We venerate your cross, O Christ, and we praise and glorify Your holy resurrection. You are our God. We know no other than you, and we call upon your name. Come, all you faithful, let us venerate the holy resurrection of Christ. For behold, through the cross joy has come to all the world. Ever praising the Lord, let us praise His resurrection. For enduring the cross for us, He has destroyed death by death.
Dear Parishioners of our Beloved Assumption, Χριστός Ανέστη!!! Christ is Risen!!! Soon we will celebrate the Leave Taking of the Great Feast of Pascha, the Ascension of the Lord, and the Birthday of the Church - Great and Holy Pentecost. The Altar doors will once again be closed and the Paschal candle will be set aside until next year. It is a necessity of the Church that we celebrate feasts on a cyclical calendar, but for the individual, each and every day we must commemorate His crucifixion and celebrate His resurrection. The hymns of Pascha are not chanted in the church, but must always resonate in our hearts. One of the most challenging disciplines for us as Christians is to develop a prayer rule that consistently reminds us of His sacrifice and subsequent great gift to us. So what should we do? Each day, at 9 a.m. (for His crucifixion), 12 Noon (for His surrender of His spirit) and 3 p.m. (for His removal from the Cross), remember to recite the Jesus prayer silently wherever you may be (start with 3 times and progress to 33 times) and end with the Lord s Prayer. Begin each day with a prayer thanking God for keeping you through the night and end each day asking him to keep you and your loved ones safe. Include the prayer, Having Beheld the Resurrection of Christ. (see prior page) Always bless your food and yourself before and after meals. PHILOPTOCHOS RUMMAGE SALE NEWS It s never too early to donate to the rummage sale. We have made space in the garage to store your clean, gently used treasures until August. Please bring them in a closed box so they can be stacked in the garage. You may bring them on Sundays. Leave them in your car and you can unload them into the garage during coffee hour. TALES FROM L.A. CONNECTED TO COMMUNITY As you read this article, Pascha 2011 is becoming a pleasant and comforting memory. You ve probably kept the palm cross you received in church on Palm Sunday and put it near your home icons. In your home icon corner you may have saved a flower from the Epitaphio. It s possible that buried in your refrigerator are one or two red Easter eggs, left over memories of the first moments you wished a friend or relative Christos Anesti. These simple yet tangible connections to the most holy of days on our Orthodox Calendar have meaning, not only in themselves, but because they were received by you and your family in the context of our Orthodox Christian community. Community our connections to God and to one another is another way to define our ancient faith. It is in the context of community, the family of God that we worship, pray and participate in the sacraments. Together on an ongoing participating basis we can experience the sense of Church. Another word for Heaven is the word connected. Another word for Hell is the word disconnected. The Church connects us to God. St. Ignatius the Martyr says, Where Christ is, there is His Church. Sometimes our own apathy and ignorance disconnects us from God and isolates us from our fellowship in God s family the Church. So many disconnected Greek Orthodox people unfortunately treat the church the way they treat the Department of Motor Vehicles. Their focus is how do I get what I need, pay for it and move on. In other words, what does it cost to register my car, renew my driver s license or transfer my car title. Once the transaction is completed we don t think about the DMV until the next time we need them. In like manner, the Church becomes for many a hatch, match, patch and dispatch operation in our life. How do I baptize my child and what does it cost? What s the process of getting my daughter married and what does it cost? My marriage is falling apart Father help! or My Aunt Mary passed away two
BY FR. JOHN S. BAKAS days ago. How do I arrange a funeral for her and what does it cost? The question often is not only what does it cost but can I get a break on the price because Aunt Mary was a member of Philoptochos in the 80 s. From 40- day children s blessings to home blessings, many people who are disconnected from the total life of the church see it as a religious retail store where we buy a religious commodity. This is a sad but real commentary. Even Holy Week and Pascha itself is treated by some as a visit to a charming religious Disneyland that is visited once a year. I got phone calls during Holy Week such as: What day is the Holy lubrication service this year? How long is the Curcifi-cation service this year? How long does it take to take the Wooden flower box around the church on Friday night? What time exactly is communion at Easter Liturgy? The people calling with their questions are not trying to be funny or strange. They just don t know. They are disconnected from the daily life of the Orthodox family of God. They are on the outside, occasionally looking in. If Easter tells us anything, it is to call us to life in Christ, to