Γ:3) A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRIEST In This Issue Calendar Festival 2014 Our Faith Stewardship Raffle Winners HAVE A BLESSED AND HEALTHY SUMMER In Every Issue Priest s Message President s Message Church Calendar PTO News Sunday School News Greek School News G.O.Y.A. News Philoptochos News Dear Faithful, Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. (Galatians 6:9) Summer is upon us and summertime is a time to slow down, relax, rest from our busy schedule and renew ourselves with a vacation or at least a break away. All of us look forward to summertime. Children are thrilled that they are out of school and adults enjoy the warm weather and recreational atmosphere. One spiritual danger that tempts many people including our Orthodox families, is to think that summer vacation implies a break from worshipping our Lord on Sundays. Of course, if we understand Sunday worship as a duty or obligation we may rightly need a break. Yet, if we understand each Sunday as an opportunity to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven and participate in the eternal and mystical feast of our Lord Jesus Christ, then we realize that neither summer, nor any other season of the year, is a time to stay away from Church. We don t take a rest from church because it is precisely at Church where our souls find rest! We receive our spiritual nourishment to face a new week by coming to Church and receiving the most precious and life-giving Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We receive our moral grounding to guide us around the landmines of contemporary relativism when we hear the good News of our Lord proclaimed and explained every Sunday. And, of course, we fill ourselves with the hope and joy of eternity when we listen to and offer the divine prayer of our Sacred Tradition and then gather in Christian fellowship to stand before Almighty God in love and humility each Day of the Lord. Summer is NOT a time to rest from the Church and from our spiritual struggles. In fact, the exact opposite should occur. Since our busy schedule slows down a bit during summer, this is the ideal time to read a spiritually edifying and inspiring book. Why don t we use the restful time of our vacation to reflect upon our lives and think about the direction that we ourselves and our family are taking? Why don t we use the restful time to wrestle with the essential questions of life and ask ourselves what we are doing to prepare for eternity? Life is short and too many people allow life to pass by simply focusing on the urgent and immediate needs, giving little time to the essential and everlasting. Try to make this summer of 2014 a memorable one in a spiritual sense. Make it memorable not for the vacation that you take, but for the decisions of life that you make. Sit together as a family and talk about your future and discuss, truly, your heavenly and eternal dreams. Most importantly, check in with your Creator and ask Him what He desires from you. And then make a commitment to accept His invitation to enter into the path that leads to a most joyous and abundant life. If you do this, then you will discover what our Lord meant when He said, Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lonely in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and My burden is light. (Mathew 11:28-30) Remember, true and lasting rest and renewal will not come from any unforgettable vacation. Only the Father and Creator of our bodies and souls can offer us an authentic and everlasting rest and peace. I wish you all a most blessed and spiritually renewing summer! Rev. Fr. Nicholas Pastrikos

Πατήρ Νικόλαος Παστρικός GREEK FESTIVAL A Great Celebration Together as a Christian family, we as faithful parishioners of St. George experienced once again a great Greek Festival. From my perspective, I can tell you that this festival was very well attended and supported by faithful volunteers, young and old; we pray that this trend will continue in the future, not only for our festival but for ALL the much needed fund-raisers that our beloved St. George organizes. I would like to personally thank every one of our most dedicated hardworking parishioners who truly gave of themselves in Time, Talent and yes, Resources, to make this Festival the success that it was. I would also like to thank our new chairman, Mr. George Athanasopoulos who stepped up and came forward to take on the responsibility of this great task from our former chairman, Mr. John Lyssikatos. Mr. Athanasopoulos, worked very hard and sacrificed very much to make this year s Festival as successful as in previous years. Congratulation on a Job Well Done! May God Bless each and every one of you!!! Rev. Fr. Nicholas Pastrikos

