EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 16:13-24 B rethren, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. Now, brethren, you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints; I urge you to be subject to such men and to every fellow worker and laborer. I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicos, because they have made up for your absence; for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such men. The churches of Asia send greetings. Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord. All the brethren send greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. If any one has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen. GOSPEL Matthew 21:33-42 T he Lord said this parable, "There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it was marvelous in our eyes?'" RESPECT FOR THE HOLY EUCHARIST It is difficult to prepare children for Liturgy. But there is no excuse for missing Liturgy entirely and expecting to receive Communion. You will not be communed outside of Liturgy unless you are old, infirm or have experienced an emergency. Saying it was hard getting the kids ready today will not suffice. Teaching children to be on time - and thus show respect for - the Eucharist should be our top priority.

Resurrectional Apolytikion When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world. For the Forerunner The memory of the just is observed with hymns of praise; for you suffices the testimony of the Lord, O Forerunner. You have proved to be truly more ven'rable than the Prophets, since you were granted to baptize in the river the One whom they proclaimed. Therefore, when for the truth you had contested, rejoicing, to those in Hades you preached the Gospel, that God was manifested in the flesh, and takes away the sin of the world, and grants to us the great mercy. Apolytikion of St. Nicholas As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion Both Joachim and Anna from their sterility's stigma, and Adam and Eve from their mortality's ruin have been set free, O immaculate Maid, by your holy nativity. For this do your people hold celebration, redeemed from the guilt of transgression as they cry to you, "The barren one bears the Theotokos, the nourisher of our Life."

THE HOLY PROPHET ZACHARIAH AND THE RIGHTEOUS ELIZA- BETH Saint Zacharias, the son of Barachias, was a priest in the temple at Jerusalem, while Saint Elizabeth was the sister of Saint Anna, the mother of the Most Pure Theotokos. The righteous spouses, "walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless," suffered from barrenness, which in Old Testament times was considered to be a great chastisement from God. Once, during his service in the temple, Saint Zacharias received tidings from an angel that his aged wife would bear him a son, who "shall be great in the sight of the Lord" and "shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias." Zacharias doubted the possibility of this prophecy's fulfillment and was punished with dumbness for lack of faith. When a son was born to the righteous Elizabeth, she declared by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that the babe would be called John, although among their kin, such a name had not been given to anyone before. The righteous Zacharias was asked, and he likewise wrote on a tablet the name John. At once the gift of speech returned to him, and he, filled with the Holy Spirit, began to prophesy about his son as the Forerunner of the Lord. When the impious King Herod heard from the Magi of the Messiah, Who had been born, he decided to slay all the infants in Bethlehem and its environs up to the age of two years, hoping that among them would also be the Messiah. Herod knew well of the Prophet John's unusual birth and wanted to slay him, fearing that he, too, was the King of the Jews. But the righteous Elizabeth concealed herself, together with the babe in the mountains. The slayers sought John everywhere. The righteous Elizabeth, on Saints and Feasts seeing the pursuers, began to entreat God with tears for salvation, and at once the hill, parting, concealed her together with the babe from the pursuit. During those days, Saint Zacharias was fulfilling his turn of service in the temple at Jerusalem. Soldiers sent by Herod vainly tried to learn from him where his son was. Then, at the command of Herod, they slew the holy prophet, stabbing him to death between the temple and the altar. The righteous Elizabeth died forty days after her spouse, while Saint John, preserved by the Lord, abode in the desert until the day of his appearing unto the people of Israel.

SAVE THE DATE! DUELING PIANOS are back! Don t miss this stunning collaboration between Tony DeBlois, a blind autistic musical savant & Tony Kidonakis, a Professor of Jazz Studies! Saturday, December 12, 2015 St Nicholas Community Center SAVE THE DATE! ST. NICHOLAS PHILOPTOCHOS IS PROUD TO PRESENT LIVE IN CONCERT If we have the faith to dive in head-first. Our Epiphany celebration draws attention from around the world. But at the root of this holy day is a baptism. In baptism, submergence in water represents death to the old ways of sin, and what follows is a resurrection a rebirth to a new life in Christ. While Orthodox Christians are baptized only once, as a community we commemorate Christ s baptism every year. What better time to renew your life in Christ? What better way than through stewardship? www.stnicholastarpon.org/stewardship We are stewards of the first catch. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17 ST. NICHOLAS COMMUNITY CENTER MORE INFORMATION TO FOLLOW

NEED FOR SUPPLIES We at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Preschool are very excited to start the 2015-16 school year. In the year since I have become director, we have made a lot of changes to our school: We have a new curriculum and a new behavior policy, and we aim at working towards becoming a nationally accredited preschool in the next few years. In order to begin working towards that goal, we need supplies -- specifically, art supplies and developmentally appropriate educational toys. We are asking for your donations to help us buy these supplies and achieve our goal of accreditation. If you would like to write us a check, please make it out to St. Nicholas Preschool. You can leave your donation with a Parish Council member or drop it off at the church office. Or, you can take the opportunity to visit us and see all the great things that we are doing at St. Nicholas Preschool! As always, we thank all of you for your continued support of our school. Sincerely, Jessica Gorman