life and involvement in His Church. When we say Christos Anesti and respond with Alithos Anesti, it is a witness to on-going faith in our truly risen Christ. Pascha calls us to community and communion with the death-defeating, life-giving God. He calls us to a new consciousness and awareness. As you visit and meet with disconnected Greek Orthodox Christians and exchange the greeting of Christos Anesti, invite them to be a part of the community of saints. Tell them what St. Cyprian says, Do not think that you maintain the true Gospel of Christ, if you separate yourself from the flock of Christ. Encourage their on-going participation in the Church which was purchased for them by the blood of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ. Christos Anesti! Fr. PENTECOST Celebrated June 12 th Such, therefore, are the reasons for the feast of Pentecost: the coming of the All-holy Spirit into the world, the completion of the Lord Jesus Christ's promise, and the fulfillment of the hope of the sacred disciples, which we celebrate today. This is the final feast of the great mystery and dispensation of God's incarnation. On this last, and great, and saving day of Pentecost, the Apostles of the Savior, who were unlearned fishermen, made wise now of a sudden by the Holy Spirit, clearly and with divine authority spoke the heavenly doctrines. They became heralds of the truth and teachers of the whole world. On this day they were ordained and began their apostleship, of which the salvation of those three thousand souls in one day was the comely and marvelous first fruit. That which came to pass at Pentecost, then, was the ordination of the Apostles, the commencement of the apostolic preaching to the nations, and the inauguration of the priesthood of the new Israel. Therefore, together with the baptism of the Holy Spirit which came upon them who were present in the upper chamber, which the Lord had foretold as recorded in the Acts, "ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence" (Acts 1:5), the Apostles were also appointed and raised to the high priestly rank, according to Saint John Chrysostom. On this day commenced the celebration of the Holy Eucharist by which we become "partakers of the Divine Nature" (II Peter 1:4). For before Pentecost, it is said of the Apostles and disciples only that they abode in "prayer and supplication" (Acts 1:14); it is only after the coming of the Holy Spirit that they persevered in the "breaking of bread," that is, the communion of the Holy Mysteries- "and in prayer" (Acts 2:42).
SAINT PAUL Celebrated June 29 th Paul, the chosen vessel of Christ, the glory of the Church, the Apostle of the Nations and teacher of the whole world, was a Jew by race, of the tribe of Benjamin, having Tarsus as his homeland. He was a Roman citizen, fluent in the Greek language, an expert in knowledge of the Law. For this cause, from the beginning, Paul was a most fervent zealot for the traditions of the Jews and a great persecutor of the Church of Christ; at that time, his name was Saul. In his great passion of rage and fury against the disciples of the Lord, he went to Damascus bearing letters of introduction from the high priest. His intention was to bring the disciples of Christ back to Jerusalem in bonds. As he was approaching Damascus, about midday there suddenly shone upon him a light from Heaven. Falling on the earth, he heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?" And he asked, "Who art Thou, Lord?" And the Lord said, "I am Jesus Whom thou persecutest; it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks." And that heavenly voice and brilliance made him tremble, and he was blinded for a time. He was led by the hand into the city, and on account of a divine revelation to the Apostle Ananias, he was baptized by him, and both his bodily and spiritual eyes were opened to the knowledge of the Sun of Righteousness. And straightway- O wondrous transformation! - beyond all expectation, he spoke with boldness in the synagogues, proclaiming that "Christ is the Son of God" (Acts 9:1-21). As for his zeal in preaching the Gospel after these things had come to pass, as for his unabating labors and afflictions of diverse kinds, the wounds, the prisons, the bonds, the beatings, the stonings, the shipwrecks, the journeys, the perils on land, on sea, in cities, in wildernesses, the continual vigils, the daily fasting, the hunger, the thirst, the nakedness, and all those other things that he endured for the Name of Christ, and which he underwent before nations and kings and the Israelites, and above all, his care for all the churches, his fiery longing for the salvation of all, whereby he became all things to all men, that he might save them all if possible, and because of which, with his heart aflame, he continuously traveled throughout all parts, visiting them all, and like a bird of heaven flying from Asia and Europe, the West and East, neither staying nor abiding in any one place - all these things are related in the Book of the Acts, and as he himself tells them in his Epistles. Having completed the work of his ministry, he likewise ended his life in martyrdom when he was beheaded in Rome during the reign of Nero, at the same time, some say, when Peter was crucified.