July/August 2014 Page 7 LADIES PHILOPTOCHOS SOCIETY ST. BARBARA On May 12, 2014, the Metropolis Clergy/Laity Assembly and the Metropolis Philoptochos Convention took place at the Venetian Hotel in Garfield, NJ. Our delegates to this convention were Effie Bouziotis and Georgia Peterson; alternate was Eleni Parlapanides. Also, Eleni Andronikou and Evellyn Tsiadis attended as members of the Metropolis Philoptochos Board. Metropolis Philoptochos President Ann Michals addressed the Philoptochos ladies attending. The guest speaker Mrs. Anita Kartolopoulos gave a presentation regarding the progress of the Schools of the Patriarchate. Each Philoptochos chapter of our Metropolis sent a donation for this cause. Over $32,000 was presented to Patriarch Bartholomew to assist in the maintenance of their schools. Our Patriarch was most thankful and appreciative. The delegates at the convention voted, once again, to support The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Fund for Patriarchal Schools. With the 2013-14 ecclesiastical year coming to an end, we congratulate our Philoptochos ladies for the extraordinary effort in fulfilling their annual national, metropolis and community obligations. May God Bless them and keep them well so they may continue to work for the betterment of the Philoptochos, our church, and our St. George community. Our Philoptochos, however, needs more of our members to assist in fulfilling the many obligations and projects on their agenda. We encourage all our members to attend and participate in our meetings and every lady of our community to become a member of the Philoptochos. During the month of August our Ladies will host the coffee hour following the Divine Liturgy. To all our members and the entire St. George Community we extend our best wishes for a happy and safe summer. Our dear and beloved member Dorothy Pappas passed away in April, 2014. She will be greatly missed. May her memory be eternal. Remember to direct your United Way donation to the St. George Needy Cases Fund United Way Reference Number 32224 METROPOLIS HONORS PEGI ZAJAC The day-long meetings of the May 12, 2014 Metropolis Philoptochos Convention were followed by the Convention Banquet attended by representatives and guests from the entire Metropolis. At this banquet, individuals from each community who have extended a lifetime of service and dedication to their church community were honored. Our Ladies Philoptochos Society chose Mrs. Pegi Zajac to represent our Philoptochos and to be honored by His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos. Pegi has been a very active member of our Philoptochos for many years. She has served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and has chaired many activities throughout the years. With her engaging and compassionate energy and her ever-present smile, she continues to serve on the Philoptochos Board of Governors and the St. George Needy Cases Fund committee. Pegi was honored with a commemorative plaque by His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos. We all agree, it is a well-deserved honor that was bestowed upon her. We are very proud of our member Pegi Zajac and extend to her our congratulations and best wishes. The St Barbara Ladies Philoptochos Society wishes to express our gratitude for the generosity and compassion shown by Fr Nicholas Pastrikos, the St George Board of Trustees, various organizations and our St George Community to one of our own parishioners. We thank you for your continued assistance with our endeavors to minister to the needy. I would like to thank Fr. Nicholas Pastrikos, the St. George Board of Trustees, the St. Barbara Ladies Philoptochos Society, various organizations and the St. George Community for the generosity and kindness shown to me during my time of need. Sincerely, James Karamanos

Page 8 July/August 2014 G.O.Y.A. GREEK ORTHODOX YOUTH ASSOCIATION As the summer sun approaches, we can look back on the memories we shared this year. GOYA has been an incredible journey for everyone, a place to learn more about oneself, fellowship, and the Christian way of life. Just this past year we have all become family and can rely on each other for support. Unfortunately, every year our seniors have to move on and start a new journey. The seniors mark will forever last on the minds and hearts of us GOYANS. Congratulations to George Stavrianidis and Constantine Stavrianidis for winning First Place at the District Oratorical Festival held at St. Anna s in Flemington on Saturday, April 5th, 2014. Both advanced to the Metropolis Oratorical Festival held in May at Tenafly, where George won again in the Senior Category. He continued on to 2014 National Oratorical Festival hosted by the Metropolis of Pittsburgh at the Annunciation Church in Cleveland, Ohio on June 13-15 th 2014, where he came in second place. Our older GOYANS on May 9 th, 2014 attended the Holmdel Masquerade dance. Everyone had a great time talking with other GOYANS and enjoying each other s company. This year s Festival took place on May 16, 17, and 18 where every GOYAN gave his or her support and time. We are so proud of all those who came to help with set-up and breakdown and who helped with our GOYA stand. It was a beautiful event, celebrating our culture with dancing, food, and Greek pride. Junior Olympics took place on May 24-25, 2014 where our GOYA participated in athletic events with other GOYANS. This year s medal winners were: Marathon: Dimitri Demos, 1st Place Senior Boys Mile: Dimitri Demos, 1st Place Junior Girls 100: Francesca Dimitrakis, 1st Place Junior Boys 4x400: Jason Stavrianidis, Apostoli Petsanas, Niko Koutsoubis, John Kavouras, 3rd Place Senior Boys Freestyle: Dimitri Demos, 2nd Place Senior Boys Backstroke: Dimitri Demos, 3rd Place Senior Boys Breaststroke: Dimitri Demos, 3rd Place We are so proud of all our GOYANS team spirit and fun energy. Congratulations to Louis Kavouras for winning the Good Samaritan award for St. George Piscataway. We admire him for his good teamwork and positive attitude. Thank you to all our advisors for the time and care they all put into this organization. Without the dedication of our advisors, this successful year wouldn t have been possible. We are all so grateful for their love and kindness. Even though the GOYA year is