύμαζαν τον πνευματικό της αγώνα και τη διακονία που πρόθυμα πρόσφερε σε όλους. Έζησε στο μοναστήρι 38 χρόνια. Στο τέλος της ζωής της συναντήθηκε και με τον πατέρα της, όταν και αυτός έγινε μοναχός στο ίδιο μοναστήρι. Έτσι, με τη ζωή της η Ευφροσύνη μας υπενθυμίζει τα λόγια της Αγίας Γραφής (Προς Τίτον, Β' 12), που λένε πως, αφού αρνηθούμε τις επιθυμίες του ματαίου και αμαρτωλού αυτού κόσμου, να ζήσουμε στον παρόντα αιώνα με εγκράτεια στη ζωή μας, με δικαιοσύνη προς τους συνανθρώπους μας και με ευσέβεια προς το Θεό.

Volunteers for cooking, serving meals and cleanup between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm - along with monetary donations for the purchase of food - are welcome and needed. It could be argued that Mrs Kallie s devotion to the Greek Orthodox faith is proven by the obvious influence she has had on her two sons -- His Eminence Metropolitan Nikitas of Dardanelles & our own assistant choir director and founder of the Levendia dance ministry, John Lulias. However, the consistency with which she has been offering her own time to the St Nicholas parish cannot be ignored. For several years, Mrs Kallie has been a front office volunteer, greeting all visitors and employees with her trademark smile. Apart from offering excellent customer service, she never misses an opportunity to help with tasks involving cleanup, shredding, bulk mailings, and more.
