What needs to be done to combat climate change? By when? Scope E missions of CO2 from automobiles are rising quickly, fuelled by the rapid expansion of the world car park. This contrasts with the goal set by the IPCC to combat Climate Change for the stabilization of world GHG emissions by 2030, followed by a rapid and substantial drop by 2050. Car technology needs to carry the largest part of the burden of any abatement strategy, posing the question if the evolution of the internal combustion engine can by itself accomplish the task. Present thinking accepts that alternative energy sources are needed and that an integrated approach involving a wide range of stakeholders (e.g. suppliers, the energy sector, public authorities etc.) needs to be adopted, making the overall effort more effective and less costly. The future calls for a new recipe... Which are the right ingredients? Green thinking New priorities on the environmental front create a wide array of challenges that affect consumer preferences and manufacturers strategies. + Increased complexity Green motoring necessitates alternative energy powertrains, increased fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions - which certainly add complexity and increase cost. - Downsizing «Think-small-downsize-all» - A new perspective sweeps the auto industry: flexible production runs, smaller car bodies, decreasing engine capacities, drastic cost-cutting methods. Attractive shapes The role of design Car designers have a crucial role to play in order to make new shapes and technologies attractive to the public.

T his Conference sets out to explore how major manufacturers see the future of the automobile and on which technologies they are relying to go forward. These obviously tie in with other initiatives that have to be taken by other sectors, for instance, the production of second generation biofuels and the provision of low CO2 electricity to power electric and plug-in hybrid cars. An additional challenge is the issue of downsizing. Manufacturers will have to adopt and support sophisticated and expensive technologies as a new industry trend calls for smaller car bodies with alternative energy powertrains and low CO2 emissions. However, persuading the public to pay more for "less metal" might prove a difficult task - especially as many markets have traditionally accepted for decades that big is beautiful. Car designers have a crucial role to play in order to make these cars attractive. A round table of top car designers A prosperous future... For whom? The answer is clear and simple: FOR ALL A balanced approach is necessary in order to satisfy increased energy demands, sustain economic growth and - equally important - protect the environment. will discuss the challenges. The distribution network which provides the point of contact with the final customer, will also have to adapt in order to support the initiatives by designers and manufacturers. The supply of electricity is of paramount significance to the electrification of the automobile. It has to provide adequate electric power with the characteristics required by the electric and plug-in-hybrid cars. Finally, electronics are advancing quickly into the automotive sector providing optimized energy use, increased active safety, enhanced information and a pleasurable drive to occupants. The overall aim of the Conference is to help policy makers, the energy sector, the mass media and the general public visualize the revolutionary change faced by automakers, the extremely tight schedule to accomplish the changes and the critical supporting role which will have to be provided by public authorities, energy firms and the media.