ending, we have next year to look forward to. May God continue to bless your lives. Have a wonderful summer! Respectably submitted, Hope Sirimis, GOYA Historian P.T.O. PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION Summer is here, Καλό Καλοκαίρι! July/August 2014 Page 9 SUNDAY SCHOOL Dear Parents and Members of our St. George Community, Our 2013-2014 ecclesiastical year has come to an end and the summer months are upon us. On behalf of Father Nicholas, our teachers and staff, we wish our students and their families, as well as the entire St. George community, a wonderful and blessed summer. On the 15 th of June we held our end of the year ceremony; approximately 40 students received Perfect and Excellent attendance awards, the 3 rd grade students recited The Lord is my Shepherd, all our children sang the Hymn of Saint George, awards were given to a teacher who has been with us as long as 36 years, the Father Anthony and Presbytera Frances Pappas scholarships were given to two seminarians, etc. It was an absolute pleasure for all of us to teach our Christian Orthodox faith and heritage to our lovely students. Our Catechism program proceeded this year with great energy, enthusiasm and the blessings of our Lord Jesus Christ. Each class followed the established curriculum developed by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Department of Religious Education, and participated in special projects that enhanced their learning process. We offered a music program that included the teaching of many liturgical hymns. Each class participated in the Divine Liturgy at least once a month where their knowledge of our Holy Orthodox Church was reinforced. We also conducted a number of special projects throughout the year including the Thanksgiving Food Drive, the Christmas Pageant, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, the Orthodox Christian Mission Center collection, the UNICEF collection, etc. We would like to congratulate George Stavrianidis who advanced to the national level of the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival and came in second nationally. We are very fortunate to have many generous donations throughout the year. On Mother s Day, our students and staff received flowers from Hionis Nursery; we thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. We are very excited to inform you that beginning with the 2014-2015 ecclesiastical year, our program will continue through 12 th grade. We welcome all our10-12 th grade students to this class that will be taught by Peter Combates and Meropi Martini. During the summer months we will meet to discuss enhancements to our program that will be communicated prior to the 2014-2015 ecclesiastical year. The set curricula and the many projects carried out throughout the year, under the leadership and spiritual guidance of Father Nicholas, provide a complete representation of our Catechism Program. Photograph of our Pre-Kindergarten class Photograph of our Nursery Class We truly thank the many committed volunteers for all their efforts, dedication and perseverance. If you would like to volunteer your time or talents to our program, please contact me at lmalahias@yahoo.com. Please note that any amount of time that you can give us is most appreciated. If you prefer not to be in the classrooms on Sunday, you can help us with the many programs being conducted throughout the year. Have a Great and Blessed Summer!!! Respectfully in Christ, St. George Catechism Staff

Page 10 July/August 2014 OUR FAITH PARAKLESIS TO THE VIRGIN MARY Throughout our Church history, no woman has been more loved, more lauded and more cherished than the Blessed Virgin Mary. She herself foretold: For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed (Luke 1:48). In beautiful poetichymnography which is characteristic of Byzantine Chant in the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Theotokos, the Mother of God, is honored and esteemed for her unique role in the salvation of the human race. Through her the Word of God became flesh, and the Infinite became, as it were, finite. Humanity took on the divine even as divinity took on humanity. The Theotokos is the vehicle, par excellence, of humility and obedience, and thus a supreme example of redeemed mankind. As the Mother of our Lord, she is our greatest ally and our most fervent intercessor, for the prayer of the righteous has great power in its effects (James 5:16). During the Paraklesis Service, we ask the Most Holy Theotokos to save us just as those drowning reach out to those on dry land. Let us then seek with confidence the help and intercession of the Mother of light, Mary, the Mother of our Lord. Let us also honor the Mother of our Lord, as many others before us have, by coming and participating in the Paraklesis Services, so that we can all praise the Mother of our Lord with hymn and song ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` Ας έλθουμε στην εκκλησία για να τιμήσουμε την Μητέρα του Κυρίου μας, όπως έχουν πράξει τόσοι άλλοι πριν από μας, και να λάβουμε μέρος την παράκληση, εγκωμιάζοντας την Θεοτόκο με ύμνους και ψαλμούς. PARAKLESIS TO THE VIRGIN MARY ΠΑΡΑΚΛΗΣΙΣ ΠΡΟΣ ΤΗΝ ΥΠΕΡΑΓΙΑ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΝ August 1-13 We set all hope in You, O mother of God, guard us under your holy protection «Μνήσθητι Κύριε, των δούλων Σου και χάρισαι αυτοίς, ψυχής και σώματος την υγείαν» ΖΩΝΤΕΣ For the Health of ΖΩΝΤΕΣ For the Health of We pray for mercy, life, peace, health of the servants of God
