THE SOURCE May 2013 Issue # 5-13 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL CAMP HILL, PA PASCHAL GREETINGS 2013 Dearly Beloved, One of the striking features of the Resurrection Icon that will be placed on our Church altar-solea on Pascha night, is the downward stretched arm of the Savior offered to Adam and Eve to free them from their bondage in Hades. With upward stretched arms, may we grasp the hand of God and accept what He offers with so great a love your own personal resurrection. Everything we have comes from His Holy Hand. As Saint Paul tells us, "All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself..." (II Corinthians 5:18). Let us also share this glory with the myriads of people everywhere who are stretching forth their hands seeking purification, redemption and joy. They are the hands of unfortunate souls that were always empty, starting right from their childhood people who never had a chance to enjoy the most basic God-given right for all mankind: protection of their very life under the law of the land. They are the hands of the poor, the weak and the oppressed in all parts of the world who are in near despair and are stretching forth their hands, hoping and praying for a better tomorrow. They are the hands of little children and adolescents seeking the hand of God to be rescued from the abuse inflicted upon them by people who have no sense of conscience or compassion. They are the hands of human beings who really feel that they are "strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world." (Ephesians 2:12). (continued on next page)

THE SOURCE MAY 2013 Page 2 Let us celebrate this joy by attending the beautiful once a year Paschal vigil of Saturday night from the beginning to the end. This includes the Resurrection announcement in our courtyard and the entrance back into the church for the Pascha Liturgy. This year, immediately following the Paschal liturgy our entire community is invited to come to the hall for a bit of socializing. We will enjoy avgolemeno soup, bread, and a little wine! This post-liturgy meal is a common tradition in our Churches throughout the Archdiocese and I am grateful to those who are now preparing this for our Cathedral community as well. Before departing to our separate homes for the night, what a wonderful event this can be to socially embrace, with glad hearts, our celebration of Christ is Risen! +Fr. Kosta Petrogeorge, Proistamenos * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Respecting CHURCH ETIQUETTE By Fr. Kosta Petrogeorge Anything in life becomes more exciting and meaningful when we participate in it. For example, a person who doesn't know anything about the rules and strategy of football, is less likely to be a die-hard fan, compared to the one who studies it and does it. This is also true of worship, and the spiritual life in general. We can either be a marginal spectator on the road; or actively get into the game. In order to triumph in the latter, let us keep in mind a few basics about etiquette in worship. (continued on next page)

THE SOURCE MAY 2013 Page 3 Once the service is in process, if it is necessary to enter or exit the church, this is best done during the singing of hymns. There are certain times when undue movement should not take place. Of special note are the following principles: 1. The very beginning invocation of the service when the priest intones, "Blessed is the Kingdom This invocation ushers into the right reference point, and hearing this liturgically is respectful and important. 2. Readings of the Epistle and Gospel: Remember that the readings and the sermon are key elements of the Liturgy that can help the believer in their preparation for Holy Communion! It is important that everybody is in the Church at least by the Epistle and Gospel readings. Planning to come from the beginning of the Lord s Mystical Supper is a sign of faith. We are always to be completely still God's Word (not even to light candles), and this includes the Epistle as well as the Gospel. (Although: one may quickly enter into the nave immediately after the Epistle until the Gospel starts; and again immediately after the Gospel until the sermon starts). 3. The Sermon: Once the sermon has begun, anyone coming to church late should quietly come into the nave and stand in the back against the glass wall (i.e. the area between the glass and the pews, or even in the first five or six pews if there is room). However, please do NOT enter further towards the front of the church because that would be distracting not only to the preacher, but also to the rest of the faithful. 5. Before approaching for Holy Communion the faithful should wait reverently and patiently for the invitation to, draw near before approaching the solea. Receiving Holy Communion is offered to the faithful who have prepared themselves consciously to approach with the fear of God and with faith. Receiving Holy Communion is not an individual pious act; it is a celebration of the community and is the chief sign of membership in the church. At the same time, we should prepare carefully for Holy Communion, abiding by the moral teachings of the church, and presenting your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship (Romans 12.1). Final Etiquette Notes 6) Before venerating any icon, please remove all lipstick or lip coating. Kissing icons with lipstick is disrespectful towards the icon and the other persons who would also wish to kiss the holy icons. Also, lipstick and lip coating are very difficult to cleanup afterwards, and could potentially damage some of the icons. 7) Regarding babies and small children at Liturgy: We should exercise patience. The children have as much of a need to be in the Lord s assembly as adults, and bringing them to Church is a divinely given responsibility of parents and godparents. At the same time, the delivery of the sermon is one point in which parents should take their children to the narthex if they are making distractive noise; then re-enter the nave after the sermon. Normally, we should work to keep children in the Church, the holy house of the Lord. However, small children can be taken out for short periods of time whenever the need exists. Please remember that persons who watch small children often benefit from a pleasant smile and an offer to help, rather than a frown.

THE SOURCE MAY 2013 Page 6 Dear Parishioners, PARISH COUNCIL The month of May will be extra busy because of Pascha and the festival being just two weeks apart! Fortunately the ladies have been happy and busy with the baking preparations. We thank everyone who has participated so far with the ladies and also those who helped with the pastitsio and moussaka. The most demanding times are still ahead of us. The operation of the festival requires over a hundred volunteers at any busy time. The three days of the festival can be very satisfying for those who participate. Please do your part and step up and volunteer. Many of you have experience from previous years and know where you want to volunteer but we ask that you sign up so the chairperson for each stand will know when you will be available to help. Maybe each of our returning volunteers can ask a friend to volunteer. Many of you have noticed that the new bookstore is under construction. We hope that it will be completed before the festival. Jane Aftosmes has been managing the store from the beginning but she will not be able to continue running the store much longer. We would like someone or a group of volunteers to step up and take over this worthwhile responsibility sometime after the festival. Also plans for the commemorative book album are progressing. Helen Tzanis and her committee are working very hard to get it to fruition. At the conclusion of the project there will be a dance to celebrate the 75th anniversary again. Please be aware that Fr. Kosta has planned a new community event at the end of the resurrection service. Nick Mallios has volunteered and avgolemono soup (Sunnyside's recipe, Charlie will be proud of his son Nick), bread and a glass of wine will be made available to all the parishioners in the social hall at the conclusion of the resurrection liturgy. Please make this a successful event by participating. On behalf of the Parish Council, we wish you a blessed Holy Week and blessed Pascha. GREEK SCHOOL On Wednesday March 20th at 6:00 pm, Mr. Labros Pilalis visited our school and gave a presentation for the war that took place around the year 1821. Mr. Pilalis provided us with a precise timeline of the events that took place before, during and after the war. The half hour presentation followed by questions and answers. The presentation was well attended by the students and parents. An event that was enjoyed and appreciated by all, especially the students. On behalf of the Greek school staff we want to thank Mr. Pilalis for his continuous efforts to support our school as we look forward to more presentations in the future. On Sunday March 25th, the Greek schools of central Pennsylvania celebrated the Greek Independence Day "March 25th" with a speech given by Lieutenant Colonel George Varelas, poems, songs and dances. The festivities of the day started with the entrance of the flags and a Doxology, continued with a luncheon provided and organized by the PTO. On behalf of the Greek school staff and the community we want to thank the three families who were in charge of the main course of the meal - the Balafoutas, Bouboukas and the Gianarris families.we also want to thank all those who took the time to decorated the hall that enhanced the theme of the day. On another note, please mark your calendars for June 3rd, at 5:15 the Greek school will celebrate the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Thank you Dimitra Curley