PARISH COUNCIL MINUTES PARISH COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES April 15, 2011 Call to Order John Thodos called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. and Fr. Jon led the group in prayer. Roll Call Present: John Thodos, Biju Ninan, Deno Kandis, Diane Lamacki, Lambros Mihalopoulos, Roger Lovejoy, Celia Lubbers, and Abraham Chirackal Excused: Nick Passini, Cathy Diakogeorgiou, Mike Haney, and Liz Gorman Festival Report: provided by John Stopoulos. Following have been completed Band is set Musicians of Olympus electrical support Dance troupe Sherry Kontos will chair the kid s area looking into Justin Miller to provide Battle of the bands and Dance Dance Revolution Liquor insurance - $1,240 Have slush machines lined up for Ouzo drinks Wine tasting Dimitri Papageorgiou is set up and is donating the wine of the tasting. Problem Area need volunteers need to find people to do work. President s Report Furnace Bill s Heating to have the furnace in by Easter - $10,600 to include the economizer. Priest s Report Had 22 donors ($11,000) lined up for the furnace in the church. Lights in the hall light fixtures are broken need to be replaced approx. $1,500 Entry Portico needs to be repaired or replaced.

Minutes Minutes for March 2011 were reviewed and approved as submitted. Treasurer s Report Have $8,200 in checking account as of today. After payroll will only have $4,400. Old Business Roger L. reported that the plaster and painting contractors are both bonded and incurred. They will start repairs after Easter. John Thodos will have someone come out to look at the portico to see how it should be repaired/replaced. Κυριακή της Αγίας Πεντηκοστής 12 Ιουνίου Μετά την Ανάληψη του Κυρίου στους ουρανούς, οι Απόστολοι και οι υπόλοιποι μαθητές του, καθώς και οι γυναίκες που απο την αρχή τον είχαν ακολουθήσει, η Παναγία Παρθένος Μαρία η Μητέρα του και τα αδέλφια του, περίπου όλοι μαζί 120 άτομα, γύρισαν απο το όρος των Ελαιών στην Ιερουσαλήμ και, μπαίνοντας στο σπίτι όπου έμεναν, ανέβηκαν στο υπερώο, δηλαδή στον πάνω όροφο του σπιτιού και εκεί, περίμεναν με προσευχή την επιφοίτηση του Αγίου Πνεύματος, σύμφωνα με την υπόσχεση του Σωτήρα Χριστού. Στο μεταξή εκεί, εξέλεξαν και τον Ματθία και τον συναρίθμησαν με τους ένδεκα Αποστόλους. Κυριακή των Άγιων Πάντων 19 Ιουνίου Τον κάθε ένα απο τους γνωστούς Αγίους, τιμούμε ειδικά σε κάποια μέρα του χρόνου. Επειδή όμως πολλοί μας είναι άγνωστοι και ο αριθμός τους πολλαπλασιάστηκε κατά καιρούς, γι αυτό η Εκκλησία όρισε, μια συγκεκριμένη γιορτή. Έτσι λοιπόν την ημέρα αυτή, τιμάμε με ευλάβεια όλους τους Δικαίους, Προφήτες, Όσιους, άνδρες και γυναίκες μαζί, γνωστούς και άγνωστους, όσους απο τον Αδάμ μέχρι τώρα απεβίωσαν με ευσέβεις και με τα καλά τους έργα δόξασαν τον Θεό. Αυτούς όλους και αυτές επίσης τις στρατιές των Αγγέλων, πρίν απ αυτούς δε και μαζί με όλους την Παναγία Θεοτόκο και αειπάρθενο Μαρία, τιμάμε σήμερα με την παρούσα γιορτή, προβάλλοντας τη ζωή της σαν παράδειγμα αρετής. Και παρακαλούμε όλους αυτούς τους Αγίους να πρεσβεύουν στον Θεό για μας προκειμένου η χάρη και το άπειρο έλεός Του να είναι μαζί με όλους μας.
Αποστόλοι Πέτρος και Παύλος Οι Πρωτοκορυφαίοι Απόστολοι ΠΕΤΡΟΣ και ΠΑΥΛΟΣ 29 Ιουνίου Ο Πέτρος καταγόταν απο τη Βηθσαϊδά της Γαλιλαίας και ήταν γιός του Ιωνά, αδελφός του αποστόλου Ανδρέα του Πρωτοκλήτου και ήταν ψαράδες στη λίμνη Γεννησαρέτ. Είχε νυμφευθεί στην Καπερναούμ, όπου έμενε οικογενειακά, μαζί με την πεθερά του. Ψαράς στο επάγγελμα, ήταν τύπος αυθόρμητος, ορμητικός, και η ζωή του κοντά στο Χριστό τη μαθαίνουμε απο τα τέσσερα Ευαγγέλια, ενώ την αποστολική του δράση, απο τις Πράξεις τών Αποστόλων. Έγραψε και δύο Καθολικές Επιστολές, μέσα στις οποίες, να τί προτρέπει στους χριστιανούς: "Νήψατε, γρηγορήσατε, ο αντίδικος υμών διάβολος ώς λέων ωμυόμενος περιπατεί ζητών τίνα καταπίη". Δηλαδή εγκρατευθείτε, γίνετε άγρυπνοι και προσεκτικοί. Διότι ο αντίπαλος και κατήγοράς σας διάβολος, σαν λιοντάρι που βρυχάται, περιπατεί με μανία και ζητάει ποιόν να τραβήξει μακριά απο την πίστη για να τον καταπιεί. Μετά την Ανάληψη του Κυρίου, ο Πέτρος, δίδαξε το Ευαγγέλιο στην Ιουδαία, στην Αντιόχεια, στον Πόντο, στην Γαλατία, στην Καππαδοκία, στην Ασία και τη Βιθυνία. Κατά την παράδοση (που σημαίνει ότι δεν είναι απόλυτα ιστορικά διασταυρωμένο) έφτασε μέχρι τη Ρώμη, όπου επί Νέρωνος (54-68) υπέστη μαρτυρικό θάνατο, αφού τον σταύρωσαν χιαστί, με το κεφάλι προς τα κάτω. Ο δε Παύλος γεννήθηκε στην Ταρσό της Κιλικίας και στην αρχή ήταν σκληρός διώκτης του χριστιανισμού. Όμως, με θαύμα γνώρισε το Χριστό και έγινε ο μεγαλύτερος κήρυκας του Ευαγγελίου, θυσιάζοντας μάλιστα και τη ζωή του γι αυτό. Ονομάστηκε Απόστολος τών Εθνών, και τη ζωή με τις περιπέτειες του θα τα δεί κανείς, άν μελετήσει τις Πράξεις τών Αποστόλων, αλλά και τις 14 Επιστολές του στην Καινή Διαθήκη. Ο Παύλος θέλει κάθε χριστιανός, όπως και ο ίδιος, να αισθάνεται και να λέει: "ζώ δε ουκέτι εγώ, ζή δε εν εμοί Χριστός".Δηλαδή, δε ζώ πλέον εγώ, ο παλαιός άνθρωπος, αλλά ζεί μέσα μου ο Χριστός. Και ακόμα, "τα πάντα και εν πάσι Χριστός". Να διευθύνει, δηλαδή, όλες τις εκδηλώσεις της ανθρώπινης ζωής μας ο Χριστός. Ο απόστολος Παύλος υπέστη μαρτυρικό θάνατο (χωρίς αυτό να είναι απόλυτα διασταυρωμένο) δι αποκεφαλισμού στη Ρώμη.
